July 2024
The 2024 Presidential election is just months away. As
someone who’s thinking about potentially buying or selling
a home, you’re likely curious about what effect, if any, the
election will have on the housing market. I've been working
in the real estate industry since the mid 80's, so I have
experienced a good number of election cycles - there is
some consistency to how the market reacts.
Historically, Presidential elections have had a small,
temporary impact on the housing market. There’s typically
a slight slowdown in home sales, mostly because people
feel uncertain and hesitant about making big decisions
during such a pivotal time. The slowdown is just temporary
though, with home sales bouncing back in December and
rising in the following year. In fact, after 9 of the last 11
Presidential elections, home sales went up the following
year.
Home prices do not typically drop during election years,
and after 7 of the last 8 Presidential elections, home prices
increased the following year.
Mortgage interest rates tend to decrease a bit in the
months before a Presidential election, which has happened
8 out of the last 11 election cycles. (And I know everyone is
watching for that right now!) Keep in mind, an interest rate
decrease usually triggers a home price increase (as the
prices are all about supply and demand.)
While it’s natural to feel a bit uncertain during an election
year, history shows the housing market remains strong and
resilient. If you have questions, please reach out to me
today. I'm here to help you navigate the market, election
year or not.

Pay it Forward
By: Mary Fellows / Guest Column
“
Pay it forward.” This is a quote we often hear
but how many of us actually put it to work?
My husband Patrick and I had three random
acts of kindness from strangers within the past nine
months and it has had a profound effect on us.
1. In line at Walgreens:. The only thing visible was that I was using
a cane. We got up to the cashier and I was ready to pay.
The cashier told us that the gentleman a few spots ahead of us had left
money to pay our bill. We tried to find him outside but he had already
gone.
My husband and I were stunned, but also grateful and made us aware
of “paying it forward.”
2. At lunch: Only a few weeks later we were enjoying lunch at one of
our favorite restaurants. When it came time to pay our bill, the waitress
asked if we had noticed the two gentlemen having lunch next to us,
which we did not.
Well, they paid our bill. My husband was wearing an Army hat so that
may have prompted them to treat us. Once again they were long gone
and we could not thank them in person.
3. And lunch again: The latest nice thing to happen to us was we
were having lunch and a man walked by and dropped $60 in the middle
of our table and said, “lunch is on me.” We again were so surprised. He
wanted no thanks and kept on his way.
We are well aware that there is so much ugliness around, but when
you realize that there are people out there just being kind, it is very
enlightening and special.
My husband and I have been blessed by the above random acts of
kindness and we will do our best to “pay it forward.” In our busy world
remember, just a kind act can make a big difference. We were lucky
enough to have this kindness bestowed on us.
God Bless America!
From Scam to Smile
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
“
Rana, it’s over.”
Sadly and with tears in her eyes, she agreed.
There would be no “Hershey.”
It was a very detailed and elaborate pet scam and my PILL (partner
in love & life) was almost a victim. It broke
her heart, but I’m very pleased to say that her
tale has a happy ending.
It started about three months ago when
Rana’s beloved dogs, Muffin and then golden
doodle Daisy went to that “Rainbow Bridge”
after being a part of her life for over a dozen
years.
I inherited the two canines when I moved
into Rana ‘s home. Based on seniority, I knew
my place between her and those “fur-babies.”
But now the house was dog-free. For Rana,
the silence was deafening. For Yours Truly
however, I was beginning to live my dream:
Life begins when the last child leaves for
college…and the dog dies.”
I sensed that my celebration would be
short-lived. Especially since my Ladylove
remarked (on more than one occasion –
way more than one) that she has never been
without a dog.
Within the week, she was online looking for dogs at rescues, animal
shelters and breeders. After many, many hours of intense research, she
found one.
The breeder’s (who we will call SOB) Facebook page stated that he
had a new litter of Shih Tzu pups. Instantly Rana fell in love.
As shown on the front page, it was a chocolate brown pup and SOB
advised (always by text or email) that she selected the “pick of the
litter.” Rana asked me “what do you think?” (as if I had a say) while
reminding me that her birthday was rapidly approaching.
She told SOB that “Hershey” would have a forever home in our Sun
City community.
“Not so fast,” SOB texted as he had questions and reservations.
SOB had to be sure that Rana was a “responsible” owner and that she
had the means to take care of the pup. That included (among other
requirements) a fenced-in backyard.
Rana faithfully and immediately answered all questions and even
provided photos to assure SOB that Hershey would be properly taken
care of.
And there was one more thing. Rana had to sign and return the
official “Certificate of Sales/Change of Ownership” document. You can
guess how fast Rana downloaded the form, signed it and told me to get
my fat butt off the recliner, and scan/send it back now.
SOB claimed that he lived in Elko and that Hershey would be
delivered on Monday. Preparing for her new addition, Rana visited
numerous pet stores purchasing various dog beds, toys, treats and the
required puppy food.
Seeing my PILL that Sunday evening was like watching my sons
anxiously awaiting Santa’s arrival on Christmas a generation ago.
Rana woke up early that Monday morning and when I entered the
kitchen an hour later, (and before my morning coffee) the look on her
face said it all. Per the very late night email, SOB’s mother suddenly
died and Hershey’s arrival might be delayed.
There was, however, a Plan B. SOB’s very
trusted and often used delivery company
would now transport Hershey.
The company required that the transport
be via an air-conditioned crate. Renting the
crate would cost $700.00, although there
would be a 90% refund.
As only my Rana could do, she then engaged
in a series of extended emails questioning
why there would be a fee; especially since the
air-conditioned crate would be under the sole
control of the delivery company.
Rana was fast becoming annoyed (and
concerned). After downing my 2 nd cup of
coffee, I contacted our Vegas Voice pet
columnist Annoula Wylderich for guidance.
Annoula advised that the so-call Certificate
was bogus. Additionally she had contacts in
Elko and offered (with our thanks and everlasting
appreciation) to check out SOB’s
address.
Within the hour it all came together. The residence was an abandoned
property, and then came the fatal, final blow from SOB and the delivery
company – payment had to be made by gift card.
Pets & Wildlife
By: Annoula Wylderich / Our Best Friends
Living in the southwest can raise certain
concerns, such as increased incidents
involving wild animals roaming into urban
neighborhoods. Many folks might be worried
about their pets’ safety.
Our wildlife prefers to avoid encounters with humans. However, as
their habitat continues to disappear due to development or climatedriven
change to their environment, they will venture out of their
territory in search of food for themselves and their cubs or pups. These
animals cannot distinguish between a bunny, rodent, cat, or a small
dog, when chasing prey.
Often, residents inadvertently attract wildlife to their neighborhoods
by leaving out pet food, while others may be intentionally feeding wild
animals. When this leads to negative outcomes, such as conflicts with
pets or humans, these same animals could likely end up being killed
by law enforcement or game wardens.
Following are suggestions for humane abatement that could help
save more than one pet or wild animal’s life:
1. Don’t feed
wildlife! The only
exception is in the
case of rural areas,
when wildfires and
natural disasters
occur that force
wildlife to seek
water and safer
ground. In those
situations, residents
are asked to leave
out only water and let the animals pass through.
2. Don’t leave pet food out unattended.
3. Don’t leave pets out unattended if you live near areas
where wildlife has been observed.
4. Never, never walk your dog off leash (this is an ordinance,
by the way).
If you encounter a coyote, exhibit some crazy behavior (for some of
us, this may come naturally): make loud noise, yell, wave your arms
over your head. If you are in your yard, bang pots.
You may have to repeat this on several occasions until they get the
message. It has worked.
More recently, citizens have reported hawks or other large
predatory birds carrying off small pets or injuring them. If you have
small animals, please be extra vigilant. Prevention is key.
Let’s all have a good, safe summer, and keep those emails coming,
particularly if you wish to see a specific animal-related topic
addressed.
former District Leader for the HSUS, and former State Director for
Animal Wellness Action. Contact her: wylderich@cox.net.
Our Medical System: Frank walked into a
Sun City doctor’s office and the receptionist
asked him what he had. He replied: “Shingles.”
