The ONBOARD team are delighted to present edition
number seven of our annual Tenders & Toys Guide.
The industry continues to steam ahead with the
help of new entrants into the market and a new
set of demographics of owners and in general, the
population’s desire to re-connect with nature and
the oceans.
Supply chains as with any other industry are
still an everyday inconvenience, but the industry
has adapted and is forging ahead with its usual
professionalism and gusto.
Protecting the ocean and sustainability is
deservedly getting more headlines and the yacht
shows throughout the year are giving more space
and time to those companies involved in protecting
these precious eco-systems. But as ever, there is
still a long way to go and we all need to join forces
and join these initiatives - less talk and more action
is needed.
The yacht’s themselves are carrying a wider
selection of tenders and toys and the larger chase
/ adventure tenders are seeing a surge with the
younger owners looking for more independence to
explore the incredible regions they are visiting.

Ed Hill discusses why security training
for yacht crew is paramount for
cohesive yacht operations and to build
a strong team onboard that will benefit
the owner and guests onboard
With crime consistently dominating current headlines,
it’s easy to understand why security is high on the
agenda for most organisations.
Today’s security threat is more serious than ever and yachts are
certainly not immune. Many yachts mistakenly feel that on-board
security is only a requirement when cruising through the Gulf of
Aden. However, further investigation will reveal that maritime
piracy is now far more prevalent in other parts of the world.
A string of recent events involving violent attacks on yachts in
the Caribbean and Southeast Asia illustrate that yachts must
remain guarded in even the most tranquil areas.
Furthermore, other threats to security have now emerged with the
potential dangers posed by drones and a cyber breach presenting
a different type of challenge. These threats may appear to be
more discreet nevertheless if left unprotected their impact can
be devastating.
There is no mistaking that glamorous yachts will continuously
attract attention for their association with ostentatious wealth.
The presence of expensive artwork, jewellery and cash, not to
mention the safety and security of owners, their guests and
families increase the need for tightened security. However, the
increasing crime rate coupled with decreasing police resources
proves that yachts are vulnerable and a lack of on-board security
awareness amongst the crew exacerbates that vulnerability.
The International Maritime Organisation became concerned of
the general lack of security awareness throughout the entire
maritime industry and introduced mandatory security courses
as part of the basic STCW training package for all seafarers.
Although this move is to be commended, the course content
only covers the basic minimal security skills and this renders the
value of these courses as somewhat questionable.
For those yachts that comply with the International Ship and
Port Security (ISPS) Code, a mandatory requirement is that
crew security training must be conducted every three months.
This training is typically conducted in-house by the on-board
Ship Security Officer. However, the busy work routine of most
yachts means that minimal time is afforded to this training.
Consequently, security training often gets neglected, it can be
unimaginative and often viewed as a tedious chore.
However, proper investment in crew training can and will reap
the benefits. A driving factor behind crew engagement is training
and development. Studies in business have discovered that those
companies that invest in meaningful training for their personnel
perform considerably better than those that don’t. Investment in
staff training brings a number of benefits to both the individuals
and the organisation as a whole.
Some of the more obvious benefits of training will give the crew a
greater understanding of their responsibilities, build confidence,
encourage teamwork, develop common working practices and
strengthen internal relationships. Ultimately, this increases morale
and improves the overall performance of the yacht.
A crew that is well trained can give the yacht a genuine competitive
advantage over other yachts, particularly if the yacht is being
used for charter. Furthermore, an employer that demonstrates

a commitment to staff development will help a yacht retain its
best individuals and makes the yacht more attractive when it
comes to recruiting top talent.
On the matter of security, it’s clearly advantageous to have
a crew that are well drilled and diligent. This acts as a visual
deterrent that sends a potential intruder elsewhere in search of
an easier target. Conversely, any yacht that displays a lethargic
attitude towards security is openly inviting intruders on board.
One way of enhancing the crew’s security capability is to bring
in an outside trainer. The utilisation of external expert security
advice can significantly improve the quality of the training by
imparting their experience and introducing fresh ideas. Training can
be delivered to an advanced level that involves realistic exercise
scenarios that considerably sharpens the crew’s alertness and
ability to respond to an incident.

Training can be tailored to a yacht’s specific security needs.
For example, if a yacht is heading to a region where there are
concerns for piracy, the crew can be trained to prepare for
that specific threat. Perhaps more importantly, the crew can
be reminded of the importance of routine security awareness
such as the potential consequences of opening an unscrupulous
email attachment or posting a seemingly innocent photograph
on social media.
Some yacht owners have even requested their crew to be
trained in unarmed combat techniques. This will give the crew
the confidence to tackle and restrain an individual that has
become aggressive and violent.
An excellent way of highlighting a yacht’s security shortfalls
is by penetration testing. Unbeknown to the crew, an external
organisation will conduct surveillance of the yacht to assess
weaknesses. At a moment of their choosing, the surveillance
team will board the yacht to see how far they can get without
being challenged. When finished, the whole crew will be debriefed
on areas that need addressing.
A number of high profile security breaches involving superyachts
prove that security must be taken seriously by everyone on
board. Criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated and a
superyacht with all of its opulence presents a perfect target.
A well-trained crew combined with a robust on-board security
culture goes a long way in reducing that threat.
Instead of being viewed as a laborious box-ticking exercise, crew
security training should be seen as a worthwhile and necessary
investment.

