Joint remarks by Co-Presidents Amico and Faletra
By Kathryn Amico and Ryan Faletra
Senior Class Co-President
Ryan Faletra
Good afternoon and congratulations to
our graduating class of 2024.
Watching us all grow from eighth grade
to now standing on this stage at our high
school graduation has been nothing short
of amazing. This surreal experience is a
testament to our perseverance and growth.
Take this moment to celebrate
yourselves. While some may see this as
just another event, it is much more than
that. Embrace every opportunity life
offers, appreciate the small things, look
forward to each new day, cherish the sun,
the wildlife, and the places you’ll see. You
never know when things might be taken
away.
I’ve always believed in the phrase,
“everything happens for a reason.” It
has been a source of comfort for me and
many others. I’d like us all to reflect on
this today. My Mimi once said, sometimes
we’ll quickly understand the reason
behind things, other times it may take a
long time, and sometimes we may never
know. This belief in a bigger plan can be
very reassuring.
With that in mind, I want to draw
everyone’s attention to the two empty
chairs on the right side. These chairs
are for our classmates and friends, Ella
O’Donnell and Jackson Frechette, who
were taken from us too soon. We honor
them today because they will always
be a part of the Peabody family and
our graduating class. We miss you, Ella
and Jackson, and you will always be
remembered.
Thank you.
Kathryn Amico
Good evening and welcome to the
Peabody Veterans Memorial High School
class of 2024 graduation ceremony.
I would like to thank Mayor
Betancourt, Doctor Vidala, Principal
Randall, Ms. Futa Bovio, Peabody
teachers, administrators, staff, and our
elected officials for celebrating with us
today. A big shout-out to my fellow class
officers, Ryan, Kira, and Elijah, and to Mr.
Donovan and Ms. McCord for being the
best team I could ask for.
Thank you to my family. To my mom,
who taught me that life is too short not to
be happy and that there is great strength
in being kind. To my dad, who showed me
how to stand up for myself and for others.
And to my not-so-little brother Joey, who
I love very much, even though I don’t
always show it. I also want to thank my
family and friends who are here today,
STAFF PHOTO | EMMA FRINGUELLI
Co-presidents Ryan Faletra and Kathryn Amico welcome their class and the crowd to graduation.
those who are here in spirit, and my four
beautiful grandparents who are in heaven
and have the best seat in the house. I
would not be who I am today without each
and every one of you.
Now, the person I am today has many
roles and responsibilities. I’m honored
to be class president, captain of the girls’
lacrosse team, president of DECA, and
in the top 10% of our class academically.
After tonight, these titles will have the
prefix “former,” but that is not how I wish
to be solely remembered by the class of
2024.
The mistakes we’ve made and the
opinions of others do not define us. The
awards we achieved and the titles we were
given do not solely define us either. What
defines us are the lessons we’ve learned
from the bad and the self-discovery from
the good, which build our character. As we
move on to our future adventures, we must
carry with us the best parts of ourselves:
our perseverance, our leadership, our
kindness, and what we love.
Remember, we are all experiencing
this moment for the first time. Try not to
spend it wondering why you feel or don’t
feel a certain way. You are going to want
to remember this. In the words of Taylor
Swift, “Hold on to the memories, they will
hold on to you.”
Class of 2024, our transition after
high school will be one of the most
monumental moments of our lives. It will
be a big change, but it is not the first and
it will not be the last. As the Barbie movie
reminded us, “That’s life. It’s all change.”
Do not fear change, for our world needs
quite a bit of it. Strive to be the best
version of yourselves and live a life you
are proud of. Be kind to others and allow
yourself the grace to be kind to yourself.
Thank you.
Now, please welcome the principal of
Peabody Veterans Memorial High School,
Ms. Brooke Brandle.
Congratulations!
CLASS OF 2024
Graduation is an exciting time. It marks both an ending and a beginning;
warm memories from the past and BIG dreams for the future.
May all your dreams come true!
ST. JOHN’S PREP 2024
St. John’s Prep graduates 268
St. John’s Preparatory School
held its 114th Commencement
exercises as Head of School
Edward P. Hardiman, Ph.D. P’19
’21 ’26 conferred diplomas upon
268 seniors during an outdoor
ceremony held on the School’s
campus, including 7 from
Lynnfield. The gathering struck a
stirring chord of resilience given
that this year’s seniors began
high school at the height of the
COVID-19 calamity, a pall that
shrouded their first 16 months of
high school with wide-ranging
effects.
