Side Trip:
When it’s the worst of times, I appreciate
how we see the best of
people.
The weather, destruction and high water
levels we all are dealing with now certainly
feel like some of those
“worst of times.” And
yet there are countless
stories of people helping
neighbors, helping
strangers, giving, donating
and volunteering.
Our family helped
friends sandbag
their East Okoboji
Lake home and were
amazed at the volunteers
who showed
up at the bagging site
MYRNA
WAGNER
— some with no connection to anyone in
trouble. They were just there as it was the
right thing to do.
Our family friend and lifelong newspaper
guy, Alan Mores, is a longtime summer resident
of Jones Beach, one of the hardest hit
areas in the Iowa Great Lakes.
He and his neighbors have placed 15,000
sandbags and are still dealing with standing
water long after the flooding has receded for
most people.
Alan has sent out regular text and e-mail
updates as few residents there were able to
remain in their homes.
His messages are news reports, little emotion
and mostly the facts — level of water,
damage to docks, number of pumps and
gallons moved per hour, and what the current
vulnerabilities and needs are.
He shared yesterday that some residents
have ventured out for materials and supplies,
heading south to nearby Spencer.
Even these folks who have lost so much
and are still living in the midst of the aftermath
have compassion and perspective.
Alan writes, “Our problems pale in comparison
to those of the residents of Spencer.”
There is light in the darkness. Don’t give
up hope.
