Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s
excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny
on what we ate, who served us, who we bumped into and, you
know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Smash Shack, one of those cute-as-a-button joints in
the Akroteria food court on the beachfront near Perry Street.
The vibe: You roll up in your swimming cozzie, ready for a good
feed in the middle of a perfect beach day (or at the beginning or end of
that beach day), snag a wooden picnic bench and chow down on some
freshly made goodies, while taking in that intoxicating salty air.
The owner: Jason Kramer has some very early history with Exit
Zero magazine. While working for PegLeg parasail, he was featured in
one of our first issues. But it was in issue six where he really made his
mark, being named as one of the eight contestants in an utterly random
competition we held to find an EZ Guy and an EZ Girl. We were looking
for attractive people with big personalities. Jason qualified on both (he
talks a LOT, and has lovely piercing blue eyes), though he didn’t win.
Our esteemed panel of judges instead chose Cape May lifeguard DJ
Draus, while Ashley Davis was voted the EZ Girl. Anyway...
Celebrity sibling: Also worth noting — Jason may or may not have a
sister whose alter ego is Cape May’s most famous piggie mascot (that’s
all the clues you’re getting).
The food: On this day, two of the EZ crew were nursing hangovers,
and smash burgers seemed like the perfect antidote. And they were!
We won’t be naming names, but Katie’s (whoops!) burger somewhat
quelled the after-effects that come from downing two bottles of wine
after a particularly challenging Sunday night managing Exit Zero Filling
Station. Smash burgers are the specialty here, which you could have
guessed from the Smash Shack name. But our gang also enjoyed an
excellent chicken caesar wrap, and the crinkle-cut fries were fiendishly
good, too.
Pro tip: Breakfast is an excellent idea here! Our next trip will be
to visit at 8am, when Smash Shack opens daily, to start the day with
a loaded breakfast wrap, hash brown on the side. They also offer latenight
munchies as well. Stop in and tell Jason Exit Zero sent you. We’re
not saying it will do you any good, but it won’t do you any harm, either.

of locals as well as hotel guests. They serve classic
tavern food for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with a

The Boiler Room has a chic industrial vibe with
exposed brickwork, stainless steel table tops and a
dance floor that’s often bopping. Feast upon brickoven
pizza with draft beers.
Congress Hall’s lounge got a very groovy, very sexy
renovation. The bar was enlarged (and moved) and
there are all sorts of seating nooks from which to
enjoy great drinks and a great vibe.
Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw
bar, surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus
outside tables for some great people-watching!
Enjoy a fun and creative twist on an age-old favorite.
From wild combinations, to classic ingredients, there’s
plenty you’ll want to try when you visit.
Serving great classic comfort food in a beautiful
location with a historic vibe. Chef Sherry Sheldon
created a menu that offers pub-style fare while
embracing the farm-to-table concept.
The Kulkowitz family’s latest culinary adventure.
They’re bringing a new vibe to the Cape May dining
scene with menu featuring local food with global
flavors.
As you’d expect of an Irish pub, this is the place to get
Guinness and good pub grub. The burgers and meat
pies have been receiving rave reviews.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Bird feeding is a popular pastime, with
over 50 million Americans allocating
a portion of their budget to it. Winter,
when birds are not defending individual
territories but are gathered in
flocks, is the most popular time for setting out
feeders. It is also a time when insect activity is
low and many bird species switch over to more
durable foods like fruits and other seeds.
To the perennial question — Is it okay to
feed birds in summer? — the answer is an
unconditional YES.
Backyard bird feeding is conducted mostly
for the benefit of humans, so while you may
attract fewer birds in summer, there is no reason
to deprive yourself from the pleasure of birds
during warmer months. Here in Cape May, we
are blessed by a variety of year-round species
that are happy to take advantage. Among them
are chickadees, titmice, White-breasted nuthatch,
Downey and Red-bellied, Blue Jays goldfinch,
House Finch and blackbirds. A perennial
favorite is the Northern Cardinal, the rakishly
crested bird that is featured on about half the
holiday greeting cards that are sent.
The key to attracting a variety of birds is
offering a variety of seed types. Black-oil sunflower
seed is universally loved by seed-eating
birds. If you offer nothing else, black-oil sun
works best. Mixed seed is attractive to finches,
blackbirds and turkeys.
We strive always to have one mixed seed
feeder and another filled with sunflower seed.
Other favorites include thistle seed (beloved
by goldfinch) and shelled peanuts, a hit with
blue jays and titmice. Suet is relished by many
species, especially woodpeckers.
As important as food type is, feeder placement
is crucial. Birds like woody vegetation for
protection against hawks, so feeders should be
placed near shrubs or trees. A feeder stuck in
an open yard is going to attract few birds. Make
sure feeders are placed away from windows
and patio doors — millions of birds are killed
every year by striking glass — and at least six
feet off the ground, the vertical leap range of
house cats.
Bring suet indoors at night unless you enjoy
feeding raccoons, but get it out early the next
morning when your hungry minions will be
looking for a high-energy snack.
Hawks? Small bird-eating hawks like
Cooper’s are attracted to concentrations of
songbirds. Just think of hawks as another bird
coming to your feeder — one that gets its seed
second hand.
Lastly, water is important, too. A shallow
bath in a shady spot will attract birds not partial
to seed. Robins are compulsive bathers.

