Side Trip:
When it’s the worst of times, I appreciate
how we see the best of
people.
The weather, destruction and high water
levels we all are dealing with now certainly
feel like some of those
“worst of times.” And
yet there are countless
stories of people helping
neighbors, helping
strangers, giving, donating
and volunteering.
Our family helped
friends sandbag
their East Okoboji
Lake home and were
amazed at the volunteers
who showed
up at the bagging site
MYRNA
WAGNER
— some with no connection to anyone in
trouble. They were just there as it was the
right thing to do.
Our family friend and lifelong newspaper
guy, Alan Mores, is a longtime summer resident
of Jones Beach, one of the hardest hit
areas in the Iowa Great Lakes.
He and his neighbors have placed 15,000
sandbags and are still dealing with standing
water long after the flooding has receded for
most people.
Alan has sent out regular text and e-mail
updates as few residents there were able to
remain in their homes.
His messages are news reports, little emotion
and mostly the facts — level of water,
damage to docks, number of pumps and
gallons moved per hour, and what the current
vulnerabilities and needs are.
He shared yesterday that some residents
have ventured out for materials and supplies,
heading south to nearby Spencer.
Even these folks who have lost so much
and are still living in the midst of the aftermath
have compassion and perspective.
Alan writes, “Our problems pale in comparison
to those of the residents of Spencer.”
There is light in the darkness. Don’t give
up hope.
British detective duo on stage at OST
Play based on famous tale ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’
A
dark brown brick wall and
empty gold picture frames create
a bit of mood and mystery
from the opening curtain for the play
“Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock
Holmes Mystery” that takes to the
stage for the second week of Okoboji
Summer Theatre’s 66th season.
A cast of just six actors bring to
life a wide variety of characters in
this classic story starring the most
famous British detective, Sherlock
Holmes, played by one of the OST’s
most famous actors, Rob Doyen.
Another OST favorite guest actor,
Chad Fess, plays the role of the nearly
inseparable partner, Dr. Watson.
Set on the moors of Devonshire
surrounding the Baskerville estate
outside of London, the play is a
somewhat humorous adaptation by
playwright Ken Ludwig of Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle’s book “The Hound
of the Baskervilles.” Heirs to the
Baskerville family estate are being
murdered, and Holmes and Watson
are tasked with solving the mystery.
“There are layers upon layers and
nothing adds up” Holmes says to
Watson in the early moments of Act
II.
That is as it should be for a mystery
that has everyone wondering until
the final moments.
Though the theme of the play is
serious, there is comedy and humor
laced throughout, seen in the physicality
of the acting and the exaggerated
stereotypes of characters.
In addition to Holmes and Watson,
four actors play all the other characters,
relying primarily on costume
changes, spoken accents and physical
movements to convey the many
roles.
The mastermind behind all the intricate
details of the show is director
Stephen Brotebeck. Timing is critical
to the success of a mystery like this
and Brotebeck is mindful of every
detail. Lights, sounds, blocking and
props all change in rapid succession
enabling a small cast to carry out the
vast number of roles.
As an audience member you don’t
first realize you’re seeing the same actors
on repeat. Once the realization
hits it is impressive to watch for the
changes and nuances, all executed by
Stephens College students.
The small cast is also able to execute
many roles through the genius
of the script and design of the set. As
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson
think aloud and form theories, they
are able to introduce characters. A
small stage in the background of the
larger stage also allows these scenes
to come to life while the characters
are talking.
The genius of set designer Brandon
PT Davis works perfectly for the
telling of stories within stories. Paint
charge for his design is Katie Cohen.
Actor Quinten Loveland’s primary
character is Sir Henry, a hearty man
with a drawl who has recruited the
help of Holmes and Watson. He
also plays the town constable, and
switches seamlessly from his drawl
to an Irish brogue. Particularly
impressive is Loveland’s execution
when both of these characters are
on stage at the same time and he
is able to fill both parts simply by
holding up the hat and using both
of his voices.