So she wrote down his name, address, Medicare
insurance number and told him to have a seat.
Fifteen minutes later a nurse’s aide came out and asked him again
what he had. Once again, Frank answered “Shingles” so the aide took
down Frank’s height, weight, a complete medical history and told him
to wait in the examining room.
A half hour later, the nurse came in, and as before, asked Frank what
he had. “Shingles” he replied.
The nurse took Frank’s blood pressure and gave him a blood test as
well as an electrocardiogram and told him to take off his clothes and
wait for the doctor.
An hour later the doctor came in and found Frank sitting patiently
in the nude and asked him what he had. “Shingles” he stated for the
fourth time. The doctor asked, “where?”
Frank answered, “Outside on the truck. Where do you want me to
unload ‘em?”
My Medical Advice: My warning to all Vegas Voice readers. Don’t
wash your hair in the shower! I don’t know why I didn’t figure this
out sooner.
I used to use shampoo in the shower. When I washed my hair, the
shampoo ran down my whole body. I finally noticed that printed very
clearly on the shampoo label is this warning: FOR EXTRA BODY AND
VOLUME.
No wonder I have been gaining weight.
Luckily I found the solution. I got rid of that shampoo and now shower
with Dawn dishwashing soap instead. It’s label reads: DISSOLVES FAT
THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE.
Problem solved!
FINAL THOUGHT: The idea of living a long life appeals to everyone,
but the idea of getting old appeals to no one.

As the political season is about to heat up, I hope
you won’t mind if I vent about one of my pet
peeves -
medicine co-pays.
Like many seniors, I
am Type 2-diabetic. My
primary care physician
fights constantly to keep
my blood sugar level on
track. Fortunately, I have,
(or thought I had) excellent
health insurance.
Suffice to say, when the
news program announced
late in 2023 that co-pays for
diabetic medication would be
no more than $35 per 30 days
I was beyond relieved.
Now I know politicians
don’t lie, (cough, cough) but
aren’t “lies by omission” still a lie? This season we have heard political
ads from a certain senator boast on television that she pushed for a law
whereby diabetic co-pay would not exceed $35.
Later the words “insulin diabetic medication” was added, yet nothing
was mentioned about tier groups and how that would affect this law.
A perfect example is my own diabetic medication, which sadly are all
tier 3. One has a co-pay per 30 days of $145.00, another $265.00 until I
reach the level of “critical care.”
My cousin’s husband, on the other hand, who is almost 90 is living
on his Social Security. His diabetic medicine runs more than $1,000.00
per month.
Talking with him on this subject reminded me of all the times I would
get my mother’s prescriptions. I’d hand over her credit card and wonder
how people who had to make a choice of food or medication get by.
What Do
You Think?
Do you agree with our
columnists? Did anyone get
you angry, make you think
or simply put a smile on
your face? Please tell us by
forwarding your comments,
thoughts or suggestions
to Publisher Dan at: dan@
Medicine or Food?
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
I called my insurance company prior to writing this column and
asked why my co-pay was so insanely high. The agent explained that I
was “in the infamous donut hole, but not to worry, after I paid another
$5,000 out of pocket in copay,
I would be on “critical
care” and there would then
be no-copay.
Obviously, before I reach
the $5,000 co-pay out of
pocket it would most likely
be in mid-December and I
would have to start all over
again.
I fully understand the
costs of higher tier level
pharmaceuticals. After all,
developing these medicines
cost millions. The reality,
however, that lower income
people on a very tight income
must choose which necessity
to pay - rent, food, or medication, is inhumane.
Continued from Page 5
The Vegas Voice has been saying, screaming and warning for years
that you never, never, NEVER pay by gift cards. Rana (despite hoping
otherwise) had no choice but to recognize and accept that the entire
adventure was a scam. No dog, no Hershey.
Now the only thing worse than a brokenhearted Rana is a very angry
one. She’s now in favor of the death penalty and I have no doubt that
if SOB is ever caught, my Ladylove would happily strap him into that
chair and flip the switch…twice.
But as I said, there’s a happy ending. Two days later Rana arrived
home with “Jenni.”
Jenni is a Shichon, a
50/50 hybrid of a Shih
Tzu and Bichon. All I can
say is that if I ever had
a dog like that growing
up in the Bronx, I would
have been called a sissy
and laughed at (if not
worse).
Rana’s smile,
however, says it all.
Yes, one dream for
me disappeared, but
have to admit I’m living
another: Happy PILL,
It’s a Thrill.
Robbie Douglas’ Wife
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
For my loyal readers (and I thank you for
that), you know that each month I write about
one of my favorite memories which for the most
part is about my longtime friends
with whom I’ve worked.
This month I thought I’d write
about a NEW friend of mine! Her
name is Tina Cole and she is best
remembered for playing Katie Miller,
the wife of Robbie Douglas (Don
Grady) in the popular TV show “My
Three Sons” starring Fred MacMurray.
Tina had done a couple of episodes
in the show and did such a wonderful
job that she was then given a costarring
role as Robbie’s wife. The
other sons besides Grady were Tim
Considine, Stanley and Barry Livingston. By the way, Barry played the
“adopted” son, when in real life, he was the actual brother of Stanley!
Tina also had a recurring role in the TV show “Hawaiian Eye” as
well as roles in “The Rookies”, and “Adam 12.” Additionally, she was in
a subgroup quartet of The King Family Singers called “The Four King
Cousins.”
Not only is she a gifted actress and singer but she has a wonderful
book available on Amazon called “My Three Lives.” It is a must read
and I highly recommend it.
Even though we’re the same age and we both worked in Hollywood,
for some reason, we had never met! I met her this past year when we did
Star Trek in Italy!
I am so grateful to have
been invited to the Star Con
Italia Event in Italy last
month. It was one of the
most wonderful times I’ve
ever had.
The Italians were so
warm and welcoming and it
was a fantastic celebration
of Star Trek. Who knew that
Star Trek is huge in Italy?
The food, wine, love and
hugs kept coming and the
memory will be forever
imbedded in my heart.
Sure glad I learned that
“Grazie” means “Thank
You” , because I must have
said it a thousand times!
a wonderful convention called “Chiller.”
Then in April we were both at The Cherry Blossom Festival in
Missouri and I can tell you that she is definitely a fan favorite! She is
full of warmth, and love and just so much fun to be around.
We had dinner with some of the
other invited guests such as Stanley
Livingston, Cynthia Pepper (from
“Kissin’s Cousins” with Elvis), Sandy
Gimpel from Star Trek and Larry
Matthews who played son Ritchie on
The Dick Van Dyke show.
Did you ever meet someone
whom you instantly loved because
Blister Packs & Snack Bags
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
It may have taken me some time to get to this
subject but believe me when I say it’s a dilly!
Snack bags are a total nightmare to open! You
try with all your might to pull the seal apart and
then it tears on the side and all the chips fall out. Then you run around
the kitchen trying to pick them up before the dogs have swallowed a
handful each.
If the snack has onion, the panic sets in because dogs can’t have
onion so you rush to the internet to see what to do. Inevitably a visit to
the vet is arranged and that $3.00 bag of chips just cost you $60.
In the old days we got peanuts on a plane. I loved that! It was worth
the struggle to split the pack. Now the fear of peanut allergies has taken
away that little pleasure and we get salty cracker assortments instead.
The good news is that sometimes you can get extras and keep them
in your car for those days when you are starving and forgot to stop to
eat. Hopefully they aren’t crushed in your suitcase before you get home.
Now we move on to blister packs. Most of our OTC meds come in
those and you have to punch out the pill from the card.
If you’re sick and not very strong, you either wind up crushing the
pill trying to get it out or you use a scissor or knife to break the stupid
thing. When you finally get it, you discover the dose is for two and do it
all over again. At this point you’re exhausted.
This may not seem like much to some but when I’m sick, I’m cranky!
I don’t want to fight with my meds which brings up the dog issue again
because sometimes they just pop out and fall on the floor anyway.
I need glasses so looking for them before the pups find them is
challenging and I feel like crap anyway. Luckily, I have adjusted for
the most part.
Andrea brings a unique perspective on our tilted look at senior
life.
