OE replacement shock absorbers ensure satisfied workshop customers
BILSTEIN B4 makes
the difference tangible
ADVERTISEMENTFEATURE
Forewarned is forearmed – when it comes
to shock absorbers, this rule is difficult
for drivers to put into practice. This is
because shock absorbers wear out almost
imperceptibly with increasing mileage.
Handling becomes more imprecise and the
braking distance longer. It is therefore all the
more important that the workshop regularly
checks the safety-relevant shock absorbers
– for the safety of the drivers and possible
additional business for the workshop.
If the shock absorbers need to be
replaced, it is important to opt for a
reliable quality product. The BILSTEIN B4 OE
replacement range corresponds exactly to
original equipment in terms of technology
and quality. After the shock absorbers
have been replaced, perfect road grip and
precise handling are restored. The result is
maximum safety and a driving experience
as if the car just came from the assembly
line. A difference that also the driver feels
immediately and can experience over tens
of thousands of miles. The overall package
of the BILSTEIN B4 product range therefore
ensures satisfied workshop customers who
will gladly come again.
With over 2,300 applications, the BILSTEIN
B4 product range covers more than 90
percent of all European vehicle models.
So there is a suitable B4 model for almost
every car on the market as a monotube and
twin-tube gas pressure shock absorber in
the specification that corresponds exactly to
the standard equipment. BILSTEIN is also a
one-stop shop for the necessary accessories
such as top mounts or bump stops and even
springs. When replacing shock absorbers,
workshops should always keep an eye on the
surrounding components. It is also important
to replace the shock absorbers always in
pairs on both sides of the vehicle at the
same time. This is the only way to achieve the
desired vehicle handling.
OEM competence for the aftermarket
Another advantage: the BILSTEIN B4
OE replacement shock absorbers are
manufactured on the same production
lines as the OE products. BILSTEIN supplies
many (premium) vehicle manufacturers
with the highest quality shock absorber
and suspension systems as standard and
therefore knows exactly what the OEMs
require. If the workshop decides to use
BILSTEIN products for replacement, they
can rely on getting first-class components
with excellent quality, while customers can
be sure that the driving experience of their
vehicle is the same as ex-works.
The shock absorber expert not only
supplies OE products for series production,
but also develops innovative OE suspension
technologies together with the vehicle
manufacturers. One example is the
DampMatic developed jointly by BILSTEIN
and Mercedes-Benz. Even without external
control, the mechanical system ensures
that the shock absorber is tighter or softer
depending on amplitude of vibration.
BILSTEIN holds the patent for its
DampMatic technology. This means that
no other manufacturer can offer OE
replacement shock absorbers, which are
identical to the OE component. However,
because the amplitude-dependent control
is integrated in the damper and works
without cables, there is a risk that the
workshop may overlook it. But if they opt
for a BILSTEIN B4 OE replacement shock
absorber, the DampMatic technology for
the particular Mercedes-Benz model is
automatically equipped – just like in series
production and in OE quality.
Air spring modules
with a unique feature
For vehicles with integrated air suspension
modules, another look at the B4 product
range will help. BILSTEIN is one of the few
aftermarket suppliers to offer brandnew
spare parts that are cheaper than
OE replacement parts and that surpass
remanufactured parts in terms of quality.
In the latter case, used shock absorbers
of uncertain mileage are installed and not
infrequently, the electronic control valves
are shut down instead of replaced. This
turns an active system into a passive one.
If the compressor in an air suspension
system is defective, BILSTEIN can also
help; replacements can be found in the B1
product range.
NEWS
Industry warned over
POOR QUALITY BRAKE CALIPERS
following independent study
29 defects
found in new
caliper brands
entering the
aftermarket
The automotive industry is being
urged to question the quality and
safety of calipers entering the
aftermarket, following an independent
study by Brake Engineering.
The braking specialist commissioned
an independent company to evaluate the
quality and subsequent performance of
calipers being sold into the independent
automotive aftermarket.
Three new brands of calipers were
tested and all failed to meet standards
and critical tolerances set by original
equipment manufacturers (OEMs), with
all three found to have used lower-grade
material.
In total, 29 structural and mechanical
defects affecting the performance of
calipers were detected.
While aesthetically these calipers look
‘fine’, under closer testing all units were
shown to have ‘porosities’ (holes) and
oxides in the material and all had partly
inhomogeneous microstructures.
This could result in weakening of the
unit and could potentially compromise the
braking performance when braking under
normal driving conditions.
The test looked at six areas of the
calipers including: Machined radius finger
(bridge), caster radius finger (bridge),
caster radius finger (pot), machined radius
(chamfer), radius at step of piston bore
and, radius at bottom of piston bore.
The tests focused on: Material
Chemical Composition, examining failure
to conform with OE standards normal
lifecycle operation, severely weakening
casting; structure and mechanical
properties, where porosities can cause
higher vibrations, increased noise level
and lack of pedal consistency leading to
catastrophic brake failure; and, rubber
and seal quality, where inefficiencies could
lead to cracks and component failure.
Calipers, as part of a vehicle’s braking
system, are safety critical products and
therefore any products that fail to meet
the original specification of the product
could have severe and potential hazardous
consequences, warns Brake Engineering.
Mark Hallam, Brake Engineering
marketing manager, said: “The results
of the independent test are alarming
for the aftermarket, especially following
the trade’s successful MOT campaign
to maintain safety standards. Calipers
entering the market may appear fit for
purpose. However, their performance has
been found to be severely questionable
with structures potentially leading to
catastrophic failure.”
NEWS
GS Yuasa advises regular battery
checks to beat the summer heat
GS Yuasa, the world’s leading battery manufacturer, is highlighting the importance
of regular battery checks, no matter the season.
