THE FEMINIST Clown Posse 

is about to be unleashed on 

Lyttelton. But those with 

coulrophobia need not 

worry as these clowns aren’t 

scary. 

The group’s sold-out 

show next Wednesday 

promises to bring of fits of 

giggles to even those with 

a phobia of clowns. 

Renowned Australian 

entertainer Tessa Waters 

(pictured left), who now 

lives in Lyttelton, coined 

the group’s name to be 

“positively provocative”. 

“Clowns are seen 

as sort of innocent 

and putting it with 

feminism, which is 

quite a strong idea, 

will hopefully either 

make people interested 

in what we’re doing 

or realise it’s not for 

them,” she said. 

Waters’ clown 

troupe is part of the 

line-up for LytFest, 

starting on Friday. 

Festivities will start 

with the free opening 

party at Albion Square 

from 5-7pm.

first plunge with the Scarborough 

Dippers as they raise funds for the 

community, and she’s keen to go 

back for more. 

The city councillor 

went along 

on Monday, and 

described the 

experience as 

exhilarating.

with such an 

amazing group of

to fundraise for.” 

The annual ‘Wet July’ challenge 

started this week. All funds raised 

will go towards a new defibrillator 

at Taylors Mistake and the 

Sumner-based mental health 

initiative Surf Ora. 

Participants are tasked to take 

a dip in the sea every morning for 

the month of July. 

Templeton expressed gratitude 

for the other participants, as 

they helped her navigate the 

cold waters. 

“I was well distracted by a 

couple of regular dippers, who 

reminded me to breath through it 

and were really encouraging.” 

As winter is in full swing, the 

water is expected to be around 

9-11 degrees.

THE WINTER Fireworks 

Spectacular is set to light up 

the sky over New Brighton on 

Saturday. Here is everything you 

need to know to enjoy the free 

annual event. 

Key details 

A medley of 80s hits will 

accompany this year’s fireworks 

show at New Brighton Beach on 

Saturday, July 6. 

The show is on from 5.30- 

8pm, with the event zone based 

at the car park north of the New 

Brighton Pier. 

The fireworks will start at 

7.30pm and run for about 15 

minutes. 

There will be family-friendly 

entertainment, hosted by The 

Hits FM, 80s beats by DJZ, and 

food stalls on-site. 

If the fireworks are postponed 

due to bad weather, it will be 

announced via the What’s On 

Facebook/Instagram page and 

via The Hits. The postponement 

date is Sunday, July 7. 

Bus services 

Metro is providing free bus 

rides after the event, between 8- 

8.30pm, from Oram Ave. 

The Route 5 and 60 buses will 

be taking their usual routes, with 

additional buses taking the 5 

and 60 routes as far as the Bus 

Interchange. Normal fares apply 

after 8.30pm. 

A park and ride service will 

also be operating between 

Eastgate Mall and Oram Ave 

between 4.30-6.15pm – normal 

fares apply. 

Buses will depart every 10 

minutes from Russell St. The 

return trip to Eastgate Mall on 

the Route 5 bus is free between 

8-8.30pm, leaving from Oram 

Ave. 

Both Route 5 and 60 buses will 

have extra services running, but 

people should allow extra time 

for their journey. For more information,

Road access, parking 

Road closures, no on-street parking, 

and one-way traffic will be 

in place around New Brighton 

Mall between 4-9.30pm. 

Those travelling by car are 

encouraged to carpool and walk

to people with an official mobility 

sticker at the New Brighton 

beach south ramp car park. 

The best way to get there 

will be via Bridge St. Bike racks 

will be available on Marine Pde 

near the playground. 

What not to bring 

Don’t bring your pet to the event 

or your own fireworks or drones. 

The New Brighton car park 

event zone is also smoke/vapefree, 

and an alcohol ban in the 

area includes any open bottles 

in the public space or private 

vehicles.

and Queenstown-based juggler 

Paul Klaass are part of the line-up. 

Under Waters’ tutelage, 22 

women and non-binary people 

have been learning the art of 

clowning through a feminist lens 

at the Lyttelton Recreation Centre. 

“The clown scene internationally 

is quite male dominated, so I 

was very interested in empowering 

other voices.” 

She has more than a decade of 

experience in creating acclaimed 

comedy, theatre and short films 

which have played to sell-out 

crowds in Australia and the 

United Kingdom. 

Waters has found traditional 

clown training to be restrictive, 

with women typically limited to 

feminine and sidekick roles. 

“There’s the idea that women 

always had to be quite small 

and pretty and quirky. I’m quite 

interested in taking up some space 

and being loud and naughty and 

disruptive,” she said. 

The posse ranges in age from 

early 20s to those in their 60s,

interaction. 