The Queen of Overthinking
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
admit it! I’m the queen of overthinking. And
I it drives me crazy—unfortunately, only in
retrospect. But I’m working on it.
How many of you can relate? How do you quiet
your overthinking mind? How do you solve the problems it creates?
Overthinking can come from a place of vulnerability and uncertainty,
mostly from things you can’t control. And that serves up a defense
mechanism that creates insecurities. Those insecurities trigger stress,
anxiety, depression, and paranoia and create an emotional state that
can lead to overthinking.
Can you eliminate
overthinking? Yes, but it first
requires self-awareness. The
more you know about you,
the better you can understand
what makes you overthink.
You think you know but
chances are you’ve never
stopped to challenge your
overthinking!
Now, step back and take
a deep breath. Try to reduce
some of your overthinking by asking yourself these questions and
targeting and understanding your triggers.
1. What triggers your overthinking?
2. Why does it make you overthink?
3. What ignites your overthinking?
4. Have you always been an overthinker?
5. When did you first become aware of your overthinking?
6. Is it worry, figuring things out, or overthinking?
It’s time to determine what’s at the core of your overthinking. Time
to ask yourself questions, confront issues, and deal with those things
being overthought. Take time to reflect on each one.
Challenge its existence and why you so easily accept and continue to
feed it. Then, purge it from your mind. Replace it with positive, healthy
thoughts and moments; then, allow them to dwell there.
Unfortunately, you’ll always overthink some things—and there are
some things that do require overthinking or a second thought. It’s
overthinking the things you can’t change or control that can keep you
unhappy and looking for unachievable solutions.
Just remember Positive Aging thrives when it’s motivated by positive
thoughts.
Editor’s Note: Nightlife Editor Sam
Wagmeister’s planned column for this month
will be published at a later date. He sat down
to compose the column on Father’s Day. Sitting at his computer,
thoughts of his dad came flooding back. Here, he shares those
thoughts.
was almost eleven years old the night my dad died suddenly. I hardly
I had time to get to know him.
He was a dentist with offices in downtown Peoria and East Peoria
(Il). The East Peoria office was across the bridge from the Caterpillar
Tractor factory, above a Buster Brown shoe store.
I’d go down to the office and play on the shoe store’s fluoroscope
machine before its dangers were known. Dad’s office served a racially
and economically
divided community.
I got my first dog
from one of my dad’s
East Peoria patients.
A roly-poly woman
carrying a wicker
basket hobbled up the
stairs to his office one
day in 1956.
“Dr. Wags,” she said,
“I owe you $5.00. I
try and try but I just
can’t come up with the
money. Last week, my
dog had puppies. Would
you take one of the
puppies for the $5.00?”
I had Woofie for the
next 18 years, 12 years
longer than I had my
dad.
As a 10-year old, I saw
death every week on Saturday morning cowboy shows. The same guys
died week after week; I knew that dead guys come back next Saturday.
It took years for me to comprehend that my dad wasn’t coming back
next Saturday.
My cousin Steve Wagmeister and I recently exchanged text message
memories. Steve reminisced: “(Your dad) received an emergency call
from a wife in a poor section of town. Her husband was in a lot of pain.
He drove to their house and took care of the guy.
“They thanked Dr. Wag and handed him $1.00, that’s all they had.
Your father looked at the dollar and said, ‘I’m sorry I don’t have change
for that’ and he wouldn’t accept the money.”
Shown is the last photo that I have of my dad, taken at Chicago’s
Museum of Science and Industry. That’s Steve in the passenger seat and
me behind the wheel.
UFO Encounter Altered
Childrens’ Lives
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
On September 14, 1994, there were UFO
sightings all over South Africa. On September
16, 1994, at the expensive Private Aerial School in Ruwa, Zimbabwe,
62 children (6-12 yrs. old) were playing outside while their teachers
were at a meeting.
They saw a UFO descend from the sky and land on a field near their
school. Some children noticed four-foot-tall aliens wearing black space
suits with substantial black eyes approaching them.
The creatures communicated with them telepathically. Their
message was about Earth’s pending environmental doom and warned
them that technology and pollution must stop.
Though the teachers and their parents were dismissive of their story
and the children’s different cultures gave rise to their interpretations,
their stories were accurate. And, when a BBC reporter, interviewed some
children, they were asked to draw what they saw. Their pictures and
stories were all similar.
Later, BBC reporter Tim Leach recruited John Mack, Head of the
Harvard Psychiatry Department and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author
who built a reputation investigating alien abductions. Due to his
credentials and experience it would bring credibility to his reporting
and get to the bottom of this issue. A few weeks later, Mack and a
filmmaker arrived.
He believed the children. Unfortunately, he died before he could put
it all together.
Mack’s family asked Director/Producer Randall Nickerson, who calls
himself a “witnesser” rather than a believer, to take over the project.
“I didn’t have to believe it because I saw it,” Nickerson explained.
Nickerson, considered to be a realist doesn’t like to discuss it, but he
had experienced a few UFO encounters when he was a child. He says he
was “extraordinarily isolated, and nobody could understand or explain
what he saw.”
Over 15 years, Nickerson and his team interviewed the children and
pored through hours of video interviews Mack had done with them.
He realized this was a much bigger story than a short film and the
strangest and most haunting UFO sighting ever recorded.
Men, Women & Garage Sales
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
If you want to witness the wide gap between
males and females concerning neatness, effort,
and business sense attend a garage sale.
First, 99% of the time when a woman is running any garage sale it
is because the man is (a) still in bed, or (b)
fishing, hunting, or watching an old Chuck
Norris film. But let’s give men the benefit of
the doubt and say that (occasionally) they
do organize garage sales; in which case, the
contrasts with women are quite stark.
Women will mark a price on every item -
and it’s seldom negotiable. But if a man is
in charge, no prices can be found. Instead,
when asked the price for something, the
man will say, “How much do you want to
give me ‘cuz I just want to get rid of it.”
Another noticeable difference between male and female garage sale
organization is that women will separate clothes into different piles
on tables: jeans, shirts, jackets, etc., all neatly folded. Plus, they will be
organized according to clothes for men, women, and children.
Whereas a man in charge will simply throw all the clothes into one
big pile like a giant bowl of spaghetti . . . on the lawn . . . where the
dog loves to do its business . . . and just after the sprinkler system has
watered the grass.
One exception to this male lack of neatness at garage sales is on
display when it comes to the man’s ball caps which he typically
organizes on a table in perfectly straight rows… but off to the side to
discourage customers.
If you do happen to approach his caps,
the man will hustle over saying, “Oh, you
don’t want that greasy old NAPA Auto cap,
do you?” while snatching it from you and
slapping it on top of the other three rescued
caps already on his head.
Another male/female garage sale
difference is that women, who I’m sure had
the best intentions when they purchased
them, will eagerly display their barely used
bun buster, stomach tucker, or leg-toner
devices for sale.
While men, only after hours of deep depression and soul-searching,
will reluctantly offer to sell their KISS memorabilia collection.
May I Borrow Your Brain?
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
May I borrow your brain? No, we’re not talking
lobotomy here.
I just need
some advice. I’m out of step. I need a
field guide to cope with today’s world.
Like what’s with all this woke stuff?
Why do they want to change all our
pronouns? You are who you are and
that’s it! I’m too old to start learning
new pronouns. Give me a break!
And what the heck is wrong with
people nowadays? What happened to
common sense and courtesy? Some
folks haven’t heard of the nine-to-nine
rule, I guess. You know, never make a
phone call before 9 am or after 9 pm.
The other day, my phone rang at
5:30 in the morning! Fearing the worst,
I jumped out of bed to answer. A cheery
voice said, “ Hello, this is Archie. How are you today?”
My sleepy brain struggled with that question for a minute, then gave
up. I tried to remember if I even knew an Archie. “Archie who?” I asked.
“Archie from the health company. You have Social Security, don’t you?
Has your new Social Security card arrived yet?”
“What?” I was stunned! It was 5:30 am! “Would you please go get your
card?”
“No!” My foggy brain began to clear,
and annoyance set in. “Archie, where
are you? What time is it there? It’s barely
light here.
