Spring Home Buying Tips for Pet
Owners: Finding the Perfect Pet-
Friendly Haven -Rick and Morty Style
Wubba lubba dub-dub, fellow Rick and Morty fans! Are you ready to embark on an adventure through
the multiverse of gardening? Whether you're a fan of interdimensional travel or just looking to create a
pet-friendly paradise in your backyard, we've got you covered. Join us as we blend the eccentricity of
Rick and Morty with the tranquility of gardening to craft a space where your furry friends can roam
freely and safely.
1. Dimension-Hopping Plant Selection
Just like Kitten Rick and I traverse dimensions, let's pick out some greenery that'll make our furry pals
purr with delight. We're aiming for plants that won't send them to Birdperson's nest in the sky, so think
spider plants, Boston ferns, and African violets—safe and stylish, just like Rick's lab coat.
2. Portal Protection: Pet-Safe Fencing and Boundaries
Remember, Morty, we gotta keep Snuffles safe and sound. Install some sturdy pet-friendly fencing
around our garden of wonders to keep our furry adventurers from wandering into unknown territories.
Safety first, Morty—always safety first.
3. Interdimensional Play Spaces
Morty, it's time to get schwifty! Let's build an obstacle course fit for a Jerry, complete with tunnels,
ramps, and maybe even a miniature Citadel of Ricks. With plenty of toys and interactive elements, our
furry Mortys will be bouncing off the walls in no time!
4. Herbology 101: Growing Pet-Friendly Herbs
Listen, Morty, I'm not just gonna sit here and regurgitate some basic gardening knowledge. We're
talking about cultivating a veritable Garden of Flavors, Morty—basil, parsley, catnip—you name it. It's
like having a Plumbus for your palate, Morty.
5. Cosmic Convergence: Balancing Aesthetics and Functionality
Remember, Morty, form follows function. We're aiming for a harmonious blend of chaos and order,
just like a well-oiled portal gun. Decorate with themed accents, quirky signage, and cosmic trinkets,
but never forget the prime directive—safety for all beings, Morty.
04

Final Thoughts
And there you have it, folks—a pet-friendly garden fit for a Council of Ricks. With Kitten Rick and
Morty as our guides, we've traversed dimensions, dodged space snakes, and emerged victorious on
the other side. So grab your portal gun, Morty—it's time to get gardening!
Training Corner with RUFF University!
Super-charging the word “YES!” (Oh, and be excited about this “YES”)
Training your dog to respond to a “YES” marker is crucial for effective communication and
successful training. By teaching your dog to associate the word “YES” with desirable behaviors,
you are giving clear communication that indicates to your dog when they have correctly fulfilled
a cue request. This technique allows for more precise and immediate feedback, which helps
your dog understand what you are requesting.
Positive reinforcement techniques, such as rewarding your dog with treats/toys or praise
immediately after they respond to the “YES” marker, can strengthen the desired behavior and
make training more enjoyable for you and your awesome dog. Dogs are highly motivated by
food and toy rewards (each dog is different), and by utilizing positive reinforcement, you are
encouraging your dog to repeat desirable behaviors that lead to positive outcomes, including an
amazing bond.
How to do this:
Sit with your dog for 3-5 minutes at least twice per day for a few days and say, “YES!” Then,
immediately follow the “YES” marker with the reinforcer (preferred food item/treat or a toy).
After you super-charge “YES” as a marker with your dog, your dog will understand which
behavior you are looking for. They will probably look at you immediately to
be paid (the reinforcer/food or toy).
Now, you can use your “YES” marker (and positive reinforcement) for all of your
training. Always consider the A, B, Cs - Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence.
Antecedents occur immediately before the behavior (e.g., you ask your dog to
come to you/recall). Then, the Behavior (e.g., your dog comes to you), and you mark (“YES”) and
reward with a high-value treat (the Consequence). Guess what? Consequences shape behaviors!
Navigating Pet-Friendly
Rentals: Tips for Renters
with Furry Friends
Finding a rental home that welcomes pets can be a daunting task. For many pet owners,
their furry companions are like family, and ensuring their comfort and happiness is as
important as finding the right place for themselves. Whether you have a playful pup, a
curious cat, or another beloved pet, here are some tips to help you navigate the petfriendly
rental market and secure a home that suits both you and your furry friend.
1. Start Your Search Early
The search for a pet-friendly rental can take longer than a regular rental search. Start
looking at least two to three months before your desired move-in date. This will give you
ample time to find a place that meets your needs and allows pets without the stress of a
last-minute scramble.
2. Work with a Pet-Friendly Realtor
Engaging a realtor who specializes in pet-friendly rentals can significantly simplify your
search. As a pet-friendly realtor, I have extensive knowledge of local properties that
welcome pets and can help you navigate the complexities of pet policies. Realtors have
access to a broad network and can often find listings that aren’t advertised publicly. Plus,
we can advocate on your behalf with landlords, potentially negotiating better terms or
fees for your pet.
3. Be Prepared with Pet Documentation
Landlords may request documentation for your pet. This can include vaccination records,
proof of spaying or neutering, and references from previous landlords or neighbors.
