Feminist posse takes to 

clowning 

around

THE FEMINIST Clown 

Posse is about to be unleashed 

on Lyttelton. But those with 

coulrophobia need not worry as 

these clowns aren’t scary. 

The group’s sold-out show 

next Wednesday promises to 

bring of fits of giggles to even 

those with a phobia of clowns. 

Renowned Australian 

entertainer Tessa Waters, who 

now lives in Lyttelton, coined 

the group’s name to be 

“positively provocative”. 

“Clowns are seen as sort 

of innocent and putting 

it with feminism, which 

is quite a strong idea, will 

hopefully either make people 

interested in what we’re 

doing or realise it’s not for 

them,” she said. 

Waters’ clown troupe 

is part of the line-up for 

LytFest, starting on Friday. 

Festivities will start with 

the free opening party at 

Albion Square from 5-7pm.

projects from infrastructure 

development to cultural events 

are big winners from the city 

council’s final long term plan. 

Almost a fifth of oral submissions 

on the 10-year plan came 

from Banks Peninsula which

Tyrone Fields believes helped get 

more funding. 

His amendment to keep 

$600,000 for Diamond Harbour 

village improvements in the 

final plan was approved after the 

funding was removed during the 

draft plan process. 

“I believe it was staff looking 

for savings, and we’ve now had 

constructive conversations with 

staff to make sure it was included.” 

The funding from 2026 to 2028 

had been included in previous 

annual plans and provides for 

upgrades to street infrastructure 

and public amenities in Diamond 

Harbour’s central area. 

The Governors Bay Jetty Trust 

has received $174,000 across 

three years to help pay off its 

loan to the city council for the 

restoration.

first plunge with the Scarborough 

Dippers as they raise funds for 

the community, and she’s keen to 

go back for more. 

The Heathcote city councillor 

went along on Monday, and 

described the experience as exhilarating. 

“(It was) actually 

much more fun 

than I expected, 

with such an 

amazing group 

of people dipping 

and a great cause 

to fundraise for.”

reminded me to breath through it 

and were really encouraging.” 

As winter is in full swing, the 

water is expected to be around 

9-11 degrees.

Pop-up 

dog park 

falls flat 


A POP-UP dog park for 

Diamond Harbour has been 

canned by the farmer who 

leases the paddock. 

Residents were planning on 

using the Whero Ave paddock 

on Sunday before Tom Magill 

warned of the threat posed to 

his livestock. 

The farmer has dealt with 

serious outbreaks of sheep measles 

in his herd before, which he 

says is caused by dogs pooing 

on grazing land. Sheep can get 

the disease by eating dog poo, 

which in turn makes them 

inedible. 

“It can storm through your 

animals, causing cysts on the 

meat,” Magill said. 

Residents agreed to cancel 

the pop-up dog park after being 

contacted by Magill over the 

weekend. 

“They should have asked 

permission. Having dogs running 

willy nilly all over that paddock is 

not the greatest for me,” he said. 

There have long been calls for 

an official dog park in Diamond 

Harbour, but Magill believes 

dog owners are already “spoiled 

for choice” for walking options 

in the area.

Hard work pays off for jetty trust

of feral goats in Banks Peninsula, 

the city council is fronting 

$200,000 for feral pig eradication 

over the next two years. 

“They need money to go from 

suppressing to eradicating. It’s 

a really critical juncture,” said 

Fields. 

The Banks Peninsula Conservation 

Trust will be responsible 

for dispersing the funds to eradication 

programmes and groups. 

“There will be something in

The potential of the 0.297 ha 

block has been discussed since 

the city council bought it in 

2000. 

City council staff have created 

a consultation plan, starting with 

identifying key stakeholders. 

The Akaroa Butchery and 

Deli, bought by new owners in 

December, is the only business 

located in the section at 67 Rue 

Lavaud. The butchery, which 

rents from the city council, is 

expected to stay open regardless 

of future use of the site. 

Nearby businesses, Ōnuku 

Rūnanga, residents, Akaroa Area 

School, and community groups 

have already been identified as 

likely key stakeholders. 