“It’s all very based in that 

connection with the audience and 

finding gold in failures.” 

Waters moved to Lyttelton from 

Wellington in 2022 and immersed 

herself in the arts scene. 

“It’s full of really interesting 

artists and the community spirit 

here is just beautiful.”

More money 

in LTP to fight 

climate change 

RATEPAYERS will bear the 

brunt of a council decision to 

put more money into the Long 

Term Plan to help the city build 

resilience to climate change. 

Two options to invest the 

additional funding were put 

forward in the draft LTP 2024- 

34, both of which were agreed by 

councillors last week following 

public consultation. 

An extra $1.8 million in 

operational funding has been 

brought forward for climate 

adaptation work to reduce 

flooding and boost community 

preparedness.

Councillors also agreed to 

establish a climate resilience 

fund to manage future changes 

to city council assets. 

The additional investment 

will mean a 0.25 per cent rates 

increase in the first year of the 

fund. This will rise by 0.25 per 

cent for each year of the LTP. It 

will lead to a 2.25 per cent rates 

increase by 2033/34, at which 

time the fund could contain up 

to $127 million. 

This fund may be used to move 

or raise roads considered to be 

a lifeline for the community, 

protect water infrastructure, 

and ensure facilities exposed to 

hazards are more resilient. 

Said Mayor Phil Mauger: 

“We had a lot of feedback 

from the community that 

they want to see strong 

investment in climate change 

mitigation. 

“Our low-lying coastal and 

inland parts of Christchurch 

are going to be increasingly 

impacted as sea levels rise so 

it’s important that we start 

preparing now.”

take a range of projects to help

Pork belly and parsnips to beat the cold 

The days are cold, the 

nights even more so. 

Time to share food that 

will bolster us against 

the weather; good things 

to eat that will light up 

the dark days of deepest 

winter, bringing cheer and 

conviviality, writes Nigel 

Slater 

Slow roast belly pork 

with butter beans and 

balsamic vinegar 

A big dish this, with thick, 

jagged slices of pork on the bone, 

a pile of steaming butter beans 

at their side. Save this for those 

who positively relish sucking 

and gnawing at rib bones and 

chewing at crackling. 

Ingredients 

Serves 4 

1.9kg pork belly, bones in, skin 

scored 

2 medium onions 

2 medium carrots 

2 stalks celery 

3tbsp olive oil 

6 sprigs rosemary 

3 cloves garlic 

375g tomatoes 

500ml vegetable stock 

1 x 700g jar butter beans or 2 x 

400g tins 

1tbsp balsamic vinegar 

Method 

• Take the pork out of the 

fridge and leave it uncovered in a 

cool place for an hour or so. 

• Heat the oven to 220C fan. 

Rub the pork with salt and place 

it skin side up in a roasting tin. 

Roast for 25 minutes or so till 

the skin is a little puffed and 

starting to crackle, then lower 

the heat to 160C and cook for 

about 1½ hours. 

• Meanwhile, peel and 

roughly chop the onions. Trim 

the carrots, cut them in half 

lengthways, then into short 

pieces of about 1cm. Cut the 

celery into pieces of a similar 

size. 

• Warm the oil in a medium to 

large saucepan over a moderate 

heat, add the onion, carrots 

and celery, and leave to cook 

for about 15 minutes, stirring 

regularly, until the vegetables 

are starting to soften. While 

they cook, pull the leaves from 

the rosemary sprigs and chop 

them finely. Peel the garlic, slice 

very thinly then stir, with the 

rosemary, into the softening 

vegetables and continue cooking. 

• Roughly chop the tomatoes, 

then add them to the pan, 

stirring the mixture well. Once 

the tomatoes have softened and 

collapsed – a matter of 5-10 

minutes – pour in the stock 

and bring to the boil. Season 

with salt and black pepper and 

turn down the heat, leaving 

everything to simmer for 10 

minutes. 

• Drain the beans and stir into 

the vegetable mixture together 

with the balsamic vinegar, then 

set aside. 

• When the pork has been 

cooking for 1 hour, remove 

briefly from the oven and 

transfer the beans around the 

meat, taking care not to get 

any on the crackling. Continue 

roasting for 30 minutes or until 

the meat is tender. 

Roast parsnips with honey 

and ricotta 

Glistening with honey, ricotta 

and thyme, roast parsnips are 

something to serve with slices 

of cold roast meat or, as I did 

the other day, with baked flat 

mushrooms with tarragon 

and lemon butter. You can 

roast them without the initial 

steaming, but that can result in 

tougher, chewy parsnips. Better, 

I think, to steam them first, 

which results in a fluffy interior. 

