My Role in

Huntsville City Hall

By Shane Davis,

Director of Urban

and Economic

Development

As Director of Urban and Economic Development one of my primary roles is to ensure

eight city departments within the Urban Development Division have the support and resources

needed to provide quality services to our citizens and businesses. These departments

include Planning, Zoning, GIS, Community Development, Natural Resources, Engineering,

Building Inspections, Water Pollution Control, and Economic Development.

In addition to departmental oversight, I also work daily with community partners to

bring development opportunities to Huntsville. These development opportunities include

industrial recruitment and expansion for new jobs, commercial projects, retail and residential

development.

In my role, I report to Mayor Tommy Battle, who provides the vision for our City.

Through his leadership, our team targets emerging new industrial sectors and works on

a State and Federal level to leverage the City’s assets. City Council also provides a tremendous

voice for my office. They provide insights about neighborhood infrastructure

challenges in their respective districts. In addition, Town Hall meetings offer valuable

resident feedback to help guide our efforts for specific areas of the City.

Huntsville remains in a high growth mode, and the most challenging part of my job

is time management. We routinely are working 25-30 new projects ranging from new

industry recruitment, existing industry expansions, commercial/retail opportunities, and

general redevelopment projects throughout the city. In addition, my Urban Development

staff, a three-person team, also works to manage and implement the City’s 10-Year Capital

Improvement Plan.

With a sharp eye on economic development, our team addresses future challenges in infrastructure

and workforce. For most people, when you think about infrastructure investments,

you think roads. While our transportation system investments are at the top of the

list, we also work with our partners on other critical infrastructure such as utilities, public

transit, air and rail services, housing, and other sectors that will impact Huntsville’s future.

This includes developing strategies to ensure we have a dependable and sustainable

utility infrastructure, maximized transportation options, and a safe and reliable system

for citizens to remain mobile (not just from a car standpoint).

On workforce, we must continue to invest in projects that build upon the great quality of

life that Huntsville enjoys. These investments, along with an affordable housing strategy,

will continue to provide a quality workforce that our corporate citizens can have confidence.

I am most proud of how we have diversified our economy over the past several years.

This work has provided an abundance of job advancement opportunities for our citizens.

As I tell our staff, our mission is to make a positive impact on someone that we may

never meet. When we are successful in that regard, we provide a lasting impact to an

individual or family. That creates a ripple effect that shows up in our neighborhoods, our

schools, and local businesses from new revenues being infused across the community

from these job opportunities.

I absolutely love this community. Our mandate is to continue to make the best version

of Huntsville possible. The City works daily to make the right decisions and investments

that ensures a strong economy providing opportunities for our citizens and business and

a high quality of life for those who chose to call Huntsville home. Continued growth

and focus in sectors such as cyber security, life sciences, energy, and music are great examples

of how we are shaping Huntsville’s future. Outside of the industrial sectors, focus

on new growth corridors open the opportunity for an increased tax base.

However, more importantly, we continue working in our existing neighborhoods and

commercial corridors to ensure they remain healthy through redevelopment and new development

projects. The most rewarding part of this job is seeing the excitement from the

community on how Huntsville has transformed in recent years. This validation affirms

that our team is delivering growth and new amenities to all parts of Huntsville. This has

been and will continue to be our mission to Huntsville.

Huntsville and Madison County are growing. You can see it. If you

have lived here any time at all, you notice the additional traffic on

the roads. They call it growing pains. They say if you’re not growing,

you’re dying. Maybe that’s true but it doesn’t seem to make the

longer commute times any less arduous. So what is local leadership

doing to stay ahead of these traffic issues? City and County leaders

are working hard to secure funds, plan and keep improving the network

of roads to keep traffic flowing. Where does the money come

from and how do we get what we need? That’s the rub.

Money comes from the Feds, the State, and some is local money.

The County and City do receive an allotment (a share) of gas tax.

Gas tax goes into a pot and there is a formula for distribution. Those

“local” funds are used primarily for repair and maintenance (repaving

and potholes) not for new roads or major improvements.

Funds are not distributed based on population, but that figures in.

The County and City rarely build new roads, they mostly maintain

roads but do improve the roads by widening and improving intersections.

Repaving now runs in the ballpark of $90,000 or more per

mile for a two lane road so that money doesn't go as far as it used

to. The additional gas tax that passed the legislature a few years ago

is called Rebuild Alabama and that money is distributed differently

than the previous gas tax money. Although more of it can be used

for major improvements, we get a smaller share of that pot.

The County/City is not responsible for the State Highways. The Alabama

Department of Transportation (ALDOT) handles the routes like

Highways 231/431, Highway 72, Highway 53, I-565, etc. The legislature

has little to say about this funding. ALDOT and the Governors

administration decide this. With this money there is usually a local

match required of 20% to 30%. Once funding is attained, any project

with any portion of Federal funds requires environmental surveys (2

to 3 years), road engineering (1 to 2 years), right of way acquisition

(up to 3 years +), and then another year of utility relocation. The construction

phase for a major artery might take two to three years.

Here's the good news. We have several major road projects queued

up that will begin shortly. Especially good for south Huntsville is

the East Arsenal Connector that will run along the east side of the

Arsenal from 565 to Hobbs Road. It will be three phases and in

the first phase (565 to Gate 10) engineering is completed, right of

Roads (and Bridges) of Madison County

Commissioner District 5

way acquisition has begun and bidding should begin later this year.

This will take a load off the Parkway once completed. Other major

projects throughout the county that are funded and will begin soon

are widening of 565 from Wall Triana to County Line, Hwy 72 West

widening from Providence to Jeff Road, and going to 4 lanes on

Hwy 53 up to Old Railroad Bed Road. The northern bypass from

Research Park Blvd to the Parkway is under construction now.

Over all I think local leadership is doing very well trying to keep up

with growth with the resources we have.

