Lady a lucky greyhound
Te Kaha water upgrade
Work on essential water
upgrades around Te Kaha will
get under way in late July. Said
city council acting general
manager city infrastructure
Brent Smith: “We’re taking a
staged approach, starting by
upgrading the water supply
and wastewater infrastructure
around the arena on Lichfield,
Madras and Barbadoes streets.’’
The water upgrade work is
expected to finish in early 2025.
ADOPTING AN 11-year-old
greyhound wasn’t always on the
cards for Anna Farge.
But she says her new dog, from
the city council’s animal shelter,
completed the missing piece of
the puzzle.
Farge’s family of six – including
her Jack Russell, Jake – grew
by one last week as they welcomed
‘Lady’.
“I came across Lady on the
council’s Facebook page, and her
age was never an issue. As soon
as I saw her face I knew there was
something very special about
her,” Farge said.
“I chatted to the shelter over
the phone then went in with the
kids and Jake to meet her – she
was just what our family was
missing.
“She came up to us with a
wagging tail, socialising with
Jake straight away and even
giving my 16-month-old kisses
in his pram. We took her home
the next day.”
Greyhounds are nothing
new for Farge, after losing her
13-year-old greyhound last year
and spending plenty of time
around her mum’s pack.
However, finding homes for retired
racing greyhounds around
the country is difficult, with
more dogs than homes.
Dogs are now being sent to
the United States, rather than
waiting to be adopted in New
Zealand.
As of early June, 44 greyhounds
have made the trip to
new homes in the US, RNZ
reported.
Darrin Williams from Greyhound
Racing New Zealand told
RNZ the adoption market there
is different from New Zealand.
“They’re exactly the opposite to
us. We’ve got plenty of dogs and
not enough applications. They’ve
got piles of applications and
no dogs because there’s hardly
any racing over in America.
So, before they go, many of the
dogs have already begun to be
matched with the right home.”
Greyhound Racing New
Zealand looked into the
Moorings shortage
Boaties are being urged to
give up moorings they rent in
Akaroa Harbour if they are not
being used. Moorings will be
in short supply when the new
$19.1m wharf is being built,
meaning there won’t be enough
for all who currently rent space.
Harbourmaster Guy Harris
said the solution was for people
who don’t use their mooring
to relinquish them during the
rebuild next year.
programme after seeing
Australia do it.
Williams told RNZ the US programme
will allow the waitlist of
dogs to be cleared faster.
There are 350 dogs currently
on the waitlist for adoption, he
said.
Farge said she wasn’t even
looking for a new dog when Lady
caught her eye on the city council’s
Facebook page.
“I just wanted to give Lady the
best last years of her life with a
family that loves her.
“It’s not how long you have a
dog that matters, it’s how long
the dog has you.”
Trainees to be paid
Air traffic control trainees
will now be considered
employees after intervention
from the workforce watchdog.
The trainees spend up to 18
months working towards
their qualification, which
is split into two parts. Prior
to an agreement between
Airways NZ and the Labour
Inspectorate, trainees would
receive an allowance but not be
paid as employees.
Decision
on rates
expected
today
THE ARTS Centre, Orana Park
and the Santa Parade have all
secured ratepayer funding in the
city council’s Long-Term Plan,
while a decision on rates is due
today.
The city council will reconvene
today to formally adopt the
2024-34 Long-Term Plan, after
provisionally adopting it on
Tuesday.
The first year of the LTP
includes an average rates rise
of 9.90 per cent, which is lower
than the 13.24 per cent the city
council consulted on in its in
draft LTP.
The Arts Centre will get
$750,000 annually for the next
two years and then $500,000 for
the following eight years, Stuff
reported. This is on top of a previously
decided $110,000 grant
in 2024/25 and 2025/26.
Arts Centre Trust chairperson
Murray Dickinson told Stuff the
amount fell short of what was
needed to retain the operation
in its current form, but was
enough to sustain it in the
short-term.
“Trustees and staff express
their gratitude to the thousands
of supporters of Te Matatiki Toi
Ora The Arts Centre who made
submissions to the council.”
Orana Park will receive
$510,000 annually for the next
three years, and the Santa Parade
$125,000 a year for the next
three years, Stuff reported.
A climate resilience fund will
also be created to help communities
adapt to natural hazards
and sea-level rise.
The city council has also
decided to charge for parking
at Hagley Park during the week
and on weekends, at a cost of
$4.60 for three hours.
The LTP sets out the city
council’s programme for
providing and funding services
over the next decade.
Dickason sentenced to 18 years,
• By Tim Brown
A MOTHER who brutally
murdered her three young
daughters has escaped life
imprisonment.
There was
silence in the
High Court at
Christchurch
and Lauren
Dickason
showed no signs
of emotion as
Justice Cameron
Mander imposed
a sentence of 18
Cameron
Mander
years’ imprisonment yesterday.
Those closest to Dickason told
the court they had forgiven her,
but the devastating effects of her
actions in September 2021 would
resonate through the rest of their
lives.
She would begin her sentence
as a patient at a mental health
hospital in the custody of the
state under the Mental Health
(Compulsory Assessment and
Treatment) Act.
Justice Mander imposed no
minimum non-parole period,
saying her severe mental illness
was not only a contributing factor
to her actions, but the cause.
Dickason will be eligible for
parole after she has served a third
of her sentence.
The girls’ father, Graham
SENTENCE: Lauren Dickason was yesterday sentenced to 18 years, with no minimum period
of non-parole, for the September 2021 murders of her three young daughters.
PHOTO: ALDEN WILLIAMS/POOL
Dickason, said he forgave his
wife for what she had done, but
her actions had robbed of him of
the life he knew and the joy his
future held.
Lauren smothered 6-year-old
Lianè and 2-year-old twins Karla
and Maya in their beds on September
16, 2021.
The family had only recently
arrived in New Zealand from
South Africa and just moved to
Timaru after leaving Covid-19
managed isolation.
Lauren’s parents and other
family members were in court
yesterday to support her.
Her father and a close family
member read victim impact
statements in support of her.
Less than an hour after she was
sentenced for the murders Dickason
issued a statement through
her lawyer saying she loved her
daughters with all her heart.
However, she had failed them,
her husband and their families.
“I take responsibility for taking
our three beautiful girls from this
world,” Dickason said.
“I would like to take this opportunity
to convey the deepest
and most sincere remorse for the
extreme pain and hurt caused to
my children and my family by
my actions.”
Graham was not in court, but
victim impact statements were
read on his behalf, as well as
those of his mother and three
sisters.
When asked if she had anything
to say as to why she should
not be sentenced, Dickason did
not respond.
She listened intently as the victim
impact statements were read,
often with a pained grimace on
her face and occasionally lowering
her eye-line as details of the
effects of her offending were read.