Insurers require captains to make regular observations of the
towed tender from the yacht, but the challenge is that remote
observations will only provide incomplete safety information
about the tender, for example: whether the tender is there, and
the stability of its surfing and yawing motion.
Global insurance companies are insisting on additional monitoring
with an Advanced Tow Protection System if a superyacht wishes
to have cover whilst towing a tender at night or beyond a certain
distance offshore.
A TowPro system will alert the bridge to common problems
before they result in loss or damage. However, should a tow
rope break and the tender is beyond a certain distance from the
yacht, three things happen:
1. An alarm is sounded in the bridge of the Mothership.
2. The TowPro Tender Unit turns into a Class B AIS, broadcasting
a NUC message, which can be seen on the Mothership’s ECDIS.
3. The TowPro Tender Unit sends an alert and position to the
cloud via an in-built Iridium Modem – this is used to locate
the adrift tender if out of AIS range.
With three distinct communication methods the system offers
multiple way of alerting the bridge in case of a tow break or
even theft.

bridge procedures and the watch keepers.
As Imme Schmidts, Managing Director of the Pantaenius Palma
office, explains, “This latest advance in tow protection has enabled
us to offer alternative wording in the towing of tender clause,
allowing towing for longer distances and at night.”
This level of insight and monitoring during a tow is extremely
reassuring for captains and crew. “Running with a tow is very
stressful from a captain and crew’s point of view,” comments
Captain Roger Weston of M/Y Alicia. “The chase boat is our main
form of transport for the guests and a key part of our operation
– if we were to lose it on passage it could potentially shut down
a charter. To have ‘eyes on board’ an unmanned craft that is
being towed behind us is a huge benefit to bridge procedures
and the watch keepers. Having the ability to know in advance of
some form of issue enables us to come away from the passage
plan, seek shelter and assess the situation.”
The TowPro Bridge Display can easily be integrated within an
existing superyacht bridge requiring only 12/24V power and
an existing VHF feed. There is no need for expensive/disruptive
installation of aesthetically displeasing additional antennas on
the mothership.
TSM Systems’ newest product is undergoing final trials. TowPro-
Fleet Manager is a further evolution of TowPro. It monitors
multiple craft including up to three tenders and other items
such as jet skis and life jackets. The tenders will have full 2-way
communication via VHF and Iridium, thus each tender can stay in
contact with the mothership irrespective of range and tradition
4/5G coverage. This system will be on sale in Q3 of 2023.

As electric superyacht tenders become ever more
popular, Frances and Michael Howorth look into the
market and find out why the trend is charging ahead
With yacht owners seeking sustainable and
supportable solutions to satisfy their sailing
aspirations, the business of building electric
superyacht tenders is all charged up and rapidly
evolving. The development behind this trend, is being driven by
technical innovation, advances in battery technology, electric
motor improvement, and charging infrastructure.
One of the key technical developments that has enabled the
rise of electric superyacht tenders is the development of high
capacity batteries. Lithium-ion batteries have emerged as the
leading technology for powering electric boats due to their high
energy density, low weight, and long life. These batteries can
store large amounts of energy in a relatively small space, making
them well-suited for use in electric superyacht tenders.
It is the emergence of these high capacity Li-ion batteries that
is opening up the marketplace. The use of lithium-ion batteries in
electric superyacht tenders has also been facilitated by advances
in charging infrastructure. Many marinas and ports now offer
electric charging facilities, allowing yacht owners to recharge
their tender’s batteries while they are docked. This trend is
growing fast in many countries around the Mediterranean and one
company in particular driving this forward is Aqua superPower. In
addition, portable charging units have become increasingly popular,
enabling yacht owners to recharge their electric superyacht
tenders while at anchor or on remote beaches.
“The competitive advantage of our Wave e-550 is that you can
plug it on any plug (16A or 32A),” Marion Vitrat from Magonis
Electric Boats says. Marion continues, “From 0 to 100%, with
a 32A plug, you will have your boat charged within 5 hours. With
a 16A, you will need 10 hours. Shortly, the Wave will be able to
use fast chargers, and charge the boat in less than 1 hour.”