“Did your mother teach you to get
up in the middle of the night and start
calling people at the break of dawn?”
Silence…
“Archie, you woke me up! What in
blazes is wrong with you? Besides, my
card is none of your business!”
Ring tone in my ear. That man
had the audacity to hang up on me! I
slammed the phone down.
My bedroom door flew open, and my
visiting granddaughter entered. “Nana,
are you okay? Why are you shouting?”
“A nincompoop salesman just woke me up!” “Nana, it’s spam,” she
said quietly.
I squinted. “Spam? Honey, do you really want a Spam sandwich at this
hour of the morning?”
See! It’s your call…What do I do?
When I was a child, July was magical. School
was over and summer promised so many
special delights - the beach, the sand, and the ice
cream truck (with its tinkling bell) promising cold, creamy treats.
All loomed magically in my thoughts. Everything seemed to start
with the Fourth of July, fireworks, picnics, backyard barbecues, trips to
the mountains with its beautiful lakes.
Every Fourth started with a parade, a line of young men holding
the flag high, with lines of old men holding flags and marching in
uniforms long unworn, standing upright and proud, following them.
Next came the
16
Fourth of July Memories
July 2024
decorated floats,
followed by vehicles
of all kinds, wagons,
cars, trucks, their
occupants waving
happily to the crowd.
Following them came
the high school band
marching proudly,
with baton twirling
drum majorettes. And
last, but never least,
the firetruck tooting its
horn with the firemen
throwing candy to the crowd.
I especially loved the fireworks spectacular that lit up the evening sky.
The oohs and aahs that greeted each new colorful and brilliant display
made it even more awe inspiring.
It was always a special day from beginning to end and I remember
the delicious treats that seemed to only belong to summer - cotton
candy, creamsicles, taffy that stuck in your teeth and every flavor of
fudge. Was anything better than hot dogs covered in mustard, cold
potato salad, and hot corn dripping with butter?
Nowadays, I still love parades, still cry as the flag goes by, and still
love to watch the sky light up with fireworks. And I still love a backyard
barbecue but prefer different foods.
I made this dish for the last barbecue I attended, and nothing was
left. Give it a try.
Prosciutto Purses – Makes 20 Pieces: Slice 10 pieces
of Prosciutto Di Parma in half crosswise. Place one 1” square of
cantaloupe or honeydew melon in center of the half. Gather ends of
the Prosciutto and bring them together to form a purse with a rounded
bottom and a ruffled top.
Tie a piece of green chive around the neck of the purse. Quartered
ripe figs can also be used. Serve cold.
A New Column for
Curious Senior Sippers
By: Corinne Kovalsky / Wine Not
It is no secret that those of us 55+ love our wine.
Boomers remain at or near the top of the list
when it comes to wine consumption.
But, with more than 10,000 varieties grown around the globe, and
a complex vocabulary all its own, it can be intimidating. No wonder
you might feel overwhelmed in a wine store or when ordering from a
restaurant wine list.
It is easy to buy what you know and be comfortable with your choices,
but it’s fun to branch out if you dare. That’s why I am writing this
column. I have but
one goal: to demystify
wine and make it
more approachable
and enjoyable.
We will focus on
a practical aspect
of wine, from
understanding the
critics’ rating systems
to serving/storing wine
and picking glassware,
just to name a few.
That’s where you come
in. I want to make this
interactive, so please
send me your wine
questions.
Each month we will
answer a couple in a bid to make us all a little smarter. You can send
your questions to: winenot.column@gmail.com. If I don’t know the
answer, I’ll tap a stable of savvy, local wine folks for help.
One of my favorite wines to drink this summer is a Greek varietal
called Assyrtiko from the island of Santorini. It is light-bodied, with
light alcohol. It tastes of citrus and sea salt.
It pairs exceptionally well with Oysters, Calamari, Greek salads, and
Mezze platters. It is also refreshing on its own. Total Wine sells a couple
of brands ranging from $13 to $25.
Look for Hermes or GWC Flowers in the “other whites” aisle, but
don’t buy too much. Leave some for the rest of us to enjoy!
I discovered Assyrtiko when I went to a Greek restaurant on the Strip
and consulted the sommelier. Also known as the wine steward, he asked
me what types of wine I liked and what we would be having for dinner.
His recommendation turned out to be a match made in wine heaven.
Cheers!
Corinne Kovalsky’s passion for the wine lifestyle began when she
worked at a boutique winery in an emerging wine region. Today
it continues through wine and food tourism. You can reach her at:
winenot.column@gmail.com.
Mobility Vehicles
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
As we age, our driving needs change. While we
all would love to own a Chevrolet Corvette,
the realities of egress
(getting in and out of
the vehicle) may not be compatible with our
aging bodies.
For those of us with mobility issues, up to
and including wheelchairs, there are offerings
from the manufacturers that make it easy to
get around, no matter what our challenges
are.
Ford and General Motors are doing a great
job offering specially designed vehicles to help with mobility issues.
When you purchase a Ford vehicle that fits your accessibility needs (most
SUVs and vans can be modified), Ford will provide a reimbursement
payment up to $1,000 depending on the adaptive equipment you need
from a qualified vehicle modifier.
Equipment includes items like door openers, parking brakes, power
assist seats, lift devices, wheelchair restraints and more. For more
information visit ford.com/accessibility.
GM also offers a Chevrolet accessibility discount of up to $1,500,
much like Ford, plus it adds two years of the OnStar connectivity
Essentials Plan. GM also offers many of the same equipment to serve
your needs.
Visit Chevrolet.com/accessibility for more information as well
as which vehicles support those accessories. I like its motto that
‘’accessibility doesn’t mean sacrificing style.”
Baby Boomers still account for the majority
of new vehicle purchases today. It’s nice to know
that our buying power means something, and
we can drive with ease and dignity no matter
our age or physical abilities.
The Mentalist Mystifies
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
Gerry McCambridge - The Mentalist at
the V Theater behind Planet Hollywood is
entertaining, mystifying, and fun. See his show
and you’ll say, “How the heck does he do
that!?” I can tell you one thing -- I don’t
know! Gerry’s tricks are amazing. He has
been performing in Vegas for 19 years.
This month, he will reach an impressive
milestone: 5,000 shows.
The small theater seats less than 200
people - up close and personal. As you enter,
you are asked to fill out a card with some
questions . Like when will I go on another
vacation or who was my first boyfriend.
Gerry tells the audience, “My job is to
screw with your mind.” He does. He tells
us he is going to use maybe 75% of the
audience.
He quotes statistics about odds of getting things right and talks about
intuition. The odds are 48 to one that I can do this. Then the odds are
288 to one as he talks about intuition.
Gerry picks a clump of cards from the box, Crumbles them in his
outstretched hand and calls a name. He proceeds to tell that individual
some personal stuff like the names of their kids or the first boyfriend.
It is all done with a thread of humor as this likable guy blows our
minds. Intuition? Trickery? Super powers? All of the above? Gerry says
he looks for clues like hand and finger gestures.
He has a woman hold her hands behind
her and place an object in one of her hands.
She moves the hands around front and he
tells her – and all of us – which hand holds
the object.
Then she does it again. And he gets it
right again. “This is like taking candy from
a baby “ he says.
A highlight of the show is the staple gun
routine. Four staple guns. Three have empty
cartridges. One by one, the Mentalist fires
the guns against his body. Will blindfolded
Gerry shoot himself in the head with the
loaded one?
Another notable trick involve a rubix cube and a tile rendering of
Albert Einstein. You really have to see The Mentalists to experience this.
I highly recommend The Mentalist as good quality entertainment.
Go see this show AND ENJOY.
* And one more thing: Gerry McCambridge will be
honored with a star on Las Vegas Blvd. In commemoration
of his 5,000 th show, The Mentalist Gerry McCambridge will
be honored with a star on July 31 at 8 P.M. on the Las
Vegas Boulevard in front of the Paris Casino. He is the first
WHY DOES IT HURT TO PINCH? IS THERE A FIX?
By:Ryan Grabow, MD / Help My Hands!
