Turkish-Algerian relations up
Türkiye and Algeria share common history as well
as deep-rooted cultural and brotherly ties. Bilateral
relations have gained impetus over the past years. The
“Friendship and Cooperation Agreement”, which was
signed during the visit of the then Prime Minister
Erdoğan to Algeria in 2006, is a strong foundation on
which bilateral relations are based. During the visit of
President Erdoğan to Algeria in February 2018, various
aspects of the bilateral relations were taken up and both
sides have reiterated their readiness to further deepen
bilateral ties.
The Ministry of Trade and the Promotion of
Exportation, under the High Patronage of the President
of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE, and
in collaboration with the Algerian Company of Fairs
and Exports (SAFEX), organizes the 55th International
Fair of Algiers (FIA), at the Palace of Exports, based
in Pains Maritimes – Algiers, 24-29 June 2024. Turkiye
is the honorary participant at this year’s edition of the
fair. SAFEX is a leader in the events sector, organizing
national, international, local and regional economic
events and exhibitions in Algeria. SAFEX is also the
official organizer of Algeria’s participation in trade
fairs and exhibitions abroad. The fair is expected to
be an excellent meeting point for businesses
trading with Algeria and most part of Europe
New stage in Turkiye-Uzbekistan strategic
partnership and economic relations
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has received
his Uzbek counterpart Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the
presidential complex in the capital Ankara for bilateral
talks.
Mirziyoyev attended the seventh meeting of the Türkiye-
Uzbekistan High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council on
the first day of his visit. Türkiye and Uzbekistan signed
more than 20 agreements during the council meeting. The
meeting aims to build on the “comprehensive strategic
partnership” established two years ago during Erdoğan’s
visit to the Asian country.
The World was
Captivated by the Glitter
of PLMA Amsterdam Fair
“I believe that this important visit, which has great
meaning for us, will further strengthen our cooperation,”
Erdoğan said at a joint news conference with Mirziyoyev.
Noting that Erdoğan’s interest and affection for Uzbekistan
has increased over the years, Mirziyoyev said the meeting
was “very meaningful” and they built “new and stronger
bridges for cooperation.”
Türkiye was the first country to recognize Uzbekistan’s
independence in 1991, following the dissolution of the
Soviet Union. A new era is also emerging in trade relations
between Türkiye and Uzbekistan. The bilateral trade
volume, which was $1.2 billion in 2016, became $3.1
billion in 2023.
Türkiye, which was among the top 5 countries in
Uzbekistan’s foreign trade before 2016, became the
country’s 4th largest trading partner with a share of 5
percent last year.
Meanwhile, First Lady Emine Erdoğan welcomed
her Uzbek counterpart Ziroat Mirziyoyeva, who is
accompanying her husband Shavkat Mirziyoyeva for an
official visit with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The two first ladies visited the Presidential Library, the
largest library in Türkiye. The Uzbek first lady gifted
product by Turkish and international physicians. This innovation
is of great importance in Türkiye and worldwide.
Exosomes, the basic building blocks of cells, regulate biological
processes such as tissue regeneration and disease resistance by
providing communication between cells. Seltek Group’s patented
HybrosomeTM Technology provides healing and regeneration
at the cellular level by isolating exosomes and making them
available in the long term. This technology revolutionizes areas
such as anti-aging, skin regeneration, hair loss and wound healing
by carrying the vitamins and minerals that cells need.
“Made in Türkiye” when writing to advertisers
Türkiye and Algeria have a lot of values in common. These brethren
countries have common history, religion, culture and more…
When I go to Algiers, I see names of streets, squares, quarters,
mosques, even castles with the names very familiar in my country.
In the Kasba region, I see the same shape and atmosphere as I see
in Anatolia and in many parts of Istanbul. As I walk through the
narrow streets on the hillside, I can’t help but dive into the depths
of history. I think I will come across Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha at
some point. I always feel at home in that country.
We are excited to announce that Made in Türkiye newspaper will
be participating in the upcoming International Fair of Algiers (FIA),
where Turkey has the honor of being the honorary guest. This
prestigious event, taking place from June 17 to June 22, offers a
unique platform for us to showcase the vibrant and dynamic relationship
between Türkiye and Algeria.
In celebration of this special occasion, we have prepared a dedicated
World Bank revises up
global growth forecast for
2024
GDP growth projected at 2.6% this year, 2.7% in 2025-26
ANKARA – The World Bank revised the global growth forecast
for this year to 2.6%, up 0.2 percentage point from its previous
projection.
The figure is foreseen to hold steady compared to last year for the
first time in three years despite heightened geopolitical tensions
and high interest rates, the bank said in its latest Global Economic
Prospects report.
The upward revision was led by continued solid growth in the US,
it stressed.
