Grouse embarks on new crusade

WHEN SHAUGHN McNabb 

was working behind the bar 

at the Famous Grouse to earn 

a few dollars while a Lincoln 

University student, he told 

himself he would one day own 

the pub. 

Now a decade on, he is mein 

host of the establishment with 

business partner Mitch Drummond 

– the longtime Crusaders 

halfback and former All Black. 

“The hotel has always been 

special to me since uni days. I 

said 10 years ago I wanted that 

pub,” McNabb said. 

The opportunity for the two 

burgeoning hospitality entrepreneurs 

arose when the Lincoln 

Club decided to pull out of 

its lease on the pub through its 

company Famous Grouse 2009 

Ltd. 

It left the door open for new 

owners of the popular watering 

hole on Lincoln’s main street. 

“It’s a great place and we 

have plans to take it forward,” 

McNabb said. 

McNabb and Drummond 

have already made an impact 

with their easygoing style and 

willingness to get around the 

tables and engage with patrons. 

One quick change has been 

to abolish public holiday 

surcharges, a prickly subject 

with patrons under the previous 

management.

motorists 

caught

have been caught speeding in the 

district over the past year, latest 

data has revealed. 

In the 12 months from May 

2023 to April this year, 13,352 

drivers were caught speeding 

– 4777 more than for the same 

12-month period from May 2022 

to April 2023.

14.9% rates rise ‘a balance’ – mayor

a 14.9 per cent average rates 

rise strikes a balance between 

affordability and planning for 

the future. 

The majority of councillors 

are expected to vote in favour of 

the increase as part of adopting 

the 2024-34 Long-Term Plan at 

today’s meeting.

Said Broughton: “It has been a 

pretty difficult conversation with 

the community and for councillors 

about an increase that’s far 

higher than we’re used to. 

“While the cost of living and 

cost of rates has been something 

that has been raised, so has planning 

and preparing for the future 

and thinking about a growing 

district so it has been a balance 

of those two matters.” 

Forecasts show double-digit 

rates rises are set to continue 

until 2027, dropping as low as 

3.6 per cent by 2033. 

But Broughton admitted he 

did not expect it to get that low. 

“Every long-term plan I see 

those (lower) numbers in years 

seven, eight, nine, they never actually 

eventuate. They’re the true 

numbers based on the information 

we have right now, but that’s 

two election cycles away and 

there will be new information to 

hand before we get to years seven 

and eight.” 

Selwyn Times asked all councillors 

on Monday whether they 

would vote for the 14.9 increase 

today. Along with Broughton, 

Malcolm Lyall, Shane Epia, 

Sophie McInnes, Bob Mugford 

and Phil Dean said they would 

vote in favour of it. Elizabeth 

Mundt and Grant Miller said 

they would not support it, Debra 

Hasson was unsure, while Lydia 

Gliddon and Nicole Reid did not 

respond. 

Mundt and Miller both said 

the plan had too many “nice to 

haves” and not enough had been 

done to make savings, by either 

cutting projects or reducing 

operating expenditures. 

“You’re asking our ratepayers 

to take on an approximately 

45 per cent increase over three 

years,” said Miller, adding he 

supported spending on infrastructure 

where needed but not 

“gold plating” projects.

council has set a cap for rates 

rises at 16 per cent for the next 

three years. The cap was set at 6 

per cent when the last LTP was 

signed off in 2021. 

Compared to Christchurch 

City Council, which was able to 

cut the initial proposed rates increase 

from 13.24 per cent to 9.9 

per cent, Selwyn has not made 

the same reduction. 

Broughton said much of the 

savings were found before community 

consultation. 

“We’d already made quite a lot 

of savings ahead of going to out 

the community with our draft. 

“Through consultation, we 

heard that our community 

wanted to continue with a whole 

lot of things that are important 

to them.” 

A record number of people 

gave feedback to the plan with 

more than 1500 submissions, up 

from 660 in 2021. 

Due to how rates are calculated, 

depending on the value of a 

property, the rates increase may 

be larger than the average. For 

a $847,000 home with sewage 

the rates increase will see a 15.8 

per cent rise, while some rural 

properties could see rises higher 

than 20 per cent. 

Despite the LTP expected to 

be ratified today, the future of 

some of the council’s transport 

projects is still up in the air. 

Almost $60 million of projects 

remain uncertain as the council 

waits for NZ Transport Agency 

Waka Kotahi’s approval. 

