It’s Friday Eve —and it is almost 

the weekend; we must just get over 

the horizon. This weekend is going to 

be special because of the holiday this 

Sunday.

So, if you haven’t purchased a 

present for your old man, I suggest

This is the day we celebrate the 

man, the myth, the legend. 

I used to tell my dad he could only 

get one gift in June, because his wedding 

anniversary always fell on either

He would say, “There’s nothing 

wrong with giving someone two gifts.” 

I’d respond, “Yeah, but my bank account 

would be wrong, because why 

am I buying you two gifts?” 

For 24 years, my dad was my superman. 

My hero. There was nothing 

he couldn’t do — and if he couldn’t do 

something, he always found a way … 

after many trials and errors, but he 

found a way. It was easy for me to forget 

that as I grew older, so did my parents. 

It was easy for me to be naïve to 

the fact that my parents might not be 

here to celebrate all the accomplishments 

in my life. 

One Father’s Day I vividly remember 

was in 2017. Dad lit the grill in our 

backyard, and he and my mom started 

grilling. (FYI, my family and I love 

food, but that’s not a shock.) 

The five of us — my parents, myself, 

my little brother and my Poppy 

(my step-grandpa) — were all sitting 

on our back patio, just talking about 

any and everything. We talked and listened 

to stories about Poppy growing 

up in rural Mississippi. My dad was 

talking about him getting into trouble 

in the small town he grew up in (LOL). 

We lost my dad later that year, right 

before Thanksgiving and my brother’s 

birthday.

FUN FACT 

Unlike most Florida cities, 

Tallahassee isn’t generally 

associated with the beach. 

However, it’s only 20 miles 

away from the Gulf of 

Mexico and several popular 

beaches are within a couple 

of hours’ drive. 

Since that day, life has been … well, 

regretful. 

I regret not cherishing our porch 

talks. I regret not spending more time 

with him. I regret not getting him 

those two gifts every June. I regret the 

memories we won’t make together. 

I figured out how similar my dad 

and I are. I never realized my sense of 

humor, my problem-solving process, 

even my tendency to run over bottles, 

were so much like him. In a way, finding 

more similarities makes me feel 

like he’s still with me. 

I tell you all of this to say: Celebrate 

your father (or father figures) this 

weekend. Cherish the moments with 

them while you still have them. 

I would give almost anything to have 

one more Father’s Day with mine. 

Before I start crying, go and enjoy 

your weekend, and celebrate with your 

dads. See you next week gators!

hot spots 

Surrounded by a multitude of lakes, six rivers and located only 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, Tallahassee 

is a hot spot for fresh and saltwater fishing. Catch the big one at one of these regional hot spots and

LAKE PINEY Z 

A great location for fishing, whether from a boat or the bank, Lake Piney Z is 193-acre lake offering six fishing 

“fingers” that allow for lots of space for shoreline fishing. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, 

red-ear sunfish and channel catfish. For anglers interested in fishing by boat, Lake Piney Z offers a hand 

launch only, no gasoline motors, so kayaking or canoeing would be the best option. Located just minutes east 

of Downtown, this is easily one of the most picturesque fishing spots in town. Don’t be surprised to see fathers 

and grandfathers teaching the next generation of anglers how to cast, reel and land the big ones. One word of 

warning … be sure to keep your eyes peeled for alligators that like to sun themselves on the banks nearby. 

LAKE JACKSON 

Located just north of Tallahassee, Lake Jackson has been nationally known for its largemouth bass fishery. 

This lake has a high diversity of aquatic vegetation including hydrilla, eelgrass, and maiden cane, which are 

the best habitats to fish for bass. Although large (4,000 acres), Lake Jackson is shallow, with an average depth 

of about 7 feet and a maximum depth of 30 feet. A natural sinkhole, Lake Jackson periodically goes dry. There 

are five public boat ramps around the lake and one fish camp. When water levels are low, the best ramps to 

use on Lake Jackson are Jackson View Boat Landing, Sunset Landing and Crowder Road Landing. 

LAKE TALQUIN 

Located west of Tallahassee Lake Talquin is a manmade lake by the damming of the Oklockonee river. The 

10,000-acre lake offers outstanding freshwater fishing including common species such as largemouth bass, 

striped bass, speckled perch, bream and catfish. For anglers who don’t have a boat, a small fishing dock is located 

at the River Bluff area, just west of the 650-foot boardwalk. The dock provides visitors excellent access 

to fishing from land. Lake Talquin is deep with an average depth of 15 feet and a maximum depth of 40 feet. 

There are 7 public boat ramps and 5 public fishing piers on the Leon County side of the lake (Hwy 20). On the 

Gadsden County side, there are 3 public boat ramps and 2 public fishing piers.

SALTWATER FISHING 

Located 30 minutes to the south is the fishing village of St. Mark’s at the mouth of Apalachee Bay and the open waters 

of the Gulf of Mexico. Fishermen from all over flock to this area for its prized flats fishing. While trout and redfish 

are the favorite of many locals, tarpon, mackerel and jacks are also in abundance in the shallow inshore waters. 

For those seeking thrills in deeper waters, grouper, snapper and mahi are waiting for you just a few miles offshore.
