Rabbi Meeka’s Musings
Shalom and warm summer greetings!
As we embrace the warmth and vibrancy of July, we find our
beloved Rabbi on a well-deserved break, basking in the joys of
summer. While the Rabbi may be "out of office," the spirit of
connection and community here at Temple Adas Shalom remains
ever-present.
In her absence, we thought it would be fun to bring a bit of
summer spirit to her usual “Musings”. So, let’s dive into some
lighthearted and uplifting thoughts to keep the positive vibes
flowing while she’s out of office!
Rabbi Meeka's Musings
Continued
Summer Adventures and Spiritual Rejuvenation
If you’re lucky enough to be near a beach or lake, why not organize a
small Shabbat gathering by the water? The beauty of nature can
enhance our prayers and make the experience even more special.
Summer is an excellent time to reconnect with the outdoors. Take a
nature walk with your family and discuss your favorite Torah stories,
and how they parallel the growth and renewal we see all around us
during summer.
Spend a warm summer night stargazing with loved ones, reflecting
on the vastness of the universe and our place within it. Share your
dreams and aspirations, finding comfort in the continuity of the
cosmos.
Bring your family and friends together for a picnic in the park,
followed by a beautiful Havdalah ceremony to mark the end of
Shabbat. Enjoy the simple pleasures of good food, great company,
and meaningful rituals.
Enjoy the sunshine, embrace the warmth, and may this summer bring you endless blessings
and cherished memories.
Shalom,
President's Message
Mark Wolkow
Leadership is something that no
organization can be without.
I have been fortunate to have worked for both great and not-so-great
leaders in my career. I say fortunate, because it has given me the
opportunity to emulate what I consider the best traits of the good ones,
as well as understand … and try to avoid… the consequences of the
others. Having had leadership roles both in my professional life and my
“volunteer life”, it is clear that best practices relate to both. Many things
that I have learned and implemented in my working career have
enhanced my volunteer roles, and vice versa.
So, for anyone considering (or who has not yet considered) taking
on a leadership role at TAS, know that there are significant resources
both within TAS and through the Union for Reform Judaism that will
help you to become the best leader you can be, and those skills will likely
carry over to your day job. Consider it a “twofer”!
We also plan to implement a leadership development program for
future Temple leaders. If you are interested in helping to put this
program together or interested in enrolling as a program participant,
please let me know.
RPC Message
Linda Needel & Mike Mullis
I'm baaacccckkkkk!! (This is Linda writing this) When I stepped down from
RPC Co-chair to take on the position of Co-president I did not think I would
return to RPC Co-chair. The RPC was in great hands with Mark Wolkow and
Melissa Immel and Mike Mullis and Melissa Immel. With Melissa stepping
down, her many years of work have put the RPC in a great position. Thank
you Melissa!!
That being said... RPC needs you. We are a small but
mighty committee. This past month included
Rock Shabbat, Shavuot Shabbat and Pride Shabbat.
We will continue to offer weekly Shabbat services to
engage our community. If you have any ideas for
"Special Shabbatot" please reach out to me or Mike at
RPC@TempleAdasShalom.org.
Also please consider joining RPC. No experience is necessary. Can you send
an email, make a phone call, complete a spreadsheet?? The High Holidays
are fast approaching and RPC is working behind the scenes to start
preparing. If you can volunteer a small portion of your time your Temple
Adas Shalom community will greatly appreciate it.
Let your voice be heard and join our fun, exciting committee. We only meet
via zoom once a month!!!
See you in Shul,
Kehillah MAGNET
Sarah O’Donnell & Ashira Quabili
Shalom Temple Adas Shalom Community!
With summer officially in motion, our Kehillah MAGNET staff
is busily planning, organizing, and preparing for our 2024-
2025 school year. If you know of families with children in
Grades Pre-K through ten who want their children to learn
about their Jewish culture, history, and traditions, please
send them our way to secure their materials!
This July marks our Second Annual Rummage Sale (in recent history), and we are
hoping to earn even more funds for our religious school. This event is a wonderful way
to clear out items from your house, find new treasures that you never knew you needed,
and connect with members of our Harford County community!
