Fourth of July<br />

Hey, over-the-toppers! Welcome<br />

back for another week of Over the Top!<br />

If Florida’s heat is anywhere near the<br />

humid summer heat we get in Arkansas,<br />

we are both in for a rude and hot<br />

summer.<br />

It’s so hot you can stand in the shade<br />

and sweat...even at night. I’m not too<br />

fond of the heat and the bugs. However,<br />

despite the muggy summer heat<br />

during the day and mosquitoes being<br />

deal-breakers on the hunt at night, I<br />

still love the Fourth of July and the festivities<br />

it brings.<br />

NEWS FLASH! Fourth of July is<br />

TODAY! Okay. I know. You all know<br />

it already, as you are home with your<br />

families; I get it. My significant other<br />

would be happy for the day off and not<br />

see the reasoning behind it.<br />

Seriously …<br />

He would lose his head everywhere<br />

if it weren’t attached to his body. This<br />

is why he is NOT the planner in our<br />

relationship. I can’t even get him to<br />

create a plan to create a plan for a vacation,<br />

for Heaven’s sake! And no, I’m<br />

not kidding.<br />

It doesn’t matter if you’re a Floridian<br />

or an Arkansan; it seems that holidays<br />

aren’t the same as when you were growing<br />

up. I mean, your joints don’t work<br />

like they used to, you are out of shape, no<br />

energy, you have the whole “this cannot<br />

be the same heat I played outside in as a<br />

kid” monologue going on in your head.<br />

Yeah, holidays are way different.<br />

But I look forward to grilling some<br />

good food and seeing some fireworks.<br />

They’re the must-dos for the fourth. Because<br />

what’s a holiday without food? It’s<br />

an “I’m not coming” holiday.<br />

There’s nothing like standing outside<br />

in the heat while standing next to additional<br />

heat from the grill. Snow cones,<br />

ice cream, popsicles, etc., can only do<br />

so much. That’s where the water games<br />

come into play.<br />

My family and I love swimming pools.<br />

Since we don’t have one, we play water<br />

games to cool down. The games include<br />

water balloon fights, up-and-over, slipand-slide<br />

bowling/baseball/kickball,<br />

pool to fit a few adults and filling it<br />

with ice water.<br />

TO DRINK YOUR WATER!<br />

Does Florida have a mosquito problem?<br />

We fight for our lives daily between<br />

them, horse flies, wasps, and other stingers<br />

in Arkansas. Mosquitoes are even<br />

worse at night. We have an unwritten<br />

rule: you don’t go outside at night unless<br />

you build a campfire and roast marshmallows.<br />

The smoke keeps them away<br />

but try at your own risk.<br />

Well …<br />

Remember to stay hydrated and enjoy<br />

yourself! I’m off to eat, relax in some icecold<br />

water in the shade … and eat some<br />

more.<br />
