Summer Injuries: American Mobile

Physical Therapy Can Help

By Valter Cipollari, American Mobile Physical Therapy

Summer is synonymous with outdoor activities, from swimming,

hiking, playing sports, or gardening; these activities are great for

physical health and mental well-being but can come with a risk for

injuries. Understanding common injuries and how PT aids recovery

is crucial for staying active and healthy throughout the season.

Common Summer Injuries:

Sprains and strains occur when sudden movements, overexertion,

and uneven surfaces lead to sprains (ligament injuries) and strains

(muscle or tendon injuries). Symptoms include pain, swelling,

bruising, and limited mobility.

Fractures many causes include high-impact activities such as biking,

skateboarding, and contact sports, which can result in broken

bones. Symptoms of these types of injuries include tense pain,

swelling, bruising, and inability to move the affected area.

Heat-related illnesses happen when someone has been exposed

to high temperatures and has not properly hydrated. This can lead

to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion or

heat stroke are dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, and even

loss of consciousness.

Overuse injuries occur when repetitive motions in activities like

running, swimming, or tennis lead to overuse injuries such as tendinitis.

Some symptoms of overuse injuries injuries include persistent

pain, swelling, and reduced performance.

Here’s how physical therapy can help you in the prevention,

treatment, and rehabilitation of summer injuries:

Pain management techniques such as ice or heat therapy, electrical

stimulation, and manual therapy to help alleviate pain and reduce

inflammation.

Restore mobility with tailored exercises designed to improve range

of motion, strength, and flexibility. For example, stretching and

strengthening exercises help recover from sprains and strains, and

improved mobility enables individuals to return to daily activities

and sports faster.

Prevent future injuries with education on proper body mechanics,

posture, and techniques to avoid re-injury. We will provide a customized

conditioning and strengthening program that will help to

enhance overall physical fitness and resilience.

Heat-related illness recovery requires gradual reconditioning and

hydration strategies to help patients safely return to activity after

heat-related illnesses. PT can implement cooling techniques, and

provide environmental control education.

When you choose American Mobile Physical Therapy, you will

receive a customized treatment plan based on your specific injury
