Djilpin Arts 

In a remote Northern Territory community, Djilpin Arts has, for nearly two decades, 

developed a vibrant and thriving cultural enterprise, offering activities rich in spirit, 

bringing healing to the community and linking traditional knowledge with modern 

ventures. 

At Djilpin Arts, visitors can engage with local people and artists to learn about traditional life and 

culture. The centre offers immersive experiences, including unique arts and cultural activities led 

by local elders, artists, and guides, as well as providing workshops, masterclasses, and tours 

designed to offer guests unique insights into First Nations culture. 

Djilpin Arts is represented as a tall, strong tree. It has deep roots holding strong the core cultural 

values of its community and people. These roots have grown a tall, powerful tree with a canopy of 

far reaching branches, where cultural expression meets community wellbeing to provide fruitful 

outcomes, year after year. A healthy tree produces flowers, fruits and seeds that support the 

regeneration process. In the Djilpin vision, these outcomes are active expressions of cultural 

knowledge and are regenerative, keeping the cultural water flowing.

About 

Gapu XI 

An exhibition premiering Djilpin Arts’ new limited edition print series. Celebrating the 11th print 

series in a 16-year collaboration with Basil Hall Editions, GAPU XI features works by senior and 

emerging artists working through Djilpin Arts in Wugularr (Beswick). 

Gapu (meaning water) depicts life and culture around the water ways of Wugularr (Beswick) and 

the ancestral homelands of the artists, including plants, animals, woven string bags, ceremonial 

dilly bags and Mimi spirits who share country. 

Mukuy Spirit Figures 

Mukuy are guardian spirits, traditionally playing 

an important role in protecting people who have 

passed away. Today there are many 

contemporary re-imaginings of Mukuy Spirit 

Figures. These finely crafted woven figures are 

Mukuy Spirits. 

The Mukuy belong in Yirritja country called 

Galanbirni. At night you might hear them playing 

the Didjeridu. The Mukuy travel around a lot and 

are often found in sacred places. They are 

mysterious, sometimes playful and sometimes 

cheeky characters, often referred to as Devil 

Devil. Mukuy figures tell the stories of country, 

culture and spiritual beliefs.

Mimi Spirit 

As the sun sets, the Mimi spirits emerge from the underworld, 

rising from the earth and hills to prepare the land for the next day. 

These diligent beings are responsible for keeping the country tidy, 

grooming bushes, feeding fish, and mending broken branches. 

They are the caretakers of the land, ensuring everything is in order. 

Tall and thin, the Mimi spirits resemble human-like stick figures. 

They are ethereal creatures, leaving no tracks as they move. 

Playful, magical, and fun, the Mimi spirits bring a unique energy to 

the land. 

Dragonfly 

These finely crafted hand-woven dragonflies are a cheerful 

reminder of the real dry season dragonflies. Signalling the dry 

season, dragonflies are ubiquitous with dry winds, cool nights and 

saying goodbye to the wet season. Each are unique, hand woven 

and coloured using natural bush dyes. 

Lorrkon 

The Lorrkon or bone pole coffin ceremony was the final ceremony 

in a sequence of mortuary rituals celebrated by the people of 

Arnhem Land. This ceremony involves the placing of the 

deceased’s bones into a hollow log until it slowly decayed over 

many years. The log is made from a termite hollowed Stringy bark 

tree (Eucalyptus tetradonta) and is decorated with totemic 

emblems.