Rummage Sale Collection Dates: Saturday, July 6 & Sunday, July 7 (10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Our Rummage Sale event will be held in the TAS social
hall from Friday, July 12 – Sunday, July 14. This sale is
almost pure profit for our school, but we will need much
support (and many donated items) to make it happen. I
am currently seeking volunteers to set up the sale, run the
stands, and bake items. Our baked goods such as challah
and other desserts brought in excellent revenue!
Please click the link below to sign up to help or email Sarah
at principal@templeadasshalom.org. Monetary donations are always welcome as well to
offset the cost of security, food/drinks, and marketing.
Rummage Sale: July 12th (12 pm - 3 pm); July 13th and 14th (8 am - 12 pm)
Sisterhood News
Deborah Temple
It has been an eventful Sisterhood month! Pat planned a fantastic End-of-Year event
including a delicious lunch at JD’s Smokehouse and an incredibly interesting
afternoon at Tudor Hall. Did you know that John Wilkes Booth’s father, Junius, was
the most famous Shakespearean actor in the first half of the 19th century? And his
brother held the same honor for the second half of the century? Or that Junius had
two families on two different continents at the same time for which he was
blackmailed by his own sister? These shenanigans were worthy of a reality television
show, if only there had been TV.
Sisterhood
Events
All our Sisterhood dates are
posted on the Temple Calendar
and appear in bright pink.
The following weekend we joined the TAS board for our Congregational Meeting
where we proudly shared our Sisterhood successes. This year (July 2023 – Jun 2024),
we created our first strategic plan and nailed it reaching 95% of our goals. We
increased our membership by 10% and our fundraising by 14%. We finished the year
in the black, and we happily invested much of our funds back to TAS. A sampling of
those goods and services donations include: the new social hall tables, the entire
year of pantry supplies, paying to kasher the kitchen, and purchasing lunches for
temple trainings. In addition, much of our cash donations went to Kehillat MAGNET
and directly to temple member camperships. Every month this past year, our
Sisterhood members have chosen to make our Sisterhood a priority. We have come
together every single month strengthening our bonds and supporting one another.
So naturally, you want to know how you can get involved in the TAS Sisterhood, too!
It’s really simple, if you support the missions of Reform Judaism and Temple Adas
Shalom, and identify as a woman, we would love to have you join us – just send an
email to TASSisterhood@TempleAdasShalom.org to let us know. Whether your idea
of Sisterhood is playing mahjong and donating to Jewish charities, creating artwork
and feeding the poor, throwing axes and marching for women’s rights, or just
attending some really great events (or you could be like us and want to it all), this is
the place for you! We are a diverse and welcoming group of women committed to
being more than the conventional, because afterall,
Wishing you a happy and well air-conditioned July,
Safety & Security
Pat Wolkow
Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but safety should always
come first. Enjoy your adventures and celebrations with some helpful
tips to ensure a safe and happy summer season.
CHECK OUT THE
NEW EVENT FORM!
Sunscreen: Always apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Reapply every
two hours, or more often if you're swimming or sweating.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can sneak up on you,
especially in the hot summer months.
Shade: Seek shade during the peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM) to avoid overexposure.
Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can also help protect you from harmful UV
rays.
Swimming: Always swim with a buddy and ensure that children are supervised by an adult
at all times. Knowing basic water rescue techniques can be life-saving.
Boating: Wear a life jacket whenever you're on a boat, even if you are a strong swimmer.
Make sure your boat is equipped with essential safety gear such as flares, a first aid kit, and
a fire extinguisher.
Rip Currents: If caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to the shore until
you are out of the current, then swim back to land.
Heat Exhaustion: Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion, which include heavy sweating,
weakness, and dizziness. If you or someone else shows these symptoms, move to a cooler
place, drink water, and rest.
Pets: Never leave pets in a parked car, even with the windows cracked. On a warm day,
temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels.
Happy 4th to all! Stay safe in your travels and celebrations! Look for
