You’re on your way to 

work when a car crash happens. 

A backyard bonfire 

takes a turn while chopping 

firewood. While in your 

backyard, a neighbor has an 

accident with a lawnmower. 

These scenarios share a 

common thread - a person 

in need of help due to severe 

bleeding. This is where 

the American College of 

Surgeons Stop the Bleed® 

program comes in. Stop the 

Bleed is a simple set of skills 

that empowers everyday 

people to save lives in critical 

moments by learning a 

few basic techniques. 

Training That Empowers 

All 

May is National Stop the 

Bleed month and training is 

for everyone - parents, students, 

office workers, teachers 

- literally everyone. No 

background in health care 

is needed to get trained. 

Before helping, ensure your 

own safety and that 911 has 

been called. The techniques 

can be distilled into three 

lifesaving steps: 

• Apply Direct Pressure: 

The first and most immediate 

step involves applying 

firm pressure directly to the 

wound, which helps to control 

bleeding. 

• Pack the Wound: If direct 

pressure alone is not enough, 

packing the wound with gauze 

or a cloth can help control 

more severe bleeding. 

• Apply a Tourniquet: For 

severe limb bleeding that 

does not stop with direct 

pressure or packing, a tourniquet 

may be necessary. 

This method is highly effective 

in stopping blood flow 

to a limb, thereby preventing 

further blood loss. 

These steps form the core 

of Stop the Bleed training, 

which takes about an hour 

to complete - less time than 

it takes to watch a movie. 

The training is available in 

a variety of formats, including 

in-person and online options.

Seriously, I LOVE THE COLOR 

PINK!! If I purchase anything, it 

must be pink. I don’t get items in 

other colors unless I need them. I’m 

obsessed. 

My obsession with pink started as 

a kid watching the” Mighty Morphin 

Power Rangers” show, the series’ 

first (and best) generation. Obviously, 

I wanted to be Kimberly Ann Hart, 

the original Pink Ranger. 

To be honest, I also loved the Yellow 

Ranger, because girls rule — and 

Thuy (who played Trini, the original 

Yellow Ranger) was excellent. 

But yellow is not pink. 

To prove to you that I am a pink-aholic, 

let me share a secret with you. 

Everything (well, almost everything) 

in my life is pink. My car is decorated 

in pink. My desk has pink accessories. 

My headphones are pink. My phone 

case is pink (actually, the phone itself 

is even pink!). I have a pink office 

chair at home. I have a pink “E” on my 

keyring. My backpack has pink in it. 

My bedroom is full of pink — bedding, 

organizers, décor, etc. 

Once I get my own place again, everything 

— from the appliances to a 

single piece of paper — will be pink. 

EVERYTHING. 

I (almost) feel sorry for my future 

spouse having to live in a pink world. 

But, then again, pink is absolutely, 

positively, the best-est of the best colors 

in the world. 

Evidently, I’m not the only person 

with a pink bias. There’s actually a special 

day that’s all about pink. It’s called 

(you guessed it!) National Pink Day, 

and it’s just around the corner on June 

23. I am so excited! It’s a day about 

pink, and other colors DO NOT matter 

… at least on June 23.

Fun fact: Did you know that pink 

was originally considered a “boyish” 

color? In the 1700s pink was considered 

a “stronger” color than blue, and 

allegedly, mothers dressed their male

But back to my topic. I never knew 

there was an actual pink holiday. If I’d 

only known, I would’ve been hosting 

pink parties every year! Now that I 

know, I’ll use the day to celebrate my 

obsession with pink. Honestly, I will 

celebrate pink any day of the year. 

Hmm … I thought of some ideas to 

celebrate NPD (that’s National Pink 

Day, by the way). 1) Wear pink. 2) Bake 

or buy pink treats. 3) Create pink DIY 

artwork. 4) Indulge in a DIY pink spa 

day. 5) Perform random acts of kindness 

but in PINK. 6) Create a pink 

vision board. 7) Make a pink tie-dyed 

T-shirt. I could go on and on (and on). 

Well, that’s all I have for you toppers 

for this week. Don’t forget to 

go out and make the world pink this 

weekend.