Today, most marinas and many smaller harbours offer charging
possibilities. “The C-8 from Candela can be charged using any
three phase outlet, and that is available in most Mediterranean
marinas,” says Max Carlgren. Most commonly, a standard outlet
charging is used to charge small boats, but increasingly harbours
are offering fast charging from dedicated charging stations.
“You can charge an X Shore boat with a three-phase socket,
says Connor Batty. “The availability of fast chargers along the
coast and in the archipelago is still quite limited, but as more
electric boats enter the market, the electrical infrastructure
at sea will grow as well. As X Shore expands its connections
with marinas, harbours, and charging station manufacturers
and operators, we hope to further expand the availability of fast
charging across the globe.”
The RS Marine Pulse can be charged using both CCS fast-changing
(Aqua superPower) and standard pontoon 16amp power. “By the
end of 2023, the Mediterranean will be very well covered for both
slow and fast charging,” says Paddy James.

In Spain, Luis Ponce from Lasai says, “In Europe the law is
pushing in the direction we have chosen: sustainable recreational
boating. The industry is becoming more and more aware that
the future is going in this direction. As a consequence, there
are more and more super chargers. Marinas are a service and
tend to meet the demand in advance. In this sense we do not
see difficulties but allies.”
Another key technical development in the field of electric superyacht
tenders has been the development of high-performance electric
motors. Electric motors have several advantages over traditional
internal combustion engines, including lower noise levels, reduced
vibration, and higher torque at low speeds.
SELLING OR NOT?
Perhaps because the technology is so new there is a reluctance
amongst manufacturers to shout about their successes. There
is strong evidence to suggest that tenders are being purchased
for superyacht use but it is very difficult to pinpoint who has
bought them and where they are being used.
Charles Hall from Pixii tells us, “We have received strong interest

CANDELA
The electric Candela C-8 tender offers unrivalled

The same story is emerging from Candela in Sweden, where Max
Carlgren, says, “We have sold boats to superyacht owners,
but we have agreed with them, not to disclose who they are.”
Connor Batty at XShore says, “We do not reveal the companies or
captains that have bought our boats for confidentiality reasons.
But the X Shore 1 is an ideal tender boat for superyachts. Its
design is modular - fitting easily on board boats and in garages.
What’s more, with a converter, it is easy to charge the X Shore
1 whilst using the tender alongside your superyacht.”
In the UK Paddy James of RS Marine says, “We are due to
deliver boats to superyachts in 2025, I’m afraid all projects are
covered by NDAs.” “It is still too early for us to get into the
superyacht market,” says Luis Ponce from Lasai, “But I can
say that we met a lot of yachtsmen who came to see us at the
Düsseldorf Boat Show. They know that sustainable recreational
boating is the future!”
In addition to these advantages, electric motors are also more
efficient than internal combustion engines, converting a higher
percentage of the energy stored in the battery into propulsive
power. This means that electric superyacht tenders can travel
further and faster on a single charge than their internal combustion
counterparts.
The development of high performance electric motors has also
enabled the production of electric superyacht tenders that can
reach high speeds. While early electric boats were limited to
low speeds, modern electric motors can produce high levels of
power, allowing electric superyacht tenders to reach speeds of
up to 40 knots or more.
UNIQUE SELLING POINTS
As more electric tenders come to the market it is inevitable that
some will have features that others do not. Sorting out which to
buy is going to be difficult but it pays to match what you expect
from a tender against what the market is currently offering. It
should go without saying that all fully electric tenders should be
soundless in operation and emission free when underway while
incurring minimal impact on marine life.
VIKAL

Connor Batty introduces pricing as a USP pointing out
that X Shore boats are around a third of the price of
other electric boats on the market. For Paddy James
it is the stylish and modern bespoke deck layouts and
designs of the Pulse 63 RIBs that are the tenders
outstanding feature. Luis Ponce on the other hand
insists that it is the ability to charge Lasai boats
using solar panels installed on the boat’s hard top
that makes his boats top of the list. He says, “The
energy captured from the sun is able to propel the
boat with discharged batteries. At the same time it
is a source that constantly replenishes the batteries
so if you need to plug the boat in the harbour it will
not take much time.”
Despite these advances, there are still some challenges
facing the development of electric superyacht tenders.
One of the key challenges is range anxiety, or the fear of running
out of power before reaching a charging point. While advances in
battery technology have greatly increased the range of electric
superyacht tenders, there is still a need for improved battery
technology and charging infrastructure to fully address this issue.
BANG IN THE BATTERIES
Batteries, their design, and installation are all critical when it
comes to building the perfect electric tender. They are perhaps
the most challenging aspects of construction.
Charles Hall agrees saying, “The most challenging aspect is
ensuring that they are properly integrated into the boat’s
structure while also maximising their capacity and efficiency. This
requires careful planning and coordination between our design and
engineering teams. Connor Batty has a contrary argument. He
says, “X Shore does not see design and fitting in the batteries
as a challenge, but as an opportunity. X Shore’s batteries have
the same weight consistently, unlike in fossil fuel-driven boats,
where the weight changes as the fuel burns. For this reason,
the fitting of our batteries has been easy.”
“The most difficult part is building the flight controller computer
that keeps the boat steady at all conditions. It took several years
of coding and testing, but since 2019 we have been delivering
electric hydrofoils globally, to the EU, US, Middle East and New
Zealand,” says Candela’s Max Carlgren. He adds, “ Fitting the
batteries is just a matter of placing them low in the hull to keep
the centre of gravity low and above the main front foil.”
Ensuring that you keep the centre of the mass low is key says
Paddy James at the RS Marine Group. He adds, “We make sure
the weight of the batteries is distributed well across the length
of the hull.”
Another challenge facing the development of electric superyacht
tenders is the higher initial cost compared to traditional internal
combustion engine tenders. While the total cost of ownership
over the life of an electric superyacht tender is often lower due
to lower fuel and maintenance costs, the higher upfront cost
can be a barrier for some yacht owners.
Despite these challenges, the market for electric superyacht
tenders is growing rapidly as more yacht owners seek sustainable
and environmentally friendly solutions to their boating needs. In
addition to the environmental benefits of electric superyacht
tenders, they also offer several other advantages, including lower
noise levels, reduced vibration, and improved manoeuvrability.

