Despite Troon being synonymous with golf, football was the first
organised sport in Troon. As far back as 1875 there was a Troon
Portland football team, and there is history of Troon Academicals,
Troon Rangers and Troon Athletic playing in the town before all
football was suspended during the period of the Second World
War. After the war, Junior Football reformed and Troon Juniors
were established in 1946.
In 1977 the term “Juniors” was dropped from the club title. From
then on, it was simply known as Troon Football Club.
In the 1985–86 season, promotion to the First Division of the
Ayrshire League was attained & we reached the semi-finals of the
League Cup. Troon F.C. languished in the Second Division of
Ayrshire Junior Football until 1997 when after a long spell of
mediocrity, Manager John Redmond led the club to the Ayrshire
Second Division Championship & promotion to Ayrshire Division 1.
Troon’s Portland Park is famous in world football as it has been
visited by some of the world’s best players throughout the years.
Thanks to our seaside location, proximity to Glasgow (and
Hampden Park) and having a world class hotel on our doorstep in
Troon’s Marine Hotel, Troon Football Club has long been the ideal
location for top teams to visit.
The world’s greatest player Pelé was a guest in 1966 (left) with his
Brazil team in a pre-World Cup training camp. Eusebio was at
Portland in 1969 with his Benfica side and Jock Stein’s Lisbon Lions
played here the same year.
England were regular visitors in the 1970s and 80s for training
camps before big tournaments, as were Rangers in the 80 and 90s.
Fergus McCann’s first ever match as Celtic owner was in a preseason
friendly at Portland Park. Even more recently we have
played host to Aberdeen, Hibernian, Kilmarnock & Birmingham
City, which is a reflection on the standard of our ground.
In 2010 the Kirkwood family took an interest in Troon and were
appointed on to the committee of the club. Jim Kirkwood Snr. was
appointed as Chairman, Alasdair Kirkwood as club Treasurer and
Jimmy Kirkwood Jnr. as Assistant Manager under John Redmond.
The fortunes of the club improved almost immediately as an
improved professionalism and business nous saw investment in the
club infrastructure. A renovated and expanded social club
at Portland Park became a real asset to the club, and investment
on the playing surface itself allowed an immediate improvement in
the style of play encouraged by the new coaching staff.
Jimmy Kirkwood took over as Manager in March 2011 and an
overhaul of the playing squad commenced with an emphasis on
youth development & attractive football, which very much remains
the ethos to this day. Results were erratic to begin with, but the
improvement was remarkable and a title push was well underway
in season 2011–12 with the team missing out on the second
promotion spot by one point. The club went one better in 2012–13,
securing second place with weeks to spare after a season long title
battle with Kilwinning Rangers and promotion back to the Super
League was assured. Further investment off the park saw upgraded
dressing rooms, an outside area beside the social club and
expanded terracing areas on the clubhouse side.
In season 2013–14 the club were crowned the Super League First
Division Champions (with a record points total), Ayrshire Cup
winners and were also West of Scotland Cup finalists. In early
2020, clubs voted to leave the Juniors in favour of joining the
Scottish Football Pyramid.
As part of our push to become an SFA licensed club, which would
see us take part in the senior Scottish Cup each season against the
cream of Scottish football, floodlights were erected to bring
Portland Park up to standard. Alongside our new 7 a side astroturf
training facility, the club is improving all the time and has never
been in a better position to push into the future.

of a pitch side advertising board.
