WHEN CHRISTINE Cassin began
officiating swim meets nearly 20
years ago, she could never have
imagined where it would lead to.
From representative meetings
to the international stage at world
championships and events, next
month will see her officiate at
the pinnacle of global sport – the
Olympic Games.
Cassin, from Lincoln, is the
only New Zealander who will be a
poolside official at the Paris games,
testimony to the high regard and
reputation she has forged during her
time in the sport.
Northland’s Ross Gillespie will be
a referee at the open water events at
the games, while his wife Carlrine
will be poolside at the Paralympics,
which follow the Olympics.
Cassin is one of only two
Canterbury officials in Paris
alongside Gareth Greenfield, who
will umpire hockey in what is his
first Olympic Games.
“This is the ultimate goal, and to
have actually achieved it at this age
is very special,” 65-year-old Cassin
said.
“I was almost speechless, it’s a real
privilege to have been chosen.”

Proposed
design for
major road
frustrates
residents

THE PROPOSED design for one
of Rolleston’s main roads has
residents concerned about future
access to their properties.
Residents from Levi Rd and
surrounding streets met with the
council to raise their concerns.
The council is planning to
widen Levi Rd, add a flush median
strip, and install traffic lights
to replace the roundabout at Levi
Rd, Lincoln Rolleston Rd, Lowes
Rd, and Masefield Drive.
The proposed design of the traffic
lights will also see a concrete
median barrier installed on Levi
Rd, blocking right-turn access to
three properties near the roundabout.
One of those properties is
owned by Alan and Joy Haylock.
Alan Haylock said the proposed
traffic island was because of an
exit from Pak’nSave.
Groundwork on the new supermarket
at 157 Levi Rd started
earlier this month.
“Ours is the only one (road)
with a traffic island . . . and is because
of an exit from Pak’nSave.
“The whole thing is poorly
planned,” Haylock said.

‘I’ve had countless sleepless nights’

CAM KENYON has called time
on his volunteer firefighting
career, which stretches back 36
years.
The Rolleston volunteer fire
chief has had three stints with
the brigade, the most recent
starting in 2013. He has been
chief for about five years.
“I always wanted to be a fireman.
When I turned 16, I went
down and saw the chief at the
time and spoke to him on one of
the training nights. He said ‘come
back in a couple of weeks’, and so I
went back and joined up.”
But Kenyon, 52, will remain
a professional firefighter at
Christchurch Airport, where he
has been since 2004.
He said going to call-outs at a
young age matured him.
He recalled one where his
mum stayed up for him until
he got home because she felt he
could be affected by what he had
seen.
“I went to a house fire in
Springston and the guy ended
up dying and I went home and
mum was up.
“Talking to her now, it was her
instinct that she thought I might
just stay up for this one.”

“There’s been countless
sleepless nights and it’s time to
de-stress and let the young ones
take over.”

have five children between them.
“I have got three, a daughter
and two sons, who are all grown
up and working, and then
Raewyn’s got two boys.
“I’ve also got a grand-daughter
and she’s the boss.”

The traffic lights are being installed to
address congestion issues and improve
pedestrian access.
The latest traffic count from the council
in 2022 showed about 10,000 vehicles used
the road a day.
Traffic in the area is only expected to
increase. The new Pak’nSave is due to be
completed by late 2025. A Mitre 10 on
Lincoln Rolleston Rd next to Pak’nSave
is planned, with the consenting process
under way.

commuter and freight access points for
Rolleston, with traffic coming from the

added outside her property.
She battles every morning to get out of
her driveway due to congestion and has
traffic build up behind her when waiting
to turn right into her driveway.
“We constantly get honked at, abused
or dangerous manoeuvres into oncoming
traffic,” Roche said.
Roche said her car had been hit while
parked on the roadside and a painter had
his van side-swiped while working at her
house.
Mason said the road widening will
start this financial year, but could not
confirm where the median strips will
placed.
“The design is not finalised, however,
the plan has been to include flush medians
where appropriate as part of the upgrade
of the road to bring it up to the standards
of an arterial road.
“Council will work with developers
who are also required to provide their
own upgrades along Levi Rd as their
subdivisions eventuate.”

