After another crazy year in the superyacht world 

we’re delighted to bring you our sixth edition of 

the annual Tenders & Toys Magazine. 

2021 was another record breaker in many 

ways within the industry, but with this also 

came massive supply and demand issues, 

manufacturing hold-ups and of course we were 

still experiencing some travel issues. 

However, the industry as a whole continued 

moving forward with innovation, many new tender 

models hit the ocean waves and the owners and 

charter guests were shown just how incredible 

the superyacht world really is. 

Of course none of this is possible without the 

people behind the scenes in every corner of the 

industry; the innovators, designers, shipyards, 

refit yards, service and supply companies, 

technical personnel and not forgetting the 

incredible yacht crew themselves. 

As a whole, the industry is still creeping towards 

reducing its carbon footprint and there are many 

new ocean conservation initiatives coming online, 

but there is still some hard work to do if we want 

to continue enjoying our incredible ocean. 

The electric tender market is growing fast and we 

have seen many traditional combustion engine 

manufacturers turn their attention, RnD and 

budgets to developing alternative low emission 

engines, which is very encouraging. 

To finish, once again many thanks to all of our 

partners, journalists, PR experts, yacht crew and 

friends in the industry who have been part of our 

journey over the past 11 years.

BEST TENDER YOU’VE EVER DRIVEN 

Without doubt from my long tenure on Rio Rita my 

favourite tender was the Novamarine HD700 (with the 

commercial spec) with twin 115hp outboards but with counter 

rotating lower units and props, it made docking an absolute 

treat. The crew and boss loved them too, so the other vessels 

within the Latsis fleet also ran with the Novamarine 10m 

HD1000 RIBs. In fact I liked the 10m so much I actually bought 

the ‘Beastie’. 


BEST LOOKING TENDER ON THE MARKET 

The Rafnar for so many reasons. You’d also understand more 

if you’ve actually driven one. The ride and control in rougher 

seas is quite unique. It’s not just about the genre- defining hull 

but the design team have brought this craft in to a new marine 

segment and with unlimited custom options, it would be hard 

to top this tender in terms of performance, ride quality and 

handling and if you want all the superyacht bells and whistles 

then the Rafnar team can deliver.

No competition here - the 

Aquarama from Riva. 

Just a classic in every sense 

of the word. Riva actually 

produced these from 1962 

until 1996. The hulls were 

sheathed in mahogany 

and heavily varnished to

on the engine choice which

From my previous choices I think you can guess what type 

of tender really excites me. SAFE Boat International have

Helidecks considers the 

critical requirements for 

the safe use of helicopter 

landing areas onboard 

superyachts 

The world of maritime aviation has 

come through the global pandemic 

and we are now busier than ever. 

Our services are in demand from 

shipyards, superyacht designers, owners 

and captains. One day we can be hopping on 

a flight to visit yards and give advice on the 

design of a superyacht’s helidecks and the 

next day, we’re flying out to superyachts 

to review their helicopter operations and 

complete the inspections and certifications. 

Chris Wood is an ex-Naval Aviator with 20 

years of ship/air integration experience, 

including 6 years working at Safeguard 

Helidecks, an Aviation Inspection Body (AIB) 

authorised by the Maritime and Coastguard 

Agency (MCA). But what does that really 

mean? It means that they have the authority 

to inspect superyacht helidecks and certify 

that they meet the regulations and standards 

required for commercial aviation on board 

superyachts. 

Considering the future for superyacht 

design 

Chris and his team like nothing better than 

to look ahead and consider the future for 

superyacht aviation. Will there be more 

demand for duel flying capabilities going 

forward? Will the time come when there 

will be a requirement to have an air traffic 

control function onboard, for when the 

helidecks are operating concurrently? And 

what about Tilt Rotor Aircraft - how long 

is it before we see these aircraft onboard? 

These are all things that will no doubt be 

a topic of conversation for future design 

groups and who knows, we may even see 

the introduction of unmanned aerial vehicles 

(UAVs) onboard superyachts in the not too 

distant future! 

