Council President Moreno Recognizes 30 Years
of Cash Money Records at YouTube Leaders
and Legends Ball in Los Angeles
New Orleans Agenda
Council President Helena Moreno
took a day trip to Los Angeles to
honor and recognize the success
of Baby and Slim Williams and
highlight their dedication to helping
their hometown City of New
Orleans at the YouTube Leaders
and Legends Ball, which celebrates
entrepreneurial achievements and
groundbreaking founders in Black
music and culture.
In her remarks, Councilmember
Moreno ensured that the industry
leaders from Los Angeles knew
how much the Williams Brothers
meant to New Orleans and that
no matter how much success they
achieved, never forgot where they
came from.
Cash Money Record Co-Founder Bryan “Birdman” Williams, New
Orleans City Councilmember Helena Moreno, and Dwayne “Lil Wayne”
Carter at a recent celebration for the label’s accomplishments of making
impact in the music industry.
Moreno emphasized all the
work Baby and Slim have done
to support the people of New
Orleans, including donating
hundreds of thousands to keep
people who lost their jobs from
eviction during the Pandemic,
gifting thousands of meals during
holidays, sponsoring local
health screenings, assisting
those formerly incarcerated with
re-entering our community, and
much more.
“It is so clear that these two
men who built Cash Money Records
understand that to those
who much is given, much is required…and
they give back with
such love and compassion to the
neighborhood they called home
and the City of New Orleans
that loves them like family,” said
Council President Moreno. “Their
story is a source of inspiration for
generations to come, proving that
with vision and tenacity, dreams
can indeed come true. Congrats
on 30 years of Cash Money Records!”
“Birdman and Slim embody New
Orleans to their core. They defied
the odds, raising up some of rap
and hip hop’s most iconic figures to
superstardom and shattering sales
records while doing it,” said Lyor
Cohen, Global Head of Music at
YouTube, in a statement.
Recognition of the 30th Anniversary
of Cash Money Records will
continue with a major celebration
and concert during this year’s Essence
Festival.
Dillard University Bleu Dreamers among
Semi-Finalists in 2nd Annual CIEE UNHCR
Data News Staff Edited
Report
The Dillard University team,
known as the Bleu Dreamers, were
selected among 36 Semi-Finalists
in the 2nd Annual CIEE UNHCR
Student Challenge, and traveled to
London to present their idea for a
chance at the top prize.
The Bleu Dreamers are comprised
of:
Lucine Flores (Captain) – Criminal
Justice, Junior (New Orleans, LA)
Keymoni Coleman – Criminal
Justice, Computer Science minor,
Junior (Killeen, TX)
Maisha Chinagozi – Chemistry,
Junior (Alexandria, LA)
Roderick Morning-Trice – Political
Science, Sophomore (Birmingham,
AL)
Among the 130 global teams that
participated in Round 1, 36 teams
representing 47 universities, 21
countries, and 132 students were
selected to advance to Round 2 to
compete. Of the 47 universities represented,
Dillard University is the
only HBCU.
Coleman shared that the experience
deepened their understanding
of refugee challenges and fostered
international collaboration. “As a
group of Black students from Dillard
University, an HBCU, this journey
not only broadened our global
perspective but also deepened our
understanding of refugees’ unique
challenges. Engaging with diverse
experts and leaders dedicated
to refugee support allowed us to
gather invaluable insights and foster
international collaboration. This
experience enriched our study,
equipping us with the knowledge
and inspiration to advocate for and
implement effective educational
strategies for refugees worldwide.”
The team’s ultimate goal was
to benefit forcibly displaced and
refugee youth. They envisioned
implementing practical solutions to
improve lives and provide opportunities
for this marginalized population.
Their efforts are a beacon of
hope in the face of global challenges.
This collaboration between
CIEE and the UN Refugee Agency,
UNHCR, called upon student leaders
worldwide to propose solutions
for increasing access to higher education
and livelihood opportunities
for forcibly displaced youth.