AND NEXT?
We asked our panel of experts to look into their crystal balls and
tell us where we might be in say five year’s time asking them
what they thought the next big move for batteries and power
storage might be. Speaking on behalf of X Shore, Connor Batty
thought, “Power storage needs are likely to grow as intermittent
energy sources such as wind and solar become a larger share
of the energy mix. The power storage ecosystem and business
model are yet to become fully developed and I believe that a lot
will be shaped in the next few years. Ask yourself,” he said, “Will
this be integrated into ‘power as a service’ models by energy
suppliers? How can private cars and boats be integrated into the
system? What will the usage of second life batteries be like?” He
added, “I believe on the battery side, new materials are likely to
be explored and identified in the coming years, which will enable
us to find more efficient and modular solutions in this area.”
But he warned, “Self-sufficiency in the EU and North America
are political questions that are likely to move up on the agenda.”
Charles Hall believes, “The next big move for batteries and power
storage is the development of more advanced and efficient battery
technologies. We are closely monitoring developments in this area
and are committed to incorporating the latest advancements
into our boats.”
Marion Vitrat at Magonis Electric Boats thinks the next big thing
will be, “Fast charging available in the next few weeks to charge
the boat in less than 1 hour.” Max Carlgren of Candela in Sweden
has similar thoughts saying, “Since we have an extremely energy
efficient boat, we can get good range on small batteries. This
also gives the benefit of faster charging compared to boats with
very large battery packs. That said, we expect battery capacity
to increase, and the C-8 battery is easily accessed if you want
to upgrade to a higher capacity battery in the future. We are
quite confident that the networks of charge stations will grow.”

HULL OF A DESIGN
Clement David, Senior Naval Architect of Navia Design talks to
ONBOARD about his industry changing stepped hull designs for
superyacht tenders and world renowned marine vessels
Which kind of boat and hull needs a stepped hull?
The benefits of stepped-hull designs kick
in from speeds of 15knots upwards, so all
planing boats can benefit from a stepped
hull design. The final design will be slightly
different according to the required brief.
In other words, it can be optimised either
for a high top speed, or for being more
fuel-efficient at cruising speeds.
What are the benefits?
The primary benefit is a reduction of drag due
to a reduction of the wetted area. Stepped
hulls have a better lift coefficient coming
from the multiplication of the stagnation
lines (the area of high pressure at the start
of the planning area), this reduction of drag
allows for higher top speed and smaller
engines/ meaning better fuel consumption.
A good example would be the Axopar
37, which offers a good performance /
fuel consumption compromise from one,
or max two engines, whereupon it’s not
unusual to see similar length boats in the
USA, for example, with three or even four
outboard engines, although with marginal
performance gain.
Are comfort or stability at anchor compromised
with this kind of hull?
Step hull designs allow more freedom in terms
of design. We can choose the width/beam
at the waterline, while keeping efficiency,
that still allows us to tweak its behavior at
anchor. A hull that is too wide, for example,
is stable in low height waves at anchor, but
as soon as the wave height increases it
becomes more uncomfortable and moves
(rolls) very fast. If the hull beam is too narrow
then the motion at anchor is slower, but
it will still react to any waves. For better
seakeeping ability a narrow beam is better.
Does the difference between one or two steps
depend on the length of the boat?
Yes, it depends on the length, but also
width at the waterline, displacement and
location of centre of gravity. All four design
parameters influence the number of steps.
A good design is about getting all four of
these parameters correct at the same time!
What is the smallest boat length that can have
a stepped hull?
One of the drawbacks of a stepped hull is a
small increase of weight and, most importantly,
it requires a more complex construction.