Graham’s statement said he
forgave the woman he married in
2006 for what she had done.
“It is obvious that this tragedy
has changed my life forever. I
have not only lost my children
but also my life with my wife,” he
said.
He had lost not only the
opportunity to see his little girls
flourish and grow, but also the
opportunity to one day be a
grandfather, as he and Lauren
had children late in life following
a long and difficult journey to
conceive.
“I have managed to accept my
current situation in life,” he said.
escapes life imprisonment
“Lauren Dickason has lost
everything I have lost. I made
the decision to forgive Lauren for
what she has done.
“She will have to live with the
knowledge of what she has done
for the rest of her life.
“Her punishment is already
severe . . . I hold no ill will to
Lauren for what she has done.”
Graham said he was pleased
she was getting healthcare for
her mental health conditions in
New Zealand.
“The real victims are Lianè,
Maya and Karla. We will miss
them forever.”
Graham’s mother, Bettie
Dickason, said she felt like she
was living in a horror movie.
“I don’t have the vocabulary to
accurately describe the pain this
has brought me and my family,”
her victim impact statement said.
“I’m a 78-year-old grandmother
who once had 10 grandchildren
– now I only have seven.
“There is no escaping the pain.
It numbs me. It makes me want
to crawl under the covers and
never come out again.”
Graham’s sisters’ victim impact
statements were also read to
the court.
Hermien Naude said the murder
of the three girls had broken
her mother and revealed she had
never really known Lauren at all.
Elisabeth Botes said her
brother’s strength throughout
the ordeal had been incredible.
“When we spoke in anger
(against Lauren), he rebuked us,”
Botes’ statement said.
Lauren betrayed the trust and
love of her little girls, she said.
“Lauren gave no consideration
for the consequences of her actions,”
Botes said.
“She took the lives of three little
girls who loved her.
“They didn’t chose her. She
chose them.”
Cecilia Muller said the deaths
of Lianè, Maya and Karla had
changed the lives of her family
forever and in a way that could
never heal.
“I do not think anyone has
any idea what Graham went
through,” her statement said.
with their
Maya, 2,
Lianè, 6,
and Karla, 2.
“There was a small funeral.
Seeing Graham walk to the car
with the girl’s ashes after the
funeral broke my heart. Our
beautiful girls were reduced to
“I have heard my brother cry
in the shower. There were no
words to describe the loss.”
Muller said she did not hate
Lauren.
“I feel a deep sadness and
disappointment as things could
Her parents, Malcolm and
Wendy Fawkes, called for leniency
for their daughter, saying her
silent struggle with post-partum
depression was more profound
and disturbing than anyone had
understood.
“She has been punished
enough already. She has lost
everything, as has her husband,”
Malcolm told the court.
“She has expressed grief, remorse,
shame and incredulity for
what she has done.”
A close family member, who
had name suppression, told the
court it was clear the person who
killed Lianè, Maya and Karla
was not the mother, doctor or
woman they knew Lauren to be.
“We can tell how much she
loved those three girls and
couldn’t have been in sound
mind when she did what she
did,” the family member said.
“The greatest victim in this
situation may be Lauren herself.”
Lauren’s family outlined a
litany of agencies and individuals
they were angry at for failing her
and her daughters by failing to
detect the severity of her mental
health struggles or exacerbating
them.
Justice Mander said Dickason
had fundamentally breached
her daughters’ trust as they were
vulnerable, entirely dependent
on her and unsuspecting as they
viewed her as a source of safety
and love.
But he accepted if not for her
severe mental illness, the murders
would not have occurred.
It was why he found either a
sentence of life imprisonment or
a minimum non-parole period of
‘Her punishment is already
severe . . . I hold no ill will
to Lauren for what she has
done’ – Graham Dickason
17 years would have been manifestly
unjust.
Her lawyer, Kerryn Beaton,
said Lauren was deeply remorseful
for what she had done and
would never recover from the
loss her actions caused.
Lauren was remanded at
Hillmorton Hospital for several
months following her guilty
verdicts.
She had undergone psychiatric
testing at the court’s request,
leading to delays in her sentencing,
which was originally scheduled
for December.
At trial, the defence advanced
the theory Lauren was in the
grips of a severe depressive
episode, linked to the lingering
effects of postpartum depression.
Details of her long history of
mental health battles, IVF struggles,
tensions with motherhood
and angst around the family’s
move to New Zealand were laid
bare during the four-week trial.
The court also heard of her
violent visions in the weeks
before the deaths, alongside her
web search history, detailing
inquiries on “how to cause child
drug overdoses”. – RNZ
Doc Edge
packed
with world
premieres
FILM LOVERS have the chance to
take part in Doc Edge, a cutting-edge
documentary festival, until Sunday.
The Oscar-qualifying festival brings international
film industry members, events
and world premieres, to the city.
Festival general manager and producer
Rachael Penman said it is a celebration
of documentary storytelling, exploring
themes of truth, impact, and reconciliation.
“Doc Edge has earned recognition as we
work towards establishing the first dedicated
Asia-Pacific documentary centre,
featuring an Oscar-qualifying documentary
festival, industry events and markets,
a schools programme, and immersive
exhibition,” said Penman.
The festival is in its 19th year.
This year’s programme includes 66 films
screening at Hoyts EntX, Alice Cinema
and Lumiere Cinemas, and 28 immersive
projects. It also boasts the largest number
of world premieres, many of which are
international films – including 11 feature
films, nine short films, and 10 immersive
projects.
Penman said working with other events
MASSIVE
in the city was a draw-card.
“Our decision to host the festival in
Ōtautahi Christchurch came down to our
desire to work with the local community,
and ChristchurchNZ were very keen to
support us to be an Asia-Pacific hub for all
things documentary.
“It’s not about us just being a festival –
it’s about working with other events in the
city, such as Tīrama Mai and the Matariki
programme of events at the Arts Centre to
create a festival city vibe over that time.”
ChristchurchNZ head of major events
Karena Finnie said Doc Edge balanced the
city’s major mid-winter events portfolio.
“Alongside providing visitors and residents
with a record-breaking programme
of international premieres and immersive
experiences, there’s a host of interactive
activities designed to grow our region’s
film-making capacity.”
Finnie said the industry events pair
talent from here and around the world,
designed to connect and grow the
knowledge of students, storytellers and
future filmmakers.
NEWS
TreaTing CanCer
I recently attended the NZ
Veterinary conference in
the Convention Centre in
Christchurch and it was
“everything cancer in pets”
spread over three days. Very
few clinics in NZ offer a full,
comprehensive oncology
service to pets and their
owners, but Steve and I
are very proud to be able
to say our oncology team,
led by veterinarian Dr
Kirsty Thompson, is doing
a fabulous job with this
disease in our patients.