The 2024 Alabama Legislative Session Review

By James Lomax, Alabama House Representative, District 20

© Best Version Media

The 2024 Alabama State Legislative Session

concluded on May 9th. It was a whirlwind of

a session, and one that saw many great pieces

of legislation passing both bodies of the legislature

and being signed into law by Governor

Ivey.

While many of the headlines focused in on

debate over gambling, legislation that will

be beneficial for Alabamians for generations

worked through the legislature.

In an overall review, I believe one of the most

impactful pieces of legislation is the bipartisan

Childcare tax credit bill that the Gover-

nor signed into law. This law provides tax credits for working families, employers, and

certain childcare facilities in Alabama. As the cost of childcare has increased dramatically

over the past few years, this will help working families secure childcare for their

children, allowing them to participate in the workforce by creating more options for

childcare and helping childcare become more affordable at the same time.

The childcare tax credit was part of the Working for Alabama plan. This was an ambitious

set of six bills that are aimed at improving the workforce participation in our

state. Our state has had record unemployment for the last few years, yet our workforce

participation rate is among the lowest in the country, hovering around 57%. This

means out of able-bodied Alabamians, only 57% of them are choosing to work, and

some not by choice. Barriers such as childcare or lack of access to education prevents

them from joining the workforce. These bills aimed to stymie this, while creating economic

opportunity for our entire state.

I was proud to personally sponsor one of the Working for Alabama pieces of legislation

in the House of Representatives, a bill that created Research & Development

Corridors. This will allow municipalities in our state to designate certain zones in their

cities as areas for R&D, and they will be able to offer economic incentives to targeted

business, creating more jobs within more cutting-edge industries that we can attract

away from places like Silicon Valley and other tech-hubs of America.

Another bipartisan bill I was excited to sponsor created code for Advanced Air Mobility

in the state of Alabama. Advanced Air Mobility is a new industry that involves

flying unmanned aircraft that can be used to move cargo or people. If you think this

sounds like the “Jetson’s”, you are right! This industry is being used in states like

North Dakota and there has been a positive ROI for their communities. We are working

today on the industries of tomorrow in Alabama.

Our area has phenomenal representation. I am valuing the opportunity to work with and

learn from leaders like Chairman Rex Reynolds (General Fund Committee), Chairman

Andy Whitt (Economic Development Committee), Minority Leader Anthony Daniels,

and Senator Sam Givhan. They are not only respected leaders in our community, but I

can report back that they are respected leaders in our state as well.

It is the highest honor of my life to serve as your voice in the Alabama House of Representatives.

I ran to make the future a bit brighter, and I hope that my actions reflect that.

As the father of two young daughters, I hope our state is one that they, and members of

your family, can be proud to call home.

Health Centers Improve the

Health of the Community

By Adilene Guzman, Community Outreach Coordinator, HAPPI Health

A Health Center is a non-profit organization that stands by the

mission to improve the well-being of the community it serves.

Health Centers save the healthcare system billions of dollars annually

due to the reduced cost of healthcare services. They focus

on providing primary care services to uninsured people in underserved

areas.

HAPPI Health is a federally qualified non-profit health center

look-alike, which means we comply with all HRSA (Health

Resources Services Administration) requirements but do not receive

total government grant funding under the Health Center

Program. We can serve our community by applying for grants

and accepting donations from those who wish to help patients

seek medical care regardless of their financial situation. We are

eligible to receive discounts on prescription drugs and can provide

free vaccines for children who may not have insurance.

HAPPI Health works alongside Sparkman Pharmacy to give discounts,

and conveniently, they are located inside our HAPPI St.

Clair location in downtown Huntsville. Also, we have recently

partnered with LabCorp to provide lab services on-site at all

HAPPI Health locations, and they also have discounts available

to our patients.

Regarding discounts as a federally qualified health center, we

use a sliding fee discount program at HAPPI Health. The sliding

fee scale discount program is household size and incomebased,

and this determines the amount a patient would have to

pay for each appointment. The lowest sliding fee discount scale

fee is $30; once you qualify, the price will remain the same for

an entire year. The sliding fee discount allows patients to care for

their healthcare needs at an affordable cost. If a patient cannot

afford the visit even with the discount, we do not deny them the

required health services they need.

We have three locations because our community is growing

rapidly, and we offer several medical services at each location.

Our HAPPI Health St. Clair location provides pediatric, family

medicine, and behavioral health services. At our HAPPI Health

Sparkman, we offer the same services, and we have an evening

clinic available on Thursdays until 8 pm. Then we have

our HAPPI Urgent Care & Hispanic Clinic, where we also offer

primary care services through our Hispanic Clinic side and

counseling for our behavioral health patients. Our Urgent Care

serves children and adults, and you do not have to be a patient

of HAPPI Health to use this service. We are also open on Saturdays

from 9 pm-1 pm.

Two other federally qualified health centers are in Huntsville,

Thrive Alabama, and Central North Alabama Health Services

Inc. Each year, in honor of National Health Center Week, we

join forces to host an incredible event called the Community

Fun and Wellness Festival! Our festival will take place on Saturday,

August 10th, from 10:00 am- 1:00 pm at Dr. Richard

Showers, Sr Recreation Center located at 4600 Blue Spring

Rd. We will provide free sports physicals, health screenings,

raffles, a petting zoo, face painting, free snow cones for the

first 100 attendees, and more! As the health centers of North

Alabama, it is our pleasure to serve our community and work

together to impact the health of those we serve. Join us for a

day of fun and wellness!

Peripheral Neuropathy

By Dr. Christine Spurlock DC, Fiona Wellness Center

What are the Symptoms?

