H aving worked as a mortgage adviser for nearly 30 years, with 10 years specialising in Equity Release, Sarah Ferrell, local adviser, has seen a significant amount of change. “We are living longer, and this often means people need mortgage finance to an older age”. Compared with previous generations reaching retirement age, there are considerably fewer people retiring at age 60, on a final salary pension, and with no debt. That just isn’t the profile of today’s retiring population. A more typical scenario is that at age 60/65, many people are still working, still have a mortgage and have also potentially used their savings to either help family or, more recently, to financially survive COVID and now to cover the increasing cost of living. Much advertising about Equity Release focuses on how much you can release, however, Sarah prefers to focus on WHY somebody is considering this route of finance and whether it is, (or ultimately is not), the right solution for their individual situation. Providing financial advice is not just about the numbers. It is undoubtedly extremely important that a recommendation makes financial sense, but it is also fundamental to any recommendation to understand WHY somebody is in the financial position they are in, and what their plans for the future are.
