› BACKGROUND
This Action Plan has been created by
Dyffryn Peris residents who came together
in a Community Assembly on the Climate
between May 2022 and February 2023.

In responding locally to the climate and ecological emergency, the
Assembly agreed that all community climate action would be:
The Assemblies were organised and
facilitated by climate action movement
GwyrddNi, in partnership with Cyd
Ynni, our local partner in Dyffryn
Peris. The work was funded by the
National Lottery’s Community Fund.

Fair, inclusive and creative
Building Community Resilience
An education programme was held
in local schools and four assembly
sessions were held with members in
the community to learn, share and
discuss together before answering the
question: How can we in Dyffryn Peris
respond locally to Climate Change?
The answers can be read in this Action
Plan. There is now an open invitation for
anyone in the area who’s interested to join
us on the journey to realise these ideas.

WATER AND LAND
We will:
Increase knowledge of what is here
already, identifying and mapping
habitats, biodiversity and invasive
species to guide our approach.
Take a place by place approach,
avoiding ‘blanket solutions’ and working
with landowners to create a patchwork
of responses suited to place.
Support the flourishing of habitats,
species of plants, trees + animals in
the right places for biodiversity, flood
management and food production.
Support existing projects such as Llanddeiniolen
Nature Project and create a way to advertise for
volunteers.
Identify landowners/ custodians who want to work
with us to test our approach.
Start to map the invasive species (eg Himalayan
Balsam) and who is doing what about them
already.
Find out if there are lost/deteriorated wetlands/
marshes and encourage the creation/restoration of
wet areas.
Find out who/where can benefit from an increase in
tree cover for flood management/biodiversity and
identify the best approach to creating it.
Identify ‘key species’ in the Valley that could have
a big impact (e.g. yellow rattle); be indicator
species (like the Dipper); be most easily identified
by volunteers; encourage biodiverse habitats (e.g.
yellow iris); be something people care about (e.g.
red squirrels).
SOCIAL ENTERPRISES
AND PARTNERSHIPS
In order to build community resilience and
capacity, we will:
Look to establish a Community Partnership
to coordinate community action, bring
funding, listen to the community, plan
and promote and initiate actions, aid
governance, work with existing businesses,
co-produce positive change, address
climate change.
Acquire community assets.
Seek a volunteer coordinator after
researching models.
Develop community hubs in every
community to support each other.
Engage with other social enterprises e.g. Cwmni
Bro + Partneriaeth Ogwen and the Gwynedd social
enterprise network to research what could work.
Research financial models and volunteering models.
Research community asset acquisition (e.g. Electric
Mountain) and asset transfers from Gwynedd Council
and create an asset list.
Engage with ArdalNi 2035.
Engage with the broader community to bring groups
together.

CIRCULAR
ECONOMY
Dyffryn Peris’ Community Assembly on the Climate
wishes to act in the area of Circular Economy
to reduce resource consumption and increase
community resilience by sharing resources.
We will:
Create community spaces to host
Repair Cafes
Library of things
Clothing exchange
Recycling education hub
Develop a time share system to help each other.
Co-create open air classrooms with local
school/s out of repurposed materials.
Volunteers to research time share systems
from other areas e.g. LETS from Totness
and try to recruit further volunteers.
Design and host some test events e.g.
clothes exchange and repair cafe.
Consult further with GwyrddNi schools to
discuss and create open air classrooms.
Continue to meet as the Circular Economy
working group and learn from other areas.
BUILDINGS
EFFICIENCY
Dyffryn Peris’ Community Assembly on the climate
wishes to take action on Buildings and Efficiency
to reduce CO2 emissions, improve housing
options + energy costs and develop local skills.
We will:
Advocate for higher standards in renovation
+ new build using Passivhaus principles.
Advocate for existing policies to change to
allow the use of existing traditional buildings
for affordable housing for local people.
Explore the possibility of developing a
community co-op association to buy and
renovate properties for local people.
Link to education providers such as Penygroes Net Zero
centre and The Centre for Alternative Technology.
Link to Cwmpas - community led housing
and social enterprise experts.
Research funding models.
Host a meet-up for interested people to
share experience, knowledge and skills.
SUSTAINABLE
TRANSPORT
Dyffryn Peris’ Community Assembly on the Climate
wishes to take action on Transport and Mobility to
reduce carbon emissions, improve connections between
villages, improve safety, reduce noise + traffic.
We will:
Revolutionise school transport.
Promote apps for bus use and lift shares.
Encourage a safe and integrated multi-modal network.
Create a walking bus committee
for Ysgol Llanrug.
Raise pedestrianisation with
councils and schools.

COMMUNITY
RENEWABLE
ENERGY
Dyffryn Peris’ Community Assembly on the Climate
wishes to take action on Renewable Energy to reduce
carbon emissions and invest in the community.
We will:
Research development of a hydro
turbine on a suitable river.
Research development of urban and rural solar farms.
Research small wind turbines.
Create/discover a body to research the project.
Bring an interest group together.
Find connections with landowners.
Seek funding for a feasibility study.
Find roof spaces (priivate and
public) for solar farms.
Study visits to other hydro and solar schemes.
Research licenses, grid connections and
contracting with Ynni Padarn Peris (YPP).

THE STORY OF
THE LAND
Dyffryn Peris’ Community Assembly on
the Climate wishes to take action on
History and Living Heritage to capture
the wisdom of previous generations,
promote identity, connection to the land,
creativity and the Welsh Language.
We will:
Host pop-up workshops in small
communities to collect stories
and create new ones through
various creative expressions.
Collect the stories and weave
them into new ones, exhibitions +
performances by local artists.
Re-connect with and re-interpret the
Mabinogi as a metaphor for greater
care of the earth and each other.
Connect with local arts initiatives and
submit a funding application.
Partner with organisations that collect
old stories and place names.
Work with Cae Mabon + Gwilym
Morus Baird and other artists.
Collect tales of quarry folk, farmers,
ecologists and residents.
ALLOTMENTS
AND COMMUNITY
GARDENS
Dyffryn Peris’ Community Assembly on
the Climate wishes to take action with
Allotments and Commmunity Gardens to
bring people together to grow, encourage
social connections and connection to
the natural world and the earth.
We will:
Create a community food map.
Share information and food.
Create a space to share seeds,
chats, equipment and company.
Create micro community gardens +
allotments for people to grow themselves.
Create a group interested in the above.
Get the word out and scope interest
Contact stakeholders (local councillor
and Social Farms and Gardens).
Create a group.
Find a ‘place’.
Look at creating spaces with other groups/projects
e.e. Electric Mountain and Pentref Taclus.