When not contemplating the future, the 

team’s focus is very much on their day job 

which can be broadly split into two areas. 

The certification process – design 

Our role as an AIB is to ensure that aviation 

onboard superyachts is taking place in the 

safest possible manor, but superyacht 

designs are constantly evolving with many 

owners now specifying a requirement for 

multiple helidecks. The safety implications 

for this are considerable as the possibility 

of concurrent flying operations from the 

same vessel throws up numerous hazards 

that need to be carefully addressed. 

We therefore encourage early engagement 

of our team when a yacht is at the design 

stage, so that our expertise in deck loading, 

air flow disruption and helideck location can 

be fully utilised. This allows for a smooth 

process in gaining the required helideck 

certification for the completed yacht. It is 

important to be aware that a Helicopter 

Landing Area Technical Certificate (HLATC) 

covering the design activities will remain 

valid for as long as the design remains 

unchanged. But any later design changes 

would require a new HLATC to be issued. 

It is also important to ensure the owner’s 

needs and requirements have been met fully. 

In our experience this includes checking 

that the design team know which helicopter 

the owner plans to operate on their yacht 

as the deck loading requirements for a 

H125 are significantly different to those 

of a H175. If this is not accounted for 

then changes may have to be made to the 

helicopter landing area/s and this in turn 

can impact the overall aesthetic of the 

yacht and delay the completion. We are well 

versed in working with multiple teams to 

ensure that such pitfalls can be avoided, the 

completion can be on time and the aviation 

safety requirements are met. 

The certification process – operational 

We do our best to be as responsive as 

possible to our clients and will fly wherever

constantly evolving with 

many owners now specifying 

a requirement for multiple 

helidecks on board 

we are required to provide a helideck 

assessment. Trips to South Africa and 

Chile are not uncommon. We have great 

respect for the privacy of our clients and 

regularly work with a Non-Disclosure 

Agreement in place. 

Once onboard for a Helideck Certification 

Assessment, we look at a number of 

critical elements to ensure they meet 

the required standards. These include: the 

helideck dimension, layout, obstructions, 

deck friction levels, landing area markings 

lighting, and structural considerations. 

We also review the fire detection 

and extinguishing arrangements, the 

emergency equipment, procedures, and all 

documentation associated with helicopter 

operations onboard. Once the criteria for 

the inspection have been satisfied then a 

Helicopter Landing Area Inspection Report 

(HLAIR) and a Helicopter Landing Area 

Certificate (HLAC) are generated, and a 

thorough debrief given to the vessel’s crew. 

A HLAC covering operations will be valid 

for 12 months, but it will cease to be 

valid if there is a change of ownership, the 

name of the vessel changes, or if there 

are material changes to the helicopter 

landing area, aviation facilities or equipment 

without consultation and approval from 

an AIB. As a team, Safeguard Helidecks 

have over 60 years of experience operating 

helicopters on vessels at sea in the military. 

Our team comprises of ex-military aircrew, 

flight deck officers, survival specialists, safety 

management specialists, engineers and naval 

architects. We live and breathe maritime 

aviation and strive to ensure that superyachts 

can enjoy their helicopter operations in the 

safest way possible.

What does the future of tender design look like? It’s a big question, and 

one that we chose to explore with Richard Faulkner and leading custom 

tender brand, Compass Tenders 

The superyacht marketplace is 

constantly evolving: Bigger. Faster. 

Further. The operations of a tender 

are inextricably linked to that of 

the mothership and, as owners push to 

explore the far-flung corners of the earth, 

spend more time aboard and in a more 

sustainably considered way, the tenders 

they carry must also evolve to meet these 

changing requirements. 

The past 10 years have seen tender design 

become far more considered and refined, 

with the mothership-matching limousine 

tenders becoming a more and more popular 

choice. This period has also seen tenders 

increase in size and, for utility craft and 

open tenders, serve a whole new set of 

operational needs. 

“When it comes to larger superyachts, 

we find our clients frequently requesting 

a small fleet of tenders, perhaps three 

or even four, for the same vessel in order 

to fulfill an array of roles – the diversity 

of which simply hasn’t been seen before,” 

comments Richard Faulkner, Founder and 

CEO of Compass Tenders. 