The bank forecast the gross domestic product (GDP) growth will
edge up to an average of 2.7% in 2025-26 amid modest growth in
trade and investment.
The figure is below the 3.1% average in the decade before the
pandemic or 2010-19.
“Four years after the upheavals caused by the pandemic, conflicts,
inflation, and monetary tightening, it appears that global economic
growth is steadying,” said Indermit Gill, the World Bank Group’s
chief economist and senior vice president.
The GDP in developing economies are forecast to increase 4% on
average in 2024-25 and in advanced economies to hike 1.5% this
year before rising to 1.7% next year.
Gill underlined the need for developing economies to find ways to
encourage private investment, reduce public debt, and improve
education, health, and basic infrastructure.
The report highlighted that one in four developing economies is
expected to remain poorer than it was in 2019.
The World Bank hiked its growth projection for China by 0.3
percentage point to 4.8% this year, due to stronger-than-expected
activity in early 2024, particularly exports. The world’s secondlargest
economy is projected to grow 4.1% in 2025, down 0.32 point
from the January report.
The GDP in the US is expected to increase by 2.5% this year and
1.8% next year, with upward revisions of 0.9 point and 0.1 point,
respectively.
The euro area’s GDP growth is projected to come in at 0.7% in 2024,
the same as foreseen in the previous report, and 1.4% in 2025, a
downward revision of 0.2 points.
The Turkish economy’s growth forecast was cut by 0.1 point to 3%
for 2024 and 0.3 point to 3.6% for next year.
The World Bank projected the global inflation to average at 3.5%
this year and 2.9% in 2025.
Global interest rates are likely to remain high by the standards of
recent decades -- averaging about 4% over 2025-26, roughly double
the 2000-19 average, read the report.
2024
Sapro makes an innovative contribution to biodiversity!
The World was Captivated by the
Glitter of PLMA Amsterdam Fair
Continued From Page 1
The concept of biodiversity, which is used
to define the diversity of living things in the
whole ecosystem or only in a certain region,
is among the prominent topics in recent years.
Biodiversity is of vital importance for the
creation of a healthy environment suitable
for life.
This diversity, which is ensured by preserving
the natural balance, actually means the
continuation of life on earth.
There is a close relationship between sustainability
and biodiversity. When we look at
the issue from the perspective of our country,
we see that Türkiye has a wide variety of climate,
flora and fauna characteristics in 7 different
regions. Our country, which is home
to different climate types, offers a favorable
environment for endemic and genetically
diverse plants. So what should be done to
protect and develop this diversity?
Recently, various steps have been taken to
ensure biodiversity globally. For example,
the ‘EU Single Use Plastics Directive’ is
pushing wet wipe manufacturers and users
towards more environmentally friendly products
and waste management practices. This
is leading to the development of new composite
materials, improving recycling and
composting infrastructures and raising consumer
awareness.
Sapro contributes to biodiversity with €30
million investment
Underlining that they care about the natural
life cycle, Murat Gönül, General Manager at
Sapro said, “In 2022, we launched our Newipe
next generation Viscose fabric with an investment
of 30 million Euros. Newipe® is an
environmentally and future-friendly product
with its natural structure that dissolves quickly
in nature and does not contain plastic.
Our product, which we developed with the
awareness of environmental sustainability,
contains 100 percent renewable plant fibers.
When recycled, it can be broken down into
non-toxic components that will not harm
the environment and can easily turn into
organic matter when dispersed. The most
critical point in this regard is that the product
has composting properties. Compostable
products provide nutrients and organic matter
to the soil as they decompose. This makes
the soil more fertile and encourages plant
growth. Healthier soil allows more plant
species to thrive, which increases biodiversity.
Compostable products also help reduce
greenhouse gas emissions by absorbing carbon
dioxide as they decompose. Reduced
greenhouse gas levels reduce the effects of
climate change, which in turn helps to protect
biodiversity.
Compared to other viscose fabrics, Newipe®
is produced with reduced carbon emissions
as some of its components are taken into the
production process without any pre-treatment,
and it can be fully biodegraded and
composted faster in nature.”
Newipe®’s compostable feature recognized
by TUV certificates
Recording that the compostable feature of
Newipe® has been registered with ‘TUV OK
Compost Home’ and ‘TUV OK Compost
Industrial’ certificates as a result of the tests,
Gönül said, “TUV OK Compost certificate is
a document showing that our Newipe next
generation Viscose fabric is sustainable and
environmentally friendly. This certificate
proves that our fabric is fully biodegradable
and compostable under industrial and home
composting conditions by meeting certain
test criteria, while confirming that the product
turns into organic matter without harming
the environment. With our product,
we help reduce the amount of waste while
protecting the environment. Thus, we contribute
to a more sustainable use of natural
resources and the protection of biodiversity.”