Ingredients 

Enough for 4 as side dish 

900g parsnips 

30g butter 

3tbsp olive or vegetable oil 

3tbsp runny honey 

1tbsp thyme leaves 

100g ricotta 

Method 

• Get a pan of water on to 

boil and have a steamer basket 

or colander to hand. Peel the 

parsnips, cut them in half and 

then into short lengths, rather 

like the size you do for roast

• Lower the parsnips into the 

steamer basket, place it over the 

boiling water and cover tightly 

with a lid. Adjust the heat as 

necessary to keep the water 

boiling without boiling over, 

and let the vegetables steam 

for 20 minutes till approaching 

tenderness. 

• Set the oven at 210C fan. 

Melt the butter and olive oil 

in a roasting tin in the oven, 

then add the steamed parsnips. 

Toss them in the oil so they are 

glistening, then roast for about 

35-50 minutes till they are 

golden and lightly crisp. 

• Season the parsnips with 

salt and black pepper, trickle the 

honey over them, then return to 

the oven for a further 7 minutes. 

• Mix the thyme and ricotta 

together. Place spoonfuls of the 

cold ricotta on the hot, sizzling 

parsnips and serve immediately.

Hybrid the jewel in the Qashqai crown 

IT’S FASCINATING to look back 

at new models launched here 18 

months ago that were touted as 

having the ability to shake and stir 

our market, to see if they delivered 

on those expectations. 

One of these vehicles is the 

latest dapper looking new Qashqai 

compact urban SUV, with a 

creative fuel saving low emission 

hybrid power train and host of 

safety connectivity technology. 

You do get more Qashqai 

for your dollar with this latest 

iteration bigger across the board. 

It’s 4425mm long (+31mm), 

1625mm tall (+30mm), and 

1835mm wide (+29mm), while the 

wheelbase has grown to 2665mm 

(+19mm). 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

There’s are some interesting 

variations that add more variety in 

the powertrain department, with 

a pint sized but punchy 1.3-litre 

turbo petrol, and the option of 

Nissan’s innovative e-POWER 

hybrid system. The latter carries a 

hefty $7k price premium over the 

turbo petrol motor. 

Petrol not e-Power dominates 

the six strong model range 

comprising four petrol variants 

starting with the price leading 

$46,120 ST and tracking through 

to $57,120. The more exclusive 

e-Power hybrid club is limited to 

the upmarket Ti and Ti-L priced at 

$60,120 and $65,120 respectively. 

The Ti-L e-Power was chosen for 

this road test.

Most hybrid systems use an 

electric motor and a petrol engine 

to drive their wheels. Nissan’s 

e-Power turns that notion on its 

head with its wheels powered 

exclusively by an electric motor. 

The second-generation e-Power 

technology in the Qashqai is the 

same as the Nissan X-Trail, and 

turns up to work and play with 

effortless acceleration and refined 

performance. 

It’s a strong high-energy 

performer with 140kW of power 

and 330Nm of torque taking 

charge and doing everything so 

effortlessly. Thanks to the pure 

electric motor, there’s none of 

the power-delivery hesitancy 

associated with an internal 

combustion engine or traditional 

hybrid systems – just seamless and 

seemingly endless get up and go. 

In the lighter Qashqai, the 

power-to-weight ratio is more 

favourable than the heftier X-Trail 

giving it a noticeable performance 

edge. A CVT (Constant Variable 

Transmission) offers improved 

fuel economy thanks to better 

ratio coverage that reduces both 

friction, and the vehicle’s appetite 

for fuel. 

For a compact urban SUV it is 

roomier than most with plenty 

of passenger and load space. The 

Ti-L supplied for this road test is 

the jewel in the Qashqai crown 

that dazzles and seduces with a 

bevy of luxury features. There’s a 

Panoramic Glass Roof and electric 

sunshade, a black headliner and 

ambient interior lighting. Cabin 

technology features a 10.8-inch 

colour head-up display, and a 

premium 10-speaker Bose audio 

system. The seats are made of 

3D quilted premium leather that 

would look more at home on the 

luxury furniture in gentrified 

country manor. 

The Qashqai has the 

handling jump on several of its 

competitors with Nissan opting 

for an advanced multi-link rear 

suspension. 

I saw the benefits of this 

suspension arrangement when the 

test car was navigating badly worn 

and uneven road surfaces. The 

upside with this suspension set-up 

is a stronger connection between 

driver, vehicle and road – what 

more could you possible want? 

Well-controlled body-roll, and 

the effective ousting of road noise 

and vibrations from the passenger 

compartment are impressive. 

If you had to be picky, the 

steering, even with it revised ratios 

offering quicker corner turn-in 

response, still doesn’t feel as well 

resolved as rest of the vehicle.