Every four years the
international technical officials’
referee list is renewed. Cassin is
currently in her third and final
four-year term, which lasts until
the end of 2026.
“Once you turn 65 you can’t
apply to go on a list. I was 64
when I applied.”
Poolside, Cassin is one of 32
officials who will be involved in
a number of tasks from checking
a swimmer’s start and finish,
ensuring they are doing the
strokes and kicks correctly, to
monitoring the call room before
athletes come out to the pool.
Cassin never swam
competitively, but developed a
passion for the sport through her
children Holly and Ashley who
were competitive swimmers.
In 2010, she became a regional
referee and a national referee
two years later. In 2015, she
successfully applied for one of
New Zealand’s six positions on
the World Aquatics international
technical officials list.
She officiated at the 2015
(Singapore) and 2017 (United
States) world junior champs
and the 2019 and 2023 World
Aquatics championships
in South Korea and Japan
respectively.
Cassin will be in Paris for
12 days, nine of those spent at
the swimming events at the
Paris La Défense Arena, a multipurpose
indoor arena developed
by rugby club Racing 92 which
opened in 2017.
The Olympics will be the first
time swimming and water polo
events will be held at the venue.
The arena has the world’s
largest interactive giant screen,
with innovative technology
and 1400m² of display area
(equivalent to seven tennis
courts).
A Wharenui club member,
most of her weekends are spent
officiating.
“We have competitions pretty
much every other weekend,
so it’s quite full-on. I’m on the
Swimming Canterbury West
Coast technical committee and
I’m the technical representative
on our events committee, so I’m
reasonably involved in planning
of our calendar and going to
those meets.
“It can be quite a commitment
time-wise, but I do love the
involvement. Swimming is
everything, it’s my passion.”

return from maternity leave next
week.
Grigg has been on leave since
late last year when she welcomed
her first child, Geordie, on
December 27 at the Rolleston
Birthing Unit.

TEEN CHARGED OVER
ROLLESTON RAMRAID
A 14-year-old has been charged
after a ramraid at TechPro
Rolleston earlier this month. He
was due to appear in Christchurch
Youth Court yesterday to face a
charge of burglary and unlawfully
taking a motor vehicle. The raid
was the second time the store was
broken into in recent months.
POLICE STILL SEEKING
OWNER OF RAZED HUT
Police have been unable to contact
the owner of the derelict building
at Greenpark Huts where cannabis
was found after a fire. The fire
destroyed any plants and growing
equipment. A police spokesperson
said due to the damage at the
property, police were unable to gain
forensic evidence.
JOINT INSTITUTE STARTS
Lincoln University’s joint institute
with a Chinese university will
welcome its first intake of students
in August. Students will study
at the Huazhong Agricultural
University in Wuhan. The institute
will offer four qualifications jointly
awarded by both universities
– Master of Environmental
Management, Bachelor of
Science Conservation and
Ecology, Bachelor of Viticulture
and Oenology and Bachelor of
Commerce (horticulture). The
institute is expected to have a
capacity of 1000 students from
China and New Zealand.

Bella top of the pups in district
IF YOU HAVE a dog called
Bella, you are not alone.
The name has taken the top
spot for the most registered dog
name in the district during the
last year.
It is the second year in a row
Bella has been the district’s top
dog name.
Selwyn has one of the highest
rates of dog ownership in
the country, with one in five
households owning a dog.
In the district, there are 205
dogs named Bella, followed by
191 called Poppy, 187 who go
by Ruby, 180 Charlies and Max
rounds out the top five with 166.
Labradors were the most
popular breed, with 2231
registered, followed by 1378
border collies, 924 huntaways,
924 greyhounds and 758 jack
russell terriers.
Meanwhile, it will cost more to
register a dog in the district this
financial year.
Registration fees have
increased, going from $60 to $75.
Council head of regulatory
Susan Atherton says owners who
register their dogs before July 31
will be eligible for a discounted
fee of $60.
To register a second dog, the
fee will increase from $45 to $55.
Registration renewal forms
were sent to owners in June.