Joseph Alan Murphy is equally
impressive in his ability to switch
roles. Primarily Jack Stapleton, he is
also Dr. Mortimer, John Barrymore
and more. He executes physical
disabilities remarkably well and
handles dozens of costume changes
in minimal time.
Arden Ogilvie and Nylah Strong
are the female cast members,
also filling many roles with accents,
unique mannerisms and costume
changes. Impressive that these actors
do not show the stress of speedy costume
changes.
The talent on stage is matched by
the talents making things happen
behind the scenes.
Makenzie Schutter handles the
challenge of costume design for the
show, with assistance from Sydney
Johnson. Props go hand-in-hand
with costumes in this production,
Getting there:
WHERE: Okoboji Summer Theatre,
2001 Highway 71, Okoboji
TICKETS: $24
RESERVATIONS: Call the box
UP NEXT: “Freaky Friday,” a musical,
playing July 9-14
handled by prop supervisor Fae
Riemann-Royer.
Ashley Russell is stage manager, assisted
by Paige “Blue” True.
Kayla Sliger is sound designer with
Savannah Bell serving as lighting
designer.
Dramatic music and dramatic
lighting are perfectly paired with
sound effects. Listen for the wind,
thunder, train whistle, typewriter,
growling dog, creaking door and
wind. Fog is particularly effective too,
both at the train station and when
the action moves into the moors and
heavy fog rolls in.
When the music is soft and romantic,
the lights are as well. When
the music shifts to the dramatic,
lights on the scrim shift from purple
and fuchsia to red and orange. Drab
nearly colorless greenish taupe light
is appropriate for the melancholy
moments. A final spotlight on the
two genius detectives is a dramatic
and fitting way to end.
Though there is much unknown
during the telling of the tale, all is
neatly wrapped up and explained
in the end, with a bit of philosophy
shared for theatregoers.
“That part of our souls that is dark
and troubling — the hound is in all
of us.” F
This is not a tribute show. This is a
Tommy Vee
Neil Diamond tribute concert on stage July 7
The good times have never
seemed so good at the Roof
Garden Ballroom in Arnolds
Park Amusement Park.
I Am, He Said: A Celebration of
the Music of Neil Diamond will take
the stage at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 7.
This show, which celebrates the
life and music of music legend Neil
Diamond, is back by popular demand.
“I Am, He Said performed last
year in The Roof Garden Ballroom.
Everyone who attended, asked if we
could bring them back, they were
that good,” said Chris Swanson, the
director of HAPI Marketing. “The
popularity of Neil Diamond music
is why we originally wanted to do
a Neil Diamond tribute. The Killer
Vees don’t consider this a tribute,
they consider it a celebration of an
amazing music icon.”
The full band features the talents of
Matt Vee along with his cousins, Jeff
and Tommy Vee, who are the sons of
the legendary Bobby Vee, who was
known for such hits as “The Night
Has a Thousand Eyes” and “Come
Back When You Grow Up.”
All the Vees join together with
other family and friends as The
Killer Vees to present this night of
music featuring the songs of Neil
Diamond. This is so much more
than a tribute show.
“This is not a tribute show,” says
Tommy Vee. “This is a celebration
of an amazing musical icon, one we
all love and respect. We have been
fans since we were in grade school
and first learning our respective
instruments and played many of
these tunes over the years in various
bands. We have recruited an incredible
group of singers and players
and have gone back to the original
records, it is all about the vocals and
Matt nails it. It’s a rockin’ show!”
Young or old — everyone who
loves Neil Diamond should make
sure to get their tickets now. F
Okoboji Summer Theatre
is offering a new opportunity for local
middle school and high school
students. They will be offering the
Boji Bantam Broadway Bootcamp
the week of July 8-13. The program
runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. every day
with a free showcase performance
scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, July
13.
The cost of the event is $375 for
the week, but there are a few scholarships
still available as of press time,
according to organizers of the event.
The recommended ages for this week
of classes is ages 12 and up.
All of the classes will be held at the
Boji Bantam Children’s Theatre on
the grounds of the Okoboji Summer
Theatre.
