It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Darwin
Science Summer School. We are very much
looking forward to having you here at Shrewsbury
UK as you take part in what will be an exciting
educational experience.
During your stay you will learn all about
Charles Darwin - both his story and his work
and legacy to the present day as one of the most
significant scientists of all time. Dr Morgan,
our Head of Biology, has put together a course
programme that will be challenging and fun.
This will be delivered in class and through
educational visits locally and further afield to
Chester, Oxford and London.
At all times we will have an excellent pastoral
team working to give you the best levels of
care. Under the leadership and care of Mr
Farmer, we want you to feel that you are at
home - comfortable and happy. In many
respects, provision has been modelled to
follow our boarding rhythms and routines
during the School year - we want to give you
opportunities to sample and to enjoy what that
is like. I would encourage you to get stuck into
everything on offer!
It just remains for me to repeat how excited I
am to be welcoming you to the Darwin Science
Summer School - and to Shrewsbury UK.
Message from the
Darwin Science
Course Lead
I’ve created the Darwin Science Course to be
interactive, practical, varied and academically
ambitious. As we say here at Shrewsbury,
it will be “serious fun”!
I’m joined by a team of highly qualified and
experienced teachers: Dr Case, Mr Turney
and Mr Jones, together with some wonderful
assistants who have just completed their
Biology A- levels.
Lab sessions will be in the Darwin Building,
which is dedicated to Biology and which boasts
world-leading facilities and equipment - like
high quality microscopes, lab apparatus for
genetics and microbiology and a stunning
natural history collection. We also have two
full-time technicians in support.
You’ll be in one of four classes and so have
fantastic levels of individual supervision. There
will be two or three lab sessions a day and these
will be complemented by a series of full-day
or half-day trips: for fieldwork and to visit key
historical and scientific locations.
We’ll also have an overnight stay near London
so we can properly explore two sites of global
importance: The Natural History Museum and
Darwin’s adult home, Down House.
I have had so much fun in the process of
writing the course and I can’t wait to share it
with you.
Torin Morgan,
Fire Procedure
On arrival we will make you aware of the procedure
in the event of a fire and we will hold a fire drill.
What to do if you discover a fire whilst in the building:
Leave the building raising the alarm.
Do not collect any belongings as you leave.
If possible make sure that doors and windows to the room where the fire is
discovered are closed.
Only tackle a fire with an extinguisher if it is safe to do so - do not place yourself at any risk.
Assemble outside the building at the designated location.
Do not attempt to re-enter the building.
If you hear the fire alarm:
The fire alarm is a continuous sounding of bells or sirens.
If practical close doors and windows as you leave.
Leave the building and assemble at the designated assembly point.
Do not stop to collect personal belongings.
Do not use the lift; it could stop without warning between floors.
If you are disabled or unable to use the stairs, move to the top of a staircase and ask for someone
to inform the Fire Service that you are awaiting rescue and for someone to remain with you.
Assemble outside the building at a safe distance and await further instructions. Do not attempt
to re-enter.
access the facilities for personal activities
including communication and recreational
use. Personal use should never compromise
availability for academic use.
The internet is to be used in a manner which
is consistent with the Summer School’s
standards of professional business conduct
and as part of a student’s academic research.
You must not view, retrieve, download
or share any offensive material. Offensive
material includes, but is not limited to,
content that is abusive, racist, considered to
be of an extreme or terrorist related nature,
sexist, homophobic, any form of bullying,
pornographic, defamatory or criminal activity.
Use of the internet in this way is a serious
breach of discipline and may constitute a
serious criminal offence.
The Summer School’s internet facilities
and computing resources must not be used
knowingly to break the law. Use of any
School resources for illegal activity is grounds
for immediate discipline and the Summer
School will co-operate with any legitimate law
enforcement agency.
Students should not knowingly use the
Summer School’s network facilities to disable
or overload any computer system or network,
or to circumvent any system intended to
protect the security of themselves or other
pupils or staff. This includes downloading,
installing or attempting to use VPN software.
Students should not download or view
material that is libellous, unlawful or
inappropriate in any way, i.e. graphic images,
sound files, or music.
The Summer School has a firewall in place to
ensure the safety and security of the School’s
networks. Additional devices may also be
installed in the future to further protect
these networks. Any student who attempts
to disable, defeat or circumvent any School
security facility will be subject to immediate
disciplinary proceedings.
The blue gates at the main entrance to the School on Ashton Road (between
Churchill’s and Rigg’s), named after Revd Henry Moss, Headmaster 1866-1908.
A former pupil of Shrewsbury School
The egg-shaped pond in the Moser Quad. It commemorates E. Oliver, who
combined the roles of caretaker and groundsman, including the care of the school
horse, between 1882 and 1932. In this area he had at one time created an eggshaped
lawn, always known as Oliver’s Egg.
The Headmaster’s study (attached to AH).
Stone figures on the front wall of the Moser Library. They are copies of the
originals which still stand on the Old Schools in the town. ‘Philomathes’
represents the new boy coming to the School seeking learning and ‘Polymathes’ is
the boy leaving the School filled with knowledge. The Greek inscription translates
as, “If you are a lover of learning you will be a learned man.”
present position in 1932. On the School Wall are carved the names of boys who
distinguished themselves in sport.
Grown from a seedling from the Sidney oak at Penshurst Place and planted in
front of the Main School Building to commemorate the Fourth Centenary of the
birth of Sir Philip Sidney on 30th November 1954.
Top Schools (Prep / Homework)
The 3.5-mile whole school cross-country race, originally around Farmer Tucks’
fields in the Meole Brace area of Shrewsbury. It is believed to be the oldest crosscountry
running race in the world, dating back to the early 1830s. Although
the route has changed somewhat over the years (it moved to Attingham Park in
2018), The Tucks has been run by the whole school every year since it first began.
