sells for $4m, 

breaking 

records 

NEW HIGH: A Halton St home has sold for $4 million – a new record for Strowan, and the highest price paid for a property at auction in Christchurch 

this year. 

A HALTON ST home has sold 

for $4 million, the highest price 

ever for a property in Strowan. 

It is also the most expensive 

property to sell at auction in 

Christchurch this year. 

The five-bedroom, twobathroom 

home was bought by a 

Canterbury family, who had been 

looking for a year for their next 

home, OneRoof reported. 

They fought off four other 

local buyers in Harcourts 

Gold’s auction room on 

Thursday, including two 

who actively bid on it. 

A vendor bid of $2.5 

million opened the 

auction, which went up in 

mainly $25,000 to $50,000 

increments.

said once the home was 

announced on the market 

at $3.8m, just two buyers 

battled it out. 

The sale price exceeded 

the vendors’ expectations 

by $200,000. 

“The bids were relatively 

large and strong,”

The $4m sale price topped 

Strowan’s previous record price 

of $3.76 million, paid at auction 

last November for a 1920s home 

on Normans Rd. 

Morrison told OneRoof the 

Halton St house was a standout. 

“It’s the sort of home that pops 

up on the market and buyers go, 

‘Jeez, we’ve got to secure this’. 

That sort of home you jump on.”

Kathryn Picton-Warlow had been 

working with the buyers for 12 

months, searching for the ideal 

family home. 

The buyers were moving 

from the country into the city 

and were looking for a home 

with space, which Halton St 

offered.

THE SPCA is calling on dog 

and cat lovers to enter their animals 

in the organisation’s Pets of 

the Year 2025 calendar competition. 

This year New Zealand’s largest 

animal charity has two calendar 

categories, cat and dog, 

said the SPCA’s chief executive 

Todd Westwood. 

‘‘This is a chance to put 

your pet photography skills to 

use, and capture your furry 

friend’s fabulous side. Or maybe 

you have a gem already on your 

camera,’’ Westwood said. 

‘‘While the top 12 fundraisers 

will be our monthly stars, 

any pet profile which raises 

more than $150 will be guaranteed 

a spot inside the calendar.’’ 

Every dollar raised as part of 

the Pets of the Year competition 

goes directly into funding the 

SPCA’s work. 

‘‘As your pet’s photo generates 

donations, sick, injured and 

vulnerable animals around New 

Zealand will get the help they

Boys’ High aim to capitalise on form 

while St Bede’s strive for home win

CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High 

School will look to keep their 

good form rolling against St 

Bede’s on Saturday. 

Boys’ High have piled on the 

points in their last two games, 

beating Selwyn Combined 62-0 

and Timaru Boys’ 61-0 in the 

Miles Toyota Premiership. 

They sit third on the ladder, 

one point behind St Thomas 

and five behind leader Nelson 

College. 

Head coach Rhys Archibald 

said their form wasn’t down to 

any magic formula – they’ve 

just been at their best after an 

opening-round loss to Nelson. 

“To be honest, the last four 

games we’ve played, I just think 

that we’ve probably proven to be 

the better team,” he said. 

“Like (Selwyn) on Saturday, 

they’ve got some fine players out 

there, but we’ve just got a little 

bit more to work with than what 

they have.” 

St Bede’s head coach Kurt 

Paterson agreed his side have 

their work cut out for them, but 

believes they can spring an upset. 

“We’ll have to play well, but we

ANZAC Day 25th April 2024 

In honour of those who 

have served and those 

who paid the supreme 

sacrifice with their lives. 

Every year, Oaklands Te 

Kura o Ōwaka is proudly 

represented by the Head 

Students. As part of the 

service, the ākonga lay a 

wreath. 

This year, we were 

honoured to read ‘In 

Flanders Fields’ by 

Lieutenant-Colonel 

John McRae. 

Our Bike Track is complete! 

We do have some further markings to be completed to ensure students can move onto the field. Our 

students have been enjoying running around the track and it is great to see so many students out and 

about exercising. 

We appreciate the CCC Bike Safety personnel who have checked all our bikes for safety and we now 

have a list of some bikes that will need some minor repairs. We also have a small number of new bikes 

to purchase to complete our fleet of bikes. Bike in Schools have organised 50 new helmets which we are 

waiting for delivery. The Bikes in Schools programme provides funding to support the purchase of bikes. 

This programme ensures all students have access to a bike during school hours. During school time 

students will be using these bikes. 

Year 7 Glentui Camp 

From the 8th-10th of May, Year 7 students attended 

camp at Glentui. 

Day 1 saw students facing a tough climb 1047m up Mount 

Richardson. Many parts of the climb were steep, narrow and 

muddy. It was great to see all students push themselves out 

of their comfort zone and work on building resilience. 

While many students made it to the top, what the teachers 

loved seeing was the kindness and support students showed 

each other throughout the climb, with speeches of motivation 

and even creating a runway at the top of the mountain to 

celebrate others’ success. 