Our main aim with a
cancer patient is to
improve their quality of life (QOL),
for whatever life they have left. Some
patients we diagnose are asymptomatic
and essentially healthy. Some patients are
clearly unwell. Whatever
the cancer type and stage
we can tailor a plan to
optimise QOL and minimise
pain and discomfort.
Some cancers we can
cure (oral plasmacytoma)
but will require ongoing
monitoring. Some cancers
can’t be cured (Lymphoma)
but are successfully
managed.
Our main responsibility
to the pet owner is to
explain what we currently
know, what additional
information would be
useful, what treatment
options are possible
and potential prognosis
for their pet. We need
to take the time to run
through their queries
and be as honest and
upfront as we can. We
also need to take into
account the likely costs
incurred of treating
cancer. Everyone has
to be onboard and
expectations clear at the
start.
Our first skill is in
diagnosing what type
and stage of cancer we
are dealing with as this
provides the framework
for treatment, whether
it be surgery (radiation,
intralesional therapy or
electrochemotherapy) or
chemotherapy (maximally
tolerated dose, metronomic
or immunotherapy).
The most common
cancers we see at MMH
vets are MCT (mast cell
tumours), sarcomas,
adenocarcinomas,
lymphomas,
osteosarcomas, lipomas,
melanomas.
Diagnosis relies on
many tests but often the
simplest, cytology of the mass,
Treating
the cancer
patient
Renal cancer
patient
survivor
can yield a diagnostic answer. Sometimes a
segment of the mass needs to be sampled
(or removed) and sent to the laboratory for
histopathology. Other testing employed
to check for malignancy is radiographs,
ultrasonography, CT, and MRI. Its also
important to check the patient’s blood and
urine tests to assess liver and renal function,
and electrolytes imbalances. During
chemotherapy we need to check for bone
marrow suppression (check red and white
blood cells and platelets) as this dictates
our chemo schedule and
strength of drug used.
Cancer has four phases of
treatment-
1. The investigative stage
aims at defining a type
and stage of the cancer,
whether it is malignant
and has spread to other
sites and whether the pet
has any other identifiable
illnesses that will impact
treatment or prognosis.
2. The initial treatment
phase which involves
either surgery, radiation
therapy, chemotherapy or
metronomic therapy
3. The monitoring and ongoing treatment
phase continues for those cancers that can’t
be cured or where relapses are possible.
This phase involves more
testing, chemotherapy
and sometimes surgeries
4. End of life phase is all
about palliative care and
supporting our clients
through the difficult
process of euthanasia, and
when is the right time.
At McMaster & Heap we
offer a referral oncology
service for these often,
complicated cases. We
see all types of cancers
A K9 patient
receiving
intravenous
chemotherapy
A successfully
completed
round of
chemo
and offer a range of
diagnostic services and
treatments including
surgery, ultrasound, CT and
chemotherapy. We work
with an oncology specialist in
Australia for those rarer cancer
types and if necessary, refer to
Board recognised Specialist
orthopaedic or soft tissue
surgeons for advanced and
more complex surgeries.
If chemotherapy is
appropriate, we offer in
house treatments (oral,
subcutaneous, and
intravenous) and this can
usually get this started on
the same day or within a
couple of days of the owners
making the decision. There
is often a misconception
that chemotherapy will
make animals sick like it
does in humans, but the
truth is that only 10-15%
have side effects and these
are usually managed by
medications that can be
given at home. Pets also
don’t lose their hair and in
fact tolerate it exceptionally
well.
Cancer doesn’t have to be a
“life sentence”. Its a disease
like hepatitis and there
are many new innovative
treatment options, that can
offer better than expected
survival times and QOL. Its
a process to go through but
McMaster & Heap vets can guide you and
help you with decision making.
If you would like to discuss your pets cancer,
please book an appointment with Dr Kirsty
Thompson. Kirsty will provide all the facts
and honestly help you navigate through all
the steps of cancer diagnosis and treatment
options.
PARTIALLY RESTORED: A former rest home is for sale again after Williams
Corp abandoned plans for a 51-room boarding house.
Old rest home site
back on the market
A FORMER rest home in Avonside is on
the market after high profile developer
Williams Corp abandoned plans for a
51-room accommodation block.
The company, one of New Zealand’s
biggest builders, bought the former
St James Rest Home in Patten St in
2020 for $2.375 million and lodged
plans to turn it into a boarding
house, OneRoof reported yesterday.
The property had been sitting
vacant since the February 2011
earthquake.
Colliers listing agent Courtney
Doig told OneRoof the property
had been upgraded by Williams
Corp and was being sold in a
partially restored condition.
“Williams Corp’s original intention was
to continue with the repair and lease it as a
boarding house,” he said.
“But the process with council took a
lot longer than expected. They have had
a change of direction, and they want to
focus on their core business of (building)
townhouses.”
Williams Corp first listed the 4043 sq m
Courtenay
Doig
WOF
only $70
property on Patten St in April last year. It
changed agencies at the start of this month
and relaunched the listing with Colliers on
June 14.
The property has had a of the building
interiors but the work is
incomplete and the windows are
boarded up.
Doig thought it was unlikely
a buyer would demolish the
buildings.
She told OneRoof: “There is
too much value in the residual
improvements. I think it will be
given a new lease of life. It has
been relevelled, replumbed, and
rewired. It is still a project for an
incoming builder, tradesman or
developer to finish.”
Doig said Williams Corp was happy to
sell the property in its current state or do
a build contract with the purchaser and
complete the existing project.
She said there was a need for boarding
houses in Christchurch, but the property
could equally be used as a medical facility.
‘Old Ted’ the inspiration for hospital
giving new life to old teddy bears
• By John Cosgrove
IN AN OLD black and white
photo from 1917, an eight-yearold
girl can be seen happily
showing off her new British
teddy bear.
More than 100 years later,
the photo has helped build
the foundation of a teddy bear
hospital in Canterbury.
The young girl was Kaiapoi
resident Suzanne Irvine’s
grandmother, Florence Fransden,
and for more than 107 years ‘‘Old
Ted’’ the teddy bear has been
watching over generations of the
Irvine family.
Taking care of Old Ted over
the years inspired the former
CTV camerawoman to start her
Teddy Bear Hospital.
A few years ago she started
making and repairing teddy
bears part-time, but her love for
restoring old heritage bears saw
her start teddybearhospital.co.nz.
The mohair British teddy
bear was made by the Terry Toy
Company in East London and
travelled to a Canterbury toy
shop sometime before 1914.
In 1917 he was purchased
by some of Florence’s family
members who bought him to aid
in her recovery from a near-fatal
illness and a three-month stay in
hospital.
When the photo was taken in
1917, three of her brothers went
off to World War 1, never to
return.
‘‘Old Ted sat on a small chair
in the lounge of the family home
on Moorhouse Ave,” Irvine said
‘‘My dad was an only child and
he wasn’t allowed to play with
him, and neither were we ever
allowed to touch him.
