Celebrate Matariki with 

Tīrama Mai light show 

CHECK OUT new 

commissioned artworks, take 

home a free tree, and soak 

in the city sights illuminated 

by Tīrama Mai this Puaka- 

Matariki. 

The city council’s annual 

Tīrama Mai event starts at the 

weekend, celebrating Puaka- 

Matariki in the heart of the city. 

Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Art 

Centre, Te Pae and Riverside 

Market will feature a range of 

art and lighting installations 

each evening from 5pm until 

10pm, from tomorrow until 

Sunday, June 30. 

City council manager of 

events and arts Lucy Blackmore 

said the annual event, which 

celebrates the Puaka and Matariki 

stars through art and light 

installations, projections, music 

soundscapes and storytelling is 

always evolving with new commissioned 

works. 

“An installation of 

Papatūānuku, titled MOTHER, 

will stand four metres high and 

two metres wide, featuring a 

stunning design by Xoë Hall, lit 

up from inside,” Blackmore said. 

It will be in the North Quad of 

The Art Centre. 

“We’ve also partnered with 

Trees for Canterbury to give 

away 2000 small native trees 

over the festival. Planting a new 

tree in your backyard is a great 

way to celebrate the time of 

renewal that Te Tau Hou (the 

Māori New Year) brings, and we 

encourage people to take up this 

opportunity.” 

On select nights, the giveaway 

will be based in front of Te 

Pae. 

Te Pae has close to 10 installations, 

including new lightbox 

artworks and a projection animation 

by Ariki Creative. 

“Other giveaways during the 

festival include light-up yo-yos 

from our sponsor, Orion, for the 

young and young of heart, and 

a free sausage sizzle run by The 

Hits FM,” Blackmore said. 

There will also be storytelling 

and kapa haka performances on 

select nights. The “test night” for 

Tirama Mai is this evening. 

The Arts Centre will be 

hosting a number of events, 

including Te Waiatatanga Mai 

o Te Atua (Song of the Gods), 

a brand-new exhibition at the 

Observatory tower which tells a 

version of the Ngāi Tahu creation 

story, as written down in 

1849 by Matiaha Tiramōrehu. 

The Matariki Midwinter 

Celebration invites attendees to 

honour a loved one who made 

a significant impact this year, 

while the two-night Garden 

City Mākete will feature local 

artisans, live performances, and 

food offerings. There will also be 

kapa haka in the Great Hall.

Matariki, the Māori 

New Year, is a time of 

cultural and spiritual 

significance. The 

annual event marks 

the appearance of 

the Matariki star 

cluster, also known as 

Pleiades, in the early 

morning sky. 

When these nine 

stars become visible, it 

signifies the start of a 

new year in the Māori 

lunar calendar. 

Matariki comes 

from the phrase 

“Ngā mata o te ariki 

Tāwhirimātea”, “the 

eyes of the god 

Tāwhirimātea” and 

translates to “little 

eyes”, highlighting the 

stars’ role as important 

markers of time and 

seasonal change. 

The exact date 

varies each year, as it 

is determined by the 

appearance of the 

Matariki star cluster in 

the predawn sky. 

But this year, the 

public holiday lands on 

Friday, June 28.

Safety upgrades to be made permanent 

STREETS IN Aranui will be 

permanently upgraded to make 

the area safer for people heading 

to nearby schools, shops or 

passing through the community. 

The Waitai Coastal-Burwood- 

Linwood Community Board 

approved installing safety 

improvements throughout 

Breezes Rd, Shortland St, 

Hampshire St and Rowan Ave. 

Upgrades including a new 

pedestrian crossing, speed 

humps, intersection upgrades, 

wider footpaths and bollards 

were trialled earlier this year, 

funded 90 per cent through 

NZ Transport Agency Waka 

Kotahi’s Streets for People 

programme. 

The main aim was to 

encourage school students from 

nearby Haeata Community 

Campus, St James School and 

Chisnallwood Intermediate to 

use active transport modes. 

During the trial, residents 

told the council they felt some 

intersections had been made too 

tight, so vehicles were having to 

cross the centre line and that the 

bollards were unattractive. 

After the feedback, changes 

were made to the final design 

so the intersections will now 

be widened to make turns less 

harsh, replacing the temporary 

bollards with permanent kerb 

build outs. 

These upgrades were approved 

by the board, as well as 

permanently installing the speed 

humps, platforms, and raised 

pedestrian crossings. 

Community board chair Paul 

McMahon said the safety of 

pedestrians, particularly from 

nearby schools, was the key 

consideration when making the 

decision to permanently upgrade 

the roads. 

“This area is busy with 

children playing and lots of 

pedestrians – making sure 

they’re safe is our priority,” he 

said. 

“I’m pleased we’ve gone 

through the robust trial process 

and adapted the designs both 

during the trial around Wainoni 

Park and St James School, and 

then again when making this 

permanent decision.” 

“The Aranui community 

turned out in force to share 

their views, and I think we 

have the best combination of 

making the streets safer for 

everyone and responding to their 

submissions,” McMahon said. 

Mental health mission for Tama the Tui

THE AUTHOR behind a new 

children’s book, Tama the Tui has 

been down for a while hopes it will 

encourage children to open up 

when they feel “sad and blue”. 

The book, written by Alvante 

Harris and illustrated by Maria 

Carroll, follows the journey of 

Tama the young tui who is feeling 

down but learns to share his 

feelings with friends and family. 