Having these documents ready can demonstrate your responsibility as a pet owner and
reassure potential landlords that your pet is well-behaved and well-cared-for.
08

4. Highlight Your Pet’s Positive Qualities
When communicating with landlords, emphasize the positive aspects of your pet. If your
dog is well-trained, mention any obedience classes they've completed. If your cat is
strictly indoors, highlight that they won't cause any damage to the outdoor areas.
Providing a pet resume with photos and a brief description of your pet’s personality and
habits can also be beneficial.
5. Understand Pet Policies and Fees
Before signing a lease, carefully review the pet policies. Some landlords have restrictions
on the type, size, or number of pets allowed. There may also be additional pet deposits,
monthly pet rent, or specific cleaning fees. Understanding these terms upfront can help
you avoid unexpected expenses and ensure the rental is truly suitable for your pet.
6. Consider the Pet’s Perspective
When evaluating potential rentals, consider the environment from your pet’s point of
view. Look for features like nearby parks, walking trails, and pet-friendly amenities.
Ensure there’s enough space for your pet to move around comfortably and think about
the safety of the area, particularly for pets that spend time outdoors.
7. Negotiate When Possible
Don’t be afraid to negotiate pet terms with landlords. If a property seems perfect but has
a strict no-pet policy, ask if the landlord might reconsider, especially if your pet is small or
particularly well-behaved. Offering to pay an extra deposit or providing additional
references can sometimes help sway their decision.
09

Navigating Pet-Friendly
Rentals: Tips for Renters
with Furry Friends
8. Stay Informed About Local Laws
Familiarize yourself with local laws regarding pet ownership. Some cities and states have
specific regulations about the number of pets you can have, leash laws, and pet waste
disposal. Ensuring you comply with these laws can prevent conflicts with neighbors and
landlords.
9. Ensure Your Pet is Comfortable During the Move
Moving can be stressful for pets. On moving day, keep your pet in a quiet, secure space
away from the chaos. Gradually introduce them to their new home, setting up their
familiar bed, toys, and food bowls to create a sense of normalcy. Taking the time to help
your pet adjust can make the transition smoother for both of you.
10. Build a Good Relationship with Your Landlord
Maintaining open communication with your landlord is key. Keep them informed about
any changes with your pet, such as acquiring a new pet or changes in pet behavior.
Promptly address any pet-related issues, like damages or noise complaints, to build trust
and ensure a positive rental experience.
Conclusion
Securing a pet-friendly rental may require extra effort, but the joy of having your furry
friend by your side makes it all worthwhile. By starting your search early, working with a
pet-friendly realtor, and considering both your and your pet’s needs, you can find a rental
home that welcomes and accommodates your entire family. Happy house hunting!
Summer Hazards For Pets
As temperatures continue to rise, our furry friends will have additional
time outdoors. With this comes the opportunity to discuss common
summer pet hazards. Common issues for which pets present to the
hospital include heat related injuries or illnesses, allergic reactions to
bee stings or insect bites, allergic skin disease, plant ingestion,
trauma from being off leash (particularly being hit by cars and dog
fights), those easy to blame fertilizers and pesticides, swimming
related health hazards, and pet hazards commonly present at your
family BBQs.
Heat
Whether it’s a walking on a hot sidewalk, being out in sun, or in a car,
our pets cannot tolerate high temperatures as well as many think
they can. When in doubt, think about if you would put yourself in the
position your dog would be. I know I wouldn’t want to walk barefoot
on hot pavement, sit in a car in 100 degree heat, or be out in the
sweltering sun for hours on end. Heat stroke is often fatal, not to
mention extremely expensive to treat if a patient needs to be
hospitalized. Target shade for walks if possible, as this will limit your
dog’s exposure to hot pavement, higher temperatures, and sunburns.
Keep walks short during hot weather.
Allergic Reactions
Although most reactions are mild and often limited to hives and facial
swelling, some can be more severe and include vomiting, diarrhea,
and trouble breathing. Often times, we never know what caused the
reaction but it is usually caused by insect bites or bee stings after a
pet was outside. Regardless the cause, the good news is that it
usually resolves with steroid and/or anti-histamine injections and
some medication to go home. Usually the problem resolves within a
few hours, however sometimes signs can persist for several days.
11
Allergic Skin Disease
Both flea allergy dermatitis and environmental allergies are very
common causes of itchy skin in our pets. We tend to see this more and
more when the warmer weather hits. Although we may not always see
fleas or flea dirt (flea feces) on your pet, even a single flea bite can
elicit a reaction in some patients causing itching. For this reason, fleas
cannot always be easily excluded as a cause for a pet’s skin issues.
Using a veterinary recommended flea and tick preventative on every
pet in the house is very important to prevent fleas and their associated
problems. If your pet has itchy skin in the warmer months, but not in
the winter, it is more common that environmental allergies are to
blame. Although antihistamines can be helpful for treating this, some
pets may need a stronger oral or injectable medication to help keep
them comfortable.
