2 SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
Baseball
Josh Doney
St. Mary’s
(Junior)
Do-it-all Doney was exactly that for the
Spartans, leading them to the state championship
game in Division 3. Despite a tough loss to
Oakmont Regional – no shame in that – it was a
spring to remember for the lefty. Doney (93 K)
led St. Mary’s in innings pitched (74), wins (9),
ERA (0.65), complete-game shutouts (4), and
was named MVP of the Doug Mullins Memorial
Baseball Tournament.
Nick Berube
Swampscott
(Junior)
An “excellent ballplayer,” according to coach
Joe Caponigro, Berube only struck out four times
this season – how’s that for a statistic? In total,
the Swampscott star batted .373 with 28 hits, two
home runs, 12 RBI, and 14 runs. He also swiped
eight bags.
Will McCafferty
Lynn Tech
(Senior)
He certainly had the eye of the Lynn Tech
Tiger. McCafferty finished a successful career
with a .395 batting average to go with 18 runs,
seven steals, and a Commonwealth Athletic
Conference Pitcher of the Year award (72 K,
2.25 ERA, 8-1 record). “In addition to being a
great leader and impact player on our team, his
greatest stat recorded was not what he did on the
field, but off it,” said coach Eddie Lewis.
Cam Connolly
Peabody
(Senior)
Your Northeastern Conference Player of
the Year – and for good reason. For the 17-4
Tanners, Connolly pitched 65 1/3 innings,
striking out 79 batters with an ERA of 1.39. He
wasn’t too shabby at the plate, either, with a .302
average to go with 19 hits.
Cam Soroko
Saugus
(Junior)
Soroko was named a Northeastern Conference
All-Star this season, keeping Saugus fans
entertained at the ballpark all spring long. He’ll
play Division 1 baseball at Bryant University
this fall. Standout games from Soroko included
an April matchup in which he threw a complete
game against Shawsheen (96 pitches, 11 K)
and another 11-strikeout, three-hit performance
against Swampscott.
Morenel Castro
KIPP
(Senior)
Frankly, a KIPP Academy legend with a
polished record on the football field and baseball
diamond, Castro did it again this spring. He hit
one of the longest home runs Fraser Field saw
this season back in April, and completed his
career with a strong batting average.
Alijah Wallace
Lynn English
(Senior)
Lynn English fell just short of the state
tournament – missing the action by one game
– but Wallace was on point from beginning to
end. The pitcher went 5-0 this season with a 2.76
ERA and 30 strikeouts.
Tyler Adamo
Lynnfield
(Junior)
A two-year captain for the Pioneers, Adamo
certainly backed up his title with a .427 average,
32 hits, 19 RBI, and 16 stolen bases. The Cape
Ann League Large Player of the Year picked up
four saves on the mound, to boot.
Selections by The Item staff were based on coaches'
recommendations, individual accomplishments, and
overall impact on team success.
ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 3
Baseball
Almani Gerardo
Lynn Classical
(Senior)
What a senior season it was for leadoff man
Gerardo, who led Lynn Classical with a .390
batting average. He also stole 25 bags and was
named an Agganis All-Star for his efforts. He’ll
suit up for Franklin Pierce next season and “will
be tough to replace,” according to first-year
coach Leon Elwell.
St. Mary's Josh Doney
Chris Cannuscio
Marblehead
(Senior)
If you watched a game at Seaside Park in
Marblehead this spring, Cannuscio was probably
the one wheeling-and-dealing on the mound,
while also delivering at the plate. He batted
.385 this season with 25 hits and 18 RBI. The
Magician also recorded six wins with a 1.41
ERA and 60 strikeouts across 59 2/3 innings.
4 SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
Softball
Abby Bettencourt
Peabody
(Senior)
Off to Brown University to suit up for the
softball team, Bettencourt left it all on the
diamond for Peabody this spring. At the plate,
she batted .638 with 51 hits, 39 runs, 32 RBI,
and eight HR. On the mound, the ace delivered
with a 0.96 ERA alongside 186 strikeouts and 14
wins across 117 innings pitched. For a four-year
career, Bettencourt made history after being
named the Northeastern Conference Player of the
Year in each and every one of them.
Tessa Francis
Marblehead
(Sophomore)
For Marblehead’s softball team, which
shocked the state with a trip to the Final 4 in
Division 2, Francis commanded the ship. In
the circle, she tossed 156 innings with 269
strikeouts, 20 wins, and a stellar ERA of 0.94.