Given the increased spike in failures
typically seen over the colder
months, most assume it’s cold
weather that kills batteries. However,
the Japanese battery manufacturer is
encouraging workshops to consider the
impact of the typically warmer summer
months; high under bonnet temperatures
created by the engine, if the battery
is located there; the increase in selfdischarge
these conditions bring; and how
this can impact a battery’s service life.
Understanding and managing the effects
of high temperatures on all the vehicle
batteries that come through your workshop
is crucial for maintaining their performance
and longevity, and ultimately providing
enhanced customer service.
Why focus on batteries during
summer?
It might seem counterintuitive to some, but
checking a vehicle’s battery is important
at all times of year, not just winter.
High temperatures accelerate battery
degradation, affecting its capacity and
lifespan. In fact, a 10°C rise in battery
temperature doubles the self-discharge
rate. Combined with a heightened average
under-bonnet temperature, the rate of
negative plate material break-up and
electrolyte evaporation increases but
doesn’t become a problem until winter
when vehicles require significantly more
starting power as the ambient temperature
falls. This is why most consider battery
failure synonymous with winter.
If the battery is left in a state of deep
discharge for an extended period, this can
also lead to internal damage and reduced
service life.
Preventative measures for battery care
It is vital to check vehicle batteries,
including through the summer months.
Some simple preventative measures that
can mitigate the effects of heat on a
vehicle’s battery include:
● Regularly check that the battery
terminals are clean and free from
corrosion, and that the battery is securely
mounted to prevent vibrations.
● If the vehicle is not going be used for
an extended period, the battery should be
disconnected from the electrical system,
removed, and stored in a cool, dry place.
● Using tools like GS Yuasa’s GYT050 or
GYT250 battery testers to regularly assess
the voltage and state of health of battery.
Always Check The Battery
While batteries are often out of sight,
they should never be out of mind. High
temperatures can significantly impact
vehicle battery performance, but with
proactive maintenance and regular checks,
you can ensure that your customers enjoy
uninterrupted summer driving.
GS Yuasa’s ‘Always Check The Battery’
scheme encourages garages to significantly
improve customer service, drive customer
loyalty and increase their revenue by
testing the battery of every vehicle they
service or repair. Research shows one in
three vehicle batteries requires attention
– whether recharge or replacement. By
checking every battery, a workshop seeing
50 vehicles a month could see a potential
revenue increase of as much as £10,000!
As part of the scheme, garages can
get their hands on a low-cost, complete
battery testing kit, including a GS Yuasa
GYT050 battery tester, which has been
developed to provide an accurate
assessment of the voltage and general
battery state of health. If you want to
get involved, simply speak to your local
participating GS or Yuasa distributor.
BM Catalysts calls for unified
industry effort to reduce
emissions on Clean Air Day
BM Catalysts, Europe’s leading manufacturer of aftermarket hot end
emissions products, calls on the automotive aftermarket to unite in
the fight against harmful emissions on Clean Air Day.
Highlighting its commitment
to air quality, BM Catalysts is
emphasising the importance of
high-quality emissions control devices and
the adoption of the latest technologies
designed to reduce vehicle emissions.
BM Catalysts has recently expanded
its product range with the introduction
of Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPFs) and
the enhancement of its Selective Catalyst
Reduction (SCR) range.
The GPF range currently includes six
part numbers covering over 2.3 million
vehicles, while the SCR range now offers
12 references, covering 172 different
vehicle fitments.
GPFs are designed to reduce particulate
emissions from gasoline direct injection
(GDI) engines, ensuring compliance
with particulate number (PN) emissions
standards under real driving conditions.
As the automotive industry shifts
towards more fuel-efficient GDI engines,
GPFs play a crucial role in filtering out
particulate matter and reducing overall
emissions.
Mark Blinston, BM Catalysts’
Commercial Director, said: “Our product
development team is constantly assessing
the market to ensure customers have
access to the latest emissions control
technologies. It’s crucial that we’re
working together towards global initiatives
to ensure a cleaner future.”
SCR technology on the other hand, is
essential for reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx)
emissions in diesel engines and works with
diesel exhaust fluids like AdBlue to achieve
NOx reduction of up to 90%.
The increasing prevalence of SCRs
in Euro 6 vehicles highlights the need
for the aftermarket to support these
technologies.
Blinston added: “It’s imperative that
the automotive aftermarket comes
together and plays its part to ensure
that the emissions control devices being
supplied and fitted are legal. BM Catalysts
is working with distributors and workshops
to ensure the industry is better informed
over new technologies and type approval
legislation, and the important role they
can play in its enforcement.
We’ve invested considerable resource
into developing our e-learning platform,
BM Garage Pro, for example to help
support this.”
VLS closes Case 201 after
Aztec Oils take swift action
VLS has closed investigation
VLS010201 after the company
involved took corrective action.
Harald Oosting, VLS Chairman.
In December 2023, VLS received a complaint about Aztec Oils
Emprotec UHPD 10W40, a Heavy Duty Engine Oil (HDDO). The
Complainant alleged that Renault does not support the RLD-4
as a specification, and as such, the product cannot meet it. The
performance claim was indicated in a list of recommendations
on the website and in the Technical Data Sheet relating to the
product.
Following an investigation, VLS upheld the complaint as Renault
does not issue the RLD-4 specification for service fill, and it is not
mandated for use in any of their current vehicles.
VLS contacted the Named Party, Aztec Oils, who moved
quickly to withdraw the claim against RLD-4. They retained the
claim against RLD-3 and amended the product’s description
and Technical Data Sheet accordingly. VLS was content that the
product had been brought back into compliance and closed the
investigation subject to the standard six-month review.
Harald Oosting, VLS Chairman, said, “We would like to thank
Aztec Oils for taking swift action in this case to ensure their
marketing claims, product descriptions, and Technical Data
Sheets were correct. As the lubricants sector navigates immense
change in response to OEM design changes and the need to meet
increasing emissions legislation, it is more important than ever
that we have a robust, anonymous process that holds lubricant
producers or marketers to account and protects end users.