The summer movie preview a few
weeks back didn’t touch on many family-friendly
movies. It focused mostly
on dystopian post-apocalyptic flicks.
Not at all family friendly. So, let’s see
what’s out there for the kids!
Turns out there is plenty! In my first summer
preview, I talked about Inside Out 2, which
looks amazing and hit theaters last week. I
had to see the original four times at the movies.
Now I could just buy it for $20 and watch
it over and over. I’ll be reviewing the sequel
soon.
But wait, there’s more. The movie IF is still
in theaters, and, like a lot of movies this year,
it’s scoring big with audiences, though less
so with critics. It’s written/directed by John
Krasinski and stars Ryan Renolds, Steve Carell
and a host of other celebs! Wyatt is my favorite
five-year-old critic, and he says, “IF was great.
I really like Bea, the blue guy, and the dad. It
was about imaginary friends. It made me feel
good. Kids five and older should watch it.”

It looks like a new generation — well, half
a generation — is going to be turned on to that
orange cat we know and love. Yes, Garfield
is coming back to theaters. Talk about history,
the comic strip has been around since
the mid-1970s, and was one of my favorites
growing up. The fat cat who loves lasagna has
gone back and forth from TV to movies, both
animated and live action. And now it’s back
to theaters again, with Chris Pratt as the voice
of Garfield.
“With the crayon, anything is possible!”
Does anybody know what I’m talking about?
Harold and the Purple Crayon promises to take
your imagination where it’s never been! This
looks like a wonderful adventure, starring
Zachary Levi of Shazam and Zooey Deschanel.
It’s adapted from a picture book published in
1955 by author/illustrator Crockett Johnson.
Now let’s start the parade of sequels. In
addition to Inside Out 2, there’s Despicable Me
4 (for those who can’t get enough of those
Minions, which includes me). For streamers,
Ultraman releases a new installment. It’s
hard to call this a franchise when it’s actually
more of a dynasty. The new movie, Ultraman:
Rising, hit Netflix last week. Rounding out the
parade is Moana 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Kung
Fu Panda 4 — so many sequels to choose from.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Cape May Music Festival
Cape May’s 19th-century heyday
coincided with a boom in popular
music as an increase in leisure time
meant that working people could
attend concerts. The compact and
affordable upright piano, invented in 1826,
brought music into modest homes. While
serious students played Chopin, Liszt and
Brahms, newcomers could entertain their
friends with more accessible tunes.
Thanks to affordable sheet music, music
hall tunes quickly became parlor music, with
subjects ranging from criminal biographies,
wash day blues, the challenges of poverty and
the history of the postage stamp, along with
more enduring themes like love, religion and
family. In 1895, the telharmonium, an early
effort in music-on-demand, allowed people
to hear songs through the telephone. The
songs were played on a large electric organ
which produced clear tones amplified by a
cone on the telephone receiver. It was expensive,
used a great deal of electricity, and users
faced crosstalk on the telephone lines. These
headaches, along with the increasing practicality
of the phonograph, doomed this early
synthesizer to failure, even as it inspired a
new generation of composers.
Today, though we can carry music everywhere,
live music remains a special event,
which the Cape May Music Festival has been
celebrating for 35 years. On Thursday, June
20, the Bay Atlantic Symphony and violinist
Qing Li bring the music of Mendelssohn
to Convention Hall. Tickets are $35, with
discounts for MAC members and students.
The festival concludes with the Cape May
Cabaret, featuring Erich Cawalla & the
Uptown Band Orchestra. This night of big
band music, dancing and dinner will be held
at Convention Hall, Sunday, June 23. Tickets
are $100, from capemaymac.org.
To enjoy your music outdoors, consider
Catch of Cape May at Canal Fest on Sunday,
June 23, held at a private home at 931
Seashore Road, to benefit the Nature Center
of Cape May. There’s music from Howard
Street Ramble, Don Shough Trio, and
SeaBillys with an auction, food truck and
drinks. Tickets are $40 or $500 for a table of
10. Visit njaudubon.org/cocm. Music lovers
should also remember the free concerts
in Rotary Park, Fridays through Mondays
through September 8 at 7pm. Bring your
own lawn chair or blanket, and enjoy your
favorite treats from the nearby Washington
Street Mall as you listen. Concerts are held
rain or shine, within reason.