Advocacy group finds new focus
After taking on one of
Canterbury’s biggest
developers, Lincoln
Voice is gearing up to
advocate for the district’s
second-biggest town.

OVER THE NEXT decade,
Lincoln’s population is expected
to grow from about 10,400 to
14,000 – a rise Lincoln Voice says
the town is not ready for.
“A lot of people are coming to
Lincoln and this will put pressure
on roads, schools, and other
infrastructure,” Carrick said.
“The Lincoln town centre
upgrades for Gerald St is eight
years overdue and still has not
been given priority in the Long
Term Plan.”

Carter Group subdivision Lincoln
South will start in September and
will account for a majority of the
growth.
Lincoln Voice spent about two
years fighting the development
until bowing out in April.
In 2022 Carrick and other
residents concerned about
Lincoln South went to the
now-disestablished Lincoln
Community Committee. The
committee told the residents it
could not help because it was a
council-controlled organisation.
“A group of us went to see them
to do something about PC69
(Lincoln South), but they felt they
couldn’t,” Carrick said.
After failing to get the
committee’s support, Lincoln
Voice was formed as an
incorporated society by the
residents to fight the Carter Group
application.
Lincoln Voice appealed to the
Environment Court in August
2022, raising about $15,000 to
help with legal costs but their
appeal was never heard.
At the same time, Carter Group
was applying for a private plan
change – it had also applied to
have the land rezoned as part of
the District Plan review, a process
in which Lincoln Voice was never
involved.
The District Plan was
adopted in August last year in
a controversial vote where only
six district councillors were
present in a closed-door meeting
to vote on the hearing panel’s
recommendations for the future.
By approving the plan, it made
the Lincoln Voice appeal nulland-void.
Almost a year later it
remains a sore point for Carrick.
“We still think the whole thing
was completely wrong.”
After the vote, Lincoln Voice
looked at any avenue they could
to keep fighting the development,

judicial review of the council’s
decision. But, after taking legal
advice, the group withdrew the
appeal, ending the battle.
Any remaining funds raised
for the fight were given to the
Environmental Defence Society,
which had helped advise the
group with its appeal.
Following the defeat, some
members left the group.
“Some people left because they
were only interested in Lincoln
South,” Carrick said.
While the group still has a
mailing list of about 280, just
three members are left on the
committee – Carrick, chair Aaron
McGlinchey, and committee
member Tracey MacLeod. But the
group wants to add to that as it
starts to move on to other issues

“All our efforts were going into
the appeal but we were always
going to look at environment and
social issues and speak up for
anything that affected Lincoln,”
Carrick said.
“Anything anyone is passionate
about, they can come to us.”
Carrick became the
spokesperson due to others
not wanting to be known in
the community while fighting
Lincoln South.
“It can be hard. I do have people
come up to me in the supermarket
now, and that’s fine, but it’s not
something I wanted.”
All three remaining group
members are Lincoln residents,
with Carrick working in learning
support at Rolleston College, and
MacLeod owning a consultancy
business.
The group’s post-Lincoln South
focus has turned to road safety.
The campaign focuses on
intersection safety and upgrades
to the roads around the Lincoln
town centre.
This month, Carrick and
MacLeod presented a petition
with 769 signatures to the council
calling for lit-up flashing stop
signs to be installed at dangerous
intersections, a reduction
of speed in the approach to
intersections, and better visibility
by the removing trees around
intersections.
Carrick is hoping the council
takes notice and makes changes.
“Hopefully this will help add
pressure to make our roads
around Lincoln and Selwyn safer,
sooner.
“Action needs to be taken before
any more people are unnecessarily
killed or injured, and to make it
safer for children to get to school.”
MacLeod told the council
Lincoln now has rush-hour traffic.
“As somebody who was an
Aucklander, I understand peak
hour, and Lincoln now has peak
hour.”
The Lincoln Residents
Association is another group
formed after the council shut
down the community committee.
Carrick said they hope the two
groups can work together.
‘We would hope to work with
them definitely.”
Interim association chair
Kathryn Claridge said the group
would be happy to work with
Lincoln Voice.
“We’ll consult with any
organisation in the committee no
problem,” Claridge said.
Lincoln Voice is planning to
hold an annual meeting in August
but has yet to set a date.