Over the course of the one
hour, 54-minute program, a
theme emerged regarding the
Class of 2024’s unique livedexperience
and how passing
through that crucible has
endowed graduates with great
responsibility. Indeed, the story
of the Class of 2024—which
began as masked and distanced
freshmen in 2020, unable to
participate in the first-day
campus procession which should
have served as a bookend for
the one that proudly closed
their Prep experience today—is
most meaningful in how it has
ended rather than its unthinkable
beginning.
In his remarks to graduates,
delivered under cloudy skies
with the temperature touching
57 degrees, Dr. Hardiman
implored graduates to harness
the inner strength of their lived
experience and, in the spirit of
Pope Francis’s 2020 encyclical
Fratelli Tutti, to accept God’s call
to “love others, build others up
and embrace all people” without
exception.
“Your journey through SJP
has not been easy,” Hardiman
acknowledged. “You are going to
leave this campus and encounter
many questions to which there
are no clear answers. You are
going to encounter situations
in which you feel you are not
prepared and you’re going
to doubt yourself. In these
moments, remember who you are
and who you’ve become. Class
of 2024: It has been an honor to
come to know you. Never forget,
even in those most challenging
times, that you can do hard
things, that we believe in you,
that we pray for you, and that we
love you.”
The student-selected keynote
speaker was Declan Foley
’11, a member of the School
Counseling department. He
delivered a poised, soulful
address that sparked a 43-second
standing ovation. Foley
impressed upon the graduates
his sincere belief that much
depended upon their authentic
commitment to helping humanity,
and he conveyed his assurance
that they were up to the task.
“As a school counselor, I’m
not as interested in what you do
as I am in who you are, and how
you treat those in your life,” said
Foley. “I encourage each of you
to love openly and deeply, to
listen charitably despite difficult
circumstances or perspectives,
and to live in a way that serves
both yourself and others. So, as
you encounter a new series of
firsts [as graduates], I encourage
you to consider: What will come
to mind when people say your
name?
“I think you all hear well
because of the sheer volume
of information you have to
consume [as members of this
generation], but the world needs
more listeners,” he continued.
“If hearing is the biological
process of perceiving sound,
listening is the act of paying
attention to a message in order
to deeply understand it. You are
in a remarkable position to be
graduating from this place (and)
there is a very real need for the
people you are growing up to
be. I am confident you will carve
out 268 different ways in which
to stand on this community’s
shoulders and make us all
proud.”
PHOTO | PAULA MULLER
Graduates line up to start the commencement ceremony at St. John’s Prep.
Fully 55% of Prep graduating
seniors were members of the
National Honor Society, while
13 were National Merit Scholarcommended
students and two—
Marblehead’s Elliot Adams and
Hamilton’s Innes Boesch—were
NMS Finalists. There were 32
legacy graduates, meaning their
father, grandfather, and/or great
grandfather also graduated from
the Prep. A remarkable 37 Eagles
student-athletes signed national
letters of intent to continue their
sports careers in college.
In all, this year’s seniors
represented 44 cities and towns
across the Commonwealth,
including as far south as
Medford, as far west as
Tyngsborough, and as far
north as Amesbury. Five were
international students while
another 13 commuted from
10 cities and towns in New
Hampshire.
Daniel Kane of Marblehead,
who is headed to Tufts
University, gave the Valedictory
address. He urged his classmates
to avoid living life by any
preconceived outline or to-do
list. Bound for Tufts University,
he reflected, “I’ve come to
realize that life can’t be planned,
and the more I try to plan, the
more disappointed I find myself
in surprises. No outline is
entirely ‘right,’ so I urge all of us
to live openly. I can’t speak (to)
what the next four years of my
life will look like, let alone the
rest of it. But isn’t that exciting?
As [Fine Arts Department Chair
Alicia] Greenwood says, ‘the
constant flux of life and the
spontaneous motion from one
moment to another is what
makes each individual moment
distinctly beautiful.”
College acceptances for the
class included four Ivy League
schools and two schools in
the UMass system as well as
Amherst College, Berklee
College of Music, Georgetown,
Duke, the University of Notre
Dame, Purdue University,
Ohio State University, Tufts
University, College of the Holy
Cross, Northeastern University,
NYU, Villanova, three schools
in Colorado, five technical or
aeronautical institutes, and
37 other schools throughout
New England among 110 total
institutions to date.
Graduating Eagles will fly
away to locales as far west
as Southern California, as far
north as Canada, as far south
as Texas, and as far east as
Orono, Maine, along with many
states in between, including
Alabama, Arizona, Colorado,
Florida, Illinois, Louisiana,
Mississippi, Michigan,
Montana, Pennsylvania, and
South Carolina, among others.