“This challenge has prompted
us to think closely about the lack
of access to education globally and
on a local scale. Additionally, participating
in creating a solution to
combat this set of issues, we have
been charged with the invocation of
our institution’s mission statement,
challenging us to engage with the
world in efforts that cultivate leaders
who live ethically, think and
communicate precisely, but also act
courageously to make the world a
better place,” said Morning-Trice.
Participating in this challenge
provided valuable skills and networking
opportunities similar to
a global internship and allowed
the Bleu Dreamers to engage
with international experts and
policymakers.
Attending the CIEE Global Internship
Conference in London will
broaden their cultural horizons and
offer unique insights into addressing
global challenges. Educators,
industry leaders, and policymakers
have convened to explore best practices
and innovative approaches
in international internships. The
theme of this year’s conference is
“Collaborating to Shape Future Talent,”
and programming is focused
on the importance of partnerships
in preparing students for the future
workforce.
The Bleu Dreamers’ dedication
to driving positive change
and their commitment to Dillard
University’s mission of cultivating
ethical and courageous leaders
exemplify the spirit of innovation
and global citizenship within the
university community. “As we
work towards our goal of cultivating
leaders, it’s important that
we also expose them to opportunities
that allow them to actively
be a voice in solving global issues.
Their performance in this challenge
is a testament to the quality
of education they receive here at
Dillard University,” said Director
of The Center for Career and Education,
Dwanna Toney.
We celebrate their achievements
and look forward to their continued
impact on addressing global challenges
and making a difference in
the world.

As the 30th Essence Festival makes its
presence in the Crescent City to celebrate
the largest African American culture and
music event in the U.S., one of the big
questions asked – right after who will be
performing – is what to wear to the many
events taking place in and around the city.
Finding the perfect outfit that is “haute”,
yet cool enough to keep you looking fresh
is the goal for attending the daytime experiences
at the Ernest N. Morial Convention
Center. It’s no secret New Orleans heat is
relentless and there’s no escaping it. Stick
with light colors (white’s my fav), flowing
silhouettes and natural textiles that are
breathable, such as cotton and linen. Don’t
forget comfy shoes, sunglasses, and sunblock;
these are important necessities when
walking these streets of New Orleans to the
various daytime events.
As the sunsets and the night lights illuminates
the city, it’s time make a wardrobe
change and get ready to get turnt up! However,
don’t expect too much of a cool down
in the temperature. In fact, the humid and
sticky weather continues into the evening
as everyone makes their way to the Caesar
Superdome for the concerts. That doesn’t
mean you should sacrifice style. The theme
for evening events is to shimmer and shine,
from micro-mini to strapless and flowing or
silky romper. After all, alongside the music,
food, and culture, style and fashion are the
essence of Essence Fest.
New Orleans Pelicans Pick Yves Missi
in 1st Round of NBA Draft
Fleur De Lis
Data News Weekly
Contributor
The New Orleans Pelicans are
getting ready for the 2024-25 season.
It will be exciting as fans are
ready for the return on Superstar
Zion Williamson. He will be joined
by a supporting cast including 1st
round draft choice Yves Missi.
The 21st pick, Missi is a bouncy
center with Belgian-Cameroonian
origins who played his high school
ball at Prolific Prep in California.
Born in Belgium before moving
to Cameroon for his childhood,
Missi ultimately blossomed into a
five-star recruit and graded as ES-
PN’s 13th-best player in the 2023
class. He earned Big 12 All-Defensive
and All-Freshman honors in
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver with New Orleans Pelicans first-round draft pick
Yves Missi.
2024, finishing his oneand-done
campaign
with averages of 10.7
points, 5.6 rebounds
and 1.5 blocks in just
23.0 minutes per game
while shooting 61.4%
from the field and generating
4.1 free-throw
attempts per game.