Workshops must be able to have confidence that the products
they select are suitable for use in the application and can deliver
what they claim. Our objective is always to bring products into
compliance, and we thank Aztec Oils for taking action to protect
end users.”
You can keep up to date with VLS investigations at their website:
125 years of
FORVIA HELLA
From a lamp manufacturer in Lippstadt to a global
Technological strength as a common thread: from the
acetylene lamp “System Hella” as the first pioneering
innovation to the digital headlamp SSL | HD
FORVIA HELLA is celebrating its 125th anniversary today. The
company was founded in the Westphalian town of Lippstadt
(Germany) as a specialised manufacturer of lamps, lanterns and
ball horns for carriages, bicycles and the first automobiles. Today,
FORVIA HELLA is a global automotive supplier with around 37,500
employees at over 125 locations worldwide, which generated sales
of €8 billion for the first time last year.
“125 years of FORVIA HELLA is something we can be very proud of
together. We are very grateful to all current and former employees
for allowing us to celebrate this milestone in our company’s history.
They have all played a key role in supporting, shaping and developing
the company,” says Bernard Schäferbarthold, CEO of FORVIA
HELLA. “ At the same time, the anniversary is an obligation for the
future and motivation for us to remain at the forefront of mobility in
the coming years and to shape it from a leading position.”
1899: The foundation and start of the
rise to an industrial company
It is 11 June 1899 when the entrepreneur
Sally Windmüller registers the “Westfälische
Metall-Industrie Aktien-Gesellschaft (WMI)”
in the business register of the Lippstadt
district court. It is barely more than ten
years since Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz
undertook their first test drives with a
motorised carriage and motor car. Although
WMI’s roots go back a few years further, the
company’s official history begins on this day
in June – exactly 125 years ago today.
“Two things have always characterised
FORVIA HELLA,” says CEO Bernard
Schäferbarthold. “Firstly, our innovative
strength is the common thread that links
the WMI of the past with the company of
today. Secondly, we are constantly adapting
to changes in our industry environment.
This has always made us strong, and only
in this way have we been able to become
what we are today: a leading supplier in
automotive lighting technology and vehicle
electronics.”
From the acetylene lamp “System Hella”
as the first outstanding innovation to the
digital headlamp SSL | HD
In 1908, just nine years after WMI was
officially founded, the first outstanding
product innovation is launched on the
market. The acetylene lamp ‘System Hella’
is included in the sales catalogue – the
brand name that is also included in the
official company name some eighty years
later. The acetylene lamp developed by WMI
was not only far superior to the candle or
paraffin lanterns in use at the time in terms
of light intensity and range. Above all, it
represents the beginning of a development
that started with lamps and lanterns and
has reached the latest milestones in the
SSL | HD digital spotlight system and the
FlatLight | µMX, for example.
Entering the electronics business
FORVIA HELLA grew up with lighting
technology, but the company has also been
active in the electronics business for almost
sixty years. FORVIA HELLA’s entry into the
electronics area was obviously with lighting
electronics, when production of a fully
electric flasher unit started at the plant in
Hamm (Germany) in 1965. FORVIA HELLA is
one of the very first automotive suppliers
to venture into the electronics age. The
product range from the very beginning also
included electrical switches as well as plugs
and sockets for trailers. Today, FORVIA
HELLA generates sales of more than €3
billion in the electronics business and is a
leader in many products for autonomous
driving and electromobility.
Since 2022: company of the FORVIA
Group, the seventh largest supplier of
automotive technology worldwide
The course for the future was set on
31 January 2022. On 14 August 2021,
FORVIA (formerly: Faurecia) announced
the acquisition of a majority stake in
FORVIA HELLA, the transaction will be
finalised a good six months later. As a
legally independent company, FORVIA
HELLA becomes part of the FORVIA Group,
the world’s seventh largest supplier of
automotive technologies with more than
150,000 employees across the globe.
CEO Bernard Schäferbarthold: “Thanks
to the cooperation within the FORVIA
Group, we are significantly larger, more
broadly positioned and exposed to fewer
risks. We can improve our processes
because we learn from each other and act
stronger together in the market. This gives
us even more opportunities for the future
as FORVIA HELLA. With FORVIA as a new
majority shareholder and strong partner at
our side, we have therefore opened a new
chapter in our long-standing, successful
company history.”
Garage Hive
insight helps
fuel growth at
EAC Telford
EAC Telford, a renowned independent garage in Shropshire, has opened the shutters at its
brand-new flagship centre following an investment of more than £100,000. Award-winning
garage management system, Garage Hive played a key role in the journey towards expansion
according to garage owner, Mark Kettle.
The newly built commercial vehicle
workshop covers 7,500 square feet
and is staffed by eight technicians
and two front of house service advisors.
Upstairs, a new spacious office area
serves as the headquarters for EAC
Telford. From here, Mark, along with his
wife Jane and their general manager,
oversee all operations with an impressive
three-screen Garage Hive setup,
positioned to overlook the office, enabling
them to monitor and make decisions
effectively.
“It was always a dream of mine to own a
three or four garage business,” said Mark.
“I genuinely don’t think I’d have been able
to push the boundaries and realise that
dream without Garage Hive.”
Mark’s decision to first embrace
Garage Hive in 2019 was met with initial
scepticism. Having experienced promises
of revolutionary software solutions in the
past, Mark was understandably cautious.
However, his reservations were quickly
dispelled as Garage Hive proved to
be more than just another system – it
became an indispensable tool, driving
efficiency and growth.
