Trivia, but certainly not trivial
Question 1: For two points, where
on the Northern Beaches can you
have a great Friday night testing
your general knowledge?
The answer is Bookoccino at Avalon
which is holding gatherings on a semiregular
basis; June’s event, attended by
Pittwater Life, was brilliant fun, also
funny, as well as heart-warming. It felt
very typical of the Avalon community: a
blend of high brow, cool, and a sense of
togetherness.
Be warned though: the questions are
hard.
If a pub quiz has questions of a certain
standard, then this is very much a Trivia
Quiz OF Bookoccino as much as AT
Bookoccino. It’s not for the big-brained
and not for the faint-hearted.
Possibly the easiest question of the
night was: Name the three tenors, both
first names and surnames. (We got
Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingos
easily enough but couldn’t remember
Jose Carreras.)
It’s not: Who-is-the-current-State-of-Origin-coach-of-Queensland-type
questions.
After arriving we were put on a table
with four people we’d never met – a South
African lady and her English husband,
and two of their female friends. They
were happy to share the game with us
and we were all great chums by the end
of the evening – that is, around 9pm,
after arriving at 5.30pm.
In between were three rounds of questions,
including a music round that included
improvised karaoke. Which, after
a few glasses of wine, was hilarious.
Quizmaster Amanda did an amazing
job of keeping things light and fun.
Jules from Bookoccino buzzed about
making sure everyone was happy. And
in between question rounds there were
funky tunes spun on the record decks by
DJ Pete.
Alcoholic and soft drinks were available
to buy and you can bring your own
food (lots of people ordered pizza from
nearby Pocket Pizza for ‘half time’.)
The crowd was generally 50+ and after
a quiet 15 minutes or so waiting for
things to start, I wondered if it might be
a little stuffy. Two hours later the table
next to us were all singing Bonnie Tyler’s
‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ at the top of
their lungs.
Will you have fun? Absolutely! (Just
make sure you read up a bit first..!)
