Reptile of the Year 2024:
The adder, Vipera berus
The reptile of the year, the
common European adder, is
now strictly protected
and classified as
endangered in Austria.
Found in the
Alps, they’re elusive
and sometimes seen
basking in sunlight. Their
adaptation to colder climates
includes retaining eggs internally until
hatching. Threats include habitat loss,
such as drainage of wetlands and
development of ski resorts, which
endanger their transitional habitats.
For more details about the adder,
The Remarkable Life
of Otmar Reiser
Otmar Reiser, born on December 21,
1861 in Vienna developed a passion
for nature from a young age, particularly
collecting bird eggs and nests. After completing
his studies at the University of Natural Resources and
Life Sciences, he dedicated his life to ornithology and natural
sciences. Many of the animal species he discovered were
named after him. At 26, he was called to Sarajevo to help establish
the Bosnian-Herzegovinian National Museum, where
he oversaw the zoological collection for over three decades.
Despite personal sacrifices caused by the first world war, he
remained connected with Vienna's Natural History Museum
and gifted his 16,000-piece ornithology collection. To read
more about his life, challenges, and accomplishments read
Reference Materials in Mycotoxin
Analysis: The Pillars of Quality
Assurance
Advancements in mycotoxin analysis, especially
using mass spectrometry (MS) and liquid chromatography
with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/
MS), have greatly improved. These techniques
provide quick, sensitive, and precise detection of
multiple mycotoxins. Certified reference materials
are vital for ensuring consistent and accurate results
across labs conducting this kind of analysis.
A study led by LVA GmbH in cooperation with
BOKU University and University of Szeged focuses
on an in-depth assessment of the quality of
mycotoxin standards and how transitioning to ISO
17034 enhances the quality of mycotoxin analysis
but still requires further adaptation; read the
opinion piece on page 30.