“There’s nothing else out there like
Garage Hive,” said Mark. “It gives us a
real-time overview of everything. We
track activity, analyse performance,
and implement improvements. Only by
monitoring and acting on this data have
we managed to maximise efficiency, boost
sales and improve customer retention.”
With access to insightful garage
management reports and streamlined
workflows, EAC Telford experienced
a surge in productivity. Demand for
commercial contracts was on the rise,
prompting Mark to seize the opportunity
to expand further into the commercial
vehicle sector, culminating in the recent
opening of a third site.
“EAC Telford’s new commercial
workshop marks a significant business
milestone, showcasing Mark and Jane’s
ambition, dedication, and keen eye for
market opportunities,” said Ray. “Their
endorsement of Garage Hive is not just
a testament to its capabilities but also a
reflection of its tangible impact on the
automotive industry. As workshops strive
to adapt to evolving customer demands
and market trends, Garage Hive is paving
the way for sustainable growth.”
distinguished lineup of industry experts,
each providing valuable insights into the
challenges and opportunities faced by
independent garages in the UK.
“The knowledge exchanged at the
REPXPERT Conference proved to be
incredibly inspiring,” said Matthew Selby,
Sales and Marketing Director at Schaeffler
Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd. “That’s
why we’re delighted to make the panel
discussion available to a wider audience
through the release of this must-watch
video.”
Sitting on the panel was REPXPERT
brand ambassador, Andy Savva, ‘The
Garage Inspector,‘ having clocked-up
decades of experience shaping successful
garage businesses. Also present was
Dean Lomas of DC Lomas Ltd, whose
Castrol
EDGE
Castrol EDGE is the company’s most
advanced line of engine oils, designed
and formulated to meet the most
demanding specifications.
Castrol is launching an all-new, nextgeneration
0W-20 low viscosity long-life
engine oil called Castrol EDGE 0W-20 LL
IV, the first lubricant of its kind to secure,
simultaneously, the latest low-viscosity
approvals from BMW, Mercedes-Benz,
and Volkswagen. The new product is
suitable for use in petrol, diesel and
hybrid vehicles, and is available to
consumers and workshops in one-litre,
four-litre and five-litre packs.
To meet a number of challenging new
industry requirements, Castrol has been
working on three important long-life
variants: 0W-20, 0W-30, and 5W-30,
which cover 16 different OEM and industry
specifications. This programme has been
complex and thorough, requiring more
than 110 engine tests, over 35,000 engine
running hours, and over 100 laboratory
test cycles.
Castrol conducted hundreds of
individual tests to prove the lubricant’s
capacity to reduce friction, minimise
metal-to-metal contact, prevent wear
and corrosion, and operate at extremes of
high and low temperatures.
Castrol EDGE 0W-20 LL IV has been
designed to provide the broadest
possible market coverage, most notably
attaining three formal approvals widely
regarded as among the most demanding
in the industry: BMW Longlife-17 FE+,
MB-Approval 229.72 (from Mercedes-
Benz), and VW 508 00/ 509 00 (from
Volkswagen). In addition, the new lubricant
is approved for Porsche C20, meets
Ford WSS-M2C956-A1 specification, and
also meets the requirements of OEMs
recommending ACEA C5 or ACEA C6 0W-
20 oils.
Rigorously tested for over 10,000
hours, Castrol EDGE 0W-20 LL IV works
to reduce friction, increase efficiency
and reduce harmful emissions. The new
product has been designed to address
many challenges associated with modern
engines. While smaller, powerful units can
offer better fuel economy, the greater use
of turbocharging will increase pressure
inside the engine – Castrol EDGE 0W-20
LL IV’s low viscosity formulation minimises
the energy required to move it around an
engine’s internal components.
Castrol runs official industry and OEM
engine tests. New oils are put through
their paces – where appropriate within
the latest design of engine – pushing them
hard over hundreds of hours at severe
pressures and temperatures. With these
engine tests, Castrol also assesses the
impact of fuels of different qualities and in
different operating conditions.
Ralf Wobben, Brand and Product
Specialist at Castrol Europe, comments:
“Remaining at the forefront of a fastpaced
industry is made possible, in
part, by Castrol’s work with vehicle
manufacturers to engineer engine oils
that unlock performance and increase
efficiency. Our world-first low-viscosity
‘combi’ 0W-20 lubricant demonstrates
how we’re taking the latest technological
advances and delivering them in a
product that is suitable for numerous
applications.”
A1 ADAS Solutions Group see
surge of enquiries following UKGBE
Event hailed a success for the ADAS, diagnostic and garage
equipment specialist.
Two weeks on from the UK Garage and Bodyshop Event,
A1 ADAS Solutions Group has reported a surge in
enquiries following the successful trade show.
The event, attended by over 5,000 people, was hailed
a success for the ADAS, diagnostic and garage equipment
specialist with its experts constantly in demand for advice and
information across the two days.
Managing director, Iain Molloy, said: “Since the show,
we’ve had meetings with national companies, bodyshops,
workshops, and colleges, some of whom have travelled from
across the UK to see us at our HQ in Norfolk.
“The enquiries have been for our full range of services
and products with a particular increase in demand for our A1
Remote Diagnostics offering. This is in line with us constantly
hearing about the problems workshops are having with secure
gateways. Sometimes they’re even struggling to reset a service
light.
“At that point, they’re looking for our A1 Remote Diagnostic
service to step in and take the problem away. They just call us,
plug in the interface and we remotely carry out the coding.
Some jobs literally take us ten minutes. Prior to working
with us, that problem might have involved hours of unbilled
technician time, a trip to a main dealer, or both.”
For the A1 ADAS Solutions Group, the UKGBE show followed
hot on the heels of Mechanex-PMM Live last month, an event
that Iain says was equally successful.
“A lot of attendees wanted advice and to buy products
there and then. We saw a lot of the Autel 909 go out which
offers good all-round value for money and has the option to
add ADAS software, multipack secure gateway unlocking, and
EVs.