Brian Johnson, a
season ticket holder
says, “I am confident
the Pels will have a
better season this year
if Zion stays healthy.
Last year early in
the season the team
showed they could
beat elite teams. With
the addition of Missi,
and we’ll see what the
roster looks like, I believe we
can be competitive.”
A dangerous rim-runner, Missi
ranked eighth in the nation with
76 dunk attempts this season. Deriving
32.2% of his offensive possessions
from rolling in pick-androll
plays marked the 17th-highest
frequency in the nation, displaying
a clear niche to translate to
the pros. Another 34.4% of Missi’s
possessions came via offensive
rebounding and cuts around the
basket, so he profiles strictly as a
play-finisher at this time.
Michael Smart, another fan of all
sports in New Orleans says, “We
have a good team that has young
players that can be developed and
veterans to provide leadership. I
think this year will be a good year
for the Pels if they can stay healthy.”
A “Weekend of Action” Mobilization Blitz with over
1,500 Events held across Crucial Battleground States
Marked the Surge in Momentum.
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson earned confirmation with a 53-47 vote, breaking the glass ceiling as America’s
first Black woman Vice President, Kamala Harris, presided over the process to confirm her.
Following a lackluster debate
performance by President Joe
Biden last week, the Biden-Harris
re-election campaign has sprung
into action, seemingly galvanized
by the persistent falsehoods of former
President Donald Trump, who
will be sentenced this month for the
34 felonies a jury convicted him of
in New York.
After the poorly moderated CNN
debate, the Democratic base invested
over $14 million in the campaign
as a result.
A “Weekend of Action” mobilization
blitz with over 1,500 events
held across crucial battleground
states marked the surge in momentum.
According to the Biden-Harris
campaign, the weekend marked the
most successful organizing effort of
the campaign cycle so far, with volunteer
signups tripling compared to
an average day.
Kicking off the weekend, Biden
rallied more than 2,000 voters in
North Carolina on Friday, delivering
a passionate speech that set the
tone for a series of events, including
door-knocking, phone banks,
postcard parties, picnics, and more.
High-profile figures such as Governors
Wes Moore and Tim Walz,
Former U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda
Solis, Senator Chris Coons, and
DNC Chair Jaime Harrison joined
forces to boost campaign activities
across the country.
Former Governor Jennifer Granholm,
canvassing in Southeast
Michigan alongside Congresswoman
Debbie Dingell, highlighted
Biden’s achievements, contrasting
them with Trump’s agenda. “Ninety
minutes does not wipe out three and
a half years,” Granholm said. “You
have more people under health
care than at any time in American
history, and what does the other
guy want to do? He wants to gut the
Affordable Care Act. Meanwhile,
Joe Biden is campaigning for the
soul of America. The contrast is so
clear.”
In Wisconsin, Maryland Governor
Wes Moore participated in
events focusing on Black voter
engagement, while in Nevada,
Vice President Kamala Harris rallied
supporters in East Las Vegas,
criticizing Trump’s stances on Roe
v. Wade, tax cuts for the wealthy,
and the 2024 election results. Harris’s
efforts led to a flurry of volunteer
activity, with over 2,000 doors
knocked and numerous events
launched across the state.
Georgia saw a variety of campaign
activities, from a happy hour
in Atlanta with U.S. Representative
Maxwell Frost to a viral video of
Biden at a Waffle House in Cobb
County. The enthusiasm extended
to rural areas, significantly increasing
volunteer signups.
“To protect our communities, we
have to double down and take action
to combat the climate crisis –
which is exactly what Joe Biden has
pledged to do in a second term,”
Frost stated. “President Biden’s investments
are working. With emissions
coming down, we’re proving
we don’t have to choose between a
strong economy and a healthy environment.
While Joe Biden is fighting
for us – Donald Trump is promising,
actually promising, to drag
us backwards and leave the world
worse for younger generations.”