Nevaeh Eth
Lynn Classical
(Senior)
A do-it-all shortstop, Lynn Classical star Eth
made her mark in her last high school season –
and then some. She batted .525 to go with seven
triples, three home runs, 30 RBI, and 32 runs.
The Ram was named a Greater Boston League
All-Star for her production.
Logan Lomasney
Peabody
(Senior)
In a Peabody offense chock full of power,
Lomasney provided a lot of it with eight
home runs this spring. For the 18-3 Tanners,
who reached the Round of 16 in Division 1,
Lomasney finished with a .494 batting average to
go with 38 hits, 35 runs, and 32 RBI.
Morgan Hubbard
Lynnfield
(Junior)
“Clearly one of the best players on the North
Shore,” as said by coach Hector Longo, and it’s
hard to disagree. The junior shortstop went home
with a .478 average and struck out just twice this
season. Add 25 runs, 18 RBI, and a home run,
and what a season it was for the Pioneer. “It felt
like from the opening game of the year, every hit
she had was huge,” Longo said.
Gigi Aupont
Bishop Fenwick
(Senior)
Despite the Crusaders being ineligible for
the MIAA state tournament due to a schoolwide
ban, Aupont made the most of her regular
season. In 69 innings pitched, she impressed
with 116 strikeouts, six wins, and a 1.65 ERA.
Taylor Deleidi
Saugus
(Junior)
Saugus didn’t have much depth with its
pitching, so Deleidi started all 21 games for
the Sachems and pitched all but two innings.
The end result was successful, however, as the
ace went home with 10 wins, 73 strikeouts, and
nearly 134 innings pitched. Offensively, she was
second on the team in batting average (.403)
alongside 21 runs and 13 RBI.
Olivia Barletta
Swampscott
(Junior)
A junior captain for the Big Blue, Barletta
caught eyes with a .528 average, .830 slugging
percentage, 25 runs, 10 doubles, and two home
runs. Better yet, she stole 14 bases and was “a
great captain, student, and kid,” as said by coach
Brittany Coppinger.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE
2024 ALL-STAR ATHLETES

ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 5
Softball
Arianna Laboy
Lynn English
(Senior)
With the turnaround Lynn English’s softball
team has made the last two seasons, a big reason
for that has been star Bulldog Laboy. In the
circle, she was good for nearly 10 strikeouts any
given night – on top of reliable production at the
plate. Better yet, she showed out in the Agganis
Game with two strikeouts and just three hits
allowed across four innings.
Peabody's Logan Lomasney
Brooke Moloney
St. Mary’s
(Junior)
Moloney was everywhere for the Spartans
this spring. Nearly every outing, she went home
with multiple hits and a handful of RBI. She
was named MVP of the John Holland Memorial
Softball Tournament, with her best game of the
season coming against Concord-Carlisle (5-for-
5, 4 R, 2 RBI).
6 SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
Boys lacrosse
Ian Brown
Lynn
(Junior)
The Jets failed to make the state
tournament this season, but Brown put on
a show and led Lynn on, nearly, a nightly
basis. From his six-goal performance against
Lowell to three consecutive hat-tricks
(Somerville, Salem, Mystic Valley), Brown
was more than reliable.
Aiden Haight
Peabody
(Junior)
You could say he’s one of the best goalies
in the Bay State, and it’d be hard to argue. For
the Tanners, Haight was the team’s Defensive
Player of the Year with 272 saves, a 63.5 save
percentage, and 45 ground balls between the
pipes.
Kelan Cardinal
Lynnfield
(Junior)
Cardinal made his presence felt in more ways
than one. Sometimes, he would net a handful of
goals, while other times, he would go home with
five or six assists. In only three years, the Cape
Ann League Player of the Year is already first
all-time in program history with 233 points.
Joey Marshall
Bishop Fenwick
(Senior)
Fenwick was ineligible to compete in the
MIAA state tournament due to a school-wide
suspension, but Marshall made the most of his
regular season. Not only did he score seven
goals in a game against Hamilton-Wenham – yes,
seven – the Crusader finished with 41 goals and
21 assists for a total of 62 points.
Liam Keaney
Swampscott
(Junior)
He’s one of the more dynamic players on the
North Shore, who sported a nine-point game this
season with four goals and five assists against
Saugus. Keaney, a playmaker Magic Johnson
would admire, dished out 49 assists to go with
41 goals.