“As a company we’re experiencing incredible growth. We’ll
be expanding again over the summer and look forward to
seeing everyone at more trade events later in the year.”
UK Garage & Bodyshop Event Review
ALLDATA Europe explores future of automotive
aftermarket at UK Garage & Bodyshop Event
Hosted by Simon Frost, ALLDATA
Europe’s UK sales director, the
discussion centred on the critical
changes that are reshaping the sector. The
topics included the influence of EVs and
ADAS, as well as rapid advancements in
service and repair methods and exploring
how original, accurate repair data, such as
that from ALLDATA Repair, is a vital resource
to professionals.
The panel also focused on how the
industry, collectively, can make it an
increasingly attractive one to work in.
Steve Scott, founder of the SimplyDiag
network and host of the YouTube channel,
Simply Diagnostics, Karl Booth, the head of
sales and marketing for Opus IVS in Europe
and the Rest of the World, and James Dillon,
technologist, diagnostics expert and trainer
– also founder of Technical Topics and host
of the Harmonic Podcast – all voiced views
on their specialist subjects but also listened
to the opinions of their colleagues and
engaged in a lively but respectful discussion.
What was discussed?
Challenges of new vehicle technologies:
Panellists discussed the evolving landscape
of automotive repair, emphasising the need
for foundational training to keep up with
technological advancements.
Steve said: “A workshop’s awareness of
these technologies (is the biggest challenge).
From front-of-house and technicians to
ALLDATA Europe, a provider of original vehicle manufacturer (VM)
diagnostic, repair and maintenance data, showcased its understanding of
the opportunities and challenges faced by the automotive aftermarket by
hosting an expert panel during the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event.
the first-year apprentice, it’s crucial to
understand the implications of getting it
wrong when working on EVs and ADAS.
“We have a responsibility to work safely,
comply with regulations and manufacturer
guidelines. We need to ensure that systems,
especially ADAS, are calibrated correctly
and fully functional when they leave our
workshops.”
Importance of VM data: The necessity of
access to reliable VM data, such as ALLDATA
Repair, was highlighted as the basis for
effective diagnostics and repairs.
Steve continued: “Access to VM data
sources, like ALLDATA Repair, is essential for
providing functional descriptions, system
information, and critical safety bulletins.
Training, information, and equipment should
be viewed, not as hurdles, but as necessities
for efficiently and profitably working on
these systems.”
Investment in tools and training: The
discussion also stressed the importance of
continuous outlay in high-quality diagnostic
tools and ongoing staff training to maintain a
competitive edge.
Karl said: “Modern vehicles are equipped
with many sensors and computer systems.
Diagnostic tools can talk to these systems
to retrieve error codes; however, that only
will ever give a steer; there is still a lot more
work to be carried out at this point – and
that’s where data plays a massive part.
Both sides are needed to help determine
which path you take in problem solving in
diagnostics.
“Traditional diagnostic methods often
require guesswork or a lengthy process
of elimination. Diagnostic tools and data
together in one solution can provide
precise and accurate information about
the problem, reducing the time needed
to identify issues and making the process
more effective, which, in turn, will mean
the workshop will be more efficient and
profitable.”
Staff recruitment and retention:
Strategies for efficient recruitment and
retention of skilled staff were identified
as crucial for workshop profitability and
sustainability.
James argued: “Staff retention is
key; retaining staff relies, not only on a
competitive wage structure, but also
on a well-equipped and well-resourced
workshop.
22 THE GARAGE
UKGBE Review ALLDATA.indd 1 01/07/2024 15:59

UK Garage & Bodyshop Event Review
“Factors which slow down a tech’s work
rate are bad for the wage packet of the
tech and for the profitability of the business.
Typical slow-down factors are linked to the
availability of the tools required do the job,
the type of cars in the workshop and having
access to highly accurate technical service
bulletins, wiring diagrams and service and
repair manuals.”
Comprehensive business strategy: The role
of a robust business strategy and targeted
marketing efforts in ensuring the success of
automotive workshops was stressed.
James advised: “Ditch unprofitable work
and replace it with profitable tasks using
the CAR/CUSTOMER matrix. Develop a
customer proposition to attract profitable
work and build a loyal customer base. Then
aggressively market it.
“If a phone constantly rings with
‘unknowns’ seeking price quotes, it signals
that word-of-mouth marketing is ineffective.
This situation could attract unprofitable
customers.
“Measure and manage all aspects of a
business rigorously. Without measurement,
effective management is impossible.
Incorporate a robust business management
system and reporting into all management
decisions.”
While the panel session was the headline
act of ALLDATA Europe’s UK Garage &
Bodyshop Event, Simon reported that the
team’s stand was a hive of activity too,
with existing customers and new prospects
offered a warm welcome; in fact, ALLDATA
Europe is delighted to confirm that dozens
of professionals signed-up for a month’s
free trial, while many also took advantage
of the ‘show offer’ of signing up and paying
11 months for the price of a 12-month
subscription.
Simon added: “Naturally, our panel was
a vital part of our UK Garage & Bodyshop
Event; we were pleased that many of the
audience found their way back to our stand
at the conclusion of it – we had some great
conversations. On behalf of everyone, I
would also like to thank James, Karl and
Steve for their co-operation and support.
“On the stand, we enjoyed meeting our
growing customer base. We also gave them
the chance to meet the faces behind the
Info Centre Service, a great resource that
our customers can utilise when in need of
extra support when using ALLDATA Repair.”
COMLINE KICKS OFF SUMMER OF FOOTBALL
WITH SOCCER SKILL SHOT CHALLENGE
PRIZES TO BE WON WITH COMLINE’S ENTERTAINING ONLINE FOOTBALL GAME
To add to the excitement of this summer’s festival of football,
Comline is pleased to announce the launch of an online Soccer
Skill Shot game and competition. The aim is to get participants
into the spirit of this year’s highly anticipated tournament, provide
the opportunity for some (friendly!) competition, and give everyone
the chance to win fantastic prizes in the process.