‘‘That’s why he was in such
good condition, as he just sat
there, out of the sun,’’ Irvine said.
Old Ted was later passed on to
Irvine’s father Martyn, a retired
carpenter, and in time he will
pass him on to Irvine who has
bear to his former glory.
‘‘Four generations of my family
have worked on Old Ted to
preserve his stability.
‘‘There were old stitches
on his ears which my greatgrandmother
would have done.
‘‘Grandma kept him together
sewing him up when the stitches
failed over the years,” Irvine said.
‘‘My dad tidied him up and
replaced the eyes, and now I’ve
cleaned him up and strengthened
him so he’s looking as bright and
‘‘I love repairing the
old teddy bears. I’ve only
been in business for four
weeks and people from
all over are calling me up,
surprised there is a teddy
bear hospital service here
in Kaiapoi.’’
sparkly as he was when he first
came into our family.’’
Irvine says Old Ted now has
a shine on his fur that he never
had before – 60 years of sitting
near an open fire had coated it in
black smokey ash and tar.
Irvine is currently working on
a 23-year-old toy lion attacked
by a dog, a 70-year-old rabbit
and an 85-year-old teddy bear
suffering from a bug infestation
problem.
‘‘I love repairing the old teddy
bears. I’ve only been in business
for four weeks and people
from all over are calling me up,
surprised there is a teddy bear
hospital service here in Kaiapoi.’’
‘‘That one I had to put in the
freezer for 48 hours to kill off all
the bugs, now I’m thawing him
out before the restoration work
starts.’’
Irvine has been surprised by
the demand for her skills.
‘‘It’s been crazy the demand,
with many calls coming from
Canterbury and just as many
from cities up north.’’
She says Old Ted epitomises
the physical longevity of heritage
family bears.
‘‘They honour the legacy and
heritage they represent in a
family’s history.
‘‘It’s time for people to dig out
these old bears from storage and
create a lasting family heirloom
for future generations to enjoy.’’
Old Ted’s past
In 1890, William J. Terry
founded his toy factory, based in
east London.
The company was already
famous for its soft toys before
producing its first teddy bears in
the early 1900s.
English bears, like Old Ted,
usually had glass eyes with
painted backs.
The webbed claw stitching
on the bear’s paws is another
characteristic of English bears.
Terry died in 1924 and his son
took over the company. But just
before World War 2, the factory
was shut down.
Made between 1905 and 1908
from shaggy mohair and stuffed
with wood wool and kapok, these
dolls set the standard for British
bears.
Certified Terry bears like Old
Ted now sell at international
auctions for NZD$2000 and
above, while many others reside
in museums such as the Victoria
& Albert Museum in London.
House or baby? The decision not to
As first-home buyers get
older, people are delaying
having children or
choosing not to have
them at all.
New Zealand sociologist
and emeritus professor
at Massey University Paul
Spoonley told OneRoof the
shifting milestones had
serious implications for the
housing market and the
future of the country.
“People are delaying or
putting off completely
having children and part of
that mix is trading off what
you can afford, including
home ownership,” Spoonley
said.
Stats NZ’s latest fertility
data, released in May,
showed a fertility rate of
1.52 births per woman
– a record low, OneRoof
reported.
Meanwhile, the average
age of first-home buyers
had reached 36.6 in the
first quarter of this year,
Centrix data showed. The
average mortgage size was
$159,714 higher than in
2019.
Spoonley told OneRoof
financial constraints were
increasingly driving decisions
such as living independently
and taking on a
mortgage.
“While the delay in
homeownership and starting
a family is significantly
influenced by educational
and career commitments,
particularly among women,
financial considerations
are increasingly pivotal,” he
said.
“The cost of living, especially
post-pandemic, had
become a major factor.
Decisions are often being
made between investing
in housing and having
children.”
Campbell Hastie, from
Hastie Mortgages, told OneRoof
his firm had clients
who were trying to balance
buying their first home
with starting a family.
“First-home buyers are
older and there are lots of
reasons for that. Getting
educated and getting a
career so you can earn
enough money for a house
deposit, and you can’t do
it on your own unless you
have a significant income,”
he said.
“All of those things don’t
happen now until you’re
certainly in your late 20s
if not 30s, and at that
age, the biological clock
is ticking and it’s ticking
hard so, yes, couples are
choosing,” Hastie said.
DANNI DUNCAN is a 34-yearold
who has chosen to not have
children.
The Christchurch woman
has hundreds of thousands of
people following her child-free
journey on social media, where
she provides advice and support
to others who are thinking about
making the same decision.
Duncan said she thought
would have children one day but
was on the fence about it for two
years.
“I never had the desire that
other people speak of, but I just
thought that’s what you do.
“Within the last year I have, I
have come to a conclusion that
‘no, I don’t want to have kids’.”
Duncan said having children
was expensive and finances were
a big part of the decision.
“My husband and I are about
to buy a house, and our mortgage
going to be pretty big. I cannot
see how we would do that and
have a child. I know people do. I
just personally don’t see how we
would do that.”
She said it took many conversations
with her husband for them
both to be on the same page.
The other reason was her independence.
“The biggest thing for me is my
independence. I’m an independent
person and I like being on
my own, which is a little ironic
NO GO: Danni Duncan said taking on a big mortgage was a
factor in her decision not to have kids. PHOTO: RNZ
because people like to tell me I’m
going to be so lonely if I don’t
have kids.”
Other reasons included the
sacrifice Duncan would need to
make, and the drastic life change.
“I’m just very aware that life
would change a lot if I was to
have children, and I know some
people might say that’s selfish,
but I just think I know myself
really well. I’m very aware of my
personality and the things that I
want out of life.”
But in her quest to open up
conversations on social media
about not having children,
Duncan has received threats and
vitriol for her position, she told
RNZ.
Some people were incredibly
supportive and thanked her for
talking about it, she said.
The other half were quite judgmental
and just really misunderstood
her.
“In my personal life however, I
think it took a while for people to
kind of get their heads around it,”
she said.
Whopping 187 bids
“But overwhelmingly I’ve had
a lot of support from my friends
and family, which is a relief because
I know that a lot of people
don’t experience it.”
“I think over the last couple of
years I’ve really had to learn that
people’s reactions has actually got
nothing to do with me and my
choice. It’s their own thing that
they’re dealing with.”
She said she had three nieces
and a nephew whom she adored.
Some people have told her she
would “never know true love” if
she did not have children.
But she looked at it from a different
perspective.
“They want me to experience
the joy and the fulfilment that
they’ve felt, and they only know
one way of doing that.”
And the ignorant comments
were not said with malice, she said.
“People have chosen not to
have children for generations.
However, I think this is one of
the first generations where we are
being quite vocal about that,” she
said, so the pushback made sense.