Murat Gönül, General Manager at Sapro
said, “Considering the increasing legal regulations
to reduce plastic pollution that have
started in Europe, the ‘TUV OK Compost’
certificate proves that our Newipe next generation
Viscose Fabric complies with these
regulations. The transition to plastic-free
wipes will help to meet future legal requirements
and strengthen the market position of
our private label brands.”
Early diagnosis plays a critical role in MPS disease
Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS),
a subtype of Lysosomal Storage
Diseases (LSD), are rare diseases
caused by a deficiency of
enzymes in the body that break
down substances called Glycosaminoglycans.
This deficiency can
lead to the accumulation of these
substances in lysosomes and,
over time, to problems in cells
and organs.
Depending on which lysosomal enzyme
is deficient, the symptoms of MPS can
vary depending on the severity and rate
of progression of the disease.
systems, interior decoration solutions and catering
services were exhibited at the exhibition,
where the latest developments in in-flight comfort,
safety, entertainment and communication
technologies were revealed.
Marked the fair with sustainable products
Stating that they produce products such as
food containers, cups, tray sets and tableware
used in more than 50 airlines in the world such
as THY, Emirates, Qatar, Lufthansa, Austrian
Airlines and Singapore Airlines, Yavuz Eroğlu,
Chairman of the Board of Directors of SEM
Plastik, said that they attracted the attention
of all participants at the fair, especially with
in-cabin sustainable catering concepts and
equipment. Explaining that sustainability is becoming
increasingly important in airlines and
that they have made important innovations in
this regard, Eroğlu stated that they presented
new product groups focused on sustainability
to the taste of world airlines.
Noting that they design according to the customer’s
request and carry out studies to maximize
the passenger experience on the road
Eroğlu continued his words as follows:
“In the last year, our first prize in ‘Circular Plastics
Management’ at the Sustainable Business
Awards and the ‘Closed Cycle Recycling Project
of Trays at Pegasus Airlines’, in which we
won first prize in the Plastic Recycling Competition,
attracted great attention. As SEM, we sell
RPET cups, which are produced from recycled
bottles with lower carbon emissions than all alternatives
and have international certification,
to many airlines. In addition, our design team
carries out all the design, modeling, prototype
and pilot production stages of an airline from
scratch for economy, business and first class
concepts. With the labor of our local designers
and engineers, we make our mark on the products
of 50 airlines around the world.”
Special thanks to THY and Turkish Do&Co
Emphasizing that Turkish Airlines and Turkish
Do&Co have a special place for them, Eroğlu
said, “In our cooperation with THY, which has
been going on for nearly 40 years, we develop
sustainable, useful and stylish equipment that
enables passengers to travel pleasantly. In this
process, we owe them a debt of gratitude for
giving us the opportunity to replace almost all
of the products, all of which came from abroad
years ago, with domestic products created with
the labor of Turkish engineers and designers,
and for their support in transforming us into a
global manufacturer of in-cabin catering containers.”
On the other hand, in addition to SEM Plastik,
Turkish companies such as Turkish Cabin
Interiors, Turkish Airlines (THY) and Kordsa
also made a show in the international arena.
Consul General of Hamburg Emine Derya
Kara and Hamburg Commercial Attaché Yıldız
Onur also visited the Turkish companies in the
fair area and received information about their
work. AIX, where agreements were signed for
collaborations and new projects between leading
companies in the sector, is of great importance
for players in the global supply chain to
establish strategic partnerships.
1.43 kilograms of cabin waste is produced in
one flight
At a time when environmental awareness is
paramount, the travel industry is increasingly
recognizing the importance of in-flight sustainability.
According to the latest data from
the International Air Transport Association
(IATA), a passenger generates an average of
1.43 kilograms of cabin waste on short and
long-haul international flights. Of this, 23 percent
is untouched food and beverages and 17
percent is recyclable materials such as plastic
bottles and newspapers.

Our feet hurt,
I would like to thank Peggy
Davies, President of PLMA,
and the entire staff for hosting
brands from around the world,
visitors and other industry stakeholders
who were in Amsterdam
to learn about what’s new,
innovations and industry trends.
The busy booths, the bustle
in the aisles and the hustle and
bustle between the halls were all
signs of a successful show. It was
exciting to get new ideas and
new business contacts brought
a smile to faces. At PLMA Amsterdam
this year, we had sore
feet from the hustle and bustle,
but I am happy to report that
there were no disappointments
and no headaches. This shows
that the fair was a success and
everyone left Amsterdam satisfied.
Many brands are already
looking forward to PLMA Amsterdam
on May 20-21, 2025.