In the game, players can channel their inner talent and have 60
seconds to knock over as many ‘targets’ as possible with the ball.
Achieving 500 points or more will automatically get the participant
into the Comline prize draw, but the aim is to achieve the greatest
number of points possible for the best chance of being drawn as a
winner.
And the prizes on offer are certainly eye catching, with star prize
winners scooping a football shirt of their choice and an incredible
Milwaukee impact wrench. Ten runners-up will also receive a
Comline ‘Crew Collection’ T-shirt, which is perfect for the summer
months.
Comline, renowned for its aftermarket parts line-up that includes
braking, filtration, and steering & suspension, has launched the
game as the summer tournament kicks-off with the final whistle set
to sound the day after the final on July 15th. There’s plenty of time
to challenge your friends and colleagues and get your name on the
leaderboard.
To access the game, simply head to the Comline Facebook page
or visit https://comline.soccerskillshot.com/
Comline General Manager – Marketing and Communications,
Leigh Davies, said: “It’s set to be a summer dominated by football,
so we wanted to add our own little spin on the beautiful game by
introducing the Comline Soccer Skill Shot challenge.
NEWS
Garage’s strategy
to work less hours
pays off
Owner reveals how one phone call sparked a
change in mindset for the whole business.
Automotive accessory specialist, Ring Automotive,
is urging technicians to educate customers on the
importance of headlight alignment.
Although the aftermarket is a fruitful industry, full of
specialists that are enthusiastic about vehicles and how
to repair them, something that the industry still struggles
with is making the most out of situations that should be more
profitable than they currently are.
An anonymous survey carried out by Ring Automotive late last
year, revealed that technicians are not making the most of the
bulb business that enters the workshop, with more than three
quarters (76%) of technicians not advising customers that bulbs
should be replaced in pairs, or proactively following best practice
advice and replacing them in pairs. Another discovery was that
50% of workshops do not charge for fitting bulbs, therefore
losing out on potential profit each year.
While changing a bulb is a regular job for a technician, the
headlight must be properly aligned after the job has been
completed, but are technicians simply telling customers they
have replaced the bulb or are they adding value by saying the
bulb in both headlamps have been replaced to ensure even light
output and they have been aligned correctly to ensure they are
not causing glare to other road users. This is an ideal opportunity
for technicians to upsell services, when a car needs a new
headlamp bulb, it should be replaced as part of pair, as it’s being
part of a paired system, and then it should be aligned correctly.
This service takes time, and so should be charged for accordingly
as part of the overall fitting service.
This is particularly relevant as there has been a lot of chatter
recently about drivers being dazzled by other road users’
headlights, and many of these incidents could well be because
they are not properly aligned.
Aligning headlights after replacing the bulb not only ensures
that the beam pattern is correct, it also means that those lights
will not dazzle others and can provide an extra income revenue
for workshops.
Ring Automotive therefore encourages workshops to not only
fit reputable and quality bulbs, but to also ensure headlights are
aligned correctly to give maximum visibility on the road.
Court Autos, a family-run Bosch garage in Shropshire, has
revealed how changing its approach to the work it attracts
through its website, has ultimately changed the garage’s whole
mindset and the way it does business.
Harry Alford, along with his brother and sister who also work
in the business, are the third generation of Alfords to be at the
helm after their grandad opened the doors nearly 40 years ago.
He says prior to getting a website that ‘actually works’, the
team were often starting their day at 4am or working late into
the evening because they didn’t want to let customers down.
He explained: “To continue grandad’s legacy, I knew we had to
really push the business forward. Marketing was something we’d
never invested in, apart from an old website years ago. It looked
okay on the surface but might as well have been in another
world; nobody could find it.
“I found Garage Services Online and that one phone call about
a new website sparked a change that not only reduced the
number of hours we work, it changed our whole way of thinking.
“Now, we have a clever website that attracts the work we
specifically want. By changing the profile of jobs coming in, we’re
running the business; it is not running us.”
Whilst the garage offers servicing and repairs, accident
recovery and vehicle sales, Harry really wanted to grow its
bodyshop services. His asked the Garage Services Online team to
create a website that would drive growth for the bodyshop side,
as well as be found for its regular most profitable everyday jobs.
Harry continued: “It wasn’t long before the website caught
us the biggest fish: a £12k repair job for a motorhome that had
been in a collision. We’d never had a job that big.
“It signalled the start of the change. Just last week, we picked
up ongoing servicing and repair work for a local company’s van
fleet. We 100 percent would not have been on their radar if we
didn’t have a website that reflected the professionalism of our
business online as it is on the ground.
“Basically, Garage Services Online has done us the most
massive favour.”
Jim Lang, managing director at Garage Services Online, said:
“Court Autos’ website has seen a 63 percent increase in organic
appearances on Google in the last six months alone. That has led
to an 89 percent increase in organic click throughs.
“But the work doesn’t stop there. We’re continuing to help
Harry by adding more pages to attract work that gives a quick
ROI on his investment in new tools. These tools are necessary to
work on the changing car parc and it’s vital the website evolves
and reflects that.”
OESAA Academy Live events inspire
industry professionals of tomorrow
Students taking part in the OESAA
Academy Live training roadshow
have praised the hands-on
approach of Original Equipment
Suppliers Aftermarket Association
(OESAA) members.
OESAA Academy Live shows students
and apprentices the different career
opportunities available in the automotive
sector, as well as illustrate existing and new
technologies, products, tools, technical
best practices, and diagnostics.