Johnny Lucas
Peabody
(Senior)
He polished it off with an MVP award in the
Agganis Game (2 goals), but Peabody’s Lucas
was on a tear all spring long. As the Tanners’
team MVP, the do-it-all defenseman scored 17
goals, facilitated 14 assists, and scooped up 160
ground balls.
Jason Rothwell
Swampscott
(Sophomore)
The Big Blue, helmed by coach Geoff
Beckett, surprised a lot of people this spring with
a strong run in the Division 4 state tournament
(Final 4). A big reason for that was Rothwell,
who can hold his own against any goal-scorer in
the area. The sniper finished the spring with 51
goals and 16 assists.
CONGRATULATIONS TO
ALL THE ITEM ALL-STARS
FOR A FANTASTIC SEASON
ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 7
Boys lacrosse
Cam Waldman
Marblehead
(Senior)
This Marblehead Magician was, well, exactly
that with 42 goals and 11 assists this spring.
He played a big role in his team’s 11 wins.
Despite a heartbreaking overtime loss in the
state tournament, Waldman came to play every
night and made his presence felt in a tough
Northeastern Conference.
Jake Vana
St. John’s Prep
(Senior)
In Michael Jordan-esque fashion, Vana
completed a legendary high school career
with seven state championships (7-0 across
hockey, lacrosse, and soccer). After another
title-winning season with The Prep this
spring, Vana scored 39 goals and dished out
22 assists for a total of 61 points – physical
play and leadership, included.
St. John Prep's Jake Vana
Will Norton
Lynnfield
(Junior)
A pure goal-scorer – that’s the only way to
describe him. This season, Norton was named
Lynnfield’s Offensive Player of the Year with a
single-season record of 96 goals. For a career,
the sniper has netted 194 to lead an explosive
Pioneer offense.
8 SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
Girls lacrosse
Brooke Lomasney
Peabody
(Junior)
Blink, and you just might miss Peabody’s
Lomasney plowing down the field in an instant.
The Tanner finished with 81 goals and 56 assists
for a total of 137 points. The captain
also eclipsed the program’s
career point record (252),
one that stood for seven
years.
Coco Clopton
Swampscott
(Senior)
A senior captain, Clopton led by example on
the turf. The Swampscott star broke the school’s
career goals record (172) as she prepares for
a collegiate career with UMass Lowell. This
spring, she netted 59 goals to go with 34 assists.
“In addition to driving the team’s offense, she
was the primary draw control specialist,” said
coach Al Eaton.
Kylie Bloom
Bishop Fenwick
(Junior)
A player who did a little bit of everything for
the Crusaders, Bloom scored 30 goals and dished
out 30 assists this spring. Add strong defense
and hustle on any given night, and you’ve got
yourself a great player representing your school.
Swampscott's Coco Clopton
Maddie Forbes
Marblehead
(Junior)
There were a handful of hat-tricks, a four-goal
game, and even a five-goal performance from
Forbes this season. The Magicians’ offensive
threat most nights, she scored 40 goals and
facilitated 25 assists for a total of 65 points.

ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 9
Girls lacrosse
Ally Bettencourt
Peabody
(Junior)
Madi Barrett
Peabody
(Junior)
Ava Nason
St. Mary’s
(Sophomore)
The Tanners finished with the Northeastern
Conference crown this season, and it’s hard
to think that would’ve happened without
Bettencourt. The dynamic goal-scorer finished
with 54 of them, to go with 35 assists and a total
of 89 points.
Avery Laundry
Swampscott
(Junior)
Eaton describes this star player as “not
afraid to go to goal, and capable of scoring
from difficult angles.” Well, I’d have to agree.
Laundry scored 55 goals, dished out 20 assists,
and was successful in the draw circle, too.
“Avery is the one to watch next season,” Eaton
added.
Talk about a dynamic goal-scorer – and, I
mean, dynamic – Barrett was exactly that this
spring. She eclipsed the 50-goal mark (52) and
even dished out 17 assists in the process. Better
yet, in early May, Barrett secured her 200th
career point.
The Spartans picked up 11 wins before
meeting their end against powerhouse Nauset in
the state tournament. As for how the Spartans got
there, look no further than Nason, who led the
statistics categories, nearly, every game. Back in
April, she scored eight goals in not one, not two,
but three consecutive contests.
Taylor Valiton
Lynnfield
(Junior)
Valiton has taken the high school world by
storm and did it again her junior year, scoring
97 goals and eclipsing the 100-point mark (108).