These weight increases can be significant for
a small boat, but less so for a larger boat.
For a serial production boat, we could start
from 5m length upwards, but for a custom
made, light displacement boat using unique
weight saving materials in its construction,
we could start from 3m upwards.
Are there any differences between a RIB boat
and normal boat?
There are ‘pluses and minuses’ between RIBs
and normal boats, which can be compared
and contrasted across both construction
and stability.
HULL 1
Construction: Tubes are lighter than GRP, but
it is difficult to integrate features such as
handrails, cleats, cupholders etc on tubes.
More importantly, the width of the tubes
greatly reduce the available space on deck.
Stability: GRP hulls provide good stability
and the rules are equally favorable for
RIBs. An Axopar, for example, is designed
like a RIB, with the second step not used
when planing, but becoming really useful
for stability.
From a planing point of view, there is no
difference since the design of the hull is
independent of whether it’s a RIB or not
a RIB.
HULL 2
RIBs benefit from being light and easy to
transport, and have high people carrying
capacity, but there is limited space for
equipment on deck. The tube is like an
empty space which we cannot use which
can impact greatly on available deck space.
What are the disadvantages or contradictions?
The disadvantages of a stepped hull design
are that it is more complex in terms of design
and there’s a higher risk of getting it wrong!
It’s a more complex construction as well,
and there is a small weight penalty and at
really low speeds (

With more development will it be possible to go
under a 5m boat?
Yes, it is possible for sure. But as discussed
before, there is an increase in weight and
therefore construction is more complicated,
so there is a decision for the buyer to make
first.
It depends on the length, but also width at the
waterline, displacement and location of centre of
gravity. All four design parameters influence the number
of steps the vessel should have.
Which technology do you use to design this kind of
hull? How does augmented reality help you in this?
The basic design parameters of a stepped
hull come together from a variety of sources
that includes our own in-house software
(Savitsky, wake simulation...), which uses
literature that gives us a good idea of the
basic step position and parameters in a very
short space of time.
After that, we use CFD (Computational Fluid
Dynamic) software to fine tune the steps and
to confirm the precise position of the spray
rails in order to maximise the final design.
Volume of fluid CFD allows us to track the
different free surface (limit between the water
the air) and then have an accurate picture
of the air/water mix and spray. After this,
we use Virtual Reality for accommodation
layout and fittings.
Is it true that a stepped hull is more expensive to
be built? Or does it depend upon the mold?
In serial production GRP, yes the cost to
build is more expensive than a normal hull,
but the difference is relatively marginal and
it’s still a very workable possibility. In the
case of metal or wooden hull construction,
the extra cost for a stepped hull production
would be quite significantly higher than a
normal hull design.
This kind of hull has a peculiar shape, correct? Do
you think that you will use 3D technology in the
next few years, maybe to build the mold?
We already use 3D modelisation and CNC
milling but, currently, we don’t use 3D printing
for the global boat as the material is not
as efficient as GRP, but Navia is constantly
looking out for the next best opportunities
to recommend to our clients.
We do, however, use 3D printing for
prototyping of small components and for
mock-ups of certain areas such as cabin
spaces and helm areas, steering consoles
and such like.
When we designed the new Axopar 22, for
example, we used 3D printing for creating
prototypes of all the knobs and switches
placed on the dashboard.

Tenders are getting larger, faster and we’re
seeing even the most luxurious tenders
packing a serious line up of outboard
motors hanging off the back. Owners and
charter guests are demanding more from these
tenders in terms of action and speed. But with
this speed and navigation through rougher seas,
the passengers onboard need some protection in
terms of ergonomic and shock resistant seating.
Navies, coast guards, and marine police forces
have been implementing shock-mitigation
technology to protect their human assets for
many years. These agencies recognise that the
crew needs to be protected.
So, although the superyacht tender seats still
need to have that luxury look and feel, the
real important parts are underneath the seat
itself. At its core, shock-mitigating safety gear
consists of an interface or medium between
an input surface, such as a boat’s deck, and
a person seeking to reduce their exposure.
When all goes well, an impact is reduced as
it passes through the medium, resulting in a
gentler motion for the occupant. The reduction is
achieved by means of energy absorption during
compression and deformation of the medium.
If it functions correctly, the seat will return to
its equilibrium position, having reduced some
relevant measure of acceleration as it resets for
the next impact.
Shock mitigation is crucial to ensure the long
term health and safety of the crew and this
technology will also give the passengers a more
comfortable ride.