BIG WINNERS: Rolleston College
with their awards.
Rolleston College and Lincoln High School were among the big winners
at Showquest regionals. The competition was held over two days at the
Christchurch Town Hall last week. High schools and primary schools from
around Canterbury were challenged to create an original stage-based mini
Broadway production that follows the elements of art, music, dance, drama,
culture and technology. It is completely student-run, and performances are
centred around an issue most important to them. Rolleston College won
the award for best drama and was highly commended for choreography.
Rolleston was second overall, behind Burnside High School. Rolleston’s
piece was titled ‘Outside the Box’ and focused on the issues women face
to fit societal expectations. Lincoln finished third overall and won the award
for best choreography, was highly commended for styling and highly
commended for soundtrack.

Support for river management a positive step

support from central Government
for flood and river management
measures in Waitaha/Canterbury
is welcome news.
Co-funding, drawn from a new
Regional Infrastructure Fund,
will help speed progress on a
range of projects identified in the
Before the Deluge 2.0 report.
This report is a business case
put together by unitary and
regional councils, advocating
for co-investment in river
resilience and flood management
infrastructure.
The projects in Waitaha that
will benefit are:
• Rangitata Flood and
Resilience Works – Stage 2
• Regional Structure Upgrade
and Adaptation Programme
• Waitarakao, Washdyke and
Seadown Flood Works.
We and other councils have
been asking for Wellington’s
support on this for a long time
now, so it’s pleasing to see the
Government acknowledging that
help is needed.
As we’ve always said, it
shouldn’t be up to ratepayers to
foot the entire bill for protecting
communities from the risks of
natural hazards. If a key piece of
infrastructure is taken out by a
flooding river, the effects can be
felt far beyond the community
itself. It’s in the entire country’s
best interests to protect roads,
bridges, railway lines and other
important lifelines, and therefore
the Government has a key role to
play.
As I see it, this co-funding
– together with a new targeted
rate being introduced in Selwyn
– signals a new way of working
towards river resilience.
The targeted rate, to be
introduced through our Long-
Term Plan 2024-34, spreads the
cost of flood and river resilience
works across all ratepayers in the
district.
This is in addition to the six
dedicated river and drainage
rating districts that already exist.
So those who benefit from
works that directly affect their
property are still paying their
share, while the costs of districtwide
work will be spread more
evenly.
In Year 1, the targeted rate
will add $7.08 to rates bills for
Selwyn households, which will go
towards:

• Investigation and development
of a forward work programme
• Initial work clearing out
channels and flow paths
• Weed control and planting.
The targeted rate is a trial, so
depending on its success, it could
potentially be replicated in other
districts in the future.
River resilience isn’t only about
flood management.
We’re moving towards a ‘whole
of catchment’ approach – a more
holistic way of looking at rivers
and the land around them.
Our awa are unique and
one size does not fit all. We
want to manage rivers from the
mountains to the sea, ki uta ki
tai – acknowledging the impact
of the wider environment on the
health of our awa, and the way
they behave.
There’s still a lot more to do
to protect our farms, homes,
businesses and infrastructure
from the type of deluges we saw in
Waitaha in 2021.
By looking at the bigger picture
and the range of values we need to
manage – we can drive efficiencies
and develop solutions that are
long lasting, more equitable and
sustainable.
For example, fairway clearance
deals with both biosecurity issues
relating to weed species, as well
as creating biodiversity outcomes
for braided river birds – while
allowing our rivers to flow,
lessening flood risks.
Likewise, providing strategic
locations where rivers are given
more room, similar to what
we are doing on the Hakatere/
Ashburton River, can allow for
planned gravel accumulation and
removal.
These are all things we are
working towards, and for which
both the co-investment from
Government, and our districtwide
rating trial are helping to
achieve.
Project aims to boost
participation in sport
DISTRICT HIGH schools have
partnered with the Selwyn
Sports Trust to develop a project
that creates more sporting
opportunities for students.
Ellesmere College, Darfield
High School, Lincoln High
School and Rolleston College
have come together to support
the vision.
It will enable students to play
sport, be more active, learn crucial
coaching skills, and develop
friendship and connections
through competition.
Rolleston College principal
Rachel Skelton supports the
partnership.
“Our region continues to see
significant growth, particularly
with young families whose children
are now feeding into our
growing secondary schools.
“The timing of this partnership
is perfect so we can ensure
we have alignment going into
the future.”
Ellesmere College principal
Ronan Bass said the opportunity
to work with the trust was a
very beneficial and satisfactory
learning experience.

The project aims to get students
more involved in playing
sport.
Six initiatives have been developed
to encourage this.
They include an annual
combined schools athletics day,
a specialised coaching programme
and an annual ki-orahi
festival.
Isaac Construction and
Lincoln University are also
involved, assisting the trust in
developing more initiatives.
Kate Lloyd has been working
with the trust for the last two
years, and has been promoted
to a leadership position to help
deliver the new body of work
which will be focusing on
Selwyn students.

Microchipping: Proactive care for your pets
Lost pets in Selwyn are common,
and looking for your lost fur baby can
be stressful. One of the easiest ways
for pets to be found and reunited with
their owners is to be microchipped and
registered on the database.
These days, microchipping is not only
normal but mandatory for NZ dogs. In
New Zealand, microchipping is required
by law for dogs that are first registered
after July 1, 2006, with the exception
of working farm dogs. Puppies must
be registered by three months old and
microchipped within the following
two months. It is not required for dogs
who were first registered before then,
except those classified as dangerous,
menacing, or impounded. The Selwyn
District Council offers free monthly
microchipping clinics for dogs.

and costs owners between $15 and $20,
plus vet fees. Online registration with
NZCAR costs a one-off fee of $15.
Microchipping Facts:
• A microchip is a computer chip about
the size of a single grain of rice.
• Microchips have a unique number

• A microchip scanner can check the
microchip number.
• A microchip is permanent, so you
only ever need to get it placed once.
• The microchip is placed in the scruff
of the neck, just under the skin.
• It only takes seconds to insert.
• It is rare for a microchip to move
around.
• The microchip does not include a
GPS (Global Positioning System) or
personal information about the owner.
• Side effects are rare, and there will
usually be only some inflammation
around the injection site.
• Owners should also keep their pet’s
microchip details updated if they
move or transfer ownership of the
animal.
• Some studies show cats with
microchips are 20 times as likely to
be returned home than they would
otherwise.