Plant Ingestion
Dogs will be dogs and eat anything and everything. Although some
dogs ingest grass because they are nauseous, this is not always the
reason. Sometimes they just like to eat it. Clearly there are more toxic
plants that are out there however. It is sometimes impossible to
prevent, but if your pet ingests particular plants, they can become very
ill, and not uncommonly may require hospitalization. If your pet ingests
a plant, do your best to find out what the plant is, and if you have any
concerns you can browse the ASPCA list of poisonous plants
(https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-andnon-toxic-plants),
contact the ASPCA poison control hotline, or bring
them to your veterinarian.
Off Leash Issues
Dogs often times get out of the yard off leash. As an emergency
veterinarian, I commonly see dogs hit by cars and dog fights that result.
Fertilizers and Pesticides
No one likes weeds and we all want a bug free zone to enjoy our lunch
on the patio. We often use these products as a result. If an animal
ingests these products, they can become sick with gastrointestinal
signs, neurologic signs (tremors/seizures), or other serious clinical
signs. As with any ingestion of a toxic substance, find out the name of
the ingredients and contact animal poison control (888-426-4435), or
have your pet seen as soon as possible.
Swimming
Dogs commonly get issues secondary to swimming including ear
infections, swimmer’s tail (painful tail from overuse), and GI upset from
drinking chlorinated pool water. If your dog is going to go swimming,
make sure they have been taught how to get out of the pool and limit
their time in the water.
BBQs
If you’re like me, you love to give your pet a nibble of what you’re eating.
Be careful with what you share with your pet, as sometimes this is all it
takes to cause an issue to arise. Some common BBQ foods such as corn
on the cob and meat with bones can lead to gastrointestinal
obstruction, which requires surgery. Fruits with pits can be a hazard for
choking and also toxic in some cases. As a rule of thumb, almost any
food given to an animal can potentially lead to vomiting and diarrhea as
well.
At my hospital, Mount Laurel Animal Hospital, we are open 24 hours and
know that emergencies can happen at any time of the day or night. So,
its important to know your local 24-hour animal emergency hospital
and even put them in the contacts of your cell phone. Emergencies can
be very stressful but staying calm and being prepared can make all the
difference. We hope this article has helped you and that you have a
safe and fun-filled summer with your pet.
Rapid Response: Navigating a
Pet Emergency - Our Journey to
Mount Laurel Animal Hospital
Sunday evenings at our house are usually peaceful. The anticipation of a new week
blends seamlessly with the winding down of the weekend. However, last Sunday was
anything but typical. Around 10 PM, as I was preparing for bed, I let the dogs outside for
their nightly routine. The moment I stepped out the door, a heart-wrenching yelp of pain
shattered the stillness. It was a sound I had never heard before, and it came from my
beloved Zoey.
Racing outside, I found Zoey, my sweet and spirited dog,
dragging her hind leg. Panic surged through me as I
scooped her up and rushed to the car. Without hesitation,
we sped off to Mount Laurel Animal Hospital. Thankfully, I
managed to call ahead, and upon our arrival, we were
promptly met by a vet tech. Zoey, despite her pain,
managed to charm everyone with her gentle nature. I know
every pet owner says their dog is the sweetest, but with
Zoey, it's a universal truth.
The vet arrived quickly and, unsurprisingly, fell under Zoey's
spell too. Initial assessments suggested a possible
dislocation or sprain, but x-rays were necessary to confirm.
With pet insurance covering the costs, I could focus solely
on Zoey’s well-being rather than the financial implications.
To prepare for the x-rays, Zoey needed to be sedated. I laid with her on the floor, her
favorite blanket beneath us, and stroked her fur as she drifted off to sleep. It was a moment
of calm amidst the chaos, a reminder of the deep bond we share. Once the sedation took
effect, Zoey was whisked away for her x-rays and brought back to me shortly after.
The wait for the results seemed endless, but finally, the vet returned with an update.
Unfortunately, the x-rays were inconclusive. We were sent home with a promise of a followup
in the morning and a small arsenal of medications: anti-inflammatory, sedation, and pain
relief to keep Zoey comfortable.
The next morning brought clarity. Zoey had torn her
ACL,
a painful injury requiring a specialist’s intervention. The
recommendation was for her to see a surgeon for a
consultation. Zoey, with her usual spunk, seemed
unaware of the gravity of her injury. I knew keeping her
rested would be a challenge, but we were determined
to do whatever it took for her recovery.
A week later, Zoey is showing remarkable resilience.
Despite the medications and our best efforts to keep
her calm, her fiery spirit remains unquenched. She’s
doing well but still struggles with the concept of rest.
Yet, her progress is a testament to her strength and
the exceptional care she received at Mount Laurel
Animal Hospital.
This experience, though harrowing, reinforced the depth of my love for Zoey and my
commitment to her well-being. Emergencies like these remind us of the fragility of life
and the unspoken promises we make to our pets—to love, protect, and care for them no
matter the circumstances. Zoey’s journey to recovery is ongoing, but with each passing
day, she moves closer to reclaiming her playful, energetic self. And as always, we’ll be
right by her side, every step of the way.