The students will get the opportunity
to work with a variety of professional
artists and staff.
“We are so excited to be bringing
this programming to Okoboji,” said
Madison Dodd, the Boji Bantam
director for the season. “We have a
wonderful lineup of guest artists and
professional staff that the students
will get to work with to sharpen their
skills in the performing arts.”
This musical theatre intensive will
include time spent working on singing,
dancing and acting. The students
will do a number of workshops and
will also get to spend time with
the rest of the company and
staff throughout the day including
mealtimes.
“They will get a taste of what
its like to be a member of the
company at Okoboji Summer
Theatre, which is pretty cool,”
Dodd said.
Each student will work on a
number of songs, monologues and
scenes with other students throughout
the week and will perform them
all at a showcase at the end of the
week.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, the
public is welcome to attend this free
program featuring the hard work of
local youth.
“At the beginning of the week each
student will do a mock audition and
we will assign each of them to do a
solo or duet, a monologue and short
scenes. The performance will be
about 30-40 minutes,” Dodd said.
The spotlight is on and the stage
is waiting for kids ready to report
for the Boji Bantam Broadway Bootcamp
next week. F
Hogs
HOT RODS
There’s going to be more than one type of
hog at Round Lake Vineyards & Winery.
In addition to classic cars there will also
be motorcycles and a whole roasted hog at
their Cruisin’ Hog Roast & Car Show at 5 p.m.
Friday, July 12.
The event came from idea to bring likeminded
people together to relive the days long
gone by.
“For many it’s about nostalgia. It doesn’t
matter if you were a kid in the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s,
or ’80s, the car that reminds you of a great time
in your life will probably be there. For the car
owners, they love to share their memories and
the time they’ve committed to that special car,”
said Scott Ellenbecker, one of the owners of
Round Lake Vineyards & Winery.
The cars are parked along the lake shore and
there are no entrance fees for the cars or the
people wanting to enjoy looking at them. The
event officially starts at 5 p.m., but cars can
start arriving before 4 p.m.
In addition to the classic cars there will also
be some other interesting vehicles to catch
your eye.
“We also see many newer cars and some
vintage models. Corvettes and Porsche, Aston
Martins and Model Ts. We even had a World
War II vintage truck a couple years ago,” Ellenbecker
said. “We try to keep cars in groups of
similar model and vintage, but many just want
a good spot by the lake or in the shade to visit
with other car enthusiasts.”
They decided to make it extra special by adding
something unique to the menu.
“We’ve been roasting a pig since the first
time we had this event. A hog roast just
seemed to fit as a fun food for a super casual
car event. The grill will also be turning out
burgers and brats. We also feature keg beer
specials and slushies along with the full bar,”
Ellenbecker said. “The restaurant and bar will
also be open if someone wants to see the cars
then head over to the main winery building
for a steak or drinks.”
The atmosphere will be enhanced by the
music of local favorite Dan Jensen throughout
the event.
This event is a longtime favorite that brings
in crowds of car enthusiasts and people just
looking to spend an interesting evening.
“We’ve been doing this for many years and
the event is up or down in number of cars
based on the year and weather. We’ve had 150
cars and we’ve had 75,” Ellenbecker said. “It
depends on the year. There are no pre-assigned
parking spot for cars or restrictions on who
can bring a car, so we don’t know what’ll happen
until it does. But it’s always been a good
turnout.”
Even if you don’t have a cool classic car, you
can still cruise on in to Round Lake Vineyards
to enjoy strolling along the lakeshore while
enjoying some good food and fun in a beautiful
spot.
“This event really pulls the whole property
together for a fun evening by the lake. I think
that’s what I like about this event the most.
There is a warm summer nights by the lake
vibe: sit by the koi pond and waterfall with
friends or wander around looking at nice cars
or just listen to the music and relax,” Ellenbecker
said. “No agenda and a beautiful evening
is sometimes all one needs for the perfect
family escape or date night.” F
A
couple years after a memorable performance
at the Pearson Lakes Art Center, it’s time for
an encore from Gary Puckett & The Union
Gap.