and toys can be made easier without cluttering up the decks
The hectic demands of charter schedules and
owners’ visits mean there is more than enough
for crews to think about without worrying about
deck fittings and jet ski attachments. You simply want
to know you can trust them to be secure and that
they will work well, be easy to operate and look good.
It also helps if these fittings are easy to remove, or
sit flush, so that guests can enjoy a clear deck for
bathing and water sports.
The Rapid Marine team have been working hard to
develop innovative products that perfectly meet these
needs. By working closely with jet ski and tender
manufacturers, yacht builders and crew, we understand
the specific requirements of superyacht use. This
lead the team to create the DAME Award-nominated
padeyes and self-adjusting universal chocks, as well
as our four-point rapid lift and recovery system for
jet skis.
CHOCKS AWAY! THE UNIVERSAL SOLUTION
We realised tenders rarely sat on their cradles correctly
and hydraulic platforms were becoming the norm.
Starting with a clean sheet, we took a long, hard
look at the requirements for an off-the-shelf universal
product and 18 months later we launched our DAME
nominated solution – Rapid Marine’s Universal Chocks.
Complementing the clean aesthetics of high-end
superyachts, these self-adjusting chocks are hand
crafted in iroko with integrated, cushioned support
pads made of non-marking, non-slip thermoplastic
elastomer (ETP). Able to support any tender or jet ski
up to 1000kg in weight, they can be supplied with a
selection of different flush and low profile padeyes to
secure ratcheting lashing straps. With a simple push
to fit attachment system, the chocks are designed
to remain in place when submerged yet are easily
removed. All chocks come with a transparent fitting
template and drill bits, with router jigs available.
PAINLESS PADEYES
Gone are the days of kicking or tripping over traditional
eyebolt padeyes. The DAME nominated Rapid Padeyes
leave the bathing platform clear once the tender has
been launched. There are three different options: flush,
caulk-lined flush and low profile, for GRP decks when
routing is not an option.
Manufactured from corrosion resistant stainless 316,
and with a weather tight, spring loaded mechanism,
the padeyes are designed to be retrofitted to decks
or bathing platforms. The padeyes have a snap toggle
with a pivoting head which, once inserted into the deck,
produces a backing plate that cannot be pulled out.

strap, is inserted into a retaining slot and
rotated 90 degrees to secure before ratcheting.
To remove, simply release the strap tension,
push down, rotate and lift.
LIGHTEN THE LOAD OF LIFTING PWCS
Traditional hook harness systems have been
prone to misuse, leading to slippage and potential
damage. To create a more secure, well balanced
system and easy to use system, we’ve developed
brand specific kits for Sea-Doo, Yamaha and
Kawasaki. Attaching the Rapid Marine lifting sling
is quick and straightforward using permanently
fitted jet ski brackets, with a simple insert and
turn keyway system, while the sling strops are
strong and fully adjustable. Naturally, each kit

When the kids crashed the e-foil? Luckily all that’s ancient
history. The boss has upgraded the boat.
What do you mean? I saw you guys coming in earlier and she looks the
same as ever.
You saw me coming in and anchoring, sure. But did you see
the boat that slipped in just ahead of us? The one that’s lying
over there?
The cool looking mini explorer? Do you know who they are?
‘They’ are us. That’s the new boat – a YXT27 from Lynx. The
first rate Dutch shipyard with a difference: state-of-the-art
facilities and some really fresh new ideas. YXT stands for ‘Yacht
Extender’ and that’s just what the new boat does. It’s like adding
20 metres of extra length to the mothership.
So you’ve got a support vessel now? You’re in charge of a fleet?!
Not support – it’s more like a shadow. Jump into the limo and
we’ll buzz over for a look at the YXT. I’ve just dropped our guests
off for lunch – I can spare a couple of minutes.
I’ve got to say, this limo is bit of an upgrade on that old RIB that flipped
in the surf at Cala Mesquida last year.
Isn’t it just. The boss has had her eye on one of these semicustom
ones for ages, but there was no way we could fit it into
the garage on the mothership – 5m was the maximum there
and really limited headroom. No real chance of getting anything
large enough for the boos and guests.
What is it – seven metres long? Eight?
It’s just shy of 9m, and does 40 knots flat out! You see,
the long aft deck of the YXT27 means we can easily stow
and carry a bigger tender. The boss loves it, and so do the
guests we’ve had on charter this year. When they go ashore
for dinner, they can get all glammed up and still step onto
the quay without a hair out of place. It’s a game changer for
us – you should see the reviews! Here, put a turn around that
cleat there, would you?
Do my eyes deceive me, or are you really carrying a Series III Land
Rover tied down to the deck?
The very same - repainted to match the YXT and the mothership.
Look at the hull, here – it’s exactly the same shade of Alexseal
as the big boat, and the fairing is flawless. Check out the
distortion-free reflection!
And there was me thinking that support vessels were all chunky welds
and bare deck. This looks like a mini superyacht!
Shadow boat, not support vessel! And that’s what makes Lynx
Yachts special – they’re built to the same standard as the
main yacht. The concept is for a totally flexible platform, not
simply a steel box for storing the toys. That means you can
put guest facilities on board – we’ve got two double cabins,
a gym and a sauna with an ice shower below deck. And the
main saloon here is fitted out with sofas and a big screen for
watching movies or reviewing the day’s footage. The boss’s
kids love using the drone when they’re out on the kitesurf or
wakeboarding.
The thing is, with a beam of 7m, there’s so much space to play
with. The YXT27 adds an extra 110 gross tons to our carrying
capabilities and Lynx are able to customise just about every
element of the layout. You can put extra crew accommodation
to relieve pressure on the big boat, or for visiting guides,
we’ve actually got a kitboard instructor with us this week.