But that’s not all. She also controlled 148 draws,
scooped up 18 ground balls, and recorded four
interceptions for the Pioneers.
Lynnfield's Taylor Valiton
Kathryn Commoss
Marblehead
(Freshman)
Commoss made her presence felt all spring
long, scoring 40 goals and dishing out 14 assists.
For coach Annie Madden’s Magicians, Commoss
played an important role in the team’s seven
wins.

10 SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
Boys Tennis
Mark McDuffee
St. John’s Prep
(Senior)
A three-year starter for The Prep, McDuffee’s
Catholic Conference All-Star nod was welldeserved
this season. Plus, he received his team’s
Coach’s award. He went 19-1 with his doubles
partner, Alex Melville, and sports a career record
of 49-3.
Dan Levin
Lynnfield
(Senior)
Levin checked off a few more boxes in a
prolific career with the Pioneers. He finished
18-1 (career record of 66-7) and was named
Cape Ann League Player of the Year. It’s the
second MVP nod for the first singles star.
Mika Garber
Marblehead
(Senior)
Alex Melville
St. John’s Prep
(Senior)
Also a Catholic Conference All-Star, Melville
put on a show with his doubles partner, Mark
McDuffee, to sport a 19-1 record. He’s 37-2
all-time, received the Coach’s award this spring,
and the duo secured the winning point in a
three-setter against Concord-Carlisle to keep the
Eagles undefeated.
Charles Schepens
Swampscott
(Senior)
The Big Blue advanced to the Final 4 this
season, and it’s hard to think they could have
done so without Schepens. The always-reliable
tennis player,” said coach Jen Bishop.
This senior went out with a bang. Not only
does he have a Northeastern Conference Most
Valuable Player award under his belt, but went
10-3 this season (5-1 NEC), was all-NEC for
first singles, and is headed to the University of
Wisconsin in the fall to study computer science.
Lynn English
(Senior)
Marblehead's Mika Garber
The captain played “an instrumental role” in
the Bulldogs reaching the state tournament for
the first time since 2006, according to coach
Kerry King. The Greater Boston League All-Star
won six matches this season at first singles.
and for good reason. This Pioneer received her
team's Outstanding Achievement award for the
third consecutive year and sported a 22-3 record
at first singles.
Talk about a game-changer. After playing first
doubles last season, Alves made her presence
felt at second singles this spring. She went 20-4
and received Lynnfield’s Most Improved Player
award for the second consecutive year.
She was only a freshman this season, but I
don't think that meant anything to Sotomayer.
The Ram won a lot of matches in 6-0, 6-0
fashion and was undefeated at first singles.
Lacey Murphy
Bishop Fenwick
(Senior)
Lynnfield's Lily Alves
Murphy put on a show for the Crusaders
and went 10-6. Despite Fenwick’s school-wide
most of her spring. “Lacey was a co-captain
12 SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
Alex Jackson
Peabody
(Junior)
What more is there to say about Jackson?
Plus, he’s only a junior. He broke Northeastern
Conference records in shot put and discus this
season, was the MIAA’s Division 2 shot put
champion, all-New England in two events, and
was a New Balance National Championship
qualifier in shot (14th) , discus (49th), hammer
(21st).
Aithan Bezanson
St. John’s Prep
(Senior)
This St. John’s Prep Eagle flies down the
track, and his resume backs it up. The All-
American was sixth in the country in the
decathlon, the MIAA’s Meet of Champions and
Division 1 winner in the pentathlon, and broke
school records in both events.
William Cerrutti
Marblehead
(Junior)
All of this, and he’s only a junior. This spring
for the Magicians, Cerrutti was exactly that. He
ran a 4:19.65 mile (state champion), 2:01.02
800m (5th in D3), and was a member of the
4xMile team that broke a school record at the D3
relays.
Zahir Mitchell
Lynnfield
(Sophomore)
The multi-sport athlete received piles of
hardware this spring, and it’s easy to see why. He
racked up three top-10 finishes at the Division
5 state tournament, and was the anchor of the
Pioneers’ 4x100 school record team.
Eamonn McHale
Lynn English
(Senior)
McHale was a force to be reckoned with
on the track. Better yet, he was named Lynn
English’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year to
complete a tremendous career in athletics (track
and swimming). In cross country, he’s been a
top-five finisher in the Greater Boston League
multiple times, an All-Star, Division 1 state
qualifier, and first-place runner in the Lynn All-
City Meet.