She said men had a lot more say
in her comments than women.
“Men just say the weirdest
things. I’ve been told I’m going to
be eaten by my cats when I die.
“I think women
. . . I can tell that the comments
come from a place of not feeling
seen or not feeling appreciated, or
potentially they did sacrifice a lot.
“I have a lot more empathy for
the women. As women often you
just cannot win no matter what
choice you make.”
Putting herself on social media
had connected her with people
choosing a similar life path.
“If I hadn’t talked about it, I
would still be doing this on my
own. There is nobody else in my
personal life that’s choosing not
to have children.
“So social media as much as it
can be detrimental sometimes,
it can be a really positive thing,
and that’s what I’m trying to
focus on.”
for Mairehau house
A FOUR-BEDROOM plaster
home in Mairehau became the
most wanted property in New
Zealand’s auction rooms last
week, attracting 187 bids in only
15 minutes.
Auctioneers
told OneRoof the
number of bids
was extraordinary.
The lifestyle
block on Queen
Elizabeth II
Drive sold for
$1.371 million
– more than
$180,000 above its 2022 RV.
Mark
Morrison
The auction quickly passed the
$1m mark with four determined
buyers bidding.
Harcourts Gold auctioneer
Mark Morrison told OneRoof
most of the bids were lodged after
the property was announced
on the market at $1.155 million,
with the last two bidders trying
to outdo each other in increments
of $1000-$3000.
“It was basically a two-horse
race,” he said.
Morrison also said 187 bids
were the most made on a single
property he could recall in his
IN DEMAND: A lifestyle block attracted 187 bids at auction
– an extraordinary number, according to auctioneers.
four years as an auctioneer.
“That was something else.
It was a lot of small bids just
chipping away. No one really put
$20,000 on to try and finish it.
They just punched and counterpunched,”
he told OneRoof.
The 5520 sq m property’s large
landholding likely set off the
bidding war, he said.
Bayleys national auction manager
Conor Patton told OneRoof
187 was a high number of bids in
any market.
Patton said when the market
was red hot in 2021 the average
number of bids was 13.5, compared
to an average of four bids
per auction now.
Harcourts national auction
manager Shane Cortese told
OneRoof when bidders were
getting into a $1000 battle the
best thing the buyer could do
was “change it up”.
“Go in with a hammer blow of
$10,000 or $15,000 rather than
go one for one.”
HILLMORTON HIGH SCHOOL
Ann Brokenshire, Principal’s message
Kia ora koutou, warm greetings to you all
Our vision is “with our communities, we nurture, wellrounded
and accomplished young people, prepared
and ready for life”.
This vision comes to life every day at our school with
academic classes being the focus for five hours each
day, but with a myriad of other activities in which
students can choose to participate.
In addition to this, our teachers strive to ensure
the learning is authentic. Two examples of this are
exemplified here:
The swale planting by Year 10 students was preceded
by the Environment Committee student-designed
lesson on riparian planting.
Our students will have on-going responsibilities to
look after these plantings.
June 2024
Similarly, our full Year 9 cohort went to Halswell
Quarry for a Big Day Out where their study of History,
Geography, Horticulture, Science, Mathematics and
English were all fully integrated.
We are proud of our students and how they do
indeed become well-rounded and accomplished
young people learning alongside others from diverse
backgrounds.
Stunning new sports’ complex
Started in May 2023 and due for completion in November 2024, our
new gymnasium and associated facilities has reached some significant
milestones.
In consultation with local iwi, the complex has been given the name
Te Kōmata o Te Rangi (The Pinnacle in the Sky). The two classrooms are
Manawaroa (resilience) and Ngākau Mākahi (humility with heart); the
conditioning space is Mārohi (strength, power); and honouring Graham
Leslie, a long-serving Deputy Principal and basketball coach, the two
full-size courts with seating for 250 people are Leslie 1 and Leslie 2.
While the gymnasium has been funded by the Ministry of Education,
the adjacent five-bay garage Outdoor Education Hub has come about
through school, business, community and whānau contributions.
As part of the landscaping, a significant swale, designed to assist with
drainage, stormwater management and in clearing sediments and
contaminants, is sited next to the complex.
In mid-June, the Environment Committee led our Year 10 students in
planting 1,500 native plants. The students got to demonstrate our
school goal of Tūrangawaewae (a sense of belonging, a place to stand)
by restoring the whenua closer to its original wetland state.
Wonderful wall mural
A beautiful, significant wall mural
has been painted on B Block, facing
out on to the main quad.
In true community collaboration,
the mural was designed by Carolyn
Eng, our Head of Visual Arts, and
brought to life by Rodrigo Rozas,
father of one of our students, and
a sign writer and street artist who,
in acknowledgement of his own
whakapapa, is known as Chile One
NZ, with assistance from some of
our students and staff.
Within the mural: the mātātā
(fernbird) is a wise communicator;
the tāniko (weaving) adds the
imagery of maunga (mountain)
referencing our school whakataukī
(proverb); and the takarangi (spiral)
in the bottom left corner refers to
Rangi, Papa and the birth of
Te Ao Mārama.
Halswell Quarry Big day Out
Our Year 9 Students have been visiting
Halswell Quarry since 2016 for a ‘Big
Day Out’ of Ako (learning) based
around this fabulous community
resource.
The students move around activities
and learn with kaiako (teachers) from
Hillmorton High School and the
amazing Christchurch City Council
Educators and Rangers from the
Learning Through Action Team.
One of the pivotal tasks, and the
reason for our Autumn visit, involves
social action and conservation; we
have planted shrubs every visit since 2016. Past
and present students feel both connected to
Halswell Quarry and proud to have supported its
regeneration.
Students learn about the history, geography and
fascinating geology, marvelling at how many
of the quarry’s rocks and stones were used in
building greater Ōtautahi (Christchurch). They
also walk up and around the hills, taking photos
and writing haikus to capture the essence of
Autumn at Halswell Quarry.
A magnificent asset, the
mural aligns with our
kaupapa of embedding
Te Ao Māori and
experiential learning in
our school.
We enjoy the day together and focus
on our Term Two school value of
whanaungatanga (interconnectedness
and positive relationships).
Halswell Quarry is a great place to learn.
Living the Olympic dream
The 2024 Paris Olympics start in 29 days. Sports reporter
Sam Coughlan caught up with some of the Cantabrians heading to the games
Brothers ready for heat of competition
Joe (left) and Charlie Morrison.
A MAIDEN trip to the
Olympics has been a long time
coming for hockey umpire
Gareth Greenfield.
The 41-year-old will set off
next month to Paris to umpire at
the games for the first time – 16
years after first stepping foot on
the international stage.
He lives and breathes the
sport, playing occasionally for
the Southern United club as
well, where he is club captain,
and manager of the Just Hockey/
Cricket Express store in
Riccarton.
