Forehands and First Serves
World Tennis Classic up next for the University of Okoboji
Summer swing means backhands
and drop shots next
weekend in Okoboji.
That’s because it’s once again
time for the annual University of
Okoboji World Tennis Classic.
The event offers competitive hard
court matches for all ages and abilities
and has been a staple at Okoboji’s
Speier Park for several years.
“I always look forward to seeing
returning players and their families,
I’m even starting to see a second
generation come through now
where I’ve watched Mom and Dad
play and now their son or daughter
is coming along and that’s really
neat,” said tournament director Brian
Richter. “And it’s always great to
see all the new people too. Last year
about a third of the entries were
new people, some local and some
from even California.”
Anyone interested in signing up
for this year’s event must register by
July 10 with the first event costing
$25 per person and a second event
priced at $20 per person.
And while no one will be asked
to step onto the court against Coco
Gauff or Novak Djokovic, there will
be plenty of competition for those
seeking it out.
Current college players from area
institutions such as Morningside
University, Buena Vista University,
Gustavus Adolphus College and
Augustana University are often
among the participants.
“We do have competitive players
and we also have recreational
players,” Richter said. “That’s what
makes it a great event is being able
to offer something for every level
and ability.”
Sign up or stop by and enjoy
the action during the next World
Tennis Classic at the University of
Okoboji. F