Following events at Trafford College,
Suffolk New College and Heat (Hybrid
Electric Automotive Training) Blackburn
College, OESAA caught-up with three
students to ask about the impact these
events could have on their studies and
future careers.
“Opened our eyes”
Jawad, from HEAT Blackburn College,
highlighted VARTA’s battery presentation,
in particular: “It was very helpful because
while we talk about batteries in class,
VARTA opened our eyes and widened our
knowledge about the different battery
types, like AGM or EFB.”
On whether he wants to forge a longterm
career in the sector, Jawad added:
“I believe the motor industry is looked
down upon; I think a lot of people think the
automotive sector is just about oil changes
– manual labour – but we’ve learned that
there is so much skill and knowledge
required. How to fix a timing belt, for
example, requires ability.
“I think I could make a lucrative career
from the automotive sector too – if I have
the knowledge!”
Kadeer, also from HEAT Blackburn
College, highlighted the broad scope of
his learning experience: “As an industry
professional, I believe in specialising in
one brand – rather than focusing on every
brand – because systems work in different
ways. The same goes for powertrains.”
Broadening horizons
At Suffolk New College, Malachi, a T-level
engineering student, highlighted how
OESAA’s experts helped expand his
understanding of the automotive sector:
“I really enjoyed hearing about all the
different aspects of engineering. It’s more
than just the mechanical side; it’s about
diagnostics and the future of automotive
technology, like hydrogen vehicles and
electric cars.”
The exposure to various pathways within
the automotive industry was particularly
interesting to Malachi: “I was never aware
of the diverse roles within the automotive
sector until OESAA Academy Live. Bosch
and Brembo opened my eyes to potential
careers I hadn’t considered before.”
OESAA hopes to inspire more apprentices
and students during its next two events,
scheduled to take place in October. Details
will be shared in due course.
STEERINGANDSUSPENSION
Steering & Suspension
components remain a
constant for the aftermarket
Dayco is always keen to support the
industry with the original equipment
(OE) products and information it
needs to benefit from the opportunities
that the developing market provides.
Although independent workshops
need to be ready and react to a growing
demand for EV specific replacement parts,
regardless of the final outcome from an
engine perspective, steering & suspension
components are one of the few product
groups that are not threatened by the
growth in the sales of hybrid and electric
vehicles because, stating the obvious,
whatever the powertrain and irrespective
of whether they are driven by an occupant
or autonomously, vehicles will still need to
absorb bumps and imperfections in the
road and steer around corners. This means
that demand for replacement components
will be one of the few constants for the long
term.
In common with many other parts, the
requirement for replacement steering
& suspension components occurs
automatically due to wear generated by
using the vehicle, but is also exaggerated by
its age, which is another factor moving in
the favour of the independent sector, as the
average age of a car is now around 10 years
old, a figure it hasn’t been at for many years.
However, what distinguishes this product
group is that the demand is further
stimulated by the generally poor state of
the roads, as it’s these parts that must
isolate the vehicle’s occupants from the
consequences of driving through potholes,
over speed humps and up aggressive curb
stones, and they often suffer as a result.
Motor factors and the independent
workshops they supply have no shortage
of options when it comes to replacement
steering & suspension components, as the
market is awash with them, but recognising
the importance of fitting parts that are
of OE quality, for what is a fundamentally
safety critical component, should be their
priority.
As Dayco is an OE supply partner to
many of the world’s VMs, our steering &
suspension components are equivalent in
appearance, material composition, weight
and construction, and possess the same
handling and performance characteristics
as the OE part, which ensures the safety
and security of the vehicle’s occupants.
Additional benefits of the 3,300 strong
Despite the growing trend for electric powertrains,
steering & suspension components remain a
constant for the aftermarket, reminds Dayco
Dayco steering & suspension range, which
encompasses axle joints, tie rod ends/
assemblies and steering boots, as well as
track control arms, ball joints, stabiliser
links and bushes, include a premium quality
protective coating for maximum anticorrosion
resistance, a two-year unlimited
mileage warranty and the convenience that
all the necessary auxiliary items, such as
fastenings and clips, that are required for
their fitment, come within the Dayco kit.
It has long been a Dayco priority to raise
awareness of best practice methods when
replacing components, so we’re keen
to remind workshops that after the new
steering & suspension parts have been
fitted, but before the vehicle is passed back
to the owner, it’s important that a wheel
alignment and tracking check is carried
out, as the vehicle’s steering geometry,
handling characteristics, as well as the
correct functioning of its ADAS systems,
rely on these being set to the VM’s specific
tolerances.
For vehicles being repaired following a
collision, Dayco also allows factors to offer
bodyshops complete kits that include the
replacement components for both sides of
the vehicle to ensure that it is returned to
its best possible, pre-accident condition.
quality power transmission products in the
The specialist for brake, steering and
suspension parts under the umbrella of SBS
Automotive is adding 209 part numbers to
its portfolio, which together cover more
than 7,300 vehicle applications. In NK’s
core markets, NK brake hoses are now
available to the aftermarket for more than
25 million additional vehicles.
In the markets in which NK is active,
distributors and workshops will soon be
able to rely on the company’s proven
quality for a large number of further
service cases: With the announced
expansion of the product range, the total
number of SKUs will grow to 1,680, while
market coverage in the core markets will
increase to 93.5 percent.
Best-selling brake hoses for many
leading brands
The new part numbers include many fastmoving
items for popular vehicle models.
For example, NK brake hoses are available
for the first time for various versions of the
Mercedes CLA 250, GLA 250 and A220
from model year 2021 onwards. These
represent around 1.2 million registered
vehicles in NK’s target markets. The same
applies to various versions of the Renault
Zoe and Renault Clio from model year 2012
onwards, which are registered more than
2.5 million times, and to a large number of
VW Group models from model year 2017
and later, which can be found on the roads
more than 3.1 million times. The bestselling
brake hoses in the product range
expansion, however, even account for
almost 3.5 million Citroën, DS and Peugeot
cars built from 2013 on, including the
Citroën C4 and C5 Aircross as well as the
Peugeot models 308, 408, 508 and 5008.