The poem was read with 

such confidence and 

emotion. 

This year was 

particularly significant 

as it marks the 100 year 

commemoration tribute 

to the Halswell War 

Memorial. 

It was wonderful to see 

the community at this 

event and so many of 

our ākonga/students 

involved in community 

organisations such as 

Guides, Scouts and 

St Johns. 

Wednesday evening saw students get creative in the Oakland’s got talent show. Many students again 

stepped out of their comfort zones and showed off their skills and talents. While the head students took 

the victory with their imitation of their teachers it was great to see so many other amazing talents such 

as rubix cube, card games, and acting out our first day of camp. 

Thursday started with two special birthday celebrations for Mikkel and Tania. Surprised with cake and a 

song before students started their busy day completing a rotation of four activities. 

Friday started with a late start for students after a tiring two days. While teachers and parents were 

cleaning and packing up, students spent their morning in the games room, continuing their ping pong 

and air hockey competitions, while also learning new card games and having a go at twister. 

The Glentui camp scavenger hunt gave students an opportunity to explore the entirety of the camp. 

From having to walk up and down 200 steps, trying honey sap from a tree, making a boat to float down 

the river, to getting creative with their team and making words with their bodies using all members of 

their groups.

Frugal Swift Hybrid an engaging drive 

MISERLY FUEL economy has 

underpinned the success of the 

last three generations of the 

Suzuki Swift 5-door hatch, with 

the hybrid variant the thriftiest of

According to combined fuel 

consumption tests, the Swift 

Hybrid’s 4.1 litres/100km has 

the potential, if the driver has 

the discipline to go easy on the 

throttle, to potentially travel about 

900km on a full tank of petrol. 

The starting point for this 

likeable little fuel miser is the 

$28,990 mid-spec GLX, or you 

can opt for something more posh 

with the $31,990 RS. A two-tone 

roof is a $500 extra but does add a 

bit of affordable visual pizzazz. 

The hybrid RS Swift added to 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

the Swift Catalogue two years ago 

is just the ticket for those who 

want hybrid thrift, but don’t want 

to go frugal on the finer things of 

motoring life. 

Standard equipment includes 

electrically folding exterior 

mirrors, climate control air 

conditioning, steering wheel 

mounted paddle-shifters, keyless 

entry and push button start. 

It also has the added safety 

buffer of Suzuki’s advanced 

forward detection system, lane 

keep function, lane departure 

warning, weaving alert and blind 

spot monitoring. 

Braking is upgraded over the 

GLX with disc brakes all round 

and dual sensor brake support 

comprising a monocular camera 

Ratings out of 10: Performance 6; Handling 7; Build Quality 

7; Comfort 6; Passenger and Load Space 6; Styling 7; Value 

for money 7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating. 

Overall points out of 10: 6.5 

that “sees” mid-to-long distance 

and can detect pedestrians. 

Mechanically, the cheaper GLX 

and RS share the same 1.2-litre 

4-cylinder motor teamed with the 

Suzuki Smart Hybrid system 

This mild hybrid uses a motor 

to support fuel-consuming 

standing starts and acceleration 

and utilises automatic stop-start 

with the petrol motor shutting 

down when the car is stationary 

in traffic. 

Together, the 1.2-litre engine 

and electric motor have a 

combined power output of 

64kW, which, by today’s hybrid 

standards, is modest, but then this 

is older hybrid technology. 

Established 

since 1982 

This rather limp power output 

makes for pedestrian, rather 

than electrifying, performance. 

However, the sedate progress 

gives you more time to appreciate 

the fuel savings the motor is 

making, and the impressively low 

emissions of 94g/km. 

The lack of performance intent 

is mitigated somewhat by the 

engine’s smoothness and low 

noise levels. I was disappointed at 

just how little time the test vehicle 

operated in electric only mode 

over flat terrain in around town 

driving. Hopefully an all-new 

Swift due here in the next few 

months does better. 

Despite its advancing years, 

the current Swift remains a 

clever design. A good example 

is the more compact engine 

compartment that frees up more 

cabin and load space, although 

never in copious amounts. 

A clean modern fascia 

complete with seven cup-holders 

is a masterstroke, but not the 

prevalence of hard plastic surfaces 

through out the cabin that are 

reminder of the Swift’s budget car 

DNA. 

MacPherson strut and 

coil spring suspension have 

successfully under pinned 

Swifts for quite a while. Further 

refinements made for this model 

provide small but worthwhile 

improvements. 

It’s now more adept at absorbing 

bumps and vehicle occupant 

comfort has improved, but the 

suspension can be noisy over high 

frequency bumps during lowspeed 

town driving. 

The Swift trademark agility is 

better than ever and the steering 

crisp and responsive, making 

for a playful and engaging drive 

over undulating roads, and is an 

expected bonus in a mini hatch in 

this price bracket.