While their previous trip involved a trio of bands
and shorter sets, this time around the stage belongs
solely to them.
“That had a great show and this time around
we’ll get to hear more of them,” said Rachelle Fratzke,
performing arts director at the Pearson Lakes Art
Center.
That means the audience will get a full twohour
show this time around, hearing the hits
like “Young Girl,” “Woman Woman,” “Over You,”
“Home,” and many others that made Gary Puckett
& The Union Gap one of the most successful music
groups of the 1960s.
Audiences will get two chances to catch the show
with performances scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday
and Wednesday, July 9-10, in the Lauridsen
Performing Arts Theatre at the art center.
Tickets are $45 for art center members or $55 for
Gary Puckett returns to the Iowa
Great Lakes for two concerts
nonmembers.
It’s also a chance to see an original artist of the
’60s still performing at the top of his game.
“He’s one of the few still going from that era and
singing under his own name,” Fratzke said. “You
have so many bands that are still performing but
there aren’t any original members still playing.
Gary and his band are definitely world renowned
artists with a lot of great music.”
Don’t miss the chance to catch a classic with Gary
Puckett & The Union Gap in the Iowa Great Lakes.
Forehands and First Serves
World Tennis Classic up next for the University of Okoboji
Summer swing means backhands
and drop shots next
weekend in Okoboji.
That’s because it’s once again
time for the annual University of
Okoboji World Tennis Classic.
The event offers competitive hard
court matches for all ages and abilities
and has been a staple at Okoboji’s
Speier Park for several years.
“I always look forward to seeing
returning players and their families,
I’m even starting to see a second
generation come through now
where I’ve watched Mom and Dad
play and now their son or daughter
is coming along and that’s really
neat,” said tournament director Brian
Richter. “And it’s always great to
see all the new people too. Last year
about a third of the entries were
new people, some local and some
from even California.”
Anyone interested in signing up
for this year’s event must register by
July 10 with the first event costing
$25 per person and a second event
priced at $20 per person.
And while no one will be asked
to step onto the court against Coco
Gauff or Novak Djokovic, there will
be plenty of competition for those
seeking it out.
Current college players from area
institutions such as Morningside
University, Buena Vista University,
Gustavus Adolphus College and
Augustana University are often
among the participants.
“We do have competitive players
and we also have recreational
players,” Richter said. “That’s what
makes it a great event is being able
to offer something for every level
and ability.”
Sign up or stop by and enjoy
the action during the next World
Tennis Classic at the University of
If you are planning ahead for your weekend activities,
HERE’S WHERE WE THINK YOU SHOULD START.
THIS WEEKEND!
FLEA
MARKETS
Summer holidays
served up plenty of
fun in the Iowa Great
Lakes. And some
of that fun is
JULY
3-7
found in a trio
of flea markets
and antique
shows
that have
scheduled their
events around those
holidays for decades.
The Dickinson County
Fairgrounds, Treasure
Village and Vick’s Corner
all host markets
during the summer
holidays and are set for
another run around the
Fourth of July.
JULY 18-21
Hull Summerfest, Hull, IA 712-439-1513
LIVE AT THE LAKE
Preservation Plaza is turning
up the volume for the Fourth of July
weekend.
Starting with local favorite The Rolling
Stoners on Independence Day, there
will be free concerts on three consecutive
nights with a fourth show in the Roof
JULY
6-7
Garden to put a nice bow on the
holiday weekend. The Rolling Stoners
kicked things off at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, July 4.
The following night, 7:30 p.m. Friday,
July 5, will be the return of another familiar
act to the outdoor stage, The Trip.
Audience members may think they’re
going through a bit of déjà vu at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, July 6, when it’s time for the 90s
Rock Show to take the stage.
That’s because the lead singer does
double duty with The Trip — both groups
tend to travel together doing gigs across
the country.
I Am He Said: A Celebration of Neil
Diamond and is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday,
July 7 in the Roof Garden Ballroom.
