speculating that it was well-attended and a 

big hit with those who 

grew up on the music 

of the ’70s and ’80s.

on Aug. 16. There’s

I was waiting for a repair at a small retailer 

in Sioux Falls, SD, the other day, and 

the sales associate and I started chatting, 

quickly landing on the topic of Okoboji. 

Turns out she has a two-night stay booked 

for July at one of the hotels, her first visit to 

the Iowa Great Lakes in more than a dozen 

years. I also learned she is a live music fan 

and purchased tickets for their family to 

one of the paid concerts in July. I quickly 

launched into a list of all the things they 

could enjoy during their time at the Lakes, 

including a day at Arnolds Park Amusement 

Park for her tween-agers. I even explained 

the kids would be fine on their own at the 

park while she and her husband could 

grab lunch nearby or wander through the 

Queen’s Court stores. 

I’m confident that after my off-the-cuff 

tourist pitch, it won’t be another decade 

before their next visit.

It will be the band’s first time at the Pearson 

Lakes Art Center, but it certainly won’t be the 

first time the audience has heard their music. 

Commotion: A Tribute to the Music of 

Creedence Clearwater Revival is scheduled for 

their art center debut at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 

18, in the Lauridsen Performing Arts Theatre. 

Tickets are available for $35 for art center members 

or $45 for nonmembers. 

Those who save a seat will get whisked away to 

the glory days of the late ’60s and early ’70s with 

the iconic sounds and legendary hit songs of CCR. 

Leading the way on guitar is Jimmy Ryan, recently 

inducted to the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of 

Fame. Ryan performed at the art center last year 

helping pave the way for Commotion to take the 

stage this year. 

“Jimmy Ryan was 

here last year as he 

was inducted into 

the Hall of Fame and 

has put this band 

together with a lot of 

great artists,” Rachelle 

said. “I’d been looking 

for a CCR band and 

this particular group

For a second summer season West O 

Beer is encouraging folks to go on a 

run. 

Or a walk, or a stroll. However one decides 

to tackle the weekly West O Beer Run 

is up to them. 

The main goal, according to run organizer 

Britney Streufert, is for people to get outside 

and enjoy some exercise with the camaraderie 

of a group of like-minded individuals. 

Streufert had helped organize similar 

runs in Florida and when her family started 

spending their summers in the Iowa Great 

Lakes, she thought it would be a fantastic 

way to make new friends in the area. 

“I reached out to West O and we launched 

it last summer. The first run last June we had 

seven people and honestly four of them 

were related to me,” Streufert said with a 

laugh. 

The number quickly grew and the first run 

of this summer saw 28 runners and walkers 

show up to the brewery. 

It’s free to attend and everyone interested 

in participating meets at West O at 6 p.m. 

— Streufert encourages arriving a little early 

for sign-in — and then the group goes over 

the route, any questions and takes a group 

photo before heading out. 

There are three routes available up to 1.7 

miles. 

“It’s great for all ages and all paces. Last 

week we even had someone bring their 

French bulldog in a stroller and walk the 

loop,” Streufert said. “A neat thing about

where everyone is entered into a raffle drawing

more runs they receive a free shirt from West

“I think it’s a great way to get people active 

out and about, and for the brewery it brings 

in different people that maybe haven’t been 

there before, and for me I’m just really exited 

that people have been so responsive to 

it,” Streufert said.

— he’ll be telling stories 

and just really going back 

to those Rat Pack kind of 

days. We’re excited to have

as Sinatra’s widow, Barbara

CRUISE on in 

Cruising in the Iowa Great Lakes usually 

means that you are on the water in a boat, 

but on Saturday, June 22, the Spirit Lake 

Chamber of Commerce is inviting you to join in 

on a different kind of cruising. 

They’ll be hosting the annual Spirit Lake Chamber 

Cruise-In. It’s set to take place in the evening 

starting at 5 p.m. and will go until 8 p.m. on Hill 

Avenue in downtown Spirit Lake and will be a 

delight for car lovers of all ages. 

The event has been going strong for more than 

twenty years and part of the reason is due to the 

casual atmosphere of the event for those who 

want to bring their car and participate in the 

Cruise-In. 

In addition to cool cars to check out and admire, 

there will also be other types of entertainment 

for people to enjoy that evening. There will 

be nonprofits selling food, according to Reed. 

“The Cruise-In is a great time in downtown 

Spirit Lake where Hill Avenue is filled with all 

kinds of classic cars, music, several nonprofits 

doing food sales, everything from hamburgers to 

walking tacos and home baked goods,” said Regina 

Reed, the director of the Spirit Lake Chamber 

of Commerce. “The streets are filled with music 

set up by Ray Tucker, the music takes you back to 

the era of the classics.” 

In addition to their traditional Saturday event, 

they will be continuing with a warmup event of 

sorts at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, that got its start 

during the coronavirus pandemic. 

“The cruise starts at our presenting sponsor 

Okoboji Motor Company. We gather there and 

line up the cars in several rows on the side of the 

lot and everyone visits and looks at each other’s 

cars until we leave at 5:30 p.m. There are food 

trucks for the drivers and places to eat while we 

wait,” Reed said. 

Both events are sure to provide fun for car 

enthusiasts and the people who love those car 

enthusiasts alike. 

“I hope people have a great time with family 

and friends enjoying some history, music and 

great food,” Reed said. “It’s such a fun time hearing 

the stories of the car enthusiasts. I love seeing 

the streets filled with our amazing community 

enjoying our beautiful downtown Spirit Lake.” 

Both events are free to attend and no registration 

is required for classic car owners who want to 

participate. 

So get your motor running and head to downtown 

Spirit Lake either Friday or Saturday night to 

enjoy the sight of classic cars cruising the Lakes. F