In the next three years, nine 

major capital projects – each 

valued at $2 million or above, 

totalling $38.18 million in 

project costs – are banking on 

co-funding. There is also $20.56 

million in minor projects relying 

on co-funding. 

For most projects, NZTA cofunding 

equates to 51 per cent 

of the budget. If they are not 

funded the council can decide to 

abandon the project, cover the 

cost or reduce it. 

The council will find out the 

result of co-funding in coming 

months.

Cancellation of bus route now 

‘permanent’ despite lobbying 

NO MORE: ECan has refused to bow to public pressure and 

has permanently cancelled the No 87 bus route.

THE DECISION to can the No 

87 bus route will be permanent, 

despite resident outrage. 

The service ran for five years 

between Southbridge and Lincoln, 

and was a key link for people 

travelling to Christchurch. 

Environment Canterbury 

announced the axing of the 

service in May, claiming low 

passenger numbers were behind 

the decision, prompting Enviro 

Ellesmere to start a campaign to 

save the route. 

The group organised an 

emailing template for residents to 

send to ECan, the district council 

and Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg. 

But ECan public transport 

manager Stuart Gibbon said their 

decision to axe the service was 

final. 

“The outcome of the trial will 

not change. The cancellation is 

permanent and the last day of 

service was on Thursday, June 27 

as previously communicated.” 

Gibbon also responded to 

Enviro Ellesmere’s claims data 

used to record passenger numbers 

was inaccurate. 

“Our analysis has confirmed 

that a very small number of 

transactions were not accounted 

for. This review has had no 

material impact on the service 

performance relative to patronage 

targets with the daily average 

changing from 18.9 to 19.2 

passenger trips.” 

But Enviro Ellesmere will 

continue its campaign to restore 

the service. 

A petition was started last 

week to see how many residents 

wanted to keep the route. So far, 

they’ve received more than 300 

signatures. 

Enviro Ellesmere’s Jade Arnold 

said the group is hopeful there 

will be a positive change. 

“What we’re demonstrating 

is that people want to be able to 

use it, and so then it’s on ECan to 

provide a service for people to be 

able to use.” 

They are wanting to host 

community meetings over the 

school holidays to get more public 

feedback.

“We’re here to look after our 

patrons,” McNabb said. 

McNabb has strong links with 

the township, from his university 

days. He still plays for the Lincoln 

Rugby Club. 

“I enjoy the people who come 

in, and making it a really good 

experience for them. I know 

most of the locals so it is pretty 

happy for me to be back in a different 

capacity (as part owner). 

Pubs are for fun,” he said. 

McNabb and Drummond are 

not new to the hotel game. They 

have owned the Bush Inn Tavern 

in Upper Riccarton for three 

years and McNabb has hospitality 

interests in Hanmer and the 

Paddle and Pint in Wanaka. 

But it is not surprising the 

vocation McNabb is in. 

“Dad (Alan McNabb) has been 

a publican for 30 years and I’m 

not 30 yet,” the 29-year-old said. 

Drummond, 30, who has 

had a lengthy career with the 

Crusaders (143 appearances, 

21 tries, and youngest player to 

become a centurion) is equally 

upbeat about taking over the 

Grouse. 

Patrons talking rugby with 

him, even with the tough season 

the Crusaders have just had, is 

part and parcel of being a publican. 

“It’s cool. It’s what I have done 

(rugby) for a long time so people 

always want to talk to me about 

that. It’s great to talk to them face 

to face. They’ve got questions, 

even though obviously it has 

been a tough year,” said Drummond. 

Crusader memorabilia at the 

Grouse? 

“It’d be rude not to,” quipped 

Drummond.

illustrates how Lincoln has been 

completely let down by our 

elected “representatives”. 

Selwyn District Council ran 

a sneaky and undemocratic 

process to get Lincoln South 

(PC69) approved, and fast-track 

legislation now means there 

is no recourse for community 

views. At a time when the town 

faces enormous changes our 

ward councillors are silent and 

absent. 

Meanwhile, the (Lincoln) 

town centre project remains 

in limbo, motorists are being 

injured or terrified daily on 

our dangerous rural roads 

and there is no word on what

service the gigantic, barren and 

unwanted urban sprawl planned

Despite the best efforts

whom do not reside in Lincoln, 

have chosen not to listen or 

advocate for the township.

