Side Trip:
All indications are that this will be a
great year of live shows on the stage of
the Okoboji Summer Theatre.
My husband and I attended a preopening
night gala Monday on the theatre
grounds and were
treated to a sneak
peek of what the season
holds. We heard
a selection or two
from each of the musicals
— “Leader of
the Pack,” “Freaky Friday,”
“My Way” and
“The Music Man.”
With a schedule of
seven shows, having
four of them be musicals
tells you the
depth of musical talent
in the group.
The season opens with “Leader of the
Pack: The Ellie Greenwich Musical,” which
you can read about in this issue.
Ellie Greenwich was a songwriter of the
’60s, with her work recorded by a wide variety
of artists including The Ronettes, The
Shangri-Las, the Beach Boys and Ike and
Tina Turner.
In keeping with the ’60s vibe, OST’s
gala carried a “Let’s Get Groovy” theme.
Some patrons dressed the part in miniskirts,
fashion boots, headbands and large
colorful prints. The menu included, among
other things, fondue, Swedish meatballs,
bacon-wrapped Spam, finger sandwiches
and fruit kebabs. Door prizes were jars of
Cheez-Whiz and cans of Spam. Table decor
included vinyl 45s and vases of daisies.
The gala was hosted under the awning
in front of the theatre on the hottest, muggiest
day of the season thus far. I far preferred
that weather to the thunderstorms
and rain showers every day of the previous
week, so no complaints from me.
The preview night was a fun way to kick
off and build enthusiasm for the season.
Don’t miss out — get your tickets now.
Rock your way through
Independence Day
Live at the Lake offers three straight nights of concerts
Preservation Plaza is turning up
the volume for the Fourth of
July weekend.
Starting with local favorite The
Rolling Stoners on Independence
Day, there will be free concerts on
three consecutive nights with a
fourth show in the Roof Garden to
put a nice bow on the holiday weekend.
“Actually this winter we met with
the staff and asked, hey, are we all
up for this? It’s four straight days of
concerts!” said Chris Swanson, marketing
director for Historic Arnolds
Park, Inc. “With how the holiday fell
on a Thursday this year and already
having booked the Sunday show in
the Roof Garden it just fell together
nicely to have it this way.”
The Rolling Stoners kick things at
7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 4, and have
been a mainstay on the stage for several
years.
“There a few bands that no matter
what we love to have them all the
time and the Rolling Stoners is one.
People love them and always are
asking to have them back,” Swanson
said. “When you have a catalog of
music like the Rolling Stones do, it’s
a genre of music that so many different
age groups knew and it’s one of
those bands that you’ve heard a song
of theirs no matter how old you are.”
The following night, 7:30 p.m.
Friday, July 5, will be the return of
another familiar act to the outdoor
stage, The Trip.
The California-based cover band
performs a variety of hits crossing
between country and rock ‘n’ roll
with ease and thoroughly entertaining
the audience.
“They’re fabulous entertainers and
we’ve had them here multiple times.
The crowd loves them,” Swanson
said.
Audience members may think
they’re going through a bit of déjà vu
at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 6, when
it’s time for the 90s Rock Show to
take the stage.
That’s because the lead singer does
double duty with The Trip — both
groups tend to travel together doing
gigs across the country.
“They just bring the good ’90s rock
music that we all know whether it’s
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Goo Goo
Dolls, Blink 182, bands like that,”
Swanson said.
Throw in some Pearl Jam, REM,
Smashing Pumpkins and so much
more will have the crowd rocking all
night.
“So we’re looking at three days
of pretty awesome rock ’n’ roll style
music from the ’70s through the ’90s
and then Sunday we bring in the
Neil Diamond tribute,” Swanson
said. “He was here last year and it
was one of the best shows of the
summer in the Roof Garden.”
That show is I Am He Said: A Celebration
of Neil Diamond and is set
for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 7 in the
Roof Garden Ballroom
That will be a ticketed show with
general admission priced at $29 in
advance or $34 the day of the show.
A great way to cap off a festive few
days of live music in the Iowa Great
Lakes. F
DON’T
MISS
OUT!
MYRNA WAGNER | STAFF WRITER
FEEL-GOOD MUSICAL
LEADS WAY INTO SEASON
You may not have heard the
name Ellie Greenwich, but
you’ve certainly heard her
music.
Put a stack of 45s on the record
player and flip through them — “Be
My Baby,” “Why Do Lovers Break
Each Other’s Heart,” “Doo Wah
Diddy Diddy,” “Hanky Panky,”
“Chapel of Love,” “Da Doo Ron Ron,”
“Leader of the Pack.”
The list could go on and on.