Consecutive colts titles for dominant Bales

THE LINCOLN Bales have won
their second combined country
colts title in a row with a 26-20
victory over Prebbleton.
The Bales were leading 26-3 at
one stage before a late fightback
from Prebbleton saw the
scoreline tighten up.
Head coach Tim Knowles said
his side played an outstanding
game.
“We held on to the ball for
long periods of time and denied
them possession, which resulted
in us putting enough pressure
on to get the points up.
“(We) took
our foot off the
throat towards
the end and they
got back pretty
close.”
Knowles says
he hopes the
success of the
Bales – who
also reached the
Tim
Knowles
final of the Ellesmere competition
last year, and lead the way
with two rounds to go this
year – translates into division 1
accolades in future.
“There have been quite a few
colts players who have already
stepped up this year (to division
1). Probably at least five of the
boys, maybe six,” Knowles said.
“(I’m) just hoping that trend
continues over the next few
years, that when they age up
over 21, they stick around and
want to play div 1 while they’re
here.
“I certainly see good signs for
the div 1 side in the next sort
of three or four years, as some
of these younger guys get a bit
more experience.”
The Bales will continue their
Ellesmere season on Friday
against Darfield at Darfield
Domain.

More heartbreak for Prebbleton

PREBBLETON’S focus now
switches to the Coleman Shield
after coming up short in the
final of the combined country
competition for the second year
in a row.
The Penguins went down 41-27
to Glenmark-Cheviot on Saturday,
denying them the chance
to win their first combined title
after losing to Ashburton Celtic
last year.
Head coach Simon Fitzgerald
said the loss hurt.
“It certainly hurts. It’s something
the group had set out as
their aim at the start of the year,
to win this competition that we
came so close in last year.”
Prebbleton’s attention now
turns to the Coleman Shield –
where they are defending champions
after last year winning
their first title in 49 years.
They head the table, one point
clear of Waihora.
Fitzgerald said their motivation
was the same it had always
been – they want to defend their
title, after losing the final in both
2021 and 2022.
“(We’ve got) a group there that
are really hungry for success
after having knocked on the door
for several years,” he said.
“And it’s just about capitalising
on the opportunities now and
making sure we convert more
into some trophies like we did
last year.”
They take on Springston
on Saturday, thefirst of three
matches before the finals.
Fitzgerald said Springston
would pose a stern test.
“They’re a gritty team and they
bring lots of hunger, lots of fight,
and they’re quite abrasive in the
contact area.
“We’ll have to make sure we’re
up for the fight from minute one
against them.”
Waihora take on West Melton
in the first match of the round on
Thursday night at Rhodes Park,
before Darfield and Lincoln
do battle on Friday at Darfield
Domain.
The other match on Saturday
sees Southbridge play away to
Hornby.

registered from June
If you call for Bella at Kakaha dog park, you’re
likely to grab someone else’s dog’s attention,
as this was the leading name for dogs
registered in the year 2023/24.
If Bella is a labrador, she also takes the title of
Selwyn’s most ‘pup-ular’ dog breed, with 2,231
labradors registered for the year 2023/24.
Selwyn has one of the highest rates of dog
ownerships in the country with one in five
households owning a dog. Bella the labrador is
likely to be one of more than 17,000 dogs in
Selwyn set to become official for 2024/25 year.
Visitors honour the memory of Rewi Alley
The great granddaughter of Selwyn resident
Rewi Alley helped mark the ongoing relationship
between Springfield and China in a special
ceremony with the Chinese Minister of International
Relations of the Central Congress last month.
Alley, born in Springfield, spent 60 years working
in China, where he adopted two boys. Luyi Duan,
the great granddaughter of one of the boys visited
Springfield on 25 May with Minister Liu Jianchao
for a special ceremony including guests from the
Selwyn Sister City Committee, Malvern Community
Changes to sport and recreation fees
New fees and charges will be in place from 1 July
2024 for some fitness and swimming classes
and Council services to support the increases
in operation costs.
The majority of fees for the Selwyn Aquatic Centre,
Selwyn Sports Centre and group fitness classes will
increase by approximately 5-6%. The change for
most services will be less than 50 cents per visit.
General pool entry to the Selwyn Aquatic Centre will
increase by 30 cents for an adult and by 20 cents for
a child or preschooler. Casual entry for Group Fitness
classes will increase by 60 cents for adults and 40
cents for Gold, Community Services and Hapai card