City council staff presented 

the plan at the Te Pātaka o 

Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula 

Community Board meeting last 

week, and received support from 

the members. 

After early consultation, it 

will likely take several months 

for staff to determine the 

community’s preferred options 

ahead of further consultation.

‘Loud, naughty and disruptive’

The festival promises 16 days 

of theatre, dance and exhibitions 

for audiences of all ages at venues 

throughout Lyttelton. 

Artists like Lyttelton 

multi-instrumentalist Carmel 

Courtney and Queenstownbased 

juggler Paul Klaass are part 

of the line-up. 

Under Waters’ tutelage, 22 

women and non-binary people 

have been learning the art of 

clowning through a feminist 

lens at the Lyttelton Recreation 

Centre. 

“The clown scene internationally 

is quite male dominated, so I 

was very interested in empowering 

other voices.” 

She has more than a decade of 

experience in creating acclaimed 

comedy, theatre and short films 

which have played to sell-out 

crowds in Australia and the 

United Kingdom. 

Waters has found traditional 

clown training to be restrictive, 

with women typically limited to 

feminine and sidekick roles. 

“There’s the idea that women 

always had to be quite small 

and pretty and quirky. I’m quite

wannabe clowns from Banks 

Peninsula and Christchurch, who 

have been training together since 

February. 

Their LytFest show will feature 

various skits, gags and crowd 

interaction. 

“It’s all very based in that 

connection with the audience and 

finding gold in failures.” 

Waters moved to Lyttelton from 

Wellington in 2022 and immersed 

herself in the arts scene. 

“It’s full of really interesting 

artists and the community spirit 

here is just beautiful.” 

Born in rural Queensland, the 

41-year-old always had a taste for 

performance art and travelled 

the world to study under French 

master clown Philippe Gaulier. 

“I’ve become a teacher myself 

and it’s a real gift being able to 

help people flourish and step out 

of their boundaries.” 

Waters’ posse has found 

inspiration in all-female clown 

troupes from Canterbury’s 

history. 

“It’s really incredible to have 

brought this to Lyttelton and 

to be sort of stepping on the 

shoulders of those who came 

before.”

Lucky Lady finds her forever home 

ADOPTING AN 11-year-old 

greyhound wasn’t always on the 

cards for Anna Farge. 

But she says her new dog, from 

the city council’s animal shelter, 

completed the missing piece of 

the puzzle. 

Farge’s family of six – including 

her Jack Russell, Jake – grew 

by one recently as they welcomed 

‘Lady’. 

“I came across Lady on the 

council’s Facebook page, and 

her age was never an issue. As 

soon as I saw her face I knew 

there was something very special 

about her,” Farge said. 

“I chatted to the shelter over 

the phone then went in with the 

kids and Jake to meet her – she 

was just what our family was 

missing. 

“She came up to us with a 

wagging tail, socialising with 

Jake straight away and even 

giving my 16-month-old kisses 

in his pram. We took her home 

the next day.” 

Greyhounds are nothing 

new for Farge, after losing her 

13-year-old greyhound last year 

and spending plenty of time 

around her mum’s pack. 

However, finding homes for retired 

racing greyhounds around 

the country is difficult, with 

more dogs than homes. 

Dogs are now being sent to 

the United States, rather than 

waiting to be adopted in New 

Zealand. 

As of early June, 44 greyhounds 

have made the trip to 

new homes in the US, RNZ 

reported. 

Darrin Williams from Greyhound 

Racing New Zealand told 

RNZ the adoption market there 

is different from New Zealand. 

“They’re exactly the opposite to 

us. We’ve got plenty of dogs and 

not enough applications. They’ve 

got piles of applications and 

no dogs because there’s hardly 

any racing over in America. 

So, before they go, many of the 

dogs have already begun to be 

matched with the right home.” 

Greyhound Racing New 

Zealand looked into the 

programme after seeing 

Australia do it. 

Williams told RNZ the US programme 

will allow the waitlist of 

dogs to be cleared faster. 

There are 350 dogs currently 

on the waitlist for adoption, 

he said.