“Leader of the Pack: The Ellie
Greenwich Musical” is a musical recap
of the decade of the ’60s, with hit
songs by a variety of artists, created
by the same songwriter.
Okoboji Summer Theatre’s 2024
season opens this week with this
song- and dance-filled number that
showcases an extremely talented
group of Stephens College students.
The production is nearly two
hours of continuous music and
movement masterfully brought to
life by director and choreographer
Bernard Monroe, who also serves as
OST’s artistic director.
The cast doesn’t miss a beat as they
transition from song to song, following
young Ellie’s life as she pursues a
songwriting career.
Ever-changing lights, dozens of
costume changes, upbeat music and
dance moves reflective of the era
come together for an ideal start to
the season.
Kylie Howard fills the title role of
Ellie Greenwich. She is an adorable
blonde, bright-eyed and optimistic,
filled with dreams and ambition.
She progresses through love and loss,
survives it all and comes out stronger
at the end.
Though Howard has the title role,
the show includes many other great
parts. Ellie’s partners in the Jiveettes,
Mickey (Mallory Womeldorff) and
Shelly (Olivia Evans), are talented
performers. Their dance and voice
training is apparent and appreciated.
Jesamine Katzman is perfectly suited
to her role as performer Darlene
Love. She’s great early in the first
act with “Wait Til My Bobby Comes
Home” and is even better toward the
close of the second act with “River
Deep, Mountain High.”
A big surprise to open Act II is
Carly Cramer. She fills a small role
in the beginning of the show as Ellie’s
mom, but she shows up in a big
way for the second act with the songs
“Keep It Confidential,” “The Look of
Love” and “I Can Hear Music.”
Her voice and musical interpretation
are remarkable.
Wyatt Munster plays Jeff Barry, the
guy Ellie meets after arriving in New
York and proclaims “Today I Met the
Guy I’m Gonna Marry.” Munster and
the male cast members nail it for
“Doo Wah Diddy Diddy” and “Hanky
Panky.”
Ellie and Jeff have fun banter reciting
song titles, artists and years. They
seemed good together — until they
weren’t.
Ellie’s heartbreak is obvious as she
goes through their breakup. Devin
Michael Leming plays record producer
Gus Sharkey, about the only
person in the cast who doesn’t sing
and dance.
Other members of the company
all contribute in significant ways to
the success of the show. They include
Wyatt Logan, Hugh Paul, Isaiah
Bussey, Duncan Elder, Sydnee Sisk,
Kaley Sikora, Morgan Siegel, Chloe
OST debuts
with showcase
of the
1960s
Anderson and Keira Anderson.
Lighting choices utilize the scrim,
spotlights, backlights and subtle
mood lighting. Nicely presented by
lighting designer Savannah Bell.
Costumes cover a wide range —
dresses from the period, pedal pushers,
black leather, plaid sport coats,
Christmas dresses, glitzy evening
wear, wedding attire, and for the finale,
everyone in black aside from Ellie.
The number and speed of costume
changes was impressive. Hats off to
Ashley Harrison and Ethan Hosak for
their great work.
The set is brilliantly simple, featuring
two oversize album covers with
black and white photos of the era in
front of a constantly changing scrim.
Credit to Nathan Lee for the set design.
Music offstage is provided by
Richard Bieber (piano), Greg Forney
(drums), Tim Schumacher (guitar),
Anna Petersen (reeds) and Greg
Tritle (bass).
While “Leader of the Pack” may not
be a show with name recognition, the
Sheldon’s Village Northwest Unlimited
hosts celebration July 3
Village Northwest Unlimited is
ready to get a head start on the
Fourth of July.
Their annual Village Northwest
Unlimited Independence Day Celebration
will take place this year
starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 3.
This is a celebration with a history.
Since 1979, Village Northwest
Unlimited has been hosting a free
Independence Day Celebration on
their campus in Sheldon as a way to
give back to the local communities.
The events for the evening will
kickoff at 5 p.m. with the opening of
the food booths, and there will be a
lot of options to choose from.
They usually have a variety of food
booths. Last year, they had Pizza
Ranch, Tacos Torres, Chix Chicken &
Waffles and Fat Kid Filly’s. They also
had a lemonade and barbecue stand.
After eating some delicious treats
participants can join in the rest of
the fun planned for the evening.
Traditionally they had many
activities planned for all ages from
an art bus to fire trucks and horse
drawn wagon rides, which they have
done in the past. Last year, VNU also
set up carnival games, face painting
and had a balloon artist.
At 7 p.m. the Big Time Grain Co.
is going to take to the stage for a
free concert. Big Time Grain Co. is a
country band based in the Midwest.
The event is one that is meant to
bring the community together to
have fun and to celebrate something
all Americans have in common.