Harris hopes it will encourage 

children to share their feelings. 

“Not only will it give them the 

tools to open up, but it might even 

give them the tools to be able to 

support people when they need to. 

“So, if a friend does open up to 

them that they’re not feeling so 

good, they’ll have the tools they 

need to actually be able to help 

them and support them through 

that,” he said. 

It is the first book Harris has 

written after completing his first 

draft in 2022. 

He admits mental health is 

a difficult topic to discuss in 

New Zealand, but believes it is 

important for kids to learn about. 

“One thing that’s been common 

throughout my life, throughout 

my friends and family, is people 

aren’t very good at opening up 

and talking about their feelings,” 

Harris said. 

“So I figured that if you write a 

book for kids, then they can learn 

early and get the tools they need 

to be able to open up when they 

need to.”

Red zone work a fun escape from class 

NURTURING nature in the red 

zone is where you’ll find George 

and Emma each week. 

Rain or shine, the pair spend 

their Friday mornings mulching, 

uncovering hidden plants 

and picking up rubbish in the 

Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor. 

George and Emma belong to 

Riccarton High’s Kohanga Ako 

class, which is purpose built for 

students with special education 

needs. 

As part of the class’s work 

experience programme, the 

students collaborate with 

the city council parks team, 

volunteering their time and 

contributing to the red zone 

regeneration. 

Twenty-year-old George, 

who started volunteering due 

to his passion for the outdoors, 

has an eagle eye for spotting 

small pieces of rubbish to be 

collected or plants in need of 

releasing. 

“It’s cool to get away from 

the classroom and spend time 

outside,” George said. 

“I like using the parks tools to 

pick up rubbish, it makes it a lot 

easier to keep the place clean.”

weekend on Brooker Ave in the

of Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park 

Trust, the new park aims to 

serve as an educational hub and 

a nature haven to encourage 

a deeper connection with the 

environment.

the park is now home to multiple 

wētā ‘hotels’ and ‘apartments’ 

made at workshops held at 

Phillipstown Community Hub. 

These are warm and dry spaces 

where ecologically important 

native wētā, bees and wasps can 

keep safe from predators like rats 

and birds. 

The park has been designed 

partnership ranger Sarah 

Mankelow says the work is 

a two-way street, providing 

valuable experience while 

regenerating the area. 

“It’s a huge help for us having 

these students work in the 

ŌARC, and after months on 

site they’re experienced enough 

that they can occasionally work 

unsupervised,” Mankelow said. 

“Maintenance is such an 

important part of red zone 

regeneration, and we’re 

grateful to have a helping hand 

while providing workplace 

experience.” 

Maintenance days are 

advertised on the city council’s 

website, and the council is 

always looking for volunteers to 

help.

Teachers run to raise funds for sick mum

TWO TEACHERS raised more 

than $1000 a day for each day 

they pounded the pavement. 

Daniel Kahura and Thomas 

Tennent ran 21km before work 

for 21 days to support Kahura’s 

sister, Kylie Kahura, who has 

stage 4B Hodgkin lymphoma. 

Kahura and Tennent both 

attended and now teach at St 

Thomas of Canterbury College. 

Kylie, 35, a mother of four, 

received her diagnosis in 2022. 

Despite the all-clear after 

chemotherapy, her cancer 

returned with increased 

aggression late last year. 

“Now it’s just a waiting game,” 

said Kylie, who awaits further 

scans after she completed 

another round of chemotherapy, 

blood transfusions, and a stem 

cell transplant. 

She is now enjoying spending 

time with her family. 

Kylie said she was “truly 

blown away” by the support 

from the pair and wider 

community. 

“I am just so grateful and 

blessed,” she said. 

Tennent, 33, proposed the 

idea to Kahura after reading 

a book by ultra-runner Ned 

Brockmann. 

“I was not an ultra-runner 

by any means, but I wanted to 

do something to make other 

people’s lives better,” he said.

and the wider community, the 

pair trained for eight weeks 

before their first run on April 1. 

In the two months that 

followed, the high-school friends 

raised $22,000 through private 

donations and their Givealittle 

page. 

Kahura, 30, said he was 

thankful for the support and 

generosity of the community. 

“I feel super blessed for the 

people who have shown their 

love and donated to help support 

my family.” 

But going into the running 

challenge, the pair were not 

without their doubts. 

“I knew doing them back-toback 

was going to be tough,” 

said Kahura, who feared 

he would fail the challenge 

after he experienced serious 

achilles tendon and lower back 

problems. 

Tennent, who gave up many 

hours of sleep and time with 

family, even experienced a 

severe case of rhabdo one week 

after finishing the last run. 

Rhabdo is when muscle breaks 

down, releasing contents into 

the bloodstream that can be life 

threatening if left untreated. 

“We made sacrifices and went 

through hard times to help 

someone who’s going through 

harder times than us,” said 

Tennent. He has now recovered. 

Craig Watson, head of 

supportive care for the Cancer 

Society Canterbury West Coast 

and Otago Southland, said the 

financial burden on families 

after diagnosis is significant. 

“I know of people refusing 

treatment because they have had 

to choose between travelling to 

treatment, or putting food on 

the table for their families,” said 

Watson. 

He said community support 

was vital to get families through 

a diagnosis. 

Kahura and Tennent said 

they were thankful they had 

experienced the of power of 

people. 

“It’s important to celebrate the 

small wins,” said Kahura.
