Burnside High School wins
Showquest 2024!!!
On Thursday 20th June, BHS alongside several other schools,
performed in the annual Showquest competition – and won! We
also won Best Props, Best Original Composition and Best Use
of Video Wall. The school spirit and pride was at the forefront
of the performance, and the students involved were incredible
ambassadors for our school -
despite being at the Town Hall for
over thirteen hours.
A huge thank-you to the staff
involved: Amanda Gillespie, Lara
Grocott, Megan Queree, Caroline
Ford, Rachaelle Stidder, Allie Hennig
and Katerina Papageoriou who all
helped make this a great experience
for the students involved.
Table Tennis - South Island
Teams Championships
Congratulations to Derrick Wong
(11SCTH) and Kevin He (11NKTA) who
were members of the three person
Canterbury Boys U19 team, who won
the South Island Boys U19 teams title
on the 1st of June.
Derrick was the team captain, with
their team achieving a 12-0 win to loss
ratio.
Ashburton College Winter
Sports Exchange
Burnside High School won the trophy again this year, on Tuesday
11 June, after a tight contest over many sports.
A fabulous day was had by all down
in Ashburton on Tuesday 11 June.
After driving down in the drizzle,
the weather became clear and
sunny for all the sport to proceed.
160 students travelled down on
three buses and three minivans
for a big day of sports at various
venues in Ashburton.
The amazing EA Networks Centre
hosted the Badminton, Netball and
Basketball games, the Ashburton
Domain held the Football and
Hockey games, and the Celtic Rugby Club hosted the Boys U15
game there. The Golf was played at the Ashburton Golf Club.
BHS held onto the trophy for another year! But it was close, a
draw in the end - but because we won the trophy last year, we get
to hold it for another year.
Pukehinau Opens
Burnside High wins the Canterbury
Schools Programming Contest
Burnside High School sent fifteen teams to the annual Canterbury
Schools Programming Contest,
held at the University of
Canterbury on Saturday 22nd
June.
The contest was attended by over
ninety students from ten schools
around the region and was one of
the biggest in recent years, filling
two labs at the University.
The competition requires
participants to write code to solve
a series of increasingly complex problems over three hours, and
the top problems are often more complex than you would find
in most university algorithms courses. Former winners of these
competitions have often gone on to represent New Zealand for
programming.
The top honours went to Leon Wu and Miles McGrath who
managed to answer all but one question in the time limit.
They were very closely followed by another Burnside team
consisting of Cameron Martin and Aditya Bansal who were only a
few points behind.