“Owners want to travel between the 

superyacht and the shore in luxury, in a 

tender appointed to the same superlative 

standards as their superyacht and often in 

complementary style. They want to spend 

extended days exploring the coastline or 

enjoying various water sports with their 

family and expect premium performance, a 

luxurious ride and stability in every instance, 

no matter the main purpose of the tender.” 

It’s not only the design that has had to 

adapt, but construction materials and 

propulsion methods, too. Faulkner advises 

that they’ve seen a marked move away 

from jet propulsion, and the introduction of 

stabilisers to smooth motion, both underway 

and at anchor, are now becoming expected 

as standard. 

“We are using more elaborate and detailed 

tooling to produce various components, and 

each time it’s a refinement and advancement 

on the last – we are continuously reviewing, 

researching and progressing in order to 

remain at the forefront of tender design 

and build.” Faulkner elaborates further: “You 

wouldn’t think it, but one of the biggest 

changes to come about in recent years is

and more effective, advanced optics have 

heightened the possibilities for night-time 

operation.” 

Other onboard comforts and amenities, such 

as climate control and integrated audiovisual 

systems, have also made longer periods 

spent aboard a tender more acceptable. 

The use of glass has also increased, just as 

it has in superyacht design and build, and it’s 

commonly now a practical, structural, and 

aesthetic element of a tender’s make up. 

The biggest change to the tender market 

in recent years, has come in the form of 

utility vessels. Acting as an ‘SUV of the 

seas’, these versatile craft can operate as 

satellite platforms for a full day of water 

sports, with a day head, essential galley 

equipment, cushioned sun pads and shade. 

“Absolutely, the SUV of the seas has become 

a whole new trend. We’ve created utility 

boats with hydraulic bow doors to facilitate 

easy beach landings and disembarkation, and 

other clients have encouraged us to push 

the design envelope even further, turning 

their tenders into additional ‘floating’ beach 

clubs,” says Faulkner. 

Compass launched their first catamaran 

tender in 2020, in response to this trend. 

“It’s a gamechanger!” declares Faulkner. 

“As a platform it’s exceptionally stable and

quad bikes, for exploring ashore.” Compass 

completed the build of a second catamaran 

tender this year and expect more orders 

to follow. 

Looking to the future of tender design and 

build, the picture is harder to define. Faulkner 

comments: “Alternative power sources and 

propulsion methods are undoubtedly going 

to come into play but at this time, it’s 

unclear whether we’ll see widespread uptake 

of this in the next two, five or ten years. 

Technology is advancing at an incredible 

pace but often, before something has a 

chance to take hold in the marketplace, 

it’s replaced by the next ‘new’ thing. As an 

industry sector, I don’t think we’ve settled 

on the answer yet.” 

Faulkner agrees, however, that non-fossil 

fuel solutions and tender propulsion methods 

are where there’s most potential for change. 

As owners become more environmentally 

considered in their actions and a younger 

demographic of eco-conscious owners enter 

the industry, green solutions are naturally 

going to become more sought after. 

If owner usage habits remain as they are 

for superyachts, then we could see a need 

for greater autonomy come into play with 

tenders. Negating the need to refuel and 

extending range capability would once again 

widen the array of purposes a tender is 

able to fulfill. 

With regard to construction, Faulkner is keen 

to highlight the part 3D printing can play: 

“3D printed shapes and forms are already 

having an enormous impact on our design 

and build processes. We’re able to model 

components, print and test them before 

investing in their further development and 

implementation aboard a tender, and this 

broadens design possibilities further still.” 

Compass Tenders are a company widely 

regarded as trend setters rather than 

followers, but the market will only evolve 

at the pace set by the owners and those 

with more progressive demands for the look 

and purpose of their tenders. “I don’t think 

owners will ever stop turning to Compass

With the average superyacht tender changing 

dramatically over the past 10 years in terms 

of size, speed and ability to traverse greater 

distances in more open seas, the comfort and safety of 

crew and passengers has been brought to the forefront. 