If ten people with neuropathy are in a room together, they might

all describe their symptoms differently. However, one thing they

would have in common is that they all noticed an unusual feeling

in their toes, and they first noticed it at a time when they were still,

such as when lying in bed. Most people might not even be sure when

it began since the first signs can be easy to ignore. Some people feel

a burning sensation like their feet are on fire, while others might

describe their feet feeling like ice blocks. Some patients have no

unusual feeling in their feet but feel unsteady while walking. Over

the years I have also heard some unusual descriptions. One patient

described a feeling of having duct tape wrapped around the balls

of her feet, and another said it felt like ants running up and down

his legs. Your nerves are what communicate what is going on in

your body, and when they are damaged they are going to repeat the

wrong message.

What causes this nerve damage? There are several causes of neuropathy,

and today we will cover some of the most common.

Uncontrolled Diabetes. With high blood sugar (glucose) levels,

damage will be done to the small blood vessels that supply the

nerves in your body. Without the essential nutrients supplied by this

blood, the nerve fibers can become damaged. Sometimes this happens

before the patient is even aware of their diabetic issues.

Chemotherapy: It is estimated that 30 to 50 percent of people who

receive chemotherapy experience PN. Chemotherapy-induced peripheral

neuropathy or CIPN happens when the medicine designed

to kill the cancer cells also kills the healthy nerve accessory cells.

Unlike damage to other cells in the body, your nerves have a slow

rate of renewal, so the body often cannot repair the damage after the

treatment is over. One practice that is now being done in some clinics

to prevent nerve damage is using ice baths on the hands and feet.

The idea behind this is the cold restricts the blood flow to the hands

and feet so that those areas receive less medication, and hopefully

less damage to the nerves.

Idiopathic: Sometimes there is no known cause of the neuropathy.

Typically this begins between the ages of 50 and 60.

What are the treatments for PN? When I was a student I was

taught that neuropathy was something a patient had to live with and

was often progressive, meaning that it would get worse over time.

Today with advancing technology, there are many therapies used

for neuropathy.

In the 12 years I have been focused on helping patients with neuropathy

I have found these to be the most effective treatments:

MLS Robotic Laser: The M6 laser therapy works by emitting specific

wavelengths of light to target damaged tissues. The robotics

light energy penetrates deeply into the tissue to stimulate repair and

regeneration.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy: Of all the therapies I use,

PEMF has the most studies showing effective nerve regeneration,

including studies by the World Health Origination and the NIH.

PEMF therapy works by delivering electromagnetic pulses to targeted

areas of the body. These pulses create a series of electrical

charges within the cells, activating cellular healing. This mimics the

natural frequencies of the body optimizing the cellular environment

for regeneration and repair.

Shockwave Therapy: This therapy targets damaged nerve tissue to

stimulate the body's natural healing process, improve blood circulation,

and speed up healing.

Hearing Health Matters:

Connecting and Communicating

“Necessity is the mother of invention” is a proverb attributed to

Plato and infers that the primary driving force for change and invention

is a strong need. Communication is the process of connecting

with our world and other people. This connection happens when

information is received by our senses, responded to, and shared to

obtain necessities for living as well as building and maintaining relationships.

Hearing is the sense that connects us with the world by

allowing us to listen, learn, and engage in life. The need to connect

has led to the invention of many communication devices.

In 1887, the desire for communication caused Captain Arthur Keller

and wife, Kate, to travel from Tuscumbia, Alabama to Boston seeking

help for their 6-year-old daughter, Helen, who lost her hearing

and sight after an illness at the age of 19 months. They met with educator,

Alexander Graham Bell, who specialized in teaching people

who were hard of hearing or deaf. He gave them hope that their

daughter, isolated by her loss of hearing and sight, could learn to

communicate and be educated. He referred them to Boston’s Perkins

School for the Blind, where they met recent graduate Anne Sullivan,

who became Helen’s teacher and lifelong friend.

By Anita Giles MS,

CCC-A Audiologist,

Physicians Hearing Center

Despite having achieved worldwide fame, Bell was working with

children who were hard of hearing or deaf. His background provided

him with a personal perspective on the power of speech and

communication. His father and grandfather were researchers and experts

in the field of voice and speech elocution mechanics. Alexander

was their apprentice as they taught speech to people with hearing

loss. The need to communicate with his mother, Eliza Grace, and

his wife, Mabel, (who were both deafened by childhood illness) was

the impetus that caused him to focus his attention on experimenting

with sound and studying the physiology of speech. He began his

educational career in the US in 1870 teaching oral speech to students

with hearing loss and opened a school in Boston to train other teachers

in 1872. Living and working with the impact of hearing loss on

communication sparked Bell’s interest in the principles of acoustics

and speech, which led to experiments in transmitting sound waves

over wire. His pursuit to create a solution for hearing loss would ultimately

lead to the creation of one of the most important inventions

of all time: the telephone.

On March 7, 1986, Alexander Graham Bell was awarded U.S. Patent

No. 174,465 for his "electrical speech machine" -- his name for

the first telephone. Bell’s contributions to science and communication

did not end with the telephone as he held over 18 patents for his

work in communications. His need to help people with hearing loss

led to the invention of an audiometer, a device used to measure a

person’s ability to hear sounds of different frequencies (pitches) and

volume (loudness). He believed that to understand and treat hearing

loss, you must be able to measure a person’s ability to hear. Using

the information obtained from the hearing assessment, manufacturers

were able to design hearing aids for an individual’s unique loss

of hearing.

In 1920, Bell Telephone Laboratories’ engineers devised a sound

measurement unit to quantify audio levels in telephone circuits and

measure the transmission efficiency of telephone facilities. They

named it “bel” in honor of their founder, Alexander Graham Bell.

The unit used to measure the loudness of sound is a decibel, which

is one-tenth of a bel. The decibel scale helps us measure the softest

sound we can detect but also noise loud enough to damage hearing.

Hearing as our “social sense” is used to communicate with others.