Greenfield said the Olympics
had been a dream since he
started umpiring as a teenager.
“It’s something I’ve been
striving pretty hard over the
years to try and achieve.
“When you’re young and you
start umpiring, it’s a bit of a
goal.
“I’ve been umpiring since I
was probably 13 or 14, just been
plugging away at it and coming
through the years and I guess,
the Olympics are the pinnacle of
an umpire’s career.”
In 2008, he took charge of
his first international match,
between New Zealand and Chile
in Pukekohe.
“Back then you’re a bit of a
BROTHERS JOE and Charlie
Morrison are on the cusp of
fulfilling a lifelong dream when
they run out for the Black Sticks at
the Olympic Games in Paris.
The pair, aged 22 and 20
respectively, have been selected in
the 16-man squad for what will be
their first time at the games.
Charlie said it was a special
moment for them.
“We both probably never
thought it was gonna happen, so it
is a real honour to be selected and
you always dream of going to an
Olympics. I can’t wait.”
Joe said it had always been
something he’s wanted to
accomplish.
“Obviously you watch it on TV
‘It’s something special’
possum in headlights,” he said.
“But I guess, it just comes with
experience and trust in your
process.”
Since then, he’s umpired 110
international games, including
trips to the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth
Games and the FIH
World Cup last year in India.
But he said the Olympics were
simply next-level.
“It’s something special because
it’s a multi-sport event.
You’ve got not just hockey eyes
watching, whereas at a hockey
World Cup, generally, it’s the
hockey community following
that.’’
Having not umpired an
international since the Olympic
qualifiers held in Oman in
January, Greenfield has been
keeping his skills sharp by
officiating Christchurch club
games.
“(It’s) what we need to do to
refine our skills.”
He said there were a few differences
between international
and club hockey.
“At club hockey where there
might be a little bit less skill and
structure, there’s more clashes,
more mistakes from the players.
“But you owe it to those guys
to give it the best you can.”
Games in Paris next month. PHOTO: GEOFF SOPER
growing up and it’s a pretty big
event. It’s the pinnacle of hockey,
so since I started playing it’s probably
been the goal.”
They’re joined in the squad by
fellow Cantabrians Sam Lane
and Simon Yorston – who is also
making his Olympic debut.
The brothers started playing
when Joe was eight and Charlie
seven, when they would watch
older sister Ella’s games at the
Marist Hockey Club.
The brothers would play on the
turf at halftime, alongside friend
George Baker – who is a reserve in
the Olympic squad.
They’ve played hundreds of
games together since then.
“We played Marist age-group
and then went to St Bede’s
together, played in the Canterbury
rep teams together, and Marist
premier men,” said Joe.
“So it’s pretty special to pull on
the jersey next to him and fulfil
the dream, I guess.”
Charlie remembered how many
from that first junior team went
on to big things.
“That team was actually a pretty
successful group.
“There was Dom Gardiner
(Crusaders flanker), a New Zealand
triathlete (Will Taylor), and
then three Black Sticks, it was a
pretty competitive group.”
While this will be the brothers’
first time on the Olympic stage,
they’re no stranger to world
events, having both featured at the
FIH World Cup in India last year
– where Charlie made his debut.
“I remember crowds of 20,000,
a lot of noise, pretty hectic environment,
I think it’s definitely
prepared me for what’s to come in
Paris a bit,” he said.
Joe expected Paris to be similar.
“They’re saying maybe some
heat in Paris, it was pretty hot
in India and we’ve also been in
Malaysia.
“But also, living together with
the team for in a small space for
quite a while, it’s different. It’s
good that we’ve had plenty of
practice at it.”
The Black Sticks will head to
Spain for a training camp next
week before arriving in Paris
ahead of their first game against
India on July 28 (NZT).
From Wharenui to Paris
WHEN CHRISTINE Cassin
began officiating swim meets
nearly 20 years ago, she could
never have imagined where it
would lead to.
From representative meetings
to the international stage at world
championships and events, next
month will see her officiate at
the pinnacle of global sport – the
Olympic Games.
Cassin is the only New
Zealander who will be a poolside
official at the Paris games,
testimony to the high regard and
reputation she has forged during
her time in the sport.
Northland’s Ross Gillespie
will be a referee at the open
water events, while his wife
Carlrine will be poolside at the
Paralympics, which follow the
Olympics.
Cassin is one of only two
Canterbury officials in Paris
alongside Gareth Greenfield, who
will umpire hockey in what is his
first Olympic Games.
“This is the ultimate goal, and
to have actually achieved it at this
age is very special,” 65-year-old
Cassin said.
Every four years the
international technical officials’
referee list is renewed. Cassin is
currently in her third and final
four-year term, which lasts until
the end of 2026.
“Once you turn 65 you can’t
apply to go on a list. I was 64
when I applied.”
Poolside, Cassin is one of 32
officials who will be involved in
a number of tasks from checking
a swimmer’s start and finish,
ensuring they are doing the
strokes and kicks correctly, to
monitoring the call room before
athletes come out to the pool.
Cassin never swam
competitively, but developed a
passion for the sport through her
children Holly and Ashley who
were competitive swimmers.
WATCHING ON: Christine
Cassin is the only New
Zealander who will be a
poolside official at the Paris
Olympics. Left, Cassin
monitors an athlete’s start
during the 2023 World
Aquatics games in Japan.
In 2010, she became
a regional referee and a
national referee two years
later. In 2015, she successfully
applied for one of New
Zealand’s six positions on
the World Aquatics international
technical officials list.
She officiated at the 2015
(Singapore) and 2017 (United
States) world junior champs
and the 2019 and 2023 World
Aquatics championships in South
Korea and Japan respectively.
Cassin will be in Paris for
12 days, nine of those spent at the
swimming events at the Paris La
Défense Arena, a multi-purpose
indoor arena developed by rugby
club Racing 92.
The Olympics will be the first
time swimming and water polo
events will be held at the venue.
A Wharenui club member,
most of her weekends are spent
officiating.
“We have competitions pretty
much every other weekend,
so it’s quite full-on. I’m on the
Swimming Canterbury West
Coast technical committee and
I’m the technical representative
on our events committee, so I’m
involved in planning our calendar
and going to those meets.
“It can be quite a commitment
time-wise, but I do love the
involvement. Swimming is
everything, it’s my passion.”
Tough to balance depth, development
Bevan Sisson
Rugby matters
A LOT OF TIMES in life you
seem to come up against a
brick wall that seems to be
impenetrable. No matter how
hard you push you can’t seem to
break through.
This is how some players must
feel when they can’t cement a
permanent playing spot in their
franchise.
With Super Rugby wrapped
up for 2024, the selection
meetings and planning for 2025
squads are now under way.
