Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny 

on what we ate, who served us, who we bumped into and, you 

know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Port Marina, the much-discussed replacement for the 

much-loved Harbor View restaurant, located just before the Ocean 

Drive bridge which leads to the Wildwoods. 

The vibe: First of all, the renovation is beautiful. The decision to 

enclose the dock with glass panels was inspired (and, no doubt, quite 

expensive). Everywhere you look, there are classy touches of nautical-inspired 

design, minus the kitsch. The bouncy, boppy music that 

greeted us wasn’t the usual Cape May waterfront soundtrack — it felt 

more Laguna Beach than Lower Township. We were seated parallel 

with the bar, with a delightful view of the water. 

The owners: It’s the same folks who took over Taco Caballito Tequileria 

two years ago, with a good deal of success. They also recently 

signed a lease to open up a new eatery, The Fish House, at Sunset Beach, 

replacing the old school, iconic grill that sat there for decades. Construction 

work is still ongoing there, but its location alone will make it a 

desirable destination. We’re looking forward to stopping in. 

The food: It was a hot day (though after a miserable, MISERABLE 

spring, we’re not complaining), so sushi was a tempting choice — we 

opted for the Dragon roll, which is eel wrapped with avocado. We followed 

that with honey-whipped feta and a warm, buttery lobster roll. 

For the toddler, we got the obligatory chicken strips. At Port, the kids’ 

offerings also come with ice cream, with the empasis on cream (they 

buy from the excellent Jersey Cow, out of Northfield). 

The drinks: The cocktail game is strong. On this day, we chose a 

Negroni and a Blueberry Basil Lemonade, but were tempted by a good 

many more. There’s a Mojito Bar if you like to spend your evening torturing 

bartenders (it’s usually their least favorite drink to make). 

Parking: It won’t be easy. You need to keep your wits about you. 

When we visited (and it was before the evening rush), drivers were 

carving out their own spaces, which doesn’t usually end well. If you spot 

a space at the beginning of the lot, take it! Who cares if you have to walk 

a little extra to get to the promised land.

The Boiler Room has a chic industrial vibe with 

exposed brickwork, stainless steel table tops and a 

dance floor that’s often bopping. Feast upon brickoven 

pizza with draft beers. 

Congress Hall’s lounge got a very groovy, very sexy 

renovation. The bar was enlarged (and moved) and 

there are all sorts of seating nooks from which to 

enjoy great drinks and a great vibe. 

Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw 

bar, surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus 

outside tables for some great people-watching! 

Enjoy a fun and creative twist on an age-old favorite. 

From wild combinations, to classic ingredients, there’s 

plenty you’ll want to try when you visit. 

Serving great classic comfort food in a beautiful 

location with a historic vibe. Chef Sherry Sheldon 

created a menu that offers pub-style fare while 

embracing the farm-to-table concept. 

The Kulkowitz family’s latest culinary adventure. 

They’re bringing a new vibe to the Cape May dining 

scene with menu featuring local food with global 

flavors. 

As you’d expect of an Irish pub, this is the place to get 

Guinness and good pub grub. The burgers and meat 

pies have been receiving rave reviews.

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Early July. About the nadir of bird study. 

Spring migration over. Three weeks 

until the first southbound birds reach 

town. What’s a birder to do? Happily, 

Cape May offers a bounty of local 

breeding birds, plus a summer spectacle worth 

showcasing. And there is always the chance of 

some unusual waif turning up at any time. 

Belleplain State Forest offers an array of 

“southern specialties,” birds whose mostly 

southern breeding ranges just edge into New 

Jersey. Birds like Prothonotary Warbler, Yellowthroated 

Warbler and (gasp, sigh) Summer 

Tanager, a bird the color of kiln-fired brick, still 

glowing with heat. 

Our coastal marshes are festooned with 

herons and egrets, ibis and and night herons. 

But to see these conservation-era icons in all 

their finery, take a trip to the Ocean City visitor 

center and feast your eyes. Hundreds of 

egrets, their plumes billowing, scores of Yellowcrowned 

and Black-crowned Night Herons, eye 

level. And such eyes! Amber and ruby red, so 

close you can see your reflection in their eyes. 

But for my money, the prize denizens are the 

hundreds of White Ibis. Rare in New Jersey a 

decade ago, they’re now an everyday occurrence. 

Both John James Audubon and Alexander 

Wilson studied and painted in our marshes and 

never saw White Ibis here. 

If raptors are your ambition, head on over 

to the Maurice River and feast your eyes on 

New Jersey’s greatest concentration of breeding 

Osprey. At the riverside park in Mauricetown, 

six nests are in view, including the one poised 

above the lot. While you are parked, watch out 

for otter, who are regulars here. Bald Eagles, too. 

A favorite perch is the scrubby riverside cedar a 

half mile down river. Bring binoculars. 

As for waifs, this springs sighting of a 

European Common Swift is a reminder that 

birds have wings and oceans are no barrier. 

And while July is off-season for migrants, many 

non-breeding second year birds don’t keep regular 

schedules or adhere to standard routes. 

And while no property owners want to 

court an Atlantic hurricane, birders live for 

these bird-catching storms which ferry rarely 

seen tropical birds north in the hurricane’s eye. 

Where the eye passes, bounty follows. 

By the end of July, the first southbound 

shorebirds arrive, the vanguards for another 

exciting fall at “the migration mainline.” To learn 

more about this exciting bird group, pick up a 

copy of the newly released The Shorebirds Of North 

America. It’s a visual treat, written by local photographer 

Kevin Karlson and some other guy. 

