Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s
excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny
on what we ate, who served us, who we bumped into and, you
know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Cape May Grilled Cheese Co., in the Washington Commons
mall, aka the joint where you’ll also find the Acme, along with a
plethora of stores and eateries.
The vibe: What’s orange and purple and completely and totally
cheesy? This place! You can’t miss the brightly colored logo and, once
inside, you can’t miss the aroma of ooey-gooey goodness.
The owner: Mike McCloskey opened Cape May Grilled Cheese
Co. in the summer of 2022 and is a man who clearly doesn’t believe
in standing around. He made his name as an entrepreneur and public
servant in Montgomery County, PA and is now running as a state representative
in November, under the ‘I Like Mike’ slogan. We Like Mike,
too, even though we really only know him through his fabulous cheesy
concoctions.
The food: One of us had the Hail Caesar Grilled Cheese because one
of us clearly thinks that having some salad content mixed in with dollops
of cheese and bread is somehow healthy. (Delusional, we might
add, but tasty nonetheless.) Completing our order was the Nashville
Hot Chicken, which features a sweet-n-spicy sauce, plus pickles and,
of course, fried chicken.
Next time: The Jersey Jam Burger has been enjoyed in the past
by folks in the Exit Zero office upstairs, and will be again, along with
a Lobster Grilled Cheese and a Buffalo Chicken Grilled Cheese. And,
okay, we will definitely, most likely, for sure order the Lobster Fries, just
before a three-mile walk to torch those calories. It sounds amazing...
fries topped with lobster bisque, shredded lobster, cheddar, parmesan
and Old Bay.
The parking: Downside: You have to pay for parking at the Commons.
Upside: But NOT if you are in and out in less than 30 minutes.
Mind you, it’s not a bad idea to pay for a few hours, enjoy a couple
cheesy treats here and then set off to explore the kaleidoscopic range
of shopping in the Commons and also the main mall and side streets.
Cape May’s shopping game is better than it’s ever been. Enjoy!

there are all sorts of seating nooks from which to
enjoy great drinks and a great vibe.
Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw
bar, surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus
outside tables for some great people-watching!
Enjoy a fun and creative twist on an age-old favorite.
From wild combinations, to classic ingredients, there’s
plenty you’ll want to try when you visit.
Serving great classic comfort food in a beautiful
location with a historic vibe. Chef Sherry Sheldon
created a menu that offers pub-style fare while
embracing the farm-to-table concept.
The Kulkowitz family’s latest culinary adventure.
They’re bringing a new vibe to the Cape May dining
scene with menu featuring local food with global
flavors.
As you’d expect of an Irish pub, this is the place to get
Guinness and good pub grub. The burgers and meat

I
have something to crow about. As coauthor
of the newly published The Shorebirds
of North America (Princeton), I am delighted
to introduce my coauthor Kevin Karlson
of Cape May Court House, whose images
gleaned after 30 years of field study make the
book a visual sensation. The cover shot of an
American Avocet will blow the visual centers of
your mind back to a brain stem.
The balance of the book’s 200 (or so)
images span the spectrum of shorebird biology.
“As many photos as you like,” said Princeton
editor Robert Kirk, an unheard of invitation in
this age of budget cuts and parsimonious editorial
boards. The authors intended the book to
be a visual treat and the publishers agreed. The
writing? It’s not half bad and the focus spans
shorebird biology beak to tail (or maybe tale).
Cape May residents will find lots of ink spilled
in the direction of our famed spring shorebird
concentrations. We students of birds living in
the 21st century live in shorebird-rich times that
would make Witmer Stone envious.
Best of all, it’s time for round two. What
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
goes up must come down. Now that the summer
solstice is past, Arctic-breeding shorebirds
are engaged in their southbound migration.
Cape May’s marshes and beaches are critical
stopover points for two dozen species and you
will have front-row seating to the planet’s great
reapportionment of life: Fall Migration. First
on the scene are failed breeders, then successful
adults, then juveniles, flying without adult
supervision. This staggered timetable allows
migrating shorebirds to reduce competition for
food at prime feeding locations. It’s all explained
in the book.
Still, many birders quail at the thought of
differentiating the smaller shorebirds or “peep.”
Here’s a hint. The sandpipers chasing waves on
the beach are Sanderling. The birds that walk,
stop and pick are plovers. Different family. The
brown-backed ones with the dark band on the
chest are Semi-palmated Plovers. The larger
Black-bellied Plovers are found on beaches and
open marsh. Some may still be showing blotches
of black on their underparts but in winter plumage
the birds show uniformly pale underparts.
If flushed, the birds emit a loud, plaintive peeoo-eee.
One of the most haunting calls in nature.
When feeding, these “King Plovers” stand semierect,
like a feathered T-Rex. Anyone who has
ever watched a Black-bellied Plover feed annot
question the evolutionary link between birds
and dinosaurs. Ask any mole crab.
So, there you have it, an Arctic’s worth of
breeding shorebirds, delivered to our door from
now until October with fresh deliveries arriving
on the heels of every cold front.