Losing the ability to detect and interpret sound is harmful to your

health and wellbeing by isolating you, increasing loneliness, and accelerating

the loss of your memory and cognitive functions. When

concern arises about the health of your hearing, an audiometer will

be used to assess your ability to hear pitch and loudness. This information

will be used to create a graphical representation (audiogram)

of the softest sound that you can detect at each frequency, which is

used to determine the most effective treatment for your hearing loss.

Often the encouragement to have your hearing evaluated comes

from a family member or friend. Remember that like Alexander

Graham Bell, they are motivated by their need to communicate and

connect with you.

Summer Injuries: American Mobile

Physical Therapy Can Help

By Valter Cipollari, American Mobile Physical Therapy

Summer is synonymous with outdoor activities, from swimming,

hiking, playing sports, or gardening; these activities are great for

physical health and mental well-being but can come with a risk for

injuries. Understanding common injuries and how PT aids recovery

is crucial for staying active and healthy throughout the season.

Common Summer Injuries:

Sprains and strains occur when sudden movements, overexertion,

and uneven surfaces lead to sprains (ligament injuries) and strains

(muscle or tendon injuries). Symptoms include pain, swelling,

bruising, and limited mobility.

Fractures many causes include high-impact activities such as biking,

skateboarding, and contact sports, which can result in broken

bones. Symptoms of these types of injuries include tense pain,

swelling, bruising, and inability to move the affected area.

Heat-related illnesses happen when someone has been exposed

to high temperatures and has not properly hydrated. This can lead

to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion or

heat stroke are dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, and even

loss of consciousness.

Overuse injuries occur when repetitive motions in activities like

running, swimming, or tennis lead to overuse injuries such as tendinitis.

Some symptoms of overuse injuries injuries include persistent

pain, swelling, and reduced performance.

Here’s how physical therapy can help you in the prevention,

treatment, and rehabilitation of summer injuries:

Pain management techniques such as ice or heat therapy, electrical

stimulation, and manual therapy to help alleviate pain and reduce

inflammation.

Restore mobility with tailored exercises designed to improve range

of motion, strength, and flexibility. For example, stretching and

strengthening exercises help recover from sprains and strains, and

improved mobility enables individuals to return to daily activities

and sports faster.

Prevent future injuries with education on proper body mechanics,

posture, and techniques to avoid re-injury. We will provide a customized

conditioning and strengthening program that will help to

enhance overall physical fitness and resilience.

Heat-related illness recovery requires gradual reconditioning and

hydration strategies to help patients safely return to activity after

heat-related illnesses. PT can implement cooling techniques, and

provide environmental control education.

When you choose American Mobile Physical Therapy, you will

receive a customized treatment plan based on your specific injury

and needs, ensuring effective recovery. You will also receive regular

assessments by the same physical therapist to help track your progress

so that treatment plans can be adjusted accordingly. The best

part is that we are a mobile therapy service meaning WE COME

that's comfortable and convenient for you! No waiting in clinics or

traffic means more time for swimming, gardening, vacationing, and

While summer is a time for fun and physical activity, it is essential

to be mindful of potential injuries. American Mobile Physical

Therapy is here to offer comprehensive care that not only aids in

EDUCATION

Preparing for a New School Year:

Why Should You Consider Preschool for Your Child?

By Tori Smith, Ardent Preschool

As the new school year approaches, parents often find themselves

contemplating the best educational path for their young children.

Among the various options available, preschool stands out as a

critical stage in early childhood education. The benefits of enrolling

your child in preschool extend beyond basic academics, laying a robust

foundation for lifelong learning and development. Here’s why

investing in an early childhood education experience at Ardent Preschool

& Daycare is a step you can’t afford to miss for your child.

Social and Emotional Development

One of the most significant benefits of preschool is the opportunity

it provides for social and emotional development. Children interact

with their peers, learn to share, cooperate, and resolve conflicts.

These interactions are crucial for developing empathy and understanding

the dynamics of friendships. Additionally, Ardent teaches

core Christian values and character traits. These values become a

foundation that teaches children to be respectful and well-mannered,

both towards their peers and adults.

Math and Literacy Foundation

We believe that literacy starts at infancy. We begin by introducing

our youngest infants to their letters and numbers. These foundational

skills are essential for academic success in later years. Through

songs, stories, games, and hands-on activities, children learn to recognize

letters, numbers, shapes, and patterns. They begin to understand

the basics of counting, problem-solving, and phonics, which

are critical for reading and mathematical proficiency. Early exposure

to these concepts in a structured yet fun environment sets the

stage for future academic achievements.

Learning Independence

Preschool is a perfect environment for children to start learning independence.

Away from the immediate comfort of home, children are

encouraged to take responsibility for simple tasks, such as putting

away toys, washing hands, and making choices. These experiences

help children develop a sense of autonomy and self-reliance. Learning

to take care of themselves and their belongings fosters self-confidence

and prepares them for more structured settings in the future.

Learning How to Function in a Group Learning Environment

At Ardent, children learn how to function in a group learning environment,

which is a vital skill for their educational journey. They

participate in group activities, take turns, and collaborate on projects.

This group dynamic teaches children the importance of teamwork

and communication. Moreover, being part of a classroom

community helps children understand their role within a group and

the impact of their actions on others. These experiences are fundamental

in shaping responsible and socially aware individuals.

Kindergarten Readiness

One of the primary goals at Ardent is to prepare children for kindergarten.

Our program is designed to introduce children to the structure

and expectations of a formal school environment. This includes

developing fine motor skills, math skills, and literacy fundamentals.

Children also learn to follow routines, listen to instructions,

and transition between activities smoothly. These skills are crucial

for a successful transition to kindergarten, where a higher level of

independence and focus is required.

Ardent Preschool & Daycare offers a wealth of benefits that go beyond

academic learning. We are preparing children for success socially,

emotionally and academically. We view the early education

that Ardent offers as an investment into the future of your child. Set

them up for a path of lifelong success, schedule a tour at a location

near you soon!

