The Tombow ABT Dual Brush Pen is a water-based brush pen with
two tips that can be used in different areas of application, such as
watercoloring, hand lettering, bullet journaling and much more.
Brush tip
Flexible fiber that bends like a brush
Fine polyester tip 0.8mm
Perfect for fine lines and details
About the Tombow Water Brush
The refillable water brush is a useful tool for watercolor techniques. By squeezing
the barrel the water flow is regulated. The water brush has a protective cap and is
perfect for on the go.
Balanced brush tip for painting and drawing
The adjustable water flow allows you to spread
the ink thinly or cover large areas at once, depending
on your personal preferences. When
used in combination with the water-based
Tombow ABT Dual Brush Pen, beautiful watercolor
effects are created.
How to create watercolor gradients
Apply your favorite ABT color onto a waterrepellent
surface like a clear folder, and use a
water brush to blend and paint. The more water
you use the lighter the color gets.
Coloring the skin
Apply 817 with the water brush as a base coat. Once dry,
use the water brush to apply 985 around the figure. For
the skin, use the water brush to apply 910 overall but
leave out areas directly hit by light. You can then use the
brush tip of the ABT to create faint shadows.
Apply the deep shadows on the skin directly with a brush.
Use 817 to draw a guideline, then fill in one-third of the
area. Finally, blend it into a gradient using 910.
Coloring the eyes
Use the water brush to color the eyes. Apply 528 for the
reflections and diagonal lines. Use 817 as the base,
avoiding the cherry blossoms. Use the brush tip of 910
for the lower highlights.
To emphasize the eyes, apply multiple layers of color. Use
817 to cover about half of the area around the cherry
blossom pupils, and then create a gradient with 910 for the
remaining area around the eyes.
Coloring the hair
Now fill in the upper petals of the cherry blossoms with
985. Using the most vibrant color in the set is effective in
making the eyes stand out.
Paint the hair highlights with the brush tips of the ABT.
Apply the colors in the order 910, 817, 528 and 985 to give
it a touch of sparkle. Color one spot with 158 in the center.
Leave some white of the paper for highlights by imagining
the light coming from the upper left corner. To achieve a
red-purple color close to black, mix a small amount of 817
with a larger amount of N49 and apply on the hair.
To create light shadows with a dark blue-purple tone, mix
a bit of 817 with 528 and N49, then apply with the water
brush. For darker shadows, use the brush tip of N49, then
create a gradient with 817.
Adding effects
Now you can create the effects. Imagine the girl holding a
circle of light and start with the edges by using the brush
tip of 985. Adjust the area being colored so the color
doesn't transfer to the face when blended with the water
brush later.
Now use the water brush to blur outwards before the ink
dries. To prevent it from becoming more saturated than
the face, immediately dab it with a tissue after blending to
create a gradient.
Add a glow effect to the petals using the same technique
as the circle of light. You can outline around the petals
with the brush tip of 985 and blend it with the water brush
before the ink dries.
Finally add small dots with the fine tip inside the edge of
the circle. This is a common manga technique to depict
light.