The Kowai intake in Malvern scheme will be shut
down for planned maintenance works which will

seem to come up against a
brick wall that seems to be
impenetrable. No matter how
hard you push you can’t seem to
break through.
This is how some players must
feel when they can’t cement a
permanent playing spot in their
franchise.
With Super Rugby wrapped
up for 2024, the selection
meetings and planning for 2025
squads are now under way.
There will be plenty of players
locked-in already for most
franchises, but the fine balance
of keeping promising players
within the group is always a
challenge.
As a player, how long do you
keep trying to break down that
wall. If you are ranked fourth or
fifth on the depth chart, how do
you become part of the matchday

work in preparation for the

“The older girls, they’re
(training) five days a week,
minimum 15 hours training on
top of their schoolwork. They’re
sacrificing a lot of personal time.
“(The others) train twice a
week, usually for around four
hours, and then we give them
land activities to do at home,
like practicing their routine
outside of the water, stretching,
splits, that sort of thing.”

Brett Cameron is another who
seemed to get no traction or
consistent game time. Cameron’s
sideways decision was to head
to Japan where he got some
confidence and form back – then
to NPC at Manawatu, where he
was picked up by the Hurricanes
and finished out 2024 as their
starting No 10. Rameka Pohipi is
another Canterbury player who
is now a constant pick in the
Chiefs.
The latest is young up-andcomer
Zach Gallagher who
has come through from being
a junior at Burnside to making
his debut for the Crusaders in
2022. He will now try to ignite
his career with the Hurricanes
from 2025.
The downside to creating and
developing quality depth is you
can’t keep them all, and there is
only so much money – and game
time to keep everyone satisfied.
One person who changed his
direction successfully is Ethan
Roots. Originally picked up
by the Crusaders from North
Harbour, he ended up having
just one appearance in 2020 and
could see no way forward in a
stacked forward pack.
Roots took the biggest
sideways path of all and headed
first to Ospreys and then to
Exeter in England. He had a
storming couple of seasons
and got noticed by the national
coaching and selection group.
Now he is headed back to
NZ, not to play Super Rugby
but as part of England’s touring
team and is set to play against
the ABs, who are now under
his former Super Rugby coach.
He’s gone from doing the haka
as a Māori All Black in 2020 to
facing the haka in 2024.
There are many more from the
Crusaders region not mentioned,
and there will be many more in
the future, but those players are
a good example that sometimes
heading elsewhere to get another
opinion can prove beneficial and
open other doors.

Garden-Bachop’s passing. I
knew Connor through his time
playing at Lincoln University.
He had a personality that
brightened any room he entered
and an infectious smile that
made it a joy to have him

Sleek lines of beauty
With beautiful, standout lines, this 1967
VC Valiant Chrysler is a source of joy for
local Rolleston owner Nick, who bought
the car eight months ago. Nick had been
deciding between the Chrysler, a 1967
Fairlane 500 V8, and a hot-rodded EJ
Holden Wagon. The decision was made
for him when the other cars sold. All
different styles, Nick admits, “If it’s got
beautiful lines and is a good investment,
I’m interested.”
Nick says, “I’ve always had a soft spot for
the lines on this car.” He particularly likes
the sharp, straight, and aggressive molding
lines on the car’s side, leading to the
chrome strip towards the rear teardropshaped
tail lights. Mounted higher than
the boot lid, these tail lights give the
vehicle a fin-like feel.
Nick is the car’s fifth owner, and it has
driven under 100,000 miles. The interior
is original, including the seats, carpet, and
hood lining—and “you gotta love bench
seats!” The exterior has been re-sprayed
but still features the original white-on-blue
combination. It sports after-market mag
wheels.