Mee Phillip and Shellie Smith

By Phillip and Shellie Smith as told to Bob Druckman

Phillip was born and raised in Huntsville. He met Shellie, who was

born and raised in South East California, in a little town called Holtville

after transferring to Yuma Arizona in the Marine Corps. Phillip

graduated from Grissom High School in 1984, and American Military

University in 2014 with a BA in Homeland Security. Shellie

graduated from Holtville High School in Holtville California, and

was a junior Escrow Officer with a title company. Phillip and Shellie

met at church when she came to visit her brother who attended

the same congregation as Phillip. Being divorced, Phillip was on

his final tour in the Marines. They soon became friends and started

dating, taking their children to various places such as SeaWorld,

Disneyland, and beaches around Southern California. They were

married in 2001 which made for a family of five.

Their oldest, a daughter, is currently serving in the Navy in California.

She has blessed the family with a daughter, and is currently

expecting a son in October. The middle child, a son, is a groundskeeper

at a local golf course in Huntsville. Currently he is unattached.

The youngest, another boy, is married and now resides in

Georgia. He and his wife both served in the Navy and have brought

a baby girl into the world.

Shellie and Phillip moved to Huntsville in 2008, shortly after Phillip’s

retirement from the Marine Corps. After multiple trips around

the world and after visiting over 30 countries, Phillip says that he

likes the friendliness and pace of Huntsville.

Phillip left Huntsville when he joined the Marines in 1985 to

"see the world" and "gain discipline". Phillip admits to having

seen much of the world. “The Marine Corps teaches an individual

to be self-sufficient and to lead. These traits work well

either working for someone or running you own business. The

sense of responsibility taught by the Corps, allows Marines to

accept that "the buck stops here" attitude is necessary for mission

completion.”

Shellie worked for Escrow when she met Phillip, yet when the

bubble popped in the housing market, it made more sense for her

to raise their children as a stay-at-home Mom.

Phillip and Shellie both worked for a SUNMED franchise before

purchasing the one they worked in. For them, it was a way to continue

to help those friends they made, and to be their own bosses.

THC and Terpenes are extracted using Super Critical CO2 and

from the plant. The resulting product is shipped to Florida, where

our in-house PhD Chemist formulates all of the products. Once

the in-house Chemist is happy with the product, it is sent to an

independent third-party testing laboratory. The laboratory's report

is tied to each product through the QR code and lot numbers. This

ensures that what the label claims is what is actually in the product.

But all of this is just ensuring that SUNMED customers and

friends are receiving the highest quality CBD possible.

Phillip is currently reading a series by W.E.B. Griffin titled "The Colonels".

Shellie normally reads a newspaper that is sent to the house.

Our favorite foods differ a little bit with Phillip enjoying meat and

potatoes with his wife enjoying Mexican Cuisine.

When asked who they would invite to dinner they replied “If I could

invite 3 people to dinner it would be my Grandparents said Phillip;

even though that would be four. Shellie said she would invite potential

entrepreneurs.

A message Phillip and Shellie would like to convey to the readers

of South Huntsville Neighbors is that "Our Safety and Quality ensure

a good product. We are not a smoke shop, but a place to come

and receive CBD, and in some cases THC, to help in your lifestyle.

Many people believe in the health benefits of CBD and we look

forward to meeting their needs."

While there are numerous CBD stores out there, SUNMED is a

leader in the industry with consistent quality in their products.

The SUNMED founder was told that CBD would help her Crohn's

disease. After taking CBD for 3 months, she decided it did help

her and started her own business. Quality has always been one of

SUNMED's traits. SUNMED hemp is USDA organically grown

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

How to Identify a High-Quality Stem Cell Center

By Dr. Charles Lee, Regenesis Stem Cell Center

When evaluating a stem cell center, you should look for several

hallmarks of quality. First, The FDA has only cleared your stem

cells, harvested from your bone marrow, minimally manipulated,

and injected in a same-day procedure for use in the United States.

Furthermore, all birth tissue products for other than cosmetic use are

dead tissue pawned off as stem cell treatments; approach facilities

offering to inject these products with skepticism. Other criteria to

consider include:

© Best Version Media

Accreditation and Licensing: Check if the center is accredited and

licensed by relevant regulatory authorities. Accreditation ensures

that the center meets specific quality standards, while licensing indicates

that the center is authorized to provide same-day stem cell

therapy with sedation. Regenesis has such indicia of quality and is a

stem cell center of excellence.

Expertise and Experience: The qualifications and experience of

the physicians at the center are crucial. An experienced, board-certified

regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy physician credentialed

by the state board of medical examiners is the indicia of

quality. This physician should have skills and training in advanced

complex injections. Such skills require years of training and experience

to master. At Regenesis, Dr. Lee has all the advanced training

offered by Interventional Orthobiologics and Orthopedic Medicine

organizations and has done thousands of these procedures since

opening Regenesis in 2014.

Facilities and Equipment: The facility should operate full-time,

five days a week, be clean, well-maintained, and be equipped with

the latest technologies to perform stem cell therapy. At Regenesis,

we maintain a flexible lab, procedure room, and recovery area. Our

flexible lab allows us to process your stem cells and Platelet Rich

Plasma to deliver optimal results. Our medical kit includes a biological

safety hood, gas and heat sterilizers, infrared decontaminant

lights, ultra-low temp freezers, centrifuges, and advanced cell and

platelet counters. In addition, Regenesis maintains a fully equipped

procedure room with vial sign monitors, resuscitation equipment,

plus fluoroscopy and ultrasound to guide harvesting and injecting

your stem cells and platelet concentrates.

Clinical Trials and Patient Registry Research: Check if the facility

participates in clinical trials and research related to stem cell therapy.

Participation indicates that the center is committed to advancing

the field and has the expertise to conduct research. Regenesis

has participated in PTSD, COPD, and Knee Osteoarthritis trials. We

constantly research optimal outcomes from our one, three, and sixmonth

follow-up patient registry data. Such analysis of outcomes is

crucial to optimizing results.