“Help My Hands!” - our column on common
hand conditions has returned.
WHAT CAUSES THUMB PAIN WHEN I
PINCH?
Pain at the base of the thumb or thumb pad
when you try to pinch is a very common
complaint, and is typically due to thumb joint
arthritis, also called, Basal Joint Arthritis.
Symptoms are variable
Although the pain may be worst at those
areas, it may also feel like your whole hand
aches or the pain may radiate up your
forearm.
Some patients may only experience a mildly
annoying crunchy, grinding, or shifting sensation with thumb use.
Others have so much pain with thumb use they have limited ability to
use their hand! Swelling and stiffness of the thumb and weakness of
pinching and grip is also common with this condition.
WHAT CAUSES THUMB ARTHRITIS?
While a trauma to the joint can lead to arthritis,
the most common cause of thumb arthritis is simply
normal hand use, gender, and genetics (yes - it
does run in families). Forceful hand use, typing, or
writing don’t put you at higher risk. You did not cause
it - you inherited it!
While many men do get thumb arthritis, it is much more common in
women, with a majority of women developing this arthritis by the time
they are in their 60s. Thankfully, not everyone who develops arthritis
experiences pain. To confirm this diagnosis, a physical exam and
xrays are typically all that is needed.
HOW DO WE TREAT THUMB ARTHRITIS?
If oral anti-inflammatories and occasional brace
use do not help, a steroid injection to the joint is
typically very effective.
Ultrasound Guided Steroid Injection
At Concierge Carpal Tunnel we are the only hand clinic utilizing
ultrasound guidance technology to ensure your steroid injection is
accurately placed into you joint - this not only provides an effective
injection but decreases injection pain as well. Typically results in three
to five months of pain free thumb use. If injections are effective, you
can keep getting injections to the joint as long
as they are at least 3 months apart. There is
no negative effect to your joint from a steroid
injection and there is no life-time limit to
number of injections to a joint. If an injection
doesn’t help or you want a more lasting solution, you do have surgical
options. There are many variations of thumb arthritis surgery and most
involve removing one of the arthritic bones and stabilizing the thumb
joint. Thankfully, most never need surgery for pain relief!
It’s Never Too Late!
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
read this from an anonymous author and
I thought it best to share: In the blink of an eye,
another day is gone; another week is gone;
another month is gone; another year is gone. Time marches on. It’s
never too late to start something new.
About 3 weeks ago, I started Hawaiian hula lessons - something I’ve
been wanting to do for some time. It’s so enjoyable and I’m learning
from a hula expert! Although I’ve been a dancer my whole life, I felt it’s
always best to extend my knowledge and learn something challenging!
Yes, it really is challenging and I have to work hard at the correct
hand and hip movements. Going into my 80th year of my trip around
this earth in a few months, I need to challenge this brain to learn new
stuff. Hawaiian Hula is certainly not easy, but since doing my Zumba
classes for the past 16+ years, the hips are at least cooperating!
Understanding Chronic
Kidney Disease
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
Chronic kidney disease is a problem many
people face as they get older. The kidneys serve
the crucial roles in the body of cleaning toxins and metabolic wastes
and helping maintain the correct chemistry and pH in the blood.
If the kidneys begun to function less efficiently, it can cascade into
further and much more serious problems in the body.
To oversimplify the process, the kidneys serve as a filter, cleaning
out what the body does not need or want and keeping essential
resources. This process is fulfilled by the nephrons, the functional unit
of the kidneys.
In the average human being there are about 2.2 - 2.5 million
nephrons between the two kidneys.
The first part of the nephron is called the glomerulus. It is a literal
filter separating the larger structures in the blood such as red blood
cells, white blood cells and larger protein from the fluid (plasma) and
Another task lurking for me is to challenge my brain and learn to
play a ukulele. I admit the ukulele is a lot more difficult than learning
the hula, but I will not give up! My ukulele books are staring at me
each day to start lessons.
I was given my yearly job interview last month at one of my jobs.
I was noted as having endless energy! Yes, that’s me - the “energizer
bunny!” I love all my jobs, ushering at the Smith Center, teaching
aerobic and balance classes in my community and choreographing
my dance group.
My belief is to not get “stale,” keep challenging my body and brain
and learn new stuff!
Please don’t allow yourself to get stale, challenge yourself for new
things, even if it’s so difficult to start. Take each day as it comes and one
day BINGO it all comes together!
POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!
smaller molecules including wastes that are carried in the blood.
The filter allows the larger - and necessary molecules to be retained
in the blood while filtering out allowing smaller wastes that pass into
the nephron.
The amount of fluid that filters through the glomerulus per unit
time is called the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR in medical terms)
and is one of the major indicators of kidney disease. An eGFR of 90 or
higher is considered healthy and means that a good amount of plasma
is being filtered through the kidneys so they can function properly.
An eGFR of 60 - 89 means there is mild loss of function in the kidneys
and is a sign that a serious problem may be developing eGFRs of 30 -
59, 15 - 29 or below 15 demonstrate progressively worse functioning of
the kidney and more serious disease.
While there are many possible causes to what may damage the filter
in the glomerulus, high blood pressure and diabetes are two of the
leading causes of chronic kidney disease. Chronic inflammation in
the kidneys also damages nephrons over time and leaves behind only
scar tissue.
Strength Training for Seniors
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
Hey gang! Strength training is a game-changer
for seniors!
As we age, maintaining
physical health becomes increasingly
important, and one of the best ways to do this
is through strength training. Often overlooked
in favor of gentler exercise, strength training
offers numerous benefits that can significantly
improve quality of life for seniors.
Strength training helps maintain muscle
mass, which naturally declines with age. This
loss of muscle can lead to a decrease in strength
and mobility, making everyday tasks more challenging.
By engaging in regular strength training, seniors can slow down
this muscle loss and, in some cases, even regain some of that lost
muscle. This translates to better functional fitness, allowing for greater
independence in daily activities.
Another significant benefit is the impact on bone health. Osteoporosis,
a condition characterized by weak and brittle bones, is a common
concern as we age. Strength training stimulates bone growth and
increases bone density, reducing the risk of fractures and improving
overall bone health.
Additionally, exercise, in general, is known to boost mood and
reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, but strength training, in
particular, has been shown to improve cognitive function.
One of the most practical benefits is the enhancement of balance
and coordination. Falls are a leading cause of
injury among seniors, but strength training
exercises that focus on the core and lower body
can significantly reduce the risk of falls.
Incorporating strength training into your
routine doesn’t mean you have to lift heavy
weights. Bodyweight exercises, resistance bands,
and light dumbbells can all be effective tools as
long as you learn how to use them effectively.
The key is consistency and ensuring exercises are performed correctly
to avoid injury.
Remember we have great senior programs and discounts! It’s never
too late to start, and the rewards are well worth the effort.
Stay Cool by Wearing Linen
By: Lisa Kemmerling / Fashion Couture
For many years, I’ve been told that linen
keeps you cool in the high heat of summer.
Every spring and
summer season,
the introduction of new linen pieces
arrive in the stores, and much to my
chagrin, the urge to buy or not to buy a
piece of linen clothing comes to mind.
This fashion consultant has fought
purchasing linen for years, not because
it’s not great looking on both men and
women, but because it wrinkles and
subsequently looks messy and unkempt.
As the temperatures soar over 100+
in Nevada, that alone has made the
decision this year to finally give in to what all the fashion designers term
as the “magic clothing for summer.”
Linen fabrics go as far back as 30,000 years ago and style/fashions
can be dated back to 7000 BCE. During Ancient Egyptian times, the elite
Pharaohs chose this fabric for the fact that it kept them cool during the
scorching desert climate.
During World War II, linen was used for tarps and army equipment due
to its strength and durability. As the 20th century rolled around, linen was
considered chic and used in loungewear for around the poolside.
Moving into the 21st century many people purchase linen not only
for its cooling effect but also because it’s
high quality, sustainable and now, very
affordable.
Everyone seems to be jumping on the
linen bandwagon, with stores like Gap,
Nordstrom and JCPenney offering men’s
slacks, shirts and sheik jackets. For the
ladies - jumpsuits, flowy pants, skirts and
blouses to name a few.