Ellesmere Rd was of particular 

concern, with road users taking 

to the Lincoln Community Facebook 

page to complain. 

“The roads are absolutely terrible 

and dangerous with all these 

potholes. A disgrace,” one person 

wrote.

Mason said the council has 

been working to ensure timely 

repairs and maintain road 

safety. 

“The potholes on Ellesmere 

Rd were repaired and the 

section of Ellesmere Rd between 

Leadleys Rd and Tosswill Rd is 

scheduled for comprehensive 

reconstruction in the upcoming 

season.” 

In the 2022/23 financial 

year, the council repaired 8096 

potholes district-wide.

community. Their main focus is 

to provide practical support in

nutritious food. 

Frank Morgan, Church of

Morgan has held the volunteer 

position as the vestry membership 

representative at the church for 

the past 15 years. In this role, he

‘A good buzz’: From family farm 

to large-scale solar ventures

installed solar panels on 

their house, they never 

thought 10 years later 

they would be building 

a solar farm which 

could power about 

11,000 homes. Reporter 

Daniel Alvey finds out 

how they did it 

LEESTON-BASED family 

business Kea Energy will start 

building one of Selwyn’s biggest 

solar farms early next year 

on Buckleys Rd, next to the 

Brookside substation. 

It’s a far cry from Campbell 

and Naomi McMath’s first foray 

into solar a decade ago – installing 

solar panels on their home 

and one of the dairy sheds at the 

family farm. 

“We looked at solar panels for 

ourselves as more of an interest 

thing to see what it was like,” 

McMath said. 

The Buckleys Rd venture will 

combine the benefits of agriculture 

and solar power: 140,000 

tracking solar panels will be 

spread across 111 ha of farmland, 

which will still be used for animal 

grazing. 

The aim is to have it operational 

within two years. 

McMath said there are benefits 

to farming as well, because the 

solar panels provide shade. 

“There was a study done 

showing that because the lambs 

weren’t under as much stress 

they were eating more grass so 

they would fatten up a bit better, 

but there’s also some crops that 

grow better under solar panels 

because they don’t need as much 

sun.” 

McMath grew up in Hong 

Kong. He lived there from 

six months to 17 years old, 

while his parents worked in aviation 

engineering, returning to 

New Zealand with them in 1996. 

“My parents ended up buying 

a farm down here (near) Rakaia, 

so they made their Leeston their 

base,” he said. 

McMath obtained an NZCE 

(New Zealand certificate in 

engineering) and went on to 

became a qualified electrician. 

In 2001, he started at Orion. He 

stayed there until 2009, working 

in a range of roles, upskilling to a 

systems engineer. 

While he was at Orion, 

McMath installed four hydro 

turbines on his parents’ farm on 

Fereday Island, fed by a branch 

of the Rakaia River. 

The company’s latest solar 

venture will produce about 175 

times more power when completed. 

After leaving Orion, McMath 

moved from Christchurch to

Leeston with his wife Naomi to 

start Kea, working full-time on 

the turbines. He began selling 

the power from the turbines on 

the electricity spot market. 

“The market at the time was 

quite high and there was enough 

of an income from there for me 

to leave Orion,” McMath said. 

Naomi helps run the company’s 

day-to-day operations. 

She also works two days a week 

as a receptionist at the Leeston 

Medical Centre. 

Due to a drop in the price of 

electricity that could be sold on 

the spot market, McMath had to 

attract retail customers to buy 

their power from Kea Energy. 

Over time, this provided steady 

income to the company. 

From installing solar panels 

at home and on the family farm, 

the focus on solar grew. McMath 

started installing small solar 

installations on farms around 

Canterbury in a practice known 

as agrivoltaics, where the land 

under the panels could still be 

used for farmland. 

McMath said when they build 

solar farms the company hires 

contractors to assist. 

For the installations on farms, 

the infrastructure is owned 

by Kea Energy, while the land 

owner gets a cheap power rate 

through a power purchase agreement. 

About five years ago the Fereday 

Island farm was sold, meaning 

McMath had to find more 

generation to fill the gap left by 

the hydro turbines. 

The solution was to build what 

at the time was New Zealand’s 

largest solar farm in the Wairau 

Valley in Marlborough in 2021.

“It was a really good feeling, a 

good buzz,” McMath said. 

Aside from building solar 

farms to sell electricity, Kea Energy 

helped get solar farms operational 

on four Pacific islands 

– Vanuatu, Atiu, Mauke, and 

Aitutaki – by putting the piles 

in the ground and mounting the 

hardware for the panels. 