Patient Reviews and Testimonials: Look for patient reviews and

testimonials to see what others say about their experience and outcomes

with the center. Positive reviews can indicate a high level of

patient satisfaction and successful results. Don’t trust anonymous

reviews or paid celebrity spokespersons.

Cost and Candidacy: Based upon a consultation and image review,

the treating physician should draft and review a detailed procedure

plan with you. This plan should include costs and your suitability for

stem cell or PRP therapy. Be wary of being handoff to a hard-sell

“closer.” If the medical staff wants to immediately sign you up for a

procedure you should consider exploring treatment elsewhere.

At Regenesis, we are vested in your care and successful outcome.

Regenerative medicine is our passion, mission, and ministry. Visit

us to experience exceptional care and outcomes.

6 Ways to Update Your Home

By Jill McClure, Resident Decorator, Huntsville Decorating Center

Paint - Paint should be your best friend, it’s one of the least expensive

ways to transform a room or your whole house. Between incorporating

new color trends for an up-to-date look and simply covering

dirty walls & scuffs for a fresh feel, paint is truly transformative.

Always use a high quality paint like Benjamin Moore at Huntsville

Decorating Center, you’ll get better coverage, smooth application, a

higher pigment content and it will hold up over time, which in turn,

will save you money.

• If your home feels dark and dingy, go lighter and brighter. If its

pale and feels boring, opt for rich and saturated hues.

• You don’t have to paint an entire room, try an accent wall or

paint built-in’s, a brick fireplace or a mantle. Painting your interior

doors a different color than the trim can deliver a lot of

style.

• If your kitchen cabinets are in good shape but dated, consider

painting them a color to complement the space instead of replacing

them entirely.

• Think about painting the exterior to boost curb appeal! You can

do minor tweaks by painting the front door, trim and shutters or

go all in and paint the brick.

Cabinet Hardware - Changing out the hardware on cabinets and

doors can make a world of difference and its a budget friendly option.

Brushed gold, matte black and polished chrome will remain

popular in the new year.

Flooring - Replacing your flooring might be one of the pricier options,

but it’s a great investment and will significantly impact the

overall aesthetic of your home. Huntsville Decorating Center has a

wide variety of hardwoods, LVP & tile.

• Replace old, dingy carpet with a new textured style carpet or

add hardwoods.

• If you have dark wood flooring, consider going lighter to make

the space feel larger and more open.

• LVP has become a very popular choice because of its affordability

& durability. Because it’s waterproof, it’s a great choice

for any moisture prone areas like the laundry room, bathrooms

or a finished basement.

Window treatments - Motorized window treatments, woven shades

and drapery panels that add pattern and texture will continue in popularity.

Hunter Douglas is a high quality brand and designer favorite

that is available at Huntsville Decorating Center.

• Replace blinds that are warped or missing slats, drapes that feel

dark and heavy or sun faded shades.

Wallpaper - Wallpaper can add character, act as a piece of art, personalize

your space and pull your color scheme together. Whether

you are looking for colorful or neutral, textured or flat, bold or subtle

there’s certainly an option for everyone. Metallics, large scale prints,

loose patterns, stripes and tone on tone florals or geometrics are on

for 2024

without

the rise for 2024. Huntsville Decorating Center offers a large selection

of wallpaper books & brands, both residential and commercial.

Lighting - Lighting fixtures are one of the most important design

features of a space, it creates a certain mood and ambiance that adds

to the overall decorative appeal of the home. Look for high polished

gold, silver and black finishes, woven and beaded constructed

lighting, semi-flush chandeliers and textured glass globes in the new

year.

• If you don’t have adequate lighting in a space, adding recessed

or wall sconces are great options that feel current.

• Remove lighting that is unnecessary or in odd locations.

• Dimmer switches are key to enhancing your atmosphere, they

make it easy to adjust light levels and offer a wide range of

mood lighting.

Is It Safe to Open a Garage Door

with a Broken Spring?

One of the most critical components of garage door maintenance

is the spring system. These springs are designed to bear

the weight of the garage door and facilitate its smooth operation.

But what happens when spring breaks? Is it safe to open a garage

door with a broken spring? Let's explore this important question.

Understanding Garage Door Springs

The most common garage door springs are torsion springs and

extension springs. Torsion springs are mounted above the garage

door, while extension springs are on either side of the door

tracks. Both types of springs are under extreme tension and play

a vital role in the garage door's functionality.

When spring breaks break, the balance of your garage door is

compromised. This imbalance can lead to various safety hazards

and potential damage to the door.

The Risks of Operating a Garage Door

with a Broken Spring

Personal Injury - Personal injury is the most significant risk

of operating a garage door with a broken spring. Garage doors

are heavy, often weighing several hundred pounds. Without the

support of the spring system, manually lifting the door can be

incredibly dangerous. The door may fall suddenly, potentially

causing severe injuries.

Further Damage to the Door - Attempting to operate a garage door

with a broken spring can lead to further damage. The added strain

on other components, such as tracks, cables, and the opener, can

result in costly repairs. A broken spring often means the door is

incorrectly balanced, causing it to warp or become misaligned.

Strain on the Garage Door Opener - Garage door openers are

designed to work with a balanced door. When spring breaks, the

opener has to work much harder to lift the door. This added strain

can burn out the motor or break other parts of the opener mechanism,

leading to expensive replacements.

What to Do if a Spring Breaks

If you suspect your garage door spring is broken, take immediate

action to prevent injury and further damage. Here are the steps

you should follow:

Do Not Use the Door - Avoid using the garage door entirely. This

includes both manual operation and using the automatic opener.

A broken spring means the door is not safe to operate.

