Play it safe when boating or swimming this summer. Our reservoirs can be enjoyable 

recreation destinations, but it’s important to practice common sense safety precautions. 

Because the water in our reservoirs is used for flood control and the production of electricity, 

reservoir water levels can rise or fall daily. Changing water levels can conceal submerged 

hazards, particularly in shallow water near the shoreline. Visitors and reservoir users should be 

aware of these potential dangers and take precautions to stay safe. 

Boating, fishing, and swimming above or below a dam or generating station can be very 

dangerous. For your own safety and the safety of those with you, obey all warning signs and 

stay out of restricted areas. Boaters must comply with all Canadian Coast Guard regulations 

and practice safe boating at all times.

Boundary is asking residents 

of Rivervale to be aware 

of watering restrictions. RDKB’s

in Rivervale reduce their water 

consumption and conserve H20 

more effectively this summer. 

“Rivervale Water Service is

water usage and adhere to the water restrictions. This sprinkler 

system assessment can be completed for both manual and 

automatic sprinkler systems. 

Some easy water saving tips for your lawn include, 

1. Water in the early morning or evening 

This is when evaporation from heat and wind is at its lowest; 

because it is cooler and calmer, the water has more time to be 

fully absorbed by the roots of your grass. Afternoon heat can 

evaporate up to 30% of the water from your sprinklers. 

2. Don’t overwater 

Too much is bad when it comes to watering your lawn in the 

heat, if you overwater too much it can lead to fungal diseases, 

weeds, and pests. A lawn only needs an average of 1 inch or 2.5 

cm of water every week. 

3. Maintain your lawn equipment 

If you have a dull blade on your lawn mower, it will tear 

at the grass, which in turn will cause it to use 40-60%, more 

water to recover. Raising the mowing height on your lawn 

mower is also a helpful trick as it helps to shade the soil and 

reduce evaporation.

Josephine (Jo) Blyth McBurney 

(nee Watt), 87 years young, 

passed away peacefully at 

Kootenay Lake Hospital 

in Nelson, BC on May 31, 

2024, with family by her 

side. Jo was predeceased by 

her dear siblings Charles 

and Melinda. She is survived 

by her four children, 

Janet (Mitch), Margot, 

Andrew (Michelle) and 

Joel (Réa), and by beloved 

grandchildren Emma, Aurora, 

Lucy, Théo and Bodhi. 

Jo was born in Ottawa in 

1937 to Charles (Chummy) 

and Aurora Watt. Her childhood 

was happy and full, 

with many adventures on 

Crescent Heights and wonderful 

times at Grand Lake, 

Quebec. She treasured her 

siblings Charles and Melinda, 

and their children; 

Heather, Doug, Jennifer, Ian 

and Peter and Sarah. Jo was 

an incredibly social person, 

with a wide circle of friends 

from Ontario, many of 

whom she remained close 

with all her life. 

Jo adored her kids and was 

their protector, advocate 

and cheerleader. She instilled 

in them a sense of 

fun, curiosity and creativity, 

and in doing so gave them 

the courage to pursue their 

own paths, even if (especially 

if) those paths were 

unconventional. 

After many visits over 

the years to her sons 

in Nelson, she made 

the move out west 

in 1999. Here she 

found her happy 

place. In caring 

for her grandkids 

and many other 

children, she 

affectionately 

became known 

as “Nana Jo”. 

Her love of colour 

and design 

led her to 

start her own 

♥ 

painting company, Word 

of Mouth. Happiest when 

up a ladder, brush dripping 

with paint, she worked on 

dozens of homes in Nelson 

and would often become 

fast friends with her clients. 

Jo was passionate about the 

Stephen Lewis Foundation 

Grans to Grans initiative 

and the dear friends she 

made there. She volunteered 

at the Capitol Theatre 

and was an enthusiastic 

member of the Second 

Wind Choir. In her 80’s 

Mom still loved going to seniors’ 

centres and “singing 

for the old folks!’ 

Jo’s life is an inspiration to 

us all, in that she perfected 

living simply and well. 

There was always a project 

on the go, something to 

bake, a friend to laugh with. 

Endlessly curious and resilient, 

she was determined to 

live her life without complaint, 

regardless of how

much suffering she endured 

in the last few years. Tucked 

in bed with her watercolours 

and YouTube instructional 

videos, she produced 

hundreds of little paintings 

of wacky birds and bright 

florals over the last few 

years. 

Heartfelt thanks to her 

wonderful palliative and 

home support teams, whose 

gentle care allowed mom to 

stay at home and enjoy the 

best quality of life possible. 

To the always patient and 

professional staff at KLH 

(3rd floor and ER), BC Ambulance 

Paramedics, the 

Renal team at KBRH and 

the Shoppers Drug Mart 

Pharmacy staff, a huge 

thank you. As well, the 

counsel and assistance of 

Thompson Funeral Home is 

truly appreciated. 

Thanks also to the many, 

many friends who visited 

regularly. Your presence 

gave mom so much joy. Particular 

gratitude to her ukulele 

playing fairy godmothers, 

Lily Mayall, Sandy Joyce 

and Meg Stewart, for the 

love, laughter and music 

(especially Hotel California!). 

A celebration of 

life will be held on Saturday, 

June 29, from 12-3, at 

mom’s favourite cafe, L&C

Kaslo Shakespeare Festival #3 

The Bard’s wonderful 

music-filled comedy 

of Twelfth Night 

will come to life on the 

Langham Theatre Stage 

late June and early July 

presented by the Kaslo 

Shakespeare Festival 

ensemble. 

In this iconic comedy 

of mistaken identities, 

confusions of love and the eventual ordering of Destiny, the 

theme of what is separate being reunited speaks to the modern 

human soul. Live music (recorder and guitar ensemble) and 

singing are woven throughout the play fulfilling Shakespeare’s 

opening lines “If music be the food of love, play on…” 

This is Kaslo Shakespeare’s third production, having presented 

Mid Summer Night’s Dream (2022) and The Tempest 

(2024) to sold out audiences. 

The play, presented in an abridged form, is directed by 

Wendy Poer leading a cast of local adults and Kaslo area 

youth. Performances will be Friday and Saturday, June 28th 

and 29th at 7:00 pm and Friday and Saturday, July 5th and 6th 

at 7:00 pm at the Langham Theatre (447 A Ave.) in Kaslo. A 

free preview of scenes will be performed at the Front Street 

Park Stage in downtown Kaslo on Saturday June 22nd at 4:00 

pm. Tickets can be purchased at the Eurythmy Studio and 

Bookstore or Sunnyside Naturals in Kaslo. For more info call