Local contractors then installed 

the remaining hardware 

and panels.

The solar panels replaced diesel 

generators on the islands, leading 

to another unique issue. 

“Once you reduce that diesel, 

the islands didn’t have as much 

shipping going to them because 

they weren’t bringing in the 

diesel much.” 

He said the islands benefited 

from increased tourism, as it was 

quieter without the generators 

running all the time. 

The Buckleys Rd farm project 

has resulted in a 50/50 partnership 

between Kea Energy – under 

the name KeaX – and United 

Kingdom-based company Ethical 

Power, which is assisting with 

the investment and technical 

expertise required to deliver the 

large-scale farm. 

“It is probably a bit big for us 

by ourselves,” McMath said. 

Ethical Power New Zealand 

country manager Nick Keeler said 

he was pleased with the council’s 

decision to give the project the 

green light on April 22. 

“Buckleys Rd will undoubtedly 

be one of the stellar solar 

projects in New Zealand. We’re 

delighted with the council’s 

positive decision and keen to 

see the project go live as soon as 

possible.” 

Resource consent did not come 

easily, with the project facing opposition 

from nearby residents, 

including claims the solar farm 

would damage the soil.

and due concern the application 

was not publicly notified. 

In his decision to grant the 

second resource consent, hearing 

commissioner Matt Bonis said 

the project met all requirements 

to get resource consent. 

Said Bonis: “I have concluded 

that the actual and potential effects 

on the environment associated 

with the proposal, subject to 

conditions being met, will be no 

more than minor.” 

McMath did not want to 

comment on the opposition, 

which involved them removing 

company branding from their 

family car due to it being 

targeted with eggs. 

He believes the future of solar 

power is strong in New Zealand 

and has the potential to attract 

companies because of the green 

image. 

“Solar is just another clog 

in the machine of renewable 

energy like wind, hydro, and 

geothermal. It’s certainly not a 

stand-alone option.”

Zealand becoming much 

more of a renewable energy 

hub attracting high energy 

customers,” said McMath, 

adding high energy customers

to get ambulance crews a key 

piece of equipment. 

An emergency lifting 

cushion was presented to Hato 

Hone St John Rolleston group 

operations manager Brendan 

McInnes last week. 

The ELK lifting cushion can 

hold up to 450kg and assists 

in moving people who may be 

fragile, heavier, or have low 

mobility into a sitting position. 

This enables ambulance crews 

to transport them to a bed or 

wheelchair more easily. 

The emergency device will 

be housed at the Rolleston 

ambulance base but will be 

available to assist paramedics 

and people who need it across 

the district. 

The donation of the 

equipment was led by the 

Selwyn Lions Club following 

its Designs and Desserts 

fundraiser which raised $6000. 

The money was divided 

equally between three 

recipients: Hato Hone St John, 

PROactive Drive, a driver 

training service and Upstream 

NZ, an organisation focusing 

on youth mental wellbeing. 

Financial support to help 

pay for the cushion was 

also provided by Ellesmere, 

Malvern and Rolleston Lions

HARD WORK: Lincoln High School was inspired by the five stages of grief 

for their performance at the Showquest regionals. 

Showquest success 

LINCOLN HIGH School performers had 

a taste of success at the recent Showquest 

regionals. 

Fourteen students participated in the 

event, and most notably received the award 

for best choreography. 

They also placed third overall, and 

got highly commended for styling and 

soundtrack and special recognition for their 

school spirit. 

For Showquest, high schools and primary 

schools from Canterbury were challenged 

to create an original stage-based mini 

Broadway musical following the elements 

of art, music, dance, drama, culture and 

technology. 

The competition is student-run, and 

performances are centred around an issue 

most important to them. 

Lincoln’s piece was inspired by the five 

stages of grief.

Sabine has 20 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, working in both 

Germany and New Zealand. Her medical background includes intensive care 

unit (ICU), dialysis, district nursing, and care of people with neurological and 

brain injuries. 

After 20 years in the medical system, Sabine realised that she wanted to keep 

caring for people but in a different way and setting. She wanted to be able to 

spend more time with people than the system allowed. So a crucial feature of 

how she has designed her business is that the appointments are around half 

an hour. This means there is a good amount of time for discussion and for more 

complicated ear care.

