William Alexander Leidesdorff 

(Oct 23, 1810 – May 18, 1848) 

William Alexander Leidesdorff was born on October 

23, 1810, in St. Croix, then the Danish West Indies. 

He is one of the founders of San Francisco and one 

of the nation’s first black wealthy businessmen. His 

father was Danish, and his mother was Afro- 

Caribbean. Leidesdorff’s education encompassed 

St. Croix and Copenhagen. He was a merchant 

seaman and then a ship's captain. In 1842, he 

settled in Yerba Buena, now known as San 

Francisco, then a small Mexican port town. 

Leidesdorff established himself as a businessman, 

owning the only hotel, a commercial warehouse, and 

the bay's first steamboat. He was multilingual and a 

diplomat; he served as the U.S. Vice Consul to 

Mexico, negotiating between the Mexican 

government and the American settlers fighting to 

annex California. William donated land for the first public school in San Francisco, was on the first school board, 

and was San Francisco's first treasurer. Gold was first discovered in 1848, adjacent to his large ranch, Rio De los 

Americanos deeded to him by the Mexican government. At the onset of the gold rush, Leidesdorff died of typhoid 

fever on May 18, 1848. At the time, he was considered a founding father of San Francisco and was honored with 

being buried in the chapel floor of Mission Dolores.

Francisco. It includes visits to historic sites and 

introductions to visual arts in St. Croix, dining, 

beaches, music and fun!

About: 

Born in Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Krieger is 

deeply connected to her heritage as a seventh-generation 

Crucian and a collateral descendant of the esteemed Crucian 

William Alexander Leidesdorff, Jr., one of the founders of San 

Francisco. Since 2016, Norma has been passionately 

providing unforgettable St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands 

experiences to her tour guests. 

Krieger is an accomplished and respected curator, arts 

professional, and a U.S. Virgin Islands Tourism Ambassador. 

Education: Bachelor of Fine Arts, School of Art and Design at 

the Prestigious Pratt Institute: Major: Art Administration/Minor: 

Arts Education. 

St. Croix: Founder and Director of Cruzan Craft Market, St. 

Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, a non-profit organization; the 

Founding Executive Director of the Caribbean Center for the 

Arts, a non-profit organization; Founder and director of a nonprofit 

community-based visual arts organization, SOCA Society 

of Caribbean Artists; Photographer/Publisher of Three Sepia 

Tone Photography Books VISIONS I, II, II of St. Croix. 

New York: New York has also been a significant part of 

Krieger's professional journey. She is the Founding Chair of 

Pratt Alumni NYC Network and currently serves as an 

Advisory Board Member. Her 14 tenures at Ogilvy & Mather 

Advertising Worldwide, NYC, as Senior Art Buyer and Gallery 

Director for their exclusive private gallery, allowed her to work 

with renowned clients such as IBM and American Express. 

She is also the principal of Krieger Creative Group, a New 

York-based curatorial and art advisory company.