Of course there are still the luxurious limo tenders poodling 

along at 5 knots for about 5 minutes bringing the guests 

from the yacht to the quayside, but the majority of the new 

tenders we’re seeing come into the market are built for 

a thrilling ride over the waves at speed. With this speed

although the seats obviously still need to have that luxury

Along with larger superyachts come larger tenders and 

a myriad of toys, but how do you decide on the right 

davit or crane used to move these on and off the yacht? 

Frances and Michael Howorth take a look at the leading 

manufacturers and suppliers in the market 

The excitement of boarding a superyacht by tender 

or from ashore often overshadows the magnificence 

and quality engineering of the equipment that makes 

such actions possible. In fact, it is probably fair to say 

that, when it comes to guests boarding superyachts, 

they probably never give such equipment even a single thought. 

But for those of us in the industry who know of such matters, 

the choice of the right crane, passerelle, boarding ladder or set 

of davits is of paramount importance. 

Passerelles need to be, safe and offer those using them, quick, 

worry-free access when boarding a superyacht. Good examples 

are designed to work well and look good, providing elegant and 

timeless entrances for guests and crew alike. 

Cranes and davits that lift boats, tenders, jet skis and other 

water toys on board need to do so unobtrusively, quickly and 

quietly so that guests are seldom aware of their existence. 

Bathing platforms that raise and lower into the sea must be 

faultless and stunningly beautiful when they allow guests easy, 

safe access to the water, while deckhead mounted cranes that 

service the yacht’s garage need to work seamlessly when loading 

or discharging water toys. 

There was a time when, to ferry 

guests ashore, all a yacht needed 

was a roll up inflatable tender and 

a portable outboard engine stowed 

inside the lazarette. Now not only 

has the roll up tender morphed 

into a large, inboard-engined, multi 

passenger carrying RIB, but the 

lazarette has been forgotten on most yachts and has been fully 

replaced by a garage. But these advances in size technology and 

carrying capacity have meant that instead of a single deckhand 

heaving a roll away dinghy up and onto the deck before inflating 

it to the point that it can be thrown single-handedly over the 

side, superyacht crews now rely on custom built equipment to 

help them in their tasks. 

Fortunately, as demand increased, so too, did the realisation that 

specialist companies needed to design and build this equipment. 

Products were brought to market and have for the most part 

found favour with the yacht captain and their crew. Today’s market 

allows them to select from a wide range of standard modular 

solutions or fully-customised boarding equipment to meet their 

wishes and demands. 


PASSERELLES 

To reach the quay, passerelles typically have to offer a reach of 

up to 10 metres or more. The Dutch engineering firm Cramm, 

offer customised passerelles in any desired length. Feebe is 

another Dutch engineering specialist that builds quality overhead 

cranes used inside the garages of some of the world’s largest 

and best run superyachts. While Fuchs Cranes of Germany are 

acknowledged favourites of German yacht builders, the likes of 

Lurssen, Aberking Rassmussen, and Nobiskrug. Hydromar, based 

in Holland has the market well sewn up given that it owns both 

the Cramm brand and that of Swissway Marine, both of whom 

make quality kit which is the norm from these northern European 

designers. When it comes to maintenance, Geetech in Monaco 

offer all the back up engineering and servicing you will ever need 

to keep this kit pristine and working to perfection. 

CRAMM YACHTING SYSTEMS 

Cramm has evolved over the years from a company specialised 

in hydraulics to a company specialised in hydraulic equipment 

for the ultimate yacht. First and foremost Cramm developed 

equipment allowing access to yachts, passerelles and 

accommodation ladders, bulwark stowed or sliding underneath 

the deck into a watertight box, telescopic, rotating, inclining, 

all built from premium materials to an impeccable standard,

Based on the available space, manufacturers such as Cramm, 

Hydromar and Seawalk offer various different types of passerelles: 

non-telescopic, single telescopic and double telescopic, with 

non-telescopic requiring the most build-in space and the double 

telescopic the least. When space is extremely limited on the 

yacht, the extendable lorry offers a good space-saving solution. 