With a full sheet of summer activities
planned, including overseas travel,
perhaps now is the time that I’ll give in
and follow the linen crowd, if for nothing
else to stay cool.
With summer in full swing, even if you’re not
out sunbathing, it’s pretty hard to avoid sun
exposure. We always think about protecting our
skin with sunscreen or
sunscreen tinted moisturizers, but our hair
needs to be protected too.
When I was younger, I did terrible things
to my hair in the sun - lemon juice, Sun-In,
even peroxide. Always looking for those nice
highlights.
Of course at the same time I was also
doing terrible things to my skin - baby oil,
sometimes adding iodine, yikes! And then
baking for hours.
Older and wiser… well, certainly older, I
no longer do any of those things and spend
my time trying to protect what I can.
I spend a lot of time outside and always wear sunblock and a visor.
What I didn’t think about was the top of the visor allowing full sun
exposure on my hair.
Not only can the sun be hard on older hair but it can cause hair color
to break down and fade. If you use hair color with peroxide, as it lightens
from the sun, it can also turn brassy. If the color fades faster you need to
24
Sunscreen & Hats are Essential
July 2024
color more often and that’s not optimal.
Outside, switching to a full coverage hat can help protect our hair.
Wearing hats can be fun but not always practical so I went in search of a
product that could help.
What I learned is there is no SPF to use
on hair, but there are products that claim to
have UV protectant shields to help.
The company I found with the most
options is called Color Wow. They have
products for many hair concerns.
I have been using a product called Pop &
Lock High Gloss Finish, 22.00. It claims to
smooth frizz, seals split ends, prevent color
fade, and has UV + heat protection.
I like the product and it smells nice. I’m
hopeful that using this product coupled with
wearing a hat will help prevent color fading
and protect my hair from future damage. If you decide to try this, use a
very small amount as a little goes a long way.
Enjoy our summer sunshine but remember, sunscreen and hats are
important!
Last month, my mom and I took a 24-day car
ride where we drove 8,129 miles across 26
states! There were so many times that we uttered
the words, “So beautiful!”
Yes, the USA is a gorgeous land. I feel so blessed to live here, not only for
the beauty of the land, but also for the freedoms that I enjoy!
I also admit that it makes me nervous when religious faith comes up
in conversation pertaining to patriotism or love of country. Many people
believe that the founding fathers built a Christian nation.
Some may want this to be true, but it’s simply not. John Adams wrote
“The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish
or a Mohammedan nation.” (The Treaty Of Tripoli November 4, 1796.)
So what is our place as people of faith living in this country? No matter
what our faith may be, I believe we can all find commonality in the fact
that we are free to worship and participate in our faith as we wish.
We are also free not to! We are free! For this fact, let’s be grateful!
As people of faith, instead of trying to take over the rule of this country,
let’s look for ways that we can co-exist with all people. Judaism teaches:
“Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18).
Jesus taught, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with
all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first
commandment. And the second is like: You shall love your neighbor as
yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
(Luke 10: 25 - 27).
The Qur’an tells us, “Because everyone is created by God Almighty, the
Maker of all, humans must treat one another with full honor, respect, and
loving-kindness” (Qur’an 17:70).
As we celebrate the birth of our nation, let’s simply be grateful. Let’s do
our best to show our love for God (as we understand God) by loving each
other.
It’s all about LOVE. Let’s live that truth!
Welcome to Bare-adise
By: Lauren Tallman / Erotic Las Vegas
The sweltering hot days getting you down? Do
you dream of cool breezes floating around
your steaming body? Take the plunge!
This summer, nudism-focused travel company Bare Necessities Tour &
Travel announced an 11-day Caribbean cruise for senior nudists on the
Norwegian Pearl. It advertises “luxury lifestyle nude cruises” to exotic
locales including the Greek Islands, the French Riviera, Rio De Janeiro,
and Turkey.
Temptation Cruises offers a “Red Room” where anything goes, and Bliss
Cruises sails the entire Caribbean, from Mexico to Haiti to Jamaica. Plus,
you can prance around the ship’s open decks, saunas, and playrooms, in
the buff.
“Nudists, sometimes called naturists, embrace their nude bodies
because they believe there are benefits in doing so,” website Honeymoons.
com declares. “The idea is that it creates a connection between the mind,
body, and the
nature of
the world.
Naturist
cruises are
non-sexual,
and you can
walk around
n e a r l y
anywhere on
the ship, fully nude.”
Nude cruises for seniors usually enforce clothing requirements while
at port and in the dining halls, but most bare-skinned bon voyages only
require that you wear a smile.
Bare Necessities advertises: “We support the belief that sexuality is not
a state of undress, but rather, a state of mind. Social nudity is not a sexual
activity, and we strive to dispel the misconception that it is anything but
natural and beautiful.”
According to healthline.com, there are many benefits for baring it all:
better sleep, improved body-image and self-esteem, a happy outlook on
life, and it can encourage intimacy.
Be one of the twinkling bodies in cool pools, soak in hot tubs, ride on
waterslides and enjoy a movie under the stars and dance the night away.
But make sure you get to dock at tropical ports with secluded beaches that
don’t require attire on their shores. There, you can bask in the sun, au
naturel, and get that “all around” tan you always dreamed of…
Just try not to giggle, or jiggle when during the mandatory muster
safety drills, passengers line up wearing life jackets… and nothing else.
Is Your Estate in Order?
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
Isn’t it about time you finally got your estate in
order? Have you set up your family’s living trust
yet? (or kept up-to-date the one you have?)
These days, most homeowners are getting a Living Trust and rightly so,
because the Living Trust is the preferred estate planning vehicle. But few
are asking, “Exactly what kind of Trust vehicle am I getting?”
You see, when you buy a car and drive it off the lot, you’ll know if it’s
a lemon in a matter of a months. But when will you know whether your
Living Trust is a lemon?
Probably years from now, when you (or your spouse) are ill, disabled or
pass away -- when you and your loved ones most need the Trust to work
and when it’s too late to fix it!
Unfortunately, you may have been led to believe that all Living Trusts
are the same and the only difference is price. The truth is - All Living
Trusts are not created equally!
You and your loved ones can’t afford to just wait and see if the Living
Trust you’ll get (or have) is a “ticking time bomb.” Now is the time to
find out:
1. How a properly drafted Living Trust may make your loved ones’
inheritance virtually lawsuit, creditor and divorce-proof! (A Living Trust
that merely avoids probate and estate taxes isn’t good enough anymore!)
2. When one married partner dies, does your trust protect the
survivors’ assets to last their entire life against all creditors including the
government?
3. Why your Living Trust plan must be set up and maintained properly
or it may not avoid the expenses, delays and headaches of Probate Court
after you’ve gone.
4. Why the wrong person may be in charge of your affairs if you’re ill
or disabled and you may not be able to replace them!
5. If you’re married, how the wrong type of Trust can force your
surviving spouse to endure needless paperwork, legal and accounting
fees!
6. Why it’s important for your Trust to be able to adapt to the changed
situations and needs of your loved ones - after you’re gone! (such as
unexpected financial setbacks, illness, disability, or drug or alcohol
problems!)
Whether your estate is $250,000 or $2,500,000 (or more) we invite
you to attend an eye-opening and thought-provoking estate planning
seminar. Gain the knowledge that you need to make informed and
intelligent decisions.
Then, take advantage of a discounted consultation with one of our
attorneys to review your existing Living Trust or to discuss how a new
Trust plan may be custom-designed. Isn’t it worth an hour of your time to
make sure you, your spouse, family and loved ones get the protection you
deserve? See the below for the seminar date and time most convenient for
You hate me because I am a Jew. Do you know
what that means? It means that I worship God
and want to live by the 10 Commandments and
adhere to the Old Testament – so far, not so much
for you to get upset
about.
True the New
Testament is not in
my life but the good
news is that being a
Jew means to love thy
neighbor as thy self.
Being a Jew means to
live by Tikkun Olam –
to repair the world (not
tear it down). It is a
Jewish concept defined
by acts of kindness.