Disposing of hot ashes safely 

A warm fire in the fireplace is one of the best 

things about winter, but without care it can 

quickly become a hazard. One of the easiest 

ways fires start is not disposing properly of 

hot ashes. 

Navigating sunstrike during the winter months 

Sunstrike is a blinding glare that can be incredibly 

dangerous for motorists during winter months in 

Aotearoa. It is important to plan ahead; stay alert; 

slow down; and drop back. 

It can happen at any time of the day but is most 

likely during the morning or afternoon, when the 

sun’s rays can hit your windscreen at a low angle, 

making it difficult, or even impossible, to see. One 

way to help combat this and improve visibility is 

keeping the inside and outside of your windscreen 

clean, as excess dust or grime can increase the 

effects of sunstrike. 

Keep a clean waffle-weave microfibre cloth handy 

to wipe the inside of your windscreen. Sun visors 

also help reduce glare. 

keep polarised sunglasses in your car to wear to 

minimise the amount of sun in your eyes. 

When you can’t see at intersections due to 

sunstrike, look outside your windows and proceed 

extremely slowly until the sunstrike clears. If you 

are struggling to see or don’t feel comfortable 

driving in the conditions, pull over safely and wait a 

few minutes to see if the conditions improve or the 

sun moves into a different position. 

Pay attention to who else is on the road, including 

cyclists and pedestrians, who may also experience 

sunstrike and not see vehicles approaching. 

Increasing your following distance gives you more 

time to react, and reducing speed can help ensure 

everyone using the road gets home safely. 

Ashes can stay hot long after a fire has gone 

out and they can and do start fires in household 

rubbish bins. Hot ashes have also started fires 

in rubbish trucks and transfer stations. 

Always remember — bucket, bag it and bin it. 

• Using a small metal shovel, scoop ash from 

your fireplace into a metal bucket with a lid. 

It’s really important that you only use a metal 

bucket or container and not something that 

could easily catch fire from any residual heat 

left in the ashes such as plastic or cardboard. 

• Take the bucket outside, away from any 

buildings, and douse with water. 

• Leave to cool for at least five days. Once the 

ash has been safely cooled you can empty 

the cold ash into a rubbish bag and place it 

into your rubbish bin. Please do not place 

ash into your recycling or organics bin.

window washer fluid levels are full. If possible,

coaching group for allowing a 

number of key players to have a 

hit out for their clubs prior to the 

team naming. 

THe likes of Fletcher Newell for 

Lincoln Uni, Tamaiti Williams 

for Burnside and Sevu Reece for 

Sumner, as well as many others 

across the country all managed to 

get some minutes in. 

Player welfare is now monitored 

more than ever, especially in the 

area of head injury assessments, 

including compulsory standdowns 

which has been a real step 

forward. 

It has always been a fine line 

between getting players field time 

(head injuries aside) and what 

the specialists agree on. The bane 

of club coaches has always been 

the power the academies and 

high performance teams have on 

controlling their players’ minutes. 

The over-cautious approach 

at times when a player has come 

back from either a light muscle 

injury or a tournament where they 

are required to rest for weeks after 

is frustrating. 

They are obviously training 

longer than club teams and 

in some cases having to travel 

distances from tournaments as 

well, but many times the players 

themselves are fit, keen to play, 

and want to get on the field. 

Look at the NRL competition 

where players can be involved 

in one of the toughest games of 

the year in State of Origin on a 

Wednesday and then front for 

their club that weekend. 

Look at Blues captain Patrick 

Tuipulotu. What a show of 

leadership in the Super Rugby 

final, coming back from a knee 

injury and with a ‘follow me’ 

attitude on the field.

the players just know when 

they are going to be right to play. 

If he was in pain he didn’t show it. 

Many times there have been 

players wanting to stay on the 

field past their allotted minutes 

and contribute to their team, 

but have been stopped by overcautious 

physios and strength and 

conditioning coaches. 

Has all this over-care brought 

the benefit of reducing the number 

of muscle strains? 

This year especially, the number 

of hamstrings, groin strains and 

other soft tissue injuries seem 

higher than ever. 

A well-respected strength and 

conditioning coach told me that 

trying to duplicate things such 

as speed loading and sprinting at 

training is difficult as players need 

to be closely monitored to ensure 

they are hitting the same speeds 

they do in the game. 

It is hard for them to push to 

those efforts when not in the heat 

of battle. 

