More money allocated to
help fight climate change
• From page 1
Said Mayor Phil Mauger:
“We had a lot of
feedback
from the community
that
they want to see
strong investment
in climate change
mitigation.
“Our low-lying
coastal and
inland parts
Phil
Mauger
of Christchurch are going to be
increasingly impacted as sea levels
rise so it’s important that we start
preparing now.”
The council will also under take
a range of projects to help mitigate
climate change over the next 10
years.
It includes spending $101
million on public transport infrastructure
and bus route reliability,
supporting the ongoing development
of cycling infrastructure
across the city with $199 million
for the Major Cycleway Network
and increasing tree coverage and
canopy through delivery of the
$18 million Urban Forest Plan.
More than $1 billion has also
been allocated to projects that will
improve waterways, reduce flood
risk and support the development
of the Ōtākaro Avon River
Corridor.