Ever take note
of when there are
worldwide disasters,
that the tiny nation
of Israel sends help in
the form of searchers
or medical professionals? It is because of the learned concept in Jewish
homes of Tikkun Olam. None of those volunteers to far off places ever
ask the religion or philosophy of the victims – they are just there to help.
Then there is Tzedakah “righteousness”– used to signify charity. Jews
You Have My Pity
July 2024
Guest Speaker
Our Vegas Voice columnist Liz Breier, address the Rotary Club of
Green Valley last month at Wildhorse Golf Club. As guest speaker,
she spoke about “To Be A Jew in America.”
are charitable and it is taught to their children from the time they are
very young.
Jewish children traditionally have Tzedakah boxes – to save money to
give to charities. In their religious schools, they are encouraged to drop
their coins in the classroom’s Tzedakah box as well.
Then there is
“Rachmones.” We
grew up witnessing
the significance of
what it means to have
empathy for another
soul. We learn to
have compassion for
another human being.
Israeli hospitals
do not ask a sick
individual’s religion or
background or if they
can pay. If someone,
Jew or Gentile or
Muslim, is in need
of medical attention,
they are cared for by
the Israeli doctors who
have Rachmones.
So how did the Jews, those that want to give to others, become the group
that the protestors want to see killed?
The basic tenets of Judaism for the religious and non-observant alike,
Tikkun Olam, Tzedakah, Rachmones are prevalent in the everyday life of
a Jew. So, I cannot help but wonder why anyone feels it necessary to end
the lives of every Jew – calling for another Hitler, another Holocaust, an
Intifada, shouting “death to Israel”, “death to Jews” “More October 7”.
How much red paint splattered at schools, on statutes and homes
of prominent Jews, how much spitting in our face, blocking our path,
threatening our very survival, do we have to tolerate before they realize
that their religion, their upbringing, their families also taught them
charity, pity, empathy, kindness and to try to help heal the world?
If they were not raised that way, then they are the ones to be pitied for
they must have been raised with hatred and venom in their hearts and I
have Rachmones for those poor souls.
*This month cannot go without acknowledging the heroic maneuvers
of the IDF and Shin Bet to gain the release of 4 hostages in Gaza. My joy
is limited by the fact that approximately 120 hostages that are believed to
be alive (33 of whom are children) remain in captivity.
It is reported that roughly an additional 43 of the hostages are no
longer alive. I pray that my next article will be a full-on celebration of
release of all remaining hostages as well as the remains of those whose
families deserve the closure of a funeral.
Vet2Vet: Lou, you had a lengthy career in the
Army. What about it do you miss the most?
Lou Rothenstein: I believe it is the camaraderie,
teamwork and mentoring others. Watching junior
leaders grow and develop new skills.
V2V: Did you choose Military Intelligence as the
field to work in, or were you selected?
LR: I did grunt recon things - observing and reporting. I studied admin
things reading and writing reports. I was in a warm part of the Cold War.
It all came together when the intelligence field grew in the ‘60s and
there was an old combat soldier willing to train me. He was a real mentor.
V2V: I know you have served veterans in many capacities since retiring.
N2S2 | NNSS | NEVADA TEST SITE (NTS)
How did your education in the field of psychology help in these endeavors?
LR: I saw PTSD before it had a name. Taking care of soldiers was
my job as a senior NCO and that was an easy move
to learn more to provide better counsel to help
veterans.
V2V: What military expertise did you gain on
active duty that has been your greatest asset after
retiring?
LR: Army Leadership Principles. Simply put -
improve yourself, provide a good example, take
care of others and challenge them to grow.
V2V: What are some of the ways our senior vets
can better face the challenges of aging, especially if
they have service-connected disabilities?
LR: I believe the best and most rewarding way is
to help other vets work through those challenges.
Sharing experiences, providing counsel and
For genealogists, Independence Day offers
a poignant
opportunity to delve
into the rich history of
our military ancestors
and honor their sacrifices.
Start your quest by gathering information
from family records, heirlooms and documents
passed down through generations. Pay close
attention to old letters, photographs, discharge
papers and any memorabilia that may provide
clues about your ancestor’s military service.
Next, consult online databases and archives
dedicated to military records. Websites like
and the National Archives offer a wealth of
resources, including muster rolls, pension
records, and service histories.
This rampant identity theft is an
When so-called computer experts
are queried as to what can be done
Really? Tell that to the two local
Yes, it’s simplified question. The real question is what can we do to
Tracing Your Military Ancestors
The Cybersecurity Conundrum
July 2024
received a copy of discharge paperwork after World War II. The copy did
have fire and water damage around the edges. I was lucky.
Military service records can provide
invaluable insights into your ancestor’s
experiences, including battles fought, injuries
sustained, and commendations received.
As you uncover the stories of your military
ancestors, take time to reflect on their courage,
resilience, and sacrifice.
Consider visiting their gravesites or
memorials to pay your respects and honor
their memory. Share their stories with future
generations, ensuring that their legacy lives on
for years to come.
On this Independence Day, let us remember
and honor the countless men and women who
served and sacrificed for the freedoms we hold
dear. By tracing our military ancestors, we not
only connect with our past but also reaffirm
our commitment to preserving the values that
make our nation great.
protect ourselves from being hacked? There are some actions we can take.
One is to check all your accounts daily. You would be surprised how
many people don’t do this.
Not just your credit cards but your checking, investment accounts.
Doing this, I was able to detect
fraudulent use of two of my credit
cards. They were sneaky too. They
charged a meager amount from
$5.99 to $19.99 on a purchase that
I did not authorize.
I immediately contacted the credit
card companies and closed my
accounts forthwith (and yes they
credited my accounts). I have also
had one of my accounts hacked
three times over the past year.
Other actions you can take is to
pay for identity theft protection.
Perhaps your credit card issuers offer similar protection.
One thing I know is we will never be able to depend upon our
government to protect you. Hell, they can’t protect themselves! The
responsibility rests solely with us!
Avoiding Summer Travel
Trips
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
For those of you who travel with the Vegas
Voyagers on our various trips, you may have
noticed that we tend to stay away from traveling during the summer.
We also always stay away from running trips during the holiday
seasons, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Passover.
These times are for sure, the busiest travel time of the year. Certainly,
during the holidays Grandmas and Grandpas want to be with the family.
So staying away from these times make sense for our Vegas Voyagers.
Why, however, do we avoid summer (read June, July and August)
time travel? Well, simply stated, after the most busy holiday periods, the
summer is the next very busiest time of year to travel.
The ships, if we’re cruising are booked to capacity. And, the most
popular vacation destinations, like Europe or the National Parks can be
crowded beyond belief.
Don’t go to Disney in the summer time unless you are partial to long
lines and wait times on your favorite tides. Also, here in Las Vegas, locals
like the summertime to get out of the heat and go back to where you
migrated from - which is most likely much cooler than 100 plus degree
Las Vegas.
The “sweet spot” time of year for travel for our trips is the Fall, mostly
October, November (but not Thanksgiving) and early December, or mid-
January, February and early March, before Easter and Passover.
During these time frames there will be few, if any children on the
trips we do, and the trip destination will be much less crowded than the
summer time or holiday season. We just think our age group will enjoy
our trips more during the quieter times of year.
Sticking to these times of year to travel is also a good travel tip for your
individual trips as well. However, we do know from experience that you
might have to travel during the busier times of year when the grandkids
are off from school and it’s the only time when the entire family can be
together.
As always happy and safe travels.
Husbands in Cars Going to Costco
(With Apologies to Jerry Seinfeld)
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
It is common wisdom that men don’t like to
shop. In fact, a British survey found that men
got bored after twenty minutes, while women could go for a full two
hours.
In contradiction to this fact,
however, my husband has developed a
timeless enthusiasm for browsing and
purchasing. He’s like an explorer who
has discovered a new world. And this
new world is called “Costco.”
I’m ready to accept the blame for the
three dozen pairs of socks spilling out of
his dresser drawer, and the 64 oz. jar of
mayonnaise in the pantry. I was the one
who originally joined, though I can’t remember why.