With everything monitored, 

from running minutes, speed 

tracking, impacts and over-all 

loading, one aspect that seems to 

be missing is asking the players 

themselves. 

If they feel up to it and there is 

no obvious reason except their 

“minutes are to high” then get 

them on the grass. The only time 

it shouldn’t be left to the players is 

in the case of head injuries – that’s 

a non-negotiable.

Staying safe in rural flooding 


Not wanting to be a pessimist, but... heavy rains, 

rising water levels and out-and-out flooding can 

have a huge impact on those living rurally. Assuming 

you’ve already got a formal management and 

emergency plan for your animals, here’s some things 

to consider for your humans. 

Floodwater 

Never try to walk, swim, drive through – or play 

in! – floodwater. It can be contaminated with sewage, 

farm run-off, faecal matter from animals, household 

chemicals, petrol, oil, and other hazardous 

substances. It can also be electrically charged from 

underground or downed powerlines. If you do come 

into contact with it, thoroughly clean your hands, 

clothes and any property touched. 

Better safe than sorry – boil water for drinking 

and preparing food, until you’re certain it’s not 

contaminated. Follow any ongoing boil water notice 

instructions from the Council. 

Driving 

Most flood fatalities are vehicle related. It’s hard 

to tell how deep the water is, and as little as 30cm of 

water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle, 

including SUVs. If your vehicle stalls, abandon it 

immediately and climb to higher ground. Many 

deaths have resulted from attempts to move stalled 

vehicles. 

The clean-up 

Assume that the water has distributed germs 

and bugs. When cleaning up, wear a mask, gloves, 

goggles, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Cover 

any open cuts or grazes and wash your hands 

thoroughly after each clean-up session. 

Indoors: throw away all food and drinking water 

that’s come in contact with floodwater, including 

things stored in containers. You just can’t tell whether 

the containers were damaged or seals compromised. 

Outdoors: use a shovel to remove surface 

contamination. Put it at the edge of your section, 

ensuring it doesn’t block drainage channels. Natural 

processes such as sunlight, drying and wind will 

make your outside areas safer over the short 

to medium-term. Leave garden surfaces and 

lawns exposed to the air and sunshine to dry 

out naturally. Make drainage holes with a fork to 

aerate. 

Disinfect outdoor areas of heavy contamination 

with garden lime. Hard surfaces, such as driveways, 

can be cleaned and disinfected with 1:10 

household chlorine bleach to cold water. Leave 

the disinfectant on for 30 minutes, then rinse with 

clean water.

Recycling plastic – important 


It’s plastic-free July, a concept that 

began in Australia in 2011, advocating for 

the end of single-use plastics. The monthlong 

campaign now inspires 100+ million 

participants in 190 countries and the 

website is an excellent source of resources, 

for home, work, school, events, business, 

community and local government: www.

While reducing the use of plastic is 

important, if it already exists, it’s best to 

re-use it. But no one says that’s easy. 

You probably know of the awardwinning 

company “Future Post”, founded by a kiwi 

farmer of over 20 years. It produces 100% 

recycled plastic fenceposts, designed as an 

alternative to classic wooden fenceposts, 

which rot and crack. Wooden ones are also 

treated with chromated copper arsenate 

(CCA), which leaches into our soils and 

waters, is restricted in many countries, and 

is not healthy for the animals who chew 

the posts. 

By contrast, the recycled plastic posts 

are non-conductive, approved for organic 

use, don’t leach CCA, and stock can’t 

chew them. They can be worked with 

in the same way as wood, with all the 

normal tools and equipment. And while 

the initial cost is higher, their 50+ year life 

expectancy makes up for it. 

So the rural community was confused 

when Future Post was targeted in April 

by a Sunday-Star Times year-long 

investigation and major article, with 

this heading: “The celebrated recycling 

company that’s dumping plastic in a 

landfill”. The allegations boiled down to 

Future Post being paid to receive plastic 

waste, some of which it seemed to be 

photographed dumping at least once a 

month.

Future Post’s response will sound 

depressingly familiar to any waste 

management professional, or indeed 

to op shop staff. Amongst the material 

they receive are items either not a type 

that they can process, or contaminated 

to such a degree that they can’t process 

it. The plant doesn’t have sorting or 

cleaning facilities, and so relies on those 

who provide the recycling to have sorted 

and supplied it suitably. 

The story seems to have been dropped, 

and Future Post goes from strength to 

strength, recently releasing its new 100% 

recycled plastic rails. 