Our daughter turned 11 last week and for
her birthday, we gave her a cell phone, as we
promised. We have placed parental controls
on it. The problem is my wife thinks that is
enough. I want to check her phone and make
sure. My wife thinks we should build bonds of
trust. I say trust is earned and our job as parents
is to be vigilant. I hate this. Surely there
is a path that builds trust and lets me sleep at

There is a path. Trust, but verify. And be
upfront. Educate her about the fact that there
are bad actors out there and it is your job as
parents to monitor those situations. As she
gets older, you can relax a bit, maybe. And the

My 14-year-old granddaughter dog sat
for me while I was away. I wanted to treat her
above what I paid her. I narrowed the choices
to fun restaurants like the Rusty Nail or Harry’s.
I texted her five days ago and she still has
not answered. Yesterday I called and she didn’t
pick up or return my call. I am hurt and, above
all, I’m angry with her mother for raising such
an inconsiderate child. Her mother would have
never gotten away with treating anyone so
rudely, let alone a grandmother. When I talked
to my daughter about it, she brushed it off
with the wide sweep of, “She’s 14. What do you
expect?” What do I expect? To be treated with
civility and respect. What is the next step? —

The next step is to find someone else to pet
sit. Or give her the job, since it seems she did
the job well, but keep it as a business arrangement.
Emotionally, put your granddaughter in
the deep freeze for a while. Find someone else
worthy of your generosity and go to lunch with
them. See what happens in the coming days,
but the best approach is to distance yourself.

AURORA is a beautiful Alaskan Malamute
looking for a quiet home. Her favorite thing is
to be brushed and when you are done one side,
she turns so that you can do the other side! She
has been nervous adjusting to shelter life, but
is gaining the confidence she needs. Aurora
has been working on her leash skills. If interested
in adopting her, contact the shelter.
XENA is a playful, affectionate girl. Her owner
brought her to the shelter when they could no
longer take care of her. She lived in a home
with children, but would do best with older
kids due to her size and enthusiasm. Xena
loves to play fetch and looks forward to snuggles.

second chance to live in a home.
MAGNUS came to the shelter as a stray. He is
comfortable with humans and looks forward
to seeing them. Magnus is easy to harness and
walks well on a leash. He is learning to play

TIPPY is a black cat with a white tip on the
end of her tail. She came to the shelter with
her mother Callie when their owner became
ill. Tippy is eight years old and in great health!
She is a house-trained indoor cat. She is
extremely sweet and social. The shelter would
consider breaking up the mother and daughter
team if necessary.
CALLIE is a bit of a couch potato. Weighing in
at 23 pounds, she needs diet and exercise. She
came to the shelter after living in a bedroom
for years with her daughter, Tippy. Callie is 10
years old and is an amazing cat with positive
energy. Callie is up-to-date on all her vaccinations
and is house-trained. If interested in
meeting this affectionate girl, call the shelter.
MITCHELL is a handsome grey-and-white
cat who was abandoned. He is declawed and
obviously an indoor cat. Mitchell is between
12 and 14 years old and in good health. He is
very sweet and calm. He would make a great
addition to a quiet, adult home. Mitchell
is up-to-date on vaccinations and housetrained.