His co-membership card sat unused in his wallet for many years. Until
he finally admitted that we both could benefit if only he would get fitted
for hearing aids. Reading somewhere that Costco offered good quality
less-expensive hearing aids than their competitors, he withdrew the card
from his wallet and stepped into a magical kingdom.
I knew I was in trouble when he returned from his first hearing test
carrying the tallest bottle of vodka I had ever seen. “Are we entertaining
the Russian Embassy?” I asked.
He was unfazed by my sarcasm and responded triumphantly. “Do you
know what I paid for this? It was such a bargain!”
On the next trip to Costco for the hearing aid fitting, my honey
discovered the nurturing side of the cavernous warehouse. This was
revealed to him as he ate his way through the store, tasting food samples
of every variety, culminating with the best hot dog with all the trimmings
that he had ever eaten.
This and a bottomless cup of soda for only $1.59! I did manage to talk
him out of returning there for dinner.
Rushing home after his hearing aid adjustment trip, he couldn’t wait
to tell me about his latest find. Costco sold books! Tables and tables of
books. Best sellers at excellent prices.
Better call the carpenter. We will definitely need more shelves!
More trips, more discoveries. The barbecued chicken he brought
home for dinner looked like a GMO experiment gone haywire. I didn’t
know chickens grew that big. This was
followed by containers of additional food
items enough to cater a wedding.
“Like these pants?” he asked. “Costco.
Next time I go, I’ll get a few more pair.”
Like a true disciple, he felt it a
duty to spread the gospel. He directed
several friends to Costco’s hearing aid
department and in doing so, has exposed
them to the bounty therein.
It’s not unusual to overhear a
conversation between my husband and
one of his cronies, as they fondle a giant-sized bottle of scotch and discuss
how much more it would cost if they had shopped retail.
So move over to the slow lane, Seinfeld. Coffee can wait because
husbands in cars going to Costco will not be stopped!
For many residents of Southern Nevada,
getting used to summer’s excessively high
temperatures and low humidity can be quite
challenging. For plants; these factors can also affect their actual
survivals!
Interesting Fact: In southern Nevada, we have two main growing
seasons. March - June and September – November. July and August
are too hot and dry to permit most non-native vegetation from growing.
During this time, non-native plants and delicate native plants can
go into a period of dormancy. Non-natives, without major gardener
intervention, can even die off.
With the proper attention, however, many flowering plants, as well as
fruits and vegetables, will continue to grow. Your goals, therefore, are
to conserve soil moisture, reduce
soil heat and prevent excessive
plant sun damage.
One of the greatest threats
to plant survival during the
summer is the effect of rock
mulch on your landscape.
The widely used mulch that
surrounds your landscaping can
reach ground temperatures in
excess of 160 degrees! This can
cause vegetation to burn and
die.
Therefore, make certain that
rocks (both big and small) are pushed away from plants located in
areas exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time. Surround
these plants instead with wood mulch or peat moss. This will lower
ground temperatures by about 60 degrees and will keep moisture in the
soil around the roots.
Another way to prevent heat and sun damage is to water when there
is not full sunlight. Water droplets act as magnifying glasses that
intensify the sun’s ray onto the leaves, flowers, fruits and vegetables
causing plant damage. Plan to irrigate just before sunrise and after
sunset.
Since any new growth on plants will be exposed to intense and
prolonged sun exposure, refrain from applying plant food that will
stimulate rapid growth. In addition, do not add any new plants to your
landscape in July-August since they will be adversely affected by sun
and heat.
Only palm trees can be planted or receive fertilizer during the
summer months. Because we live in the Mohave Desert, we must be
proactive in protecting our plants.
Corndogs
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Overhead, clouds parade in showy splendor.
A whale spout is seen in the distance. Here
where the sounds of gulls and the quiet wash of surf can be heard, there
is an iconic roadside restaurant laying claim to genuine buzz worthy
corndogs.
Trivia buffs know that corndogs began here. The diner with a 1950s
vibe reflects an enduring easygoing time. The place is the Original
Pronto Pup hot dog stand in the small Oregon coastal town of Rockaway
Beach.
Pronto Pup is another name for corndog. And despite the fact that
many claim to be the first to develop a corn batter wrapped hot dog on a
stick, it was the owner
of an Oregon tourist
hot dog stand that
had the earliest idea
of wrapping hot dogs
in “buns” rather than
sandwiching them
inside of a white bread
bun.
The year was 1939.
Rain ruined their hot
dog bun stock when
the idea grew to cook
buns on the spot, as
needed.
George Boyington’s hand-dipped in cornbread batter and then deep
fried hot dogs became a sensation. With popularity they became known
as the “Pronto Pup.”
As corndogs became a national sensation, other hot dog stands began
developing their version. Though others claim to be the birthplace of the
corndog, none are known to pre-date George Boyington’s “Pronto Pup.”
Boyington opened franchises throughout the country, but approaching
a century later, the original Pronto Pup location remains in the coastal
town of Rockaway Beach, enduring in popularity for its savoring classic
homemade corndog on a stick.
The Oregon Coast, at the westernmost edge of the continental United
States time zone has the country’s last sunsets. Seabirds amuse themselves
at the edge of the cool waves, scooting back and forth as the waves came
in and brake and spread out along the beach.
What could be better than watching an ocean sunset while enjoying a
real corndog? Should you drive Highway 101 on the Oregon coast, take
time to stop at the original Pronto Pup; unquestionably they have the
most historically buzz worthy corndog.
Some even say this is “corndog heaven.”
Kathy draws her articles from a diverse personal background. She
hopes readers enjoy her column as much as she enjoys the writing and
Only in America
Any American who has traveled outside the
United States knows how wonderful our
country is in comparison to all other countries.
We have our problems but, compared to other
countries, we are Heaven on Earth.
We do, however, have our own funny particulars. ONLY IN
AMERICA…
1. Can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.
2. Do we award someone $3,000,000 for spilling hot coffee on their
own lap.
3. Do we have labels on baby strollers to remind people to remove the
baby before folding up the stroller.
4. Do we have prescription bottles with tops that only a child can open.
5. Do we have
drugstores that make the
sick walk all the way to
the back of the store to
get their prescriptions.
6. Do people order
double cheese burgers,
large fires, and a diet
coke.
7. Do banks leave all
the doors open and then
chain the pens to the
counters.
8. Do we leave out
cars worth thousands of
dollars in the driveway and lock up useless junk in the garage.
9. Did we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call
waiting so we won’t miss a call from someone we didn’t want to talk to
in the first place.
10. Do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of
eight.
11. Can a man wear an old tee shirt, ragged jeans, a plaid shirt he has
had since high school, a baseball cap worn backwards and dirty sneakers
to eat in a fine restaurant.
12. Do we use the word “politics” to describe the process so well: “Poli”
in Latin meaning “many” and “tics” meaning “bloodsucking creatures.”
13. Do we have drive-up ATM machines with instructions written in
Braille.
14. Can you complete an online course faster than waiting “on hold.”
15. Can a burglar sue you for hurting himself in your home while
robbing it.
The Fall Guy
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
Universal Pictures has released the PG 13
action, violence, drug content, and strong
language movie, “The Fall Guy.” This film is
partially based from the 1980 Lee Majors TV series about a stuntman
who made some extra cash on the side bounty hunting.
Ryan Gosling takes on the mantle of Colt Seavers. Emily Blunt, Gosling’s
romantic interest, are both effortlessly witty with some excellent directing
and stuntman coordinator by David Leitch and script writer Drew Pearce.
“The Fall Guy” lives up to its promise as a delightful blend of action,
comedy, and romance. It makes the audience feel like a Hollywood insider
for a couple of hours.
The film is a delight from start to finish, great comic chemistry between
the two leads, and packed with wall-to-wall action.
The movie plays homage to the ‘80s TV show of the same name. “The
Fall Guy” is one tiny step on the path to making audiences more aware
of some of the behind-the-scenes people who really make movies better -
and risk it all to do so.
I enjoyed this film, the acting was great, it kept you on the edge of your
seat and I have decided to give “The Fall Guy” a 4 out of 5 movie rating.
Hopefully 2024 will surprise us with more good movies.