But the message remains, for all of us. 

Recycling can only work if the people 

providing the materials do it right.

Heavyweight LDV lacking refinement 

WE START THIS week’s new 

vehicle road test with a question. 

Is there any sort of market here 

for a huge Chinese made luxury, 

all electric seven-seat people 

mover costing $119,000? 

Chinese automotive giant LDV 

reckon there is, because that’s 

exactly what they’ve launched 

here in the form of the MIFA 9. 

If nothing else, this imposing, 

futuristic, quirky looking thing 

is hard to miss. However, it is a 

vehicle destined to be a rarity on 

our roads, because of the cost 

and being an unknown. 

Many will be curious to know 

what the name MIFA 9 stands 

for? Well not much that makes 

any sense: Maximum, Intelligent, 

Friendly, Artistic and the ‘9’ 

stands for Premium. 

The vehicle looks classy 

enough with adaptive LED 

headlamps up front and a fullwidth 

light bar at the rear. 

From every angle, this is a 

big vehicle at 2-metres wide 

and 5.3m long, and making a 

long story longer is the MIFA 

9’s 3.2m wheelbase. While we 

are continuing to focus on how 

this newest LDV measures up, 

there is a minimum of 1.5m of 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

headroom from the base of any 

of the three rows of seats to the 

roof. Few people movers sold 

here would better that number. 

There’s also more than 900mm 

of legroom for each row, except 

the third that gets an even more 

generous 978mm. 

All the luxury stops are pulled 

out for this model, and they need 

to be given this is among the 

most expensive Chinese-made 

vehicles sold here. 

There are people pampering 

features everywhere. 

There’s mighty full-length 

electric panoramic sunroof, and 

it’s a clever one. For example if 

anyone in the vehicle receives 

a phone call and the sunroof 

happens to be open, all the 

windows and the sunroof 

automatically close. This shuts 

out any irritating background 

noises that may spoil your 

important phone conversation. 

How thoughtful is that! 

New Zealand gets a threemodel 

MIFA 9 range, each with 

drive-away pricing that leads 

off with the entry level Elite at 

$79,990, while the mid-spec 

Luxury retails for $99,990. Easily 

the most expensive model, and 

by a sizeable margin, is the 

$119,990 Premium provided for 

this road test. Interestingly we 

pay much less here than they do 

in Australia for this model. There 

it sells for a wildly optimistic 

NZ$143,000. The base Elite 

version is a cleaner, roomier, and 

more economical alternative to 

a Kia Carnival diesel. Making 

the deal that much sweeter is 

a 5-year 100,000km warranty, 

and with 8-years and up to 

200,000km on the battery. 

This luxury heavyweight of 

the giant people mover brigade 

possesses a remarkably good 

turn of pace for such a high, 

wide, long and hefty vehicle at 

nearly 2.6 tonnes. 

Providing the performance 

fireworks is an 180kW electric 

motor driving the front wheels 

with three drive modes, Sport, 

Normal and Eco available. That 

motor manages a decent 350Nm 

of torque, enough to propel it 

from 0-100km/h in a sharpish 

8.9 seconds. 

All models are fitted with a 

large 90kWh lump of a battery 

pack, giving the car a real world 

EV driving range of 430km, 

putting it in the right ballpark for 

a large electrified people mover. 

Smooth strong acceleration 

had the test vehicle moving 

with almost indecent haste from 

traffic light standing starts, much 

to the surprise of the drivers it

5; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 8; Value for 

money: 6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP rating. 

Overall points out of 10: 6.5 

left in its wake. Over indulge too 

many times in these moments 

of driving exhilaration and the 

EV range suffers. Just how much 

is down to whether you adopt 

a more circumspect style of 

driving. 

A single-speed automatic 

keeps things moving along 

nicely in both town and highway 

driving. 

The cabin is seriously large. 

This means heaps of space to pile 

in a whole bunch of features that 

make this a road-going luxury 

cruise liner. No surprises then 

to find two large captain’s chairs 

in the second row, with cooling 

and heating, massaging function 

and one-touch fully-electric 

reclining. 

This is a bold breakout vehicle 

for LDV, who are intent on 

showing the automotive world 

they can design and build a top 

class luxury vehicle and as a 

first attempt, it shows plenty of 

promise. 

However, these luxuries 

aren’t enough to ignore its flaws 

that you don’t expect in $120K 

vehicle. 