Disconnect the Opener - If your garage door is stuck in an open

or partially open position, disconnect the opener to prevent anyone

from accidentally trying to use it. This step is crucial to

avoid any unexpected movements of the door.

Call a Professional - Contact a professional garage door repair

service immediately. Garage door springs are not a DIY project.

The high tension in these components requires specialized tools

and knowledge to repair safely. Attempting to fix a broken spring

yourself can result in severe injury or further damage.

Conclusion

Opening a garage door with a broken spring is unsafe and should

be avoided. There are significant risks to personal safety and

potential damage to the door and opener. If you experience a

broken spring, immediately contact a garage door technician to

ensure safe and proper repairs.

Have you ever asked yourself “how can I become a better negotiator?”

If yes, you’re in luck, because the answer is simple: all

you need to successfully negotiate on a higher level is to learn the

psychology behind business negotiations.

Mary P. Rowe, a professor at MIT, defines negotiation as “all interactions

between two or more points of view.” When you think about

the psychology behind real estate negotiation, it really means learning

how to navigate diverse perspectives and expectations. Fortunately,

this complex topic can be broken up into more manageable parts. The

following real estate negotiation tactics are a good place to start.

Create Win-Win Scenarios

The most skillful negotiators are those who create win-win scenarios

for both parties in the equation. Just because you are trying to

score a deal, does not mean there’s nothing in it for the seller. For

example, investors hoping to acquire an investment property for a

low price may offer some concessions to the seller, like offering

to cover moving costs. In the big picture, moving costs are a small

expense for investors but could be a large gesture to the seller.

Compromise

Even though you are trying to create a win-win situation, look for

areas you are willing to budge on within the contract. Perhaps you

might offer to clean out the property to knock a few thousand off

the sale price. Or maybe, you want to pay a little more for a quick

closing date. Think through potential areas for compromise before

you sit down at the negotiation table.

Include An Escalation Clause

An escalation clause is typically used when one or more parties

think a home will receive multiple offers. It states that the seller

agrees to pay a certain amount more than the highest offer received.

There will usually be language capping the total sale price,

to ensure investors do not agree to more than they can afford. An

escalation clause should be discussed when negotiating in competitive

markets to help lock down the property for investors.

Negotiate In Person

No one could have predicted how the rise in technology would impact

basic interactions; however, the power of email and texting

Realtor, Keyfinders Group

RE/MAX Alliance

have left a lot to interpret in daily conversation. This is why negotiations

should always be held in person when applicable. A faceto-face

conversation helps make sure everyone is on the same page.

Listen Before Reacting

Always check your ego at the door when entering negotiations and

listen carefully before reacting to any statements. You might be

confident and well-spoken in your negotiations, but that does not

always go for everyone else. Give others a chance to respond fully

before coming up with a counteroffer or moving on.

Focus On the Outcome

Never lose sight of your end goal when negotiating. It can be easy

to get distracted by counter offers or tangents, but remember you

are there for a property.

Similarly, don’t let a few concessions make you lose sight of why

you are there. Let’s say the sellers don’t agree on the closing date

you want, but you still get a great price on the property. While you

may not have gotten everything you wanted, that deal can still

count as a win. After all, you just secured a great deal, didn’t you?

EMERGENCY SERVICES

At Talent Heating and Air Conditioning we

strive to take the confusion out of heating

and air conditioning. Most people aren’t even

sure what they have in their house whether

it’s a gas pack, a split heat pump, a package

heat pump, a split gas, or some other form of

heating and cooling. One of our main goals

of every service call or maintenance or

even install it's to leave the customer feeling

like they truly understand what's going

on with their comfort system.

Most consumers think of their AC as just their thermostat until it’s broke. When it

breaks they'll look around their house and try to find the obvious piece of equipment

this responsible for keeping their house comfortable. The part outside is generally a

condenser whether it's a straight air or heat pump and when their air is out most of

the time they'll find that not running. Most people feel like oh it’s the same problem

as last time or they're not sure what's wrong with it because it's still running.

The problems air conditioners can have are numerous, but they all usually look the

same way. That's where the professionals come in - we can determine why the unit

isn't running, or if the unit isn't running why it isn't keeping up. One of the common

things we hear is "I hope it’s only freon." That couldn't be further from the truth because

freon repairs typically are the most expensive.

Small maintenance issues can also look just as bad as big repairs from the onset.

You'll find your unit not running it's like "ohh man, must be the compressor" - in reality

it could be just a drain line stopped up and a safety switch in your attic preventing

your ceiling from flooding. That's why it's important to use a honest skilled company

to come out and diagnose your issues. Oftentimes small repairs neglected lead to bigger

repairs down the road. The majority of service calls we see during the summer are

just that simple easy solutions waiting on someone honest to come by and take care of

it. That’s why we’re waiving service call fees this summer when you make the repair.

One of the most confusing things about HVAC is all the constant governmental

changes. The biggest change that we've seen recently is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency

Ratio (SEER) rating being changed. The government has come up with a new

rating system that is similar to the old but not quite the same. This new SEER rating

system called SEER 2 is how all new air conditioners are rated. In the past the ratings

on package units and splits were the same, but now government minimums on package

units in the South can be lower than splits. This is not to say that new package

units are less efficient it's just that they aren't being held to the new standards splits

are. To add to the confusion what used to be a 14 SEER package unit is now a 13

SEER package unit and what used to be a 15 here is now 14.3 SEER in a split.

If that just sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo you would be right the most easiest

basic way to understand SEER rating is to think of it as miles per gallon or just

simply efficiency rating which it is. The higher the SEER rating the more power you

can save. Lots and lots of companies will always push you towards buying a higher

seer units and they are more efficient but they cost more.

When making a decision on a new unit you should think about how long you're going

to be in the house and what your plans are for the house. This should help you with

your investment if you're gonna stay in your home going with a higher end unit will

help you save money over time but if you plan on moving in the next year or two then

a high SEER unit isn't gonna show you the return that you made on your investment.