Scott Amin
St. Mary’s
(Senior)
This Spartan – who was the No. 1 high jumper
in the state during the season – broke a personal
record in the event, sporting a 6-6, which is tied
for first in St. Mary’s history. He also recorded a
21-8 in the long jump (1st in St. Mary’s history)
ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 13
Girls Track AND FIELD
Alessandra Forgione
Peabody
(Junior)
What a spring it was for Forgione, who was
crowned Northeastern Conference champion in
both the javelin and discus. The Tanner placed
second (javelin) at the Division 2 state meet,
second in the Meet of Champions, and competed
in the New England Championships, Penn
Relays, and New Balance Nationals. Her best
throw of the season was 132'.
Jirrelis De Jesus
Lynn Tech
(Senior)
This Lynn Tech Tiger won four events
(100m hurdles, 200m, high jump, triple jump)
at the Lynn All-City Meet. She also led Tech
to the Commonwealth Athletic Conference
Championship and was its top girl in every dual
meet.
Rachael Albert
Marblehead
(Senior)
When it comes to the discus, Marblehead’s
ace probably wrote the book. With her school
record toss of 113-11, Albert placed third in the
NEC championship, third in Division 3, fifth in
the state, and 14th in New England.
Marianna Kay
Bishop Fenwick
(Sophomore)
Kay was a girl on a mission this spring. She
won the 2-mile in the Catholic Central League
and was on Fenwick’s third-place 4x400 relay
team during the league meet. She placed 17th at
the Weston Twilight Meet, running a personal
best of 11:43, and “was on the DMR team at the
Division 5 state relay meet that placed second
and broke the school record,” according to coach
Manny Cruz.
Marblehead's Marrietta O'Connell
Destiny Okoye
Saugus
(Freshman)
Okoye poured in a top-10 performance
at Divisionals, and was tied for first in the
Northeastern Conference with a high jump of
5-0. She also ran a 13.00 in the 100m and was a
part of Saugus’ fifth-place 4x100 relay team.
Marrietta O'Connell
Marblehead
(Sophomore)
O’Connell did it all for the Magicians, and
can run with the best of them. She ran a 5:10.60
mile and 11:03.44 2-mile, giving her first-place
nods for both events in the NEC championship.
O’Connell was the third best miler in Division 3
and 11th best 2-miler in the state.

14 SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2024 ITEM ALL-STARS SPRING 2024
Volleyball
Long Pham
Lynn Classical
(Sophomore)
“The heart-and-soul of our defense,”
according to coach Chris LeBlanc, Pham’s
Greater Boston League All-Star nod was welldeserved.
Not only did he commit just 15 errors
on 668 received serves, but collected 361 digs,
42 aces, and a pair of state tournament wins for
the Rams – all in just their second season as a
program.
Ederick Gonzalez
Lynn Tech
(Senior)
Just call him one of the more versatile players
in the Bay State. From the basketball court to the
volleyball court, Gonzalez dominated on both
this year. He just finished the spring with 156
kills (8.2 per match), 128 digs (6.7 per match),
and 40 aces (2.1 per match), helping his Tigers
reach the second round of the state tournament.
Cole Morrison
St. John’s Prep
(Senior)
Morrison defined the word “playmaker” this
season – just look at his numbers. Prep’s do-it-all
man registered 396 assists (913 across his career)
and averaged 6.7 assists per set.
Viet Tran
Lynn Classical
(Junior)
LeBlanc refers to Tran as the player who
“paced our offense all season long,” and it’s hard
to disagree with that. A captain and GBL All-
Star, he finished the season with 246 kills (giving
him 506 across a two-year career), a hitting
percentage of .131, 181 digs, and 38 aces while
serving at 89.8 percent.
Tighe Lusk
St. John’s Prep
(Senior)
The Prep picked up 11 wins this season with
Lusk establishing himself as one of the more
consistent players on the North Shore. The
always-reliable Eagle went home with a .490
hitting percentage and averaged 2.5 blocks per
set.
Filipe De Oliveira
Lynn Tech
(Senior)
Tech – in just its second season as a program
– picked up a state tournament win behind coach
Kaitlyn Wechsler. A big part of that success
goes to Filipe De Oliveira, a senior libero who
fi n i s h e d w i t h 3 4 6 d i g s a n d 2 1 . 6 d i g s p e r m a t c h .