The Crossover 27 offers the best of both worlds
Nice! But I’m not sure it would work for my boss. He’s looking to switch
up to a 70m yacht so he can fit a submersible and a beach lander on board.
Lynx builds bigger models too, you know. The boss went for the
YXT27, but they do a 34m, a 36m and even a 40m. It just depends
what you need. We looked round a YXT34, in fact, and it actually
had a Triton three person sub on the deck at the time. Sure, it
weighs 4 tonnes, but the crane on board can handle up to 7.5
tonnes, so it’s well within reach. And with the 20m aft deck,
you’d have no trouble getting a 40ft Cigarette Boat on there if
you wanted – plus dive kit, quad bikes and all the rest. Take a look
inside the beach club here – it’s a gym and a toy storage centre.
I dream of having all our boards arranged as neatly as this, but we simply
don’t have the space. What’s the pricetag on one of these things?
Quality doesn’t come cheap, of course, but it’s all relative. To
sell the big boat and buy a bigger one, you’re looking at hefty
fees for the broker, legal and owner’s reps. These alone probably
amount to more than the price of a brand new Lynx, never mind
the extra cost of the bigger boat itself, and the time it would all
take. It’s far less hassle to build a shadow boat, and it would be
customised to suit your boss.
Makes sense...
The other thing we’ve noticed about having the Lynx as a shadow
is the flexibility. We can get the mothership under way at short
notice, leaving the Lynx behind to load and stow the tenders and
toys. And by the time we’ve reached our next port of call, the
Lynx is already there, ready to deploy again. It’s much quicker
and easier to use the crane on the shadow than it ever was
extracting boats from the tender garage of the mothership, so
the boss and her guests can get out on the water almost as
soon as we’ve dropped anchor.
There’s another benefit, too. The Lynx only draws 2.5m, which
means we can creep right into shallow bays where the big boat
wouldn’t be safe. We did some anchorages in the Maddalena
islands in the spring. The kids brought a couple of friends on the
Lynx, while the boss stayed tucked up in Porto Cervo. Later in
the summer they want to go kite surfing in Arcachon. It’s barely
4m over the bar at the entrance, so we’ll have to go in the Lynx,
leaving the big boat in the Gironde, where the boss can go and
taste grands crus in Pauillac.
What’s the range like? The boss is keen on exploring Patagonia in the yacht.
This one has 14,000 litres of diesel tankage, so we’ve got a
range of 1,400 nautical miles at 10 knots. But the Crossover
version of the 27...
Think I saw that at Cannes last autumn – the one with all those jetskis
stored on the wheelhouse roof?
That’s the one! Well, the Crossover 27 is a hybrid between Lynx’s
YXT and Adventure lines, and it can do about 3,000 miles between
bunkering. It’s all just a question of tankage. With these boats
being so flexible, you could easily get some extra fuel capacity
dropped in to increase the range. The Crossover offers a bit
more interior space, but still the massive carrying capacity of the
other lines. Apparently, it’s finding favour with owners who want
a smaller yacht and incredible functionality – they’re speccing
it as an owner boat.
Talking of owners, I must be getting back. The boss wants to go wakeboarding
after lunch, so we’ve got to juggle the tenders round in the garage.
Say no more – I remember those days! Remember, Lynx Yachts,

Exploration of hydrospace, the term used to describe
regions under the surface of our oceans, is as
important, fascinating and rewarding as learning
about, and one day traveling to, other planets in
outer space. While there are many technologies
that allow us to investigate the depths of our oceans, none
are more precious and valuable than direct human access via
manned submersibles. SEAmagine Hydrospace Corporation, the
original submersible manufacturing company that introduced
modern manned subs to the marine sector in the mid-90s,

It is important to understand that humanity has for many
decades spent considerably more attention and budgets on
discovering outer space than on our planet’s hydrospace, yet
it is bewildering how little we actually know of what exists in
our oceans. Generally speaking, university researchers and
scientists have a solid understanding of the top 100 metre
layer of the seas, but anything deeper than that and our
knowledge is as dim as the deep seas themselves, and mostly

In the entire world, less than 200 non-military manned
submersibles are in operation. This includes all governmental
subs, scientific subs, tourism subs and subs in the yachting
sector. Of these, only approximately 65 manned subs worldwide
can reach depths greater than 450 metres. Knowing this, it
cannot be overstated how unique, precious and fantastic it
must be for a private yacht to have a modern submersible, like
those built by SEAmagine on board. A yacht with a submersible
is an incredible combination that gives owners the ability to
reach never seen underwater sceneries, to discover shipwrecks
and to observe rare sea life in its natural deep habitat, while

