Tasty Morsels with Beverley Hudec Some Tiny Morsels to savour in July Tasty Morsels Wharf Bar revamp offers reasons to head to Manly New owners and a new way forward… and more reasons to head south and linger longer in Manly. When Artemus Group acquired iconic gateway Manly Wharf and its harbourfront pub with to-die-for views in April, one of the first changes has been to the menu. The Queensland group quickly brought onboard former Rockpool Bar and Grill culinary director Corey Costelloe to consult on local suppliers and produce and curate the pub’s new Mediterranean-style food. The focus reflects the pub’s surfside charm as well as showcasing quality and simplicity. In comes a selection of smaller grazing plates, side dishes, pub classics and weeknight specials, burgers and bowls and pizzas (made with 36-hour fermented dough). Standout dishes include whole butterflied whiting, a prawn salad with green papaya and a nahm jim dressing, and Mr Costelloe’s pick – grilled Clarence River baby octopus with lemon, chilli and oregano. Wharf Bar is open daily from 11am until late. Hang 10 and its unique gin twist Fancy a G and T made with leftover bread? After two and a half years, Marine Raynard and Deon Rowe have opened Hang 10 Distillery, their Warriewood distillery which specialises in sustainable craft spirits and beer. Pop in and try that signature Bakers Dozen gin, made from leftover bread and 13 organic botanicals. The cellar door opens Fridays and Saturdays. Three of a kind: Tasty Toastie time There’s nothing more satisfying on a cold Winter’s day than a tasty toastie. Sammy’s in Careel Bay pumps out the coffee and keeps hunger pains at bay with its selection of fancy-filled jaffles. Go for the slow-cooked bolognaise, mozzarella and basil, the bacon and egg with aioli or that all-time classic ham, mozzarella and tomato relish. The Hungry Ghost is a definitive member of Avalon’s laneway coffee club. It’s also the spot to order one of the knock-out jaffles this hole-in-thewall knocks out daily. Choices include bolognaise with feta and jalapeño, a classic Reuben and, for non-meat-eaters, there’s the umami punch of truffle mushroom and jarlsberg (left). Sunday Roast a Dunes highlight Head up to Palm Beach for lunch or a dinner date at Bistro Dunes. Over Winter, the restaurant is offering a $59 a head set menu, which includes tomato focaccia, olives and a choice of entree and main. The a la carte menu is also available for lunch and dinner. And, available now, the $45-a-head Sunday roast with a glass of wine or beer is back. Follow the well-trod toastie trail down to Newport Bowling Club, where you’ll find that the good folk at Good Folk Espresso have a couple of mighty toasties on the menu. The cheesy chipotle chicken with spinach and cherry tomatoes is a customer favourite. It’s perfect for a Winter breakfast or brunch, with or without a cup of coffee. 62 JULY 2024 The Local Voice Since 1991