The double telescopic lorry system can store two lorries on top 

of each other, reducing the required length enormously compared 

to a standard lorry; the height of the box is doubled to just only 

650 mm. This space saving enables other equipment and systems 

to take maximum advantage of the available space in the yacht. 

Passerelles made this way of lightweight construction, manufactured 

from aluminium results in a device with high torque stiffness, 

minimal bending and a weight reduction of 25% to 35% compared 

to their alternatives. Most of the better passerelles offer two 

standard systems for ease of use in every docking position. The 

fixed passerelle is ideal for docking with the stern to quay, where 

no rotation is needed to board the yacht. Using a rotating slewing 

frame, rotating passerelles can be swung towards the quay at 

an angle of 90° on both sides. Handy, when docking and there is 

an obstacle is in the way, the slewing frame can easily reposition 

a passerelle to the sides without the need to re-dock the yacht. 

BOARDING LADDERS 

Philippus Feenstra, owner of Feebe Boarding Equipment works 

alongside Nynke Rijpkema to design, make and install some of the 

world’s most ingenious superyacht boarding solutions. He says, 

“We are one of the best brands in Holland, and I believe Holland 

is THE place to go for yachts and equipment, I’ve been told the 

Dutch are masters in combining good aesthetics and reliability. 

We have been around since 2008 and we’re still steadily 

growing. The number of Feebe-fans is increasing, we hear 

that a lot in the market. We like the positive feedback 

and also any kind of feedback, we’ve been around for quite 

some time and we are still learning. We are a private 

owned company, the owners are in the company every 

day, and we have no external shareholders to please, 

so we can fully focus on meeting expectations.” Talking 

about some of the company’s most recent successful 

projects, Nynke Rijpkema said, “We have combined a 

fold-out balcony with and integrated side boarding ladder. 

We have made cranes able to lift 6 tonnes, but in stored 

position very low profile so it is hidden behind the bulwark, 

and not interfering with the yacht’s lines.” 

Barry McCrindle the project manager, chief engineer, and owner’s 

representative provides a solid endorsement saying, “For future 

projects my first stop would be Feebe without question and 

without any doubt.” He explained, “With the difficult task of 

a short lead time on a bespoke crane in combination with a 

foremast, Feebe was the only company that would take on the 

tight timeline for delivery of the crane for Sanoo, a 61m classic 

Feadship. From start to finish Feebe delivered what was asked 

without question. The final product worked flawlessly and any 

requests for slight changes by the crew during the first season 

were dealt with swiftly and with complete professionalism.” 

DECK CRANES 

Deck cranes are indispensable on a yacht, for essential jobs 

such as loading materials, jet skis, dinghies, and provisions 

aboard. Generally speaking, base frames and booms are made of 

stainless steel, though on some cranes, aluminium is also used. 

Cranes on superyachts need to be suitable for handling stores, 

MOB and SOLAS purposes and should be capable of completing 

all functions under its full Safe Working Load (SWL) load, and in 

all positions. In some cases, dependent on needs and location, 

articulated boom designs are employed. Hydromar, Fuchs and 

Feebe are all well established and competent manufacturers 

and each offer models to suit just about every situation offering 

ease of operation with a wide range of standard electric drives, 

hydraulics and controls. 

In American terminology, the word for deck crane is davit and 

American based, UMT’s VX davit is a robust and versatile yacht

crane. It can be mounted using a low profile base configuration 

or a higher profile pedestal base. It is the ideal crane for any 

yacht 24 metres and above with larger capacity and reach 

requirements. It can be mounted on any deck using a regular or 

rotating standpipe or pedestal base. 

Remco Zeevaarder is the Sales Manager at Cramm Yachting 

Systems, a position he has held for the last four years. He is 

no stranger to the industry having joined it some 30 years ago 

over which period he has worked for, amongst others, Rondal. 