To share one recent example of citizen science, the crew
aboard the SHADOWCAT support yacht M.Y. HODOR, (which
carries a SEAmagine three-person Aurora submersible depthrated
to 1,000 metres), made a scientific discovery during
a routine training dive in French Polynesia. During one of the
dives off the coast of Moorea Island, the crew aboard the
SEAmagine sub observed a large 4.5 metre long prickly shark
at a depth of 500 metres. Their discovery was the first ever
recorded sighting of the rare species in French Polynesia.
As a result, record of this scientific find is now published in
Cybium, The International Journal of Ichthyology. This discovery
represents a perfect example of the multi-dimensional value
that a submersible brings to a private yacht. A submersible not
only provides a yacht owner the opportunity for incredible new
experiences, but it also empowers the yacht’s participation
in the citizen science of our precious oceans.

MEDAS, SPAIN
T he Medas Islands are an archipelago made up of
around seven small islands and some islets off the
northeast coast of Spain. A national marine park that
has been protected since 1990 with an abundance
of incredible underwater life making this a diver’s
paradise. The variety of underwater fauna and flora
is incredible and in a small area, you can see most
species of Mediterranean marine life, in sizes and
colours that need to be seen to be believed including;
groupers, barracudas, moray eels, dentex, eagle rays,
red hard coral, soft coral, nudibranches. The longest
island in the group is Meda Grande. At a shallow
depth you will find an abundance of life, colours, and
great landscapes including caves, tunnels, underwater
forests, and more. Past 20 metres you are already in
absolute darkness where there are up to 600 different
species providing a multitude of colours to the
underwater environment.

CORFU, GREECE
T he Ionian Sea is an elongated bay of the Mediterranean
Sea and Corfu is the biggest of the Ionian islands.
Some of the best sites can be found on Corfu with thriving
marine life of barracuda, moray eels, shrimp, reef fish and
critters. Visibility is always pretty good. Corfu has a great
wreck, The HMS Regulus, which sunk in 1945 as well as
caves to explore. Some caves are more for advanced divers
and cave specialists, while others are also ideal for nondivers
that can explore them from the surface. The Hole
of Ha is one of the more famous dive sites and caverns
in Corfu that goes inside a mountain. However, it does
not have a cover, so the reflection and the rays of the sun
create a beautiful light effect that make diving there very
special. The dive site, House Reef, is protected from strong
currents and therefore a good place for all levels as there is
plenty to see in the first 18m.
KORKULA, CROATIA
D iving off Korčula is like exploring a never-ending world of
underwater wonders. The sixth largest island in Croatia,
the island is know for its dense forests and medieval squares
and palaces, but the real jewels of this region lies in the coastal
waters. The pristine visibility of the water and plethora of marine
life makes for a dive experience like no other. You will be in awe
at the mesmerising beauty of the caves, walls and shipwrecks
that await you. You’ll encounter beautiful tropical fish, sponges,
anemones, and sea fans. And if you’re really lucky, there’s a
chance to see seahorses on the seagrass beds. It is truly a
spectacular place for diving and for underwater exploration.

Tender Moments
Monroe and Curtis starred in the 1959 romantic
comedy Some Like It Hot alongside Jack Lemmon. The
movie follows two men who pretend to be women to
join a travelling band for money. Curtis’ character falls for a
fellow band member played by Monroe, and has to switch back
and forth between his disguise as a female saxophone player
and a separate disguise as a wealthy male oil heir.
During a scene in which Curtis’ and Monroe’s characters try to
seduce each other on a yacht, they had to kiss. “It was awful,”
Curtis reported. “She nearly choked me to death by deliberately
sticking her tongue down my throat into my windpipe.”
Curtis infamously said that kissing Monroe was like ‘kissing
Hitler’ but he later took back the comment and said he was
joking. “Someone said to me, ‘Hey, what’s it like kissing
Marilyn?’ I said, ‘It’s like kissing Hitler. What are you doing
asking me such a stupid question?’” he told The Guardian in
2008. “That’s where it came from.” He also confirmed to the
Daily Mail, “I said it as a joke. I mean, it was such a … stupid
question, so I gave a stupid answer.”
The boat featured in the movie was a 121’ 30s vintage Nevins
that was named Tara and renamed LOVELY LADY in 1958 and
was used in many films and TV shows, the last being ‘Tequila
Sunrise’ with Mel Gibson in 1958.
For nautical fans everywhere the film had the classic following
dialogue:
Sugar (Marilyn Monroe): Which is the port and which is the
starboard?
Junior (Tony Curtis): Well that depends on whether you’re coming
or going. I mean, normally, the aft is on the other side of the
stern. And that’s the bridge, so you can get from one side of
the boat to the other.