Quality without compromise
Like all brake hoses from NK, the newly
added part numbers comply with the
respective OE-specifications and therefore
guarantee hassle-free installation. Also,
they meet the highest standards of
durability and safety and fulfill all relevant
industry standards, including FMVSS 106,
SAE J1401, and DIN ISO 3996. They are
produced in manufacturing facilities
that are certified in accordance with
supplier standard IATF 16949 and come
with a five-layer construction with three
EPDM layers and two PET fabric layers.
This makes them flexible and at the same
time highly resilient, abrasion-resistant
and proof against ageing, chemicals, oil
and weathering. The supplied clamps and
fittings are OE-identical and galvanized
and therefore optimally protected against
rust.
All parts will be available from summer
on and come with a five-year warranty
against material- and production defects.
The corresponding vehicle applications
and product details have already been
delivered to TecDoc and other electronic
catalogs.
Thinkcar UK Euro Expert 195:
“Must-have” tool for 2024
Thinkcar UK’s latest tool release is the Euro Expert 195, which the
company expects to become its best-selling tool of the year and
the must-have tool for 2024 and beyond.
This mid-range tool is a9-inch
professional diagnostic pad
offering THINKLINK Lite VCI at the
amazing price-point of just £1,350 plus
VAT. This includes two years of software
updates. “We expect the Euro Expert
195 will be one of our best-sellers this
year,” said Alex Gillbanks, Managing
Director of Impact Diagnostics, the
specialist supplier behind Thinkcar UK.”
The Euro Expert 195 provides
comprehensive system functionality and
supports DO IP and CAN FD protocols,
and retains the sleek, functional
design of its predecessor. This ensures
seamless compatibility with a range
of external modules such as printers,
battery testers, thermal imager and
worklights. It also comes with a TPMS
programmer to work with Thinkcar’s
universal TPMS valves.
“The Euro Expert 195 offers
exceptional functionality with Thinkcar’s
renowned hardware quality,” said Alex.
“The tool also offers Topology mode and
in built-TPMS programming, which is very
rare for tools priced at this level.”
That’s not all however. The Euro Expert
195 is also a gateway into Thinkcar UK’s
ecosystem of garages offering remote
diagnostics. “The real cherry on the cake
is access to the Thinkcar UK live remote
programming network,” said Alex, “where
you can access other workshops who can
help to guide and program the vehicle with
you.”
KNIPEX presents new threecomponent
Comfort Handles
Multi-component handles are now
even more comfortable to use
The new Comfort Handles from
KNIPEX feature a third, non-slip
component that optimises haptic
properties and enhances the handling
of the tools with multi-component grips.
From this year, KNIPEX will be gradually
converting these pliers to the improved
handles. There will also be a KNIPEXtend
interface for extensions to the pliers, for
instance, for fall protection.
2024 sees the typical red and blue multicomponent
handles from KNIPEX gain another
component for even better handling of the pliers.
A soft grey and specially structured surface texture
optimises the ergonomics of the large range of pliers and
thus ensures even better grip and control. The soft blue component
for a secure and comfortable grip and the firm red component
for maximum durability are retained and continue to stand for the
highest quality and proven recognisability of KNIPEX tools. The
changeover will take place gradually from this year onwards, with
the electrically insulated tools remaining with the tried and tested
VDE-tested two-component handles for the time being.
Another new feature of the KNIPEX multi-component sheaths is
a KNIPEXtend interface - an extension that can be used in a variety
of ways. Among other things, a KNIPEX TetheredTool clip can be
attached here for fall protection or a clip called KNIPEX ColorCode,
which individually identifies the pliers with a coloured marking. But
this is just the beginning. The KNIPEXtend interface can be used for
a wide range of clip ideas in the future.
At https://www.knipex.com/
WORKSHOP
Introducing
MAGFLEX1000, the most
flexible light from Ring!
Automotive accessory specialist, Ring Automotive, continues to add new and innovative
products to its portfolio, the latest being the MAGFLEX1000 (RUBL1500).
The MAGFLEX1000 is an LED strip light that can be twisted, bent and
contorted into all kinds of shapes, making it incredibly versitle for a
host of environments.
It also comes with a stretchable strap with fixing hooks at either
end that twist 180o, allowing the lamp to span a wide area, such as
under the bonnet, between vehicle doors when doing interior work,
across the under side of the car or mounted to the ramp as a site
light.
The light can be used as a:
● Under bonnet lamp
● Site light
● Ramp light
● Slim inspection lamp
● Hands free work light
● Interior work light
● Hazard warning light
● Wearable for hazard identification
It has four light settings, which changes how long it can be used
before needing a charge, for instance, on the low light setting (400
lumens), it can last for 20 hours, on the middle setting, it’ll give
light for six and a half hours and on the highest light output, which
is 1,000 lumens, it’ll last for three hours. The fourth light setting is
a red light option. Once the lamp has gone flat, it’ll just take seven
hours charging until it has a full battery again.
Henry Bisson, marketing director for Ring, enthused: “There’s
nothing like this on the market, which makes it even more exciting
to introduce the MAGFLEX1000, and it’s not just restricted to
automotive technicians, as this application can work for a multitude
of industries - plumbing, construction, electricians, the possibilities
are endless!
“We regularly take our new products to technicians to test and we
also get marketing images and the feedback we’ve already had from
technicians has been overwhelmingly positive. The flexibility of the
lamp means that professionals do not have to keep changing the light
source they have, but can instead adapt the MAGFLEX1000 to suit
their needs, saving them precious time when working on jobs.”