The Chrysler has the original factory
engine, a 225 Slant 6. It is nicknamed “the
leaning tower of power” because of its
canted block with the cylinders laid over
30 degrees to the right. The cruiser vibe
persists with the old-school gearshift on
the steering column and a three-on-thetree
manual transmission.
At a recent show, where he was showing
the car, a couple approached Nick, and
the woman started crying as they stood
by the vehicle. It turned out that her
family had first owned the Chrysler. The
husband pointed out a telltale pin dent in
the door frame, which had occurred when

he dropped a spanner from his pocket,
earning considerable displeasure from his
father-in-law, who owned the new vehicle.
The couple reminisced, and Nick happily
photographed them in the car.
Nick’s interest in cars goes back many
years, competitively racing Speedway for
21 years. However, after a race win and
being in an accident earlier in the year,
he decided his interest in racing was over.
With an 11-month-old baby, Nick wanted
an activity that could include everyone.
It means enjoying the car as intended
- cruising on Sundays, attending car
shows, doing charity runs to support the
community, and bringing smiles to kids.
He follows in his family’s footsteps, who
also enjoy car shows and cruises. Keep an

What do you do if your vehicle
breaks down while driving?
Winter driving can cause havoc with
your car. It can be stressful if your vehicle
breaks down and you get stuck on the
side of the road. Here are some tips to
help you stay safe and get assistance.
If you hear an unusual noise while
driving or notice your car is not working
properly, indicate and steer your vehicle
to a safe place off the road. Be aware
of ditches and sizeable areas of deep
mud, snow, or ice. Try to leave space for
assistance vehicles to stop near you. Turn
on your hazard lights and also the inside
light if it’s dark outside. Use a safety
triangle if you have one. If you can, exit
through the passenger side and open
your bonnet to signal other drivers for
assistance. Avoid standing on the road
and remain in the car if you need to wait
for assistance. If you have a cell phone,
call for assistance, or if it is safe, walk to
find help.
However, if you are driving on
a motorway, there are other safety
considerations. Because of the speed of
traffic on a motorway, don’t stop your car
suddenly if you experience an issue. Slow
down and steer your vehicle as far left
as possible. Ensure it is safe to get out of
your car from the passenger side, open the
bonnet and boot, and show you need help
by lifting the bonnet and boot. Turn on
your hazard lights and also inside lights at
night, stay in your car, and wait for help.
Call for a breakdown service, friends or
family, *555, a garage, or towing service
for assistance.
Every car should carry a warning
triangle, a high-vis vest, a torch with
spare batteries, a first aid kit, and a warm
blanket.
Be prepared for unexpected breakdowns
when driving, and know how to keep
yourself and others safe.

This position will be for Terms 3/4 (22 July - 15 November 2024) on a part

opportunity to build in Selwyn. However,
the building process can be stressful and
daunting if it’s their first time. Matt from
Selwyn’s Dark Horse Building provides
advice to help people on their building
journey.
What advice would you give
about building in Selwyn for the
first time?
Research a couple of different building
companies first. Use builders who have
already built in Selwyn and check out some
of their completed builds to look at the
quality and cost. Know your budget and
consider what’s important for you to have
in your house.
How should you decide on a
builder/company?
• Do your due diligence on your
prospective choice.
• Check they have previous construction
experience and inspect their past
projects.
• Do a company search to ensure they
have a stable financial background
and that their Licenced Building
Practitioner (LBP) registration is
current.
• Some companies subcontract the
labour and parts of a build; find out
who will actually be building your
house
• Ask who they use as subcontractors for
other trades (plumbing, electrical).
• Ask how many people are in their
business. Smaller companies may tailor
a more flexible service but have longer
lead times for starting. Larger firms
may have better delivery timeframes
but be less flexible.
• Find out how much money and time
is required upfront to determine a full
fixed-price contract/quote on which
you can base your decisions.
Those companies that can provide more
detail upfront, answer your questions well,
mitigate any risks that may pop up, and
give a good level of detail in their pricing
should stand out.
Different companies will be more suitable
depending on what you want and how
much input you want in the design of your
house.