There will be plenty of players
locked-in already for most
franchises, but the fine balance
of keeping promising players
within the group is always a
challenge.
As a player, how long do you
keep trying to break down that
wall. If you are ranked fourth or
fifth on the depth chart, how do
you become part of the matchday
23 if you can’t get game
time.
While I was part of the NZ
under-20s selection panel, there
where times when we couldn’t
always agree. Though we had
player stats, footage and watched
live games, it still came down to
opinion.
If a player can’t get through
the wall, then the only other
option is to go round it.
There have been many
players who have had to take
that sideways path from the
Crusaders region. The likes of
Sam Darry, who was part of the
Crusaders set up (but behind a
well-established locking group),
decided to head to the Blues
where he’s a permanent fixture.
Brett Cameron is another who
seemed to get no traction or
consistent game time. Cameron’s
sideways decision was to head
to Japan where he got some
confidence and form back – then
to NPC at Manawatu, where he
was picked up by the Hurricanes
and finished out 2024 as their
starting No 10. Rameka Pohipi is
another Canterbury player who
is now a constant pick in the
Chiefs.
The latest is young up-andcomer
Zach Gallagher who
has come through from being
a junior at Burnside to making
Another great column by Bevan
Sisson ( June 20). Country
rugby does deserve way more
prominence here in Canterbury.
I remember the great Queen’s
Birthday weekend Town v
Country clashes, which are now
a thing of the past.
In the 80s you would
have greats like Robbie and
Bruce Deans, Andy Earl etc
representing Country. Town had
his debut for the Crusaders in
2022. He will now try to ignite
his career with the Hurricanes
from 2025.
The downside to creating and
developing quality depth is you
can’t keep them all, and there is
only so much money – and game
time to keep everyone satisfied.
One person who changed his
direction successfully is Ethan
Roots. Originally picked up
by the Crusaders from North
Harbour, he ended up having
just one appearance in 2020 and
could see no way forward in a
stacked forward pack.
Roots took the biggest
sideways path of all and headed
first to Ospreys and then to
Exeter in England. He had a
storming couple of seasons
and got noticed by the national
coaching and selection group.
Now he is headed back to
NZ, not to play Super Rugby
but as part of England’s touring
team and is set to play against
the ABs, who are now under
his former Super Rugby coach.
Warwick Taylor, Dale Atkins,
Wayne Smith etc – legends also.
They were great days.
North Canterbury and
Ellesmere have provided so
much to red and black rugby.
They need more air.
On another, but related,
subject, it was great to see
Sam Whitelock, Crusaders
and All Black legend bow out
as a winning captain with
He’s gone from doing the haka
There are many more from the
Crusaders region not mentioned,
and there will be many more in
the future, but those players are
a good example that sometimes
heading elsewhere to get another
opinion can prove beneficial and
open other doors.
• The passing of Connor
Garden-Bachop and Shayne
Philpott has been met with
great sadness. Both were top
guys. I knew Connor through
his time playing at Lincoln
University. He had a personality
that brightened any room he
entered and an infectious smile
that made it a joy to have him
around. Shayne was a Burnside
man and it was always good to
catch up with him. Thoughts
with their family and friends.
Redwood
My thoughts on the future of
rugby.
There are so many technical
ways to give away a penalty and
fewer for a free kick.
Winners, losers
and surprises in
Razor’s first team
WE ALL KNEW Scott
Robertson is happy to look
outside the norm and challenge
the status quo.
With his first selection group
named for the upcoming
England series we get a small
look into how he and his
coaching group are thinking.
Although most pundits would
be able to pick 80 per cent of
the squad, there were some
interesting insights.
There is an eye to the future
in some picks, George Bell and
Pasilio Tosi, but there’s also some
unlucky players. None more-so
than in-form Hoskins Sotutu
who lost a head to head battle
with Wallace Sititi.
Traditionally a squad is picked
with five loosies and four locks,
but Razor has been happy to cut
the locking group to three. It
is an insight that on game day
he may choose a loosie to cover
lock, as opposed to a lock that
can cover a loose forward spot.
This indicates a game that will
be pace-based, as opposed to
challenging England by coming
through through the front door.
With only three locks being
picked I thought Sam Darry was
I’ve played for about 25
years and think if you want
the game to be exciting, fast
and a place where the deserved
team actually wins, penalties
like collapsed scrum, dropped
intercept pass, failure to release
the ball in a tackle, retrieving
the ball too soon, and many
more, should be free kicks.
The whole rule book needs
looking at but the above is my
unlucky not to be an inclusion,
though he is in the squad for
injury cover for the time being.
His control at lineout time and
also his reading of opposition
lineouts has been world class
during the Super season. He is a
big body and direct in his carries
which may not suit the initial
Robertson gameplan, but if a
point of difference is needed later
in the year, his time will come.
There are some excitement
machines such as Caleb Clarke
whose notable improvement
in fitness and an in-form Sevu
Reece along with Mark Tele’a,
plus some other exciting options
for the back three which will
get the coaching team thinking
– who is best suited to do some
damage in those wide channels.
Pasilio Tosi is a great story who
only four years ago was playing
No 8 till his switch to prop while
at the Southland Stags. He has
had a quick rise to become an All
Black and they would see him as
an exciting project for 2024.
This upcoming series will
show what style the new
coaching group wants to play
and more importantly what
players suit their style.
FIRST LOOK: Scott Robertson’s first All Blacks squad has
given some insight into how he wants to approach the
visiting England side.
PHOTO: GETTY
Readers keen to see changes to rep rugby, penalty rules
suggestion to make the game
quick, exciting and fun to watch.
Last but not least, sending
someone from the field is just
stupid, such as in the World Cup
final.
I’ve watched game after game
where no-one knew why a
penalty was given, including
the player. It makes the game a
nonsense.
Rugby mourns loss of versatile Philpott
RUGBY’S MR Versatile Shayne
Philpott has been remembered
following his death this week.
Philpott, 58, died from what
is understood to be a medical
event in Christchurch.
A Burnside club stalwart, he
played 113 games for Canterbury
from 1986-1995, and was capped
14 times by the All Blacks, including
two tests.
Philpott could play in a number
of positions in the backline,
making his versatility an asset.
In hearing of Philpott’s death,
the New Zealand Herald’s
Phil Gifford recounted a story
of Philpott keeping Sir John
Kirwan out of the 1993 All
Blacks squad for the end-of-year
northern tour.
“In 1993, Philpott’s defence
at fullback for Canterbury in
a game against Auckland in
Christchurch cost John Kirwan
his place in the All Blacks for the
end-of-year tour to England and
Scotland.
“Twice Kirwan, on the wing
for Auckland, was unable to beat
Philpott on the outside.
“After the game, All Blacks
selector Earle Kirton would suggest
that Kirwan didn’t ‘have the
gas any more. Not enough gas’.