A number of colleges and
universities nationwide have
extended their deposit deadlines
to June 1, so many seniors across
the country, including a number
at the Prep, have not selected the
college of their choice.
Bishop Fenwick graduates 108
PEABODY — The afternoon’s clouds parted and
the sun shone down on Bishop Fenwick’s Donaldson
Field as the high school celebrated its graduating
class.
The 108 graduates marched onto the turf to their
seats as a band composed of both alumni and current
students played “Pomp and Circumstance.”
After an invocation by Fr. Michele Benetti, Class
President Helene Phelan took to the podium. Phelan
thanked all of Fenwick’s staff, from administration
to facilities. She reminded her fellow graduates to
be thankful for the people in their lives who helped
them reach this milestone.
“Let’s have a grateful graduation, Fenwick,”
Phelan said. “We’ve come a long way, and let’s not
forget to take a step back and remember the people
who got us here.”
Salutatorian James Missett described the mixed
emotions the commencement gave him. He said that
while he is eager for the next chapter of his life, he
knows he will miss his high-school experience.
“On one hand, it’s sad to move on from a place
where we have spent the past four years, but at the
same time, it’s time to leave and we can feel happy
about what we have accomplished,” Missett said.
Following a rendition of Billy Joel’s “Vienna”
by the Fenwick Concert Choir, the John J. Meehan
Service Award and Bishop Benedict Joseph Fenwick
Awards were presented. Teacher Shelley Schmeck
received the Meehan Service Award for her
exemplary service to Bishop Fenwick. Phelan and
fellow graduate Luke Connolly were presented with
the Fenwick Awards for being good examples of the
virtues the school represents.
Valedictorian Cecilia Kay then took the stage
to address her peers. Kay took the opportunity to
recognize and thank her many family members in
attendance. She also thanked Fenwick teachers and
staff by telling anecdotes about her fondest memories
of them.
“Mr. (David) Dugan, you taught me the
importance of community with your constant
involvement in the lives of the students… Your
loyalty to the dress code is unwavering, yet very
frustrating,” Kay joked. “Don’t worry, I promise I
am not wearing a hoodie under this gown.”
Kay alluded to her relationship with God on
multiple occasions, and credited Bishop Fenwick
with solidifying her religious beliefs. She named the
COVID-19 pandemic and the MIAA disciplinary
sanctions on the school as challenges her class
persevered through.
Each student then took to the stage to receive
their diplomas, but they were also given something
else. As a Fenwick tradition, every graduate takes a
sunflower to honor St. Julie Billiart, the founder of
the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
“St. Julie encouraged her sisters to be always
turned toward the good God, just as the sunflower
turns toward the sun,” the commencement’s
pamphlet reads.
Once Dugan gave his final address to the
graduates, which centered around gratitude, familiar
routines and far-off realities, and promise, the seniors
gathered in a circle and joyfully threw their caps.
Virtual Peabody school has in-person graduation
By Richelle Melad
Weekly News Staff
Parents, spectators, and school
and city officials filled the Black Box
Theater to celebrate the 23 students
who graduated from the district’s
Personalized Remote Education
Program this year.
State Rep. Tom Walsh, Salutatorian
Brianna Tejeda, P.R.E.P. math and
science teacher Tracy Butler, digital
media teacher Erika Sandstrom, and
P.R.E.P. Executive Director Dr. Chris
Lord spoke at the event, where the
program’s largest graduating class yet
was celebrated.
Dr. Lord talked about the program
and described how special and useful it
can be for students.
“Many of our students and families
find that virtual learning simply works
best for them,” Dr. Lord said. “Being
able to learn where you want and
when you want has provided many
opportunities for students and their
families. For example, just this year,
we’ve been able to provide dozens of
opportunities for our students to hold
down a full-time, 40-hour-a-week job
to support their families and still pursue
their high-school diploma.”
Butler praised the students for
graduating, despite having to manage
multiple responsibilities, and knowing
how to ask for help when needed.
“A lot of you are handling more than
the adults I know ever (have) in their
lives, plus you’re going to school, plus
you’re doing that with a brain that’s not
quite done developing,” Butler said.
“You had all kinds of things to manage.
You had to manage your own health,
child care, family situation, social
situations, immigration, learning a new
language, working full time, figuring
out who you are.”
Bianca Burt was the valedictorian
for the Class of 2024. The student of
the year was Anise Lopez and Anna
Carazas received the Seal of Biliteracy.
The other students who graduated
are Naomi Aquino, Jurgen Arapi,
Liam Burrows, Ellysa Carvalho, Skyla