Meticulous And Thorough

On Every Job

Another thing to consider when trying to making a decision between a high SEER

equipment and low SEER equipment is comfort in the home. While some basic systems

do have multiple stages like in the Rudd equipment line other basic systems do

not have multistage equipment. You might be asking yourself, "What does that mean

to me? I just want my air conditioner to cool." Multistage equipment has commonly

been used to make a unit more efficient therefore saving you own power but they can

also have other side effects that make you more comfortable with better air flow balance

and lower humidity.

Some of the things that set Talent Heating and Air Conditioning apart is the fact that

we offer second opinions year round. You might be asking yourself "What is a second

opinion, and why do I need it?" - you may not need it right now. If you have another

company come out and they give you the "heebie jeebies" and you’re just not quite

sure what to believe, you can call us for free. We come out for free and check and see

if what they said is accurate. In some cases it is, but in most cases even if it's accurate

we find a way to save money for the customer.

Another benefit of using Talent Heating and Air Conditioning this summer is we’re

not charging service call fees during regular hours if you make the repair that day. If

we can make the repair and get you taken care of and up and running that saves us

time and money - and it saves you time and money! If you decide to go with a unit

replacement from Talent and Heating and Air Conditioning we offer unique guarantees

in our industry. One of our favorite guarantees is our picture perfect guarantee.

We're going to take pictures of your job and we're going to post them online - our

work speaks for itself. That’s why we have a 10 year warranty on almost every unit

we put in, and two year warranties on repairs.

Baby it’s Hot Outside!! By Cheryl Knighten, Founder Sozo Digital Media

The weather is warming up here in North Alabama and we have

already seen temperatures reach the 90’s! In fact, according to the

Farmer’s Almanac and NASA, we are heating up for another record-breaking

heatwave.

Last year they predicted that the summer of 2023 would break

heat records, and they were quite right… in fact, 2023’s summer

proved to be the hottest summer on record since the beginning of

keeping weather records began in 1880! This information is quoted

directly from scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies

(GISS). According to The National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA), there is a one-in-three chance that 2024

will be warmer than 2023, and a 99% chance it will rank among the

five warmest on record!”

The significance of this information effects everyone. From property

managers, hospitals and homeowners to HVAC companies who

will be called upon when the heat index rises into the 100’s!! The

issue we run into with temperatures that hit record highs is the strain

it puts on the utility companies. Hurricane season just kicked off on

June 1st, and the storms that we have witnessed lately may bring

power outages across Alabama.

With these factors in mind, it will be wise for HVAC businesses to

be insured for all possibilities! As a business owner you often think

that having Workmen’s Comp and General Liability are all that you

need. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

To cover your business, employees and protect your customers, here are

the recommendations we offer:

General Liability - provides coverage against a variety of potential

risks, from bodily injury to property damage.

Workmen’s Compensation - crucial to protect both employers and employees,

against the financial burden of workplace injuries.

Commercial Auto Insurance - generally covers the following:

• Liability Insurance

• Collision Coverage

• Comprehensive Coverage

• Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Protection

• Medical Payments/Personal Injury (PIP)

Equipment Breakdown Insurance - protects against the financial impact

of repairs or replacements required due to mechanical or electrical failure.

Professional Liability Insurance - referred to as EOA, or errors and

omissions. This protects your business from claims of misconduct or negligence.

Equipment Interruption Insurance - ensures financial stability should

there be an interruption in your ability to conduct day-to-day operations.

Cyber Liability Insurance - protects you from critical risks and financial

losses based on cyber incidents, and scams.

Installation Floater Insurance - provides coverage against the risks of

theft, loss or damage.

Meet James Black, Sales Consultant Mercedes-Benz of Huntsville

By Bob Druckman, Publisher South Huntsville Neighbors

James and his wife Cassie hail from Colorado Springs,

CO. Both James and Cassie have what is known as a

“Servant's Heart” They are the parents of 8 children, 6 of

their own and 2 that they took in from James sister. “She

was having a rough go of it and we felt we needed to step

up. The children needed a stable environment and we are

able to provide that for them.”

James career has taken some interesting turns, but his

love of auto sales has never left. He was the number one

sales person for Carnival Cruise Lines, dabbled (and still

does) in agriculture, holding interests in Columbia and

Chile through his work at GivLife (https://givlife.com).

As James tells us, “It is a tool for farmers to improve

the health of their soil and increase crop yields using a

proprietary microbe blend.”

Cassie and James have fallen in love with Huntsville.

Cassie is a stay at home mom, but has a degree in HVAC

systems, restores and sells old furniture and has her own

You Tube channel about paint pouring.

26 SOUTH HUNTSVILLE NEIGHBORS Submit Content at:

One thing I was able to glean from James is his passion for Mercedes-Benz.

“In 1984 my grandfather bought 2 Mercedes –Benz

and it became ingrained in me that I should always get and work

for the best.”

What is your favorite Mercedes- Benz?

Definitely the E-Class. Its business features, like the ability to conference

call is a wonderful feature. Its quietness is above and beyond

most vehicles on the market today.

What does the Mercedes star mean to you?

Mercedes – Benz embodies safety, luxury and quality. The driver has

a comfort level with the quietness and the quality whether it’s the A-

Class or S-Class. It’s the drivers happy place just being in the vehicle.

Let’s discuss your view of the client experience.

I view sales as a service. I am in the position of trust, but I have to

earn that trust every moment of the sales process. I have a mindset

of service and understand that I have to build those relationships. It’s

my privilege to serve the client. I always look at the whole picture

and educate the client throughout the whole process.

What would you like the readers of South Huntsville

Neighbors to know about you?

While we are new to the community, we are happy to be here. With

8 children it’s important that we integrate ourselves into the area. We

want to be a resource for what we do. Working at Mercedes – Benz

of Huntsville allows me to do that.
