Communication is the process of connectingwith our world and other people. This connection happens wheninformation is received by our senses, responded to, and shared toobtain necessities for living as well as building and maintaining relationships.Hearing is the sense that connects us with the world byallowing us to listen, learn, and engage in life. The need to connecthas led to the invention of many communication devices.In 1887, the desire for communication caused Captain Arthur Kellerand wife, Kate, to travel from Tuscumbia, Alabama to Boston seekinghelp for their 6-year-old daughter, Helen, who lost her hearingand sight after an illness at the age of 19 months. They met with educator,Alexander Graham Bell, who specialized in teaching peoplewho were hard of hearing or deaf. He gave them hope that theirdaughter, isolated by her loss of hearing and sight, could learn tocommunicate and be educated. He referred them to Boston’s PerkinsSchool for the Blind, where they met recent graduate Anne Sullivan,who became Helen’s teacher and lifelong friend.By Anita Giles MS,CCC-A Audiologist,Physicians Hearing CenterDespite having achieved worldwide fame, Bell was working withchildren who were hard of hearing or deaf. His background providedhim with a personal perspective on the power of speech andcommunication. His father and grandfather were researchers and expertsin the field of voice and speech elocution mechanics. Alexanderwas their apprentice as they taught speech to people with hearingloss. The need to communicate with his mother, Eliza Grace, andhis wife, Mabel, (who were both deafened by childhood illness) wasthe impetus that caused him to focus his attention on experimentingwith sound and studying the physiology of speech. He began hiseducational career in the US in 1870 teaching oral speech to studentswith hearing loss and opened a school in Boston to train other teachersin 1872. Living and working with the impact of hearing loss oncommunication sparked Bell’s interest in the principles of acousticsand speech, which led to experiments in transmitting sound wavesover wire. His pursuit to create a solution for hearing loss would ultimatelylead to the creation of one of the most important inventionsof all time: the telephone.On March 7, 1986, Alexander Graham Bell was awarded U.S. PatentNo. 174,465 for his "electrical speech machine" -- his name forthe first telephone. Bell’s contributions to science and communicationdid not end with the telephone as he held over 18 patents for hiswork in communications. He believed that to understand and treat hearingloss, you must be able to measure a person’s ability to hear. Usingthe information obtained from the hearing assessment, manufacturerswere able to design hearing aids for an individual’s unique lossof hearing.In 1920, Bell Telephone Laboratories’ engineers devised a soundmeasurement unit to quantify audio levels in telephone circuits andmeasure the transmission efficiency of telephone facilities. Theynamed it “bel” in honor of their founder, Alexander Graham Bell.The unit used to measure the loudness of sound is a decibel, whichis one-tenth of a bel. The decibel scale helps us measure the softestsound we can detect but also noise loud enough to damage hearing.Hearing as our “social sense” is used to communicate with others.Losing the ability to detect and interpret sound is harmful to yourhealth and wellbeing by isolating you, increasing loneliness, and acceleratingthe loss of your memory and cognitive functions. Whenconcern arises about the health of your hearing, an audiometer willbe used to assess your ability to hear pitch and loudness. This informationwill be used to create a graphical representation (audiogram)of the softest sound that you can detect at each frequency, which isused to determine the most effective treatment for your hearing loss.Often the encouragement to have your hearing evaluated comesfrom a family member or friend.