He says, “Cramm is best known for their high quality custom 

solutions where special requirements have to be met. We design 

and build cranes that fit the yacht, whereas others offer a crane 

around which the yacht needs to be designed. In other words, 

we go the extra mile and try to make life easier for our clients. 

Most times this means working around space constrictions.” 

Since 2006, Martin Kranenburg has been the Technical Director 

at Van Driel B.V. in Holland and is responsible for the technical 

side of new build and service. He began working for the firm 

on the shop floor in 1992 and knows a great deal about the 

way lifting gear works. He tells us, “80 % of our products are 

custom made by us at the request of the client, so if a crane 

needs to fit inside a superstructure, we engineer it first in 3D 

to make it fit and flush with the surroundings. Workmanship to 

the highest quality, detail and finish are all important to us.” 

GARAGE CRANES 

Overhead cranes, sometimes called garage cranes, can be a highly 

functional hoisting solution aboard a yacht. Overhead cranes 

generally employ one or two extendable/retractable booms that 

can pass through an opening in the hull of the yacht. Booms 

feature attached lifting points to which the tender and other 

items can be secured. There are, generally speaking, two different 

types of garage cranes: Sliding beam and Slewing beam. Sliding 

beam cranes are the most employed and have SWLs that range 

from 500 towards 4000 kg per arm. They are often used as 

single arm cranes for smaller tenders or jet skis. Larger yachts 

tenders are often launched alongside with a set of two sliding 

davits. Slewing beam cranes are used to create a fully flexible 

tender garage layout. As these cranes are mounted to the 

bulkheads of the tender garage, the deck construction can be 

lower compared to fixed sliding beam cranes.Tenders and toys 

are conveniently stored in the forward garage and launched 

through gull-wings doors on each side. This leaves space in the 

lazarette for a wide beach club and gym with a generous swim 

platform for owner and guests to swim and relax right at the 

sea’s edge. Most overhead cranes are powered in one of two 

ways using either a hydraulic or an electric drive.

“We were one of the first suppliers of electrically driven tender 

boat cranes and have developed DNVGL-type approved stainless 

steel hooks suitable for combined tender-rescue boat cranes. “ 

Peter is proud of the customer service his company provides and 

recalls a situation where recently, somewhere in the Caribbean 

between the Bahamas and Miami, a superyacht fitted with Fuchs 

equipment had a problem. 

He told us, “The owner had taken the yacht’s tender away on a 

fishing trip and while he was away, and the yacht was stationary 

the crew took the opportunity to work on the yacht’s Jet Skis 

opening the stern doors and extending the crane to do so. 

When the owner returned from fishing, he instructed the crew 

to pack up and head for Miami ‘toute de suite’. In their haste 

to stow everything away quickly disaster struck. The wireless 

remote-control panel needed to operate the crane fell over the 

side, the crew watched it sink and it was lost. 

That was not a problem (or so they thought) because a spare 

control panel that could be plugged into the unit using a cable, 

was stored in the engine room. Unfortunately, in their haste 

(once again) to retrieve said spare control, the cable and its 

plug caught on a fire door and the plug was destroyed. Efforts 

to repair the plug on board were in vain and the vessel, with her 

stern door still wide open, was unable to proceed. The yacht 

contacted Fuchs asking for advice. Minutes later, technicians 

were connected to the yacht’s control system using a satellite 

connection. 

They rapidly connected an emergency control programme and 

instructed the chief engineer on how to make some changes to 

the electronics, making it possible to operate the crane again 

without a control panel. Crane retracted, the door was safely 

closed, and the vessel resumed her voyage arriving in Miami 

before the owner became too irate!

MOVEABLE BATHING PLATFORMS 

An alternative to lifting a tender or jet ski into or out of the 

water is to float it on or off a platform. Hydraulically operated 

moving swim platforms are frequently built with this feature 

incorporated into them and the system works well on sail boats 

and smaller motor yachts whose overall length precludes a garage. 

The Seascape is a hydraulic moving bathing platform made by 

Hydromar using a Z-shaped movement crankshaft mechanism 

compromising of two sets of cylinders which drive the crankshaft 

system. It can be produced in several sizes in which further 

variables are possible. 