The American Avocet on the cover will about 

shatter the vision centers of your mind.

The Theater Column 

East Lynne Theater’s new show reviewed by Kylie DiNardi 

It’s already been said that East Lynne 

Theater is no longer your grandmother’s 

theater. Tea for Three: Lady Bird, Pat & Betty 

brilliantly leads the new direction in 

which East Lynne is heading with more 

updated and crowd-pleasing productions. 

Not only has artistic director Craig Fols 

flexed his creative powers by starting the 44th 

season off with a poignant and contemporary 

piece, but he was able to have its playwright, 

Elaine Bromka, star in this one-woman show. 

Bromka is known for many roles on stage and 

screen, including movies like Uncle Buck with 

John Candy and in shows like Days of Our Lives, 

Sex and the City and Law & Order. 

Tea for Three opened on June 19 to a soldout 

audience with Bromka captivating the 

full house as she portrayed three of the most 

notable First Ladies in recent memory. Her 

years of Broadway and Off-Broadway was 

evident as she became instantly recognized 

and believable portraying three distinct personalities. 

The laughs are many and Bromka 

has a clear awareness of how important those 

laughs can be in bringing these global figures 

to a human, relatable level. The poignant 

moments of tenderness and doubt, the confessions 

and frustrations all convey the honor, 

weight and fragility of what Pat Nixon called 

the hardest unpaid job in the world. 

Byam Stevens’ sharp choices in direction 

keep the pace tight and the stage set simple 

so as not to compete with the show’s star. 

And it’s no wonder both the performance and 

direction is so powerful and seamless — Byam 

Stevens has directed Bromka in numerous 

productions of Tea for Three. 

Bromka also knows the art of telling a 

good story. Each of the First Ladies she portrays 

has their fair share of colorful anecdotes 

and gossipy moments which made the audience 

forget their place in the theater and made 

each person feel as if they are the sole guest, 

privileged to have tea with these ladies. 

An added tip of the hat goes to artistic 

director Fols, who chose this show during 

an election year. Bromka’s play, which she 

co-wrote with Eric H. Weinberger, and most 

notably her performance, is a reminder to us 

of a time when peaceful transitions of power 

and an acceptance of opposing convictions 

were commonplace. 

Tea for Three runs Wednesday through 

Saturdays until July 6, at 7pm. An added performance 

will be held Tuesday, July 2. No show

Little luxuries make summer sweeter, 

and combining two of your favorites 

is delightfully indulgent. Luckily, Cape 

May is rich in both coffee shops (Bagel 

Tyme, Beach Plum Cafe, Tommy’s 

Folly, Golden Stop) and candy shops (Laura’s 

Fudge, Fralinger’s, The Original Fudge 

Kitchen.) Brew your own blend from Cape 

May Roasters, stir in a little raw honey from 

Cape May Honey Farm, and enjoy with with 

a square of chocolate from Louisa’s Chocolate 

Bar. Pick up an iced coffee from Out There and

Why do coffee and chocolate go so well 

together? The experts at Lindt credit the complex 

favor profiles found in both treats — a 

mix of smoky, bitter, fruitiness that can be 

blended to suit your palate. In the right hands, 

chocolate enhances the flavor of coffee, and 

vice versa. Coffee and chocolate have more 

than flavor in common. Their raw materials 

are grown in similar tropical areas and they 

share the shameful legacy of forced labor. 

Both are roasted, both were once reserved for 

the wealthy and powerful, and both played 

a role in the democratization of Europe, as 

coffee houses, where egalitarian ideas were 

spread, also served hot chocolate. Both products 

attracted the attention of the the Catholic 

church. Because of its association with Islamic 

ports like Mocha, Catholic leaders originally 

condemned coffee as a beverage of Satan. 

After sampling it, Pope Clement VIII declared 

it so delicious that it would be “a pity to let 

the infidels have exclusive use of it.” Similarly, 

an order of Carmelite friars had tried to ban 

chocolate as an “immoral luxury,” but Pope 

Alexander VII, who was not a fan of hot cocoa,

My wife and I were in Cape May visiting 

my wife’s sister and her husband. We stayed 

with them at their beautiful beach house and 

I wanted to show my appreciation by taking 

them to dinner at Oyster Bay, their favorite 

restaurant. The evening was a delight until the 

check came. I reached for it, but my brother-inlaw 

grabbed it. He insisted it was his treat. We 

went back and forth until I finally prevailed, 

but it put a tarnish on the whole night because 

it got heated. My wife was furious with me for 

being “so stubborn.” I feel I was right, but feel 

badly about the tension it caused. – Stupefied

than an act of gratitude. Is there more

to a breeder. He is around eight months old 

and underweight. He was kept in a crate for 

months, so he can be a bit socially awkward. 

He is a love bug who enjoys snuggles and is 

good with other dogs and cats. Jekyll is housetrained 

and up-to-date on all vaccinations. He 

is in search of a kind soul to help him flourish. 

TARA is a sweet seven-year-old Terrier. She is 

easy to harness and has wonderful leash skills. 

She also enjoys a quick run around the yard. 

Tara will solicit attention at her own pace and 

snuggles in once she feels comfortable. She is 

cat selective and can comfortably walk with 

other dogs. Tara has plenty of energy but is 

beyond the puppy craziness. 

BUDDY came to the shelter when his owner 

could no longer keep him. He was very loved 

and is waiting for his new home! He can be a 

bit nervous but warms up quickly. His leash 

skills are excellent and he loves to use his 

hound senses to study his surroundings while 

out on a walk. Buddy would do best in a quiet 

home as he is scared of loud noises.