“True or not, a few weeks
later when the team to tour was
named, Kirwan, one of the alltime
greats, was not one of the
three wings who would tour.”
Philpott’s was the second
surprise death to rock New Zealand’s
rugby community, after
Wellington and Highlanders
outside back Connor Garden-
Bachop passed away from a
medical event in Christchurch
last week. He was 25.
Linwood look to secure last
spot in quarter-finals tussle
• By Sam Coughlan
LINWOOD’S destiny is in their
hands with one round to go in the
Metro rugby competition.
The Bulls sit eighth on the
ladder, currently occupying the
last quarter-final spot having
leapfrogged Shirley thanks to
an 86-0 win on Saturday over
Christchurch.
This week they’ll play Lincoln
University knowing a win will
confirm them a playoffs spot.
But head coach Brendan Nolan
said they’re not looking past
Saturday’s game.
“We haven’t really even spoken
around anything past this week,
for us, it’s game by game, and we’ll
put our best foot forward this
week and see where we end up.”
Earlier in the season, Linwood
had lost five games in a row, but
Nolan said the team never gave up
hope.
“We just had to stick to what
we were trying to do – make sure
we all stayed together. It’s quite
easy for some teams to form little
groups, but we hunkered down
and toughed it out.”
They’ve been boosted in recent
weeks by the presence of All
Black Richie Mo’unga at games
“It’s good for our boys just to be
able to connect with him, because
there’s a couple of guys that are
playing at the moment that were
around when Richie was around,”
said Nolan.
Nolan said Mo’unga won’t turn
out for the side this season.
a win to stay alive, while New
Life membership for Hornets stalwart
• By Will Evans
“IT’S A BIG, big plus for
grassroots rugby league.’’
That was the response
from Halswell Hornets and
Canterbury Rugby League
legend Jeff Whittaker after
receiving the ultimate
recognition from the game’s
national body.
Whittaker was awarded
New Zealand Rugby League
life membership at Saturday’s
NZRL annual meeting,
acknowledging his incredible
contribution at all levels of the
game.
“This is a dream and the
pinnacle for everyone in rugby
league [but] I accept this
award on behalf of everyone,”
Whittaker said.
“So to be involved with
grassroots and then Canterbury
and South Island, and then
on to New Zealand, it’s been
massive. But a journey that I’ve
loved every minute of.”
Whittaker has been
continuously involved with
Halswell Hornets since 1965
when he started as a schoolboy.
He has been involved at
the club as a coach, selector,
administrator and volunteer.
At a national level, Whittaker
has been a constant presence
as a coach and selector for
New Zealand junior and
women’s teams for more
than 20 years, where his
ability to identify and
nurture elite talent
flourished.
But he deflects
credit for his latest
achievement to those
nearest and dearest to
him.
“I’ve got to thank my late
mum Alice and dad Merv,
for everything they’ve done for
me and the way they’ve guided
me right through my life,”
Whittaker said.
“But the big thing is this
award’s really got to go
to my wife. While
I’m either at
training
sessions
or being
involved
at league camps, or away on
tour, or at meetings with the
administration side of it, when
you’ve got a farm
and horses and that sort of
thing, you need people at home.
“My wife Trace and my four
kids, Cara, Josh, Luke and Steffi
– without them, I wouldn’t be
able to do what I’ve been able to
achieve.
“But as far as New Zealand
Rugby League goes, mate, it was
just a privilege.’’
Whittaker played for 22
years, progressing through
the junior grades and
representing Canterbury,
South Island and Rest of
New Zealand at age-group
level.
He toured Australia with
Canterbury 19s and won
selection for South Island 19s
before progressing to the senior
club ranks as a foundation
player for fledgling Halswell
in 1979.
Whittaker played in
the club’s 1984-86
grand finals
– including
its first
premiership
triumph in
1985 – before
hanging up
the boots in 1987.
His first national appointment
was as New Zealand 16s selector
and coach in 1996, while he
took the NZ Secondary Schools
team to Australia in 2000 and
guided NZ 16s to a win over
Samoa in 2014.
Whittaker was also a
long-serving Canterbury
Bulls selector and a tireless
administrator for Halswell and
Canterbury.
Canterbury Rugby League
chief executive Malcolm Humm
said he was thrilled with
Whittaker’s life membership.
Whittaker joins the ranks of
current NZRL life members to
hail from Canterbury or who
have strong ties to the region,
including John Bray (2010), Ray
Haffenden (2013), John Coffey
(2018), Frank Endacott (2020)
and Reon Edwards (2022).
“I am privileged and it’s an
honour to get given the most
prestigious award available in
your sport.
“But if a young kid’s smiling
after having a game of footy,
whether he’s made a tackle or
scored a try, that’s where I get
my happiness out of really,”
Whittaker said.
We need your help to fill our beds.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre has
23 beds for tamariki to stay during
times of whānau stress or crisis. On
average just 17 of these beds are filled
due to resourcing constraints.
Every empty bed is a missed
opportunity to support a child in need.
Donate today to give Canterbury
tamariki a safe place to sleep.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre provides
short term emergency or planned respite care
for tamariki when they need extra support due
to complications at home.
Cholmondeley is an independent charity
and costs just under $3,000,000 per year to
run. 20% of this figure is met by Government
funding, and the remaining 80% comes from
the generous support of the Canterbury
community.
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
Strowan property
sells for $4m,
breaking
records
NEW HIGH: A Halton St home has sold for $4 million – a new record for Strowan, and the highest price paid for a property at auction in Christchurch
this year.
ever for a property in Strowan.
It is also the most expensive
property to sell at auction in
Christchurch this year.
The five-bedroom, twobathroom
home was bought by a
Canterbury family, who had been
looking for a year for their next
home, OneRoof reported.
local buyers in Harcourts
Gold’s auction room on
Thursday, including two
who actively bid on it.
A vendor bid of $2.5
million opened the
auction, which went up in
mainly $25,000 to $50,000
increments.
Harcourts Gold
Mark
Morrison
auctioneer Mark Morrison
said once the home was
announced on the market
at $3.8m, jus two buyers
battled it out.
The sale price exceeded
the vendors’ expectations
by $200,000.
“The bids were relatively
large and strong,”
Morrison told OneRoof.
The $4m sale price topped Harcourts Holmwood agent
Strowan’s previous record price Kathryn Picton-Warlow had been
of $3.76 million, paid at auction working with the buyers for 12
last November for a 1920s home months, searching for the ideal
on Normans Rd.
family home.
Morrison told OneRoof the The buyers were moving
Halton St house was a standout. from the country into the city
“It’s the sort of home that pops and were looking for a home
up on the market and buyers go, with space, which Halton St
‘Jeez, we’ve go to secure this’. offered.
That sort of home you jump on.” • Turn to page 3