Early incarnations of devices such as these suffered failure when 

large waves from astern caused damage to the platform. Hydromar 

have allowed for this potential problem by fitting an integrated 

breaking mechanism to deal with the critical loadings which are 

caused by waves that are too large. The mechanism can be 

replaced by the crew without the need of shoreside assistance 

and even if parts are not available on board, the seascape is 

able to be used with breaking mechanism un-mended making the 

Hydromar a reliable bathing platform that cannot be damaged 

beyond repair due to a too high sea state.

When in use lifting gear can be ugly to look at and can spoil 

the line or look of a yacht. Over the years manufacturers have 

designed equipment that not only functions well but looks good 

and fits in with the surroundings when stowed away. Remco 

Zeevaarder at Cramm Yachting Systems says, “Sliding beam 

cranes are usually hidden above the panelling in the tender garage. 

Deck cranes are designed to look as nice as possible for such a 

functional piece of kit, with tapering jibs and faired covers, but 

they are also often hidden away in tender wells. Of course, all 

our cranes are faired and finished in superyacht quality paint.” 

Philippus Feenstra, owner of Feebe Boarding Equipment understands 

the problem. He says, “We are very well aware that our range 

of products are not only essential to have, but also can be an 

obstacle to recreational space on board. So, we keep our lines 

as clean as we can, to make the product nicely blend into the 

yacht’s atmosphere. We make our equipment so that the outsides 

are nicely matching the yacht, and the machinery is all hidden 

on the inside. Functionality is essential but for us this does not 

mean that the guests need to be bothered. Ideally they should 

not notice we are there.” Peter Pfabe the Managing Director

SERVICE 

Lifting kit will at some stage require servicing and given the 

critical standards lifting gear is expected to adhere to, it does 

not make sense to cut corners when it comes to maintenance. 

Documents detailing the yachts insurance clauses often spell 

out the perils of not having lifting gear checked by experts on a 

regular basis. Remember much of this equipment is used to lift 

people as well as equipment. 

In Monaco, servicing the Mediterranean region, from Barcelona

centre, the Belassi team spent around three months 

designing the Marine Hypercraft using 3D software. 

In total it took about one and a half years to create 

this piece of commitment, endurance and know-how. 

Each Burrasca is built from more than 2,000 parts, 

individually assembled by hand and tested for hundreds 

of hours. Austrian quality and high-precision engineering 

is applied down to the smallest detail.

The cockpit and chassis are crafted with numerous 

carbon parts that combine maximum strength with 

low weight and a sharp design. The Belassi engineers 

have also achieved a masterpiece with the hull. Thanks 

to the ingenious hydrodynamics and the various 

stabilizers, extreme cornering speeds with up to 4g 

acceleration are possible with the Burrasca. The tight 

integration of the engine and the drivetrain are in 

perfect synergy. This makes the Hypercraft stand

acceleration. The hull geometry, inlet pump channel 

and drivetrain harmonise perfectly. 

The highly motorised, powerful machine is characterised 

by uncompromising forward thrust and a sharp, precise

and exude energy and excitement. The powerful heart, 

the turbo-charged three-cylinder engine developed 

in-house, produces a massive 320 hp.

KNOW YOUR DIVING EQUIPMENT 

We all use scuba diving equipment each 

time we dive, but do we really know the 

names of each part of our gear? Maybe 

you only know the acronym (BCD) or slang 

(occy) names for certain parts of your gear? 

Besides, we all know that diving is full of 

acronyms and shortened terms! 

Whether you’re looking to purchase your 

first set of gear, want to learn more about 

your equipment or if you just don’t want to 

mispronounce anything, here is a basic guide 

of scuba diving equipment for beginners, 

so listen up. 

Being divers, the majority of us have come 

across or regularly wear a wetsuit. But 

have you ever heard other divers refer to 

their wetsuit with a different term? Some 

refer to their wetsuit as a ‘wetty’ (slang 

for wetsuit), ‘steamer’ (long wetsuit) and 

‘shorty’ or ‘spring suit’ (short wetsuit). 