These include inconsistent 

build quality, variable attention 

to detail and too many hard and 

lower grade plastic trims and 

surfaces in the cabin. 

The test vehicle doesn’t miss a 

safety trick, and creates a few of 

its own with a fatigue reminder 

system, using a camera on the 

A-pillar. This will alert the driver 

to things like smoking, fatigue, 

viewing their phone, or not 

looking at the road. 

There are seven airbags, and 

loads of safety systems at work 

on the front line, including 

autonomous emergency braking, 

adaptive cruise control, forward 

collision assist, and lane keep 

assist. 

Nothing that groundbreaking 

with the suspension with an 

independent set up front and 

rear with a five-bar link for the 

latter. 

As expected, the ride is skewed 

towards comfort and it delivers 

that well enough over favourable 

road surfaces. It’s less adept on 

demanding roads where noise is 

more noticeable. 

Handling at moderate speeds 

over undulating terrain, and 

during cornering was better than 

expected, but it’s a vehicle that 

doesn’t enjoy being hurried along 

over these sorts of roads. 

Knowing and understanding 

the MIFA 9’s road holding 

limitations and driving to these 

is one of the keys to enjoying this 

unique people mover.

Neutral territory 

While bold interior trends come and 

go, neutral colour schemes are always in. 

Done right, muted shades and low-key 

accessories can look stunning and help 

make your interiors look relaxing, bright 

and airy – and who doesn’t want that? 

Not only that, but a neutral colour 

scheme can work in every room of your 

home – think sleek all-white bathrooms, 

cosy tan and taupe living rooms and 

sophisticated grey-scale bedrooms. 

However, although the look is laidback 

- and perfect for every room - it doesn’t 

mean it is without its pitfalls; banishing 

colours from your rooms needs to 

be approached with care and some 

forethought to ensure you get things right 

and avoid it looking bland or boring. 

The key to nailing the neutral look is to 

incorporate the use of various textures and 

shades into your interiors. 

Layering textures will give your home a 

luxurious feel and prevent it looking flat. 

You can add plenty of interesting detail 

with textural elements, such as natural 

clay pots, marble worktops, linen curtains, 

woven baskets, bamboo bowls, fluffy rugs 

and fringing on cushions; while mirrors 

can help bring an added flair to neutral 

rooms and give the illusion of more space. 

Another tip to preventing your rooms 

from looking sparse of unwelcoming, is 

using different wood finishes to warm 

things up – an all-white room with a rich, 

deep stained wooden floor or beamed 

ceiling looks incredible, while still being 

neutral and fresh. 

In a similar way, different types and 

finishes of metal – for example brushed 

steel and gleaming gilt – can help bring the 

most out of a neutral palette and pack in 

eye-catching highlights. 

In terms of shades, if you want to stick 

to one or two colours – for example beige 

and white – mix it up with different hues, 

like, camel, tan, sand and biscuit alongside 

ivory, vanilla, eggshell and antique white. 

Keep things balanced by using both warm 

and cool tones, such as silvery, cool greys 

with warmer shades of brown. 

Although conventional design rules 

suggest avoiding mixing patterns, when it 

comes to neutrals pretty much anything 

goes as the fuss-free colour scheme 

prevents it looking busy and clashing; 

meaning you can pair a floral armchair 

with a geometric print rug or some striped 

curtains. You can even get in touch with 

your wild-side and bring in some animalprints, 

in muted shades – just try to include 

a combination of small and large prints to 

keep things looking chic. 

All out neutrals not your thing? Well, 

they can provide a great backdrop for 

splashes of bold colour – maybe an eyecatching 

piece of artwork for the bedroom, 

a brightly coloured rug in the bathroom 

or some funky scatter cushions to liven up 

the living room, all of which will really pop 

against a pared-down theme. 

You can also add some green, leafy 

houseplants, funky cactuses, or a bright 

floral arrangement to experiment with a bit 

of colour without going over the top – the 

bonus to using flowers as a feature in your 

home is that you can change it up with the 

seasons without spending a fortune and 

give plants a new lease of life with a new 

pot or planter. 

If a hint of colour isn’t quite enough 

for you, then you may want to introduce 

a feature wall; splash on some paint in a 

daring colour such as emerald green, ruby 

red or cobalt blue, or go for a striking 

patterned wallpaper to bring some drama 

to your interiors. 

With a bit of planning, neutrals can be 

anything but nondescript.