Did you ever feel like you were moving
backward to go forward? There are
some TV shows like that. Sometimes
we see something shocking at the
end of episode three that we think
will resolve in E4, but we don’t see more until
much later in the series. One such show is the
popular NBC drama series This Is Us, which
you can now stream on Hulu, Netflix or the
NBC APP. The show aired for six seasons lasting
from 2016-22.
This drama follows the stories of three
siblings all born on the same day, which also
happened to be their father’s birthday. They
are Kevin Pearson (Justin Hartley), his sister
Kate (Chrissy Metz), and their step brother
Randall (Sterling K. Brown). Their late father,
Jack (Milo Ventimiglia), was a construction
foreman and their mother, Rebecca (Mandy
Moore), was a full-time mom and aspiring
singer. Throughout this show you see flashbacks
from the point of view of the three
Pearson children and in present day scenes.
This show does a fantastic job of making sure

reflect those in present day.
How I Met Your Mother was a CBS sitcom
that lasted nine seasons, from 2005-14. You
can now stream every season on Hulu. This
show takes place in 2030, where the future
version of Josh Radnor’s character Ted Mosby
(voiced by the late great Bob Saget) narrates
to his kids about how he… well, met their
mother. Every episode tells a different element
of the story between friends living in New
York: Marshall (Jason Segal), a lawyer who
marries his long-time girlfriend Lily (Alyson
Hannigan), a Kindergarten teacher; Canadian
news reporter Robin (Colbie Smulders), who
Ted falls for; and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris),
a conman whose profession is not revealed
for a long time. Ted is an architect whose
goal throughout the show is to find a suitable
partner. Throughout the show, he faces happiness
and betrayal and leans on his friends for
advice, in turn doing the same for them.
With these shows, a subplot or character
twist in one season may not resurface
until several seasons later. This is a brilliant
technique and very relatable. In life, we don’t
always see the full picture right away, it may
take time and patience. Maybe that’s why
shows like these appeal to us – because we
know anticipation, by definition, can be a
nailbiter. It makes us a little nervous and
keeps us on the edge of our seats. Have a

quirk of my college’s alumni reunion
schedule means that, every few
years, I share a dance floor with Bill
Nye the Science Guy. In a standing
joke, the DJ will ask, “Is a ‘Disco
Inferno’ an endothermic or exothermic reaction?”
Typically, the silliness escalates from
there, with debates like “Imagine ‘The Roof is
on Fire’, but there’s snow on it,” or “Can you
actually ‘Set Fire to the Rain?’” After a while,
the question of whether sweating is exothermic
becomes the main concern, and the crowd
exits the dance area and turns to what’s really
important — the ice cream.
Making ice cream requires an endothermic
reaction — the ingredients of the emulsion
yield their heat to the salt and ice mixture
in the outer container. Ice cream has roots
in ancient Mesopotamia, where, as early as
4000 BCE, wealthy people would add honey
to ice. In China during the seventh century,
a cold, but not frozen, treat was “clear wind
rice,” made of milk, rice, and camphor. In
the 11th century, Arab chefs who served a

chilled sugary drink called sharbat discovered
that ice mixed with salt created a heat-drawing
slurry. Keeping a barrier between your
ingredients and this slurry allowed the creation
of frozen treats. The Mughal emperors
of India used this technique on condensed
milk to make kulfi in the 16th century, at about
the same time that Europe was developing
sherbet. Bernardo Buontalenti of Florence
is often credited with creating modern ice
cream in 1565. The technology made its way

to America, where 18th-century fans favored
savory ice creams like truffle and artichoke.
When the ingredients became affordable for
common people, common sense kicked in and
the sweet flavors we love today became popular.
Most people preferred fruit flavors until
vanilla became widely available. In the 1830s,
a Philadelphia confectioner named Augustus
Jackson kicked off a century of American ice
cream innovation when he made ice cream
without eggs, creating a more “scoopable”
treat than the French style. Later Americans
would create the ice cream soda, cone, sundae,
milkshake and banana split.
Explore America’s love affair with ice
cream at “We All Scream for Ice Cream: A
History of Summer’s Favorite Treat,” the free
exhibit at the Carroll Gallery. There will be a
Sundae Social celebrating National Ice Cream
Day on Sunday, July 21 from 2-5. The gallery,
open from 10-3, is located at the Emlen
Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. The
exhibit runs through November 3. For more

We are hosting a family barbecue in a couple
weeks, and I am frantic that the police will
end up coming once the drinking begins. I have
five brothers and a sister. We are divided when
it comes to politics and vocal with our opinions.
I want this to be a memorable gathering
but not in that way. Our mother is very frail
and this could be our last summer with her. In
the past, we’ve had some raucous Thanksgiving
dinners. I specifically remember a turkey
leg being flung through the air. Do you have
any suggestions? – Worried

or keep the selection to a minimum. You
certainly want to hire a bartender or put a

Farm and buy an array of honeys. Give them
out as a prize throughout the barbecue for best
dressed, most congenial, and most likely to
leave with assistance.

My husband and I separated in May and I
have started dating. I like to go to Sea Salt and
Harry’s because of the view and I feel comfortable
there. But the two times I went, I saw my
husband lurking. I didn’t dare tell my date. I
texted asking him to leave me alone, but he
said it was a public place. This kind of behavior
is why we separated. He stayed until my date
and I left and I could tell he watched to see if I
went home with the man. It’s too early for me
to get physically involved with anyone, but
what do I do about this? – Stalked

anyone new into such a volatile situation and,

— and start working through this separation,
which obviously is headed for divorce.