Despite what you call yours, wetsuits are 

essential for protecting your skin and keeping 

you warm while you are diving down into 

the deep blue. 

BUOYANCY CONTROL DEVICE 

Most divers refer to their Buoyancy Control 

Device as their BCD or BC for short. Much 

like the name, this piece of equipment is 

crucial to any diver’s buoyancy and essential 

to have when diving. With practice, your 

BCD will help keep you neutrally buoyant 

(well, that’s the goal) as you either inflate 

or deflate air into your BCD. Some divers 

even use an integrated weight system that 

has pockets to hold their weights (this will 

minimise or eliminate you having to wear 

a weight belt). 

REGULATORS 

While most divers have only heard the term 

regulator during their diving course or in 

conjunction with ‘don’t forget your dust 

cap’, this piece of equipment is essential 

to any dive. Your first stage is actually used 

to attach your primary second stage to 

the cylinder valve and reduce high-pressure 

gas to breathable pressure. Your primary 

second stage is the regulator that you 

put in your mouth which then allows you 

to breathe underwater. 


Haven’t heard the team ‘alternate second 

stage’? This is actually an alternate air 

source for your buddy, also known as 

octopus, occy or buddy regulator. Your 

alternate second stage is a backup regulator 

in case you need to share your air with 

another diver in out-of-air emergencies. 

Your octopus is generally always a bright 

colour such as neon yellow, so that it can 

be easily seen by all divers underwater. 

Without these pieces of equipment, you 

wouldn’t be able to breathe underwater. 

INSTRUMENTS 

A diver must always carry a pressure 

gauge along with a dive computer during 

each dive. Your pressure gauge allows you 

to view how much air you have remaining 

in your cylinder. Your dive computer will 

measure your depth, dive time and while 

also helping to calculate how long you can 

stay at particular depths underwater. 

Furthermore, depending on what type of 

dive computer you have, you might also 

have the ability to calculate your safety 

stops and no-fly time.

WEIGHTS 

Who has jumped into the water and either 

sunk straight to the bottom or floated on 

top of the water even after deflating? You 

might need to rethink how many weights 

you are using during your dive. Some divers 

either wear a weight belt while diving or use 

an integrated weight system that holds their 

weights in the weight pockets. 

While all divers generally need extra weight 

to get to the bottom, it is entirely up to 

the diver and their equipment whether they 

would like to wear a weight belt or carry 

their weights in their BCD. 

MASK, SNORKEL AND FINS 

All divers should be diving with a mask, snorkel 

and fins. As we all know, human eyes are 

not designed to be used to see underwater. 

So a diving mask is a perfect solution! After 

all, who wants to go diving and miss out 

on all the beautiful marine life underwater? 

Diving masks come in all different shapes, 

sizes and colours so make sure you get one 

that fits properly. Otherwise, you will need 

to quickly learn how to master the ‘clear 

water from your mask’ skill from your Open 

Water Diver course.

The Q Boat from The World Is Not Enough 

The World Is Not Enough opens with the longest pre-credit sequence 

in 007 history lasting 14 minutes. After retrieving a large sum of 

money from a Swiss banker in Bilbao, James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) 

hands it over to oil tycoon Sir Robert King (David Calder) at MI6 HQ in 

London. When the money explodes killing King, Bond sees the Cigar 

Girl assassin (Maria Grazia Cucinotta), not just your average assassin 

either, in a Sunseeker Superhawk 34 trying to shoot him. So, Bond 

(borrows) steals a small experimental boat from Q branch to give chase. 

The high-speed pursuit takes place along the Thames, past the Houses 

of Parliament ending at the Millennium Dome where the assassin 

comes to a spectacular end. Fifteen versions of ‘Q’s high-tech boat 

were made, just four of which were fully functional, powered by 5.7L V8 

engines, operated through a jet drive. The production team captured 

the most spectacular moment in the sequence as Bond’s boat performs 

a mid-air barrel roll, performed by stuntman Gary Powell using Vickers 

air mortars attached to the side of the boat.
