Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Westside Market, which has long enjoyed an iconic reputation 

on Broadway, in West Cape May. In fact, the barn red building 

has occupied that spot since 1902, when it was Smith’s Feed and Seed. 

The vibe: Although the exterior of the main building hasn’t changed 

much over the years, the inside has undergone a transformation under 

current owners, Chris and Kristen Angeli, who took over the reins from 

the Sluk family (hi, Pat!) two years ago. The butcher shop area remains, 

while the grocery department now includes all the necessities for making 

(or enhancing) your own meals, whether you’re a local, regular visitor 

or vacationer. We love the fact that there’s now a nice selection of 

spices. A life well lived needs lots of spicing, as Confucius should have 

said, but probably didn’t. 

The drinks: This wasn’t a sitdown meal, so there were no drinks on 

this occasion, other than the traditional English breakfast tea one of us 

slurped down back at the office. 

The food: The menu is stacked, but not in the overwhelming way 

you see in certain diners, where you’re greeted by a 24-page laminated 

abomination, featuring stock photography. No, the Westside menu is 

nicely organized and cleverly named, moving you from breakfast (the 

Broadway sandwich is a bountiful beast, while the Double Decker 

Pepper Wrecker is as delightful to chomp as it is to pronounce) to 

lunch (every kind of sandwich you could imagine, and then some) to 

to butcher selections (where there’s everything you need for the perfect 

outdoor BBQ in the perfect east coast seaside town). On this day, 

we selected the buffalo chicken cheesesteak, with the addition of fried 

onions, mushrooms and sweet peppers. Have that for lunch, and dinner 

becomes a moot point — it’s that filling. 

The takeaway: Westside Market is exactly the kind of establishment 

every small town should contain (in fact, there should be laws 

proclaiming this). A place where you can enjoy good eats, served by 

lovely staff (hi, Suzanne!) and lovely owners (hi Chris and Kristen!)

dance floor that’s often bopping. Feast upon brickoven 

pizza with draft beers. 

Congress Hall’s lounge got a very groovy, very sexy 

renovation. The bar was enlarged (and moved) and 

there are all sorts of seating nooks from which to 

enjoy great drinks and a great vibe. 

Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw 

bar, surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus 

outside tables for some great people-watching! 

Enjoy a fun and creative twist on an age-old favorite. 

From wild combinations, to classic ingredients, there’s 

plenty you’ll want to try when you visit. 

Serving great classic comfort food in a beautiful 

location with a historic vibe. Chef Sherry Sheldon 

created a menu that offers pub-style fare while 

embracing the farm-to-table concept. 

The Kulkowitz family’s latest culinary adventure. 

They’re bringing a new vibe to the Cape May dining 

scene with menu featuring local food with global 

flavors. 

As you’d expect of an Irish pub, this is the place to get

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

My friends Kevin and Dale recently 

updated me about a real-life 

natural drama in their yard. The 

Carolina Chickadees were fledging 

and the soon-to-be-abandoned 

cavity in the basketball pole was being eyed 

covetously by the House Wren that had enjoyed 

tenancy in past years. Both chickadees and 

wrens are cavity nesters and chickadees, as 

year-round residents, get first dibs. But this 

wren chose to kill the last chickadee in the cavity 

to accelerate the process. 

To the male House Wren’s thinking, discarding 

the eggs and killing the nestlings of rival 

cavity nesters is just good survival strategy. The 

tiny wrens are best known for their loud bubbly 

song. This and their dietary focus on insects 

and their eggs make them generally welcome 

backyard birds and many homeowners put up 

wren boxes to attract the birds. 

The wrens have been known to nest in all 

manners of natural and manmade structures 

from open mail boxes to paper bags. I once saw 

a photo of a wren whose paper bag nest was 

seated atop a box of dynamite in a construction 

shed. 

The planet’s 85 wren species are mostly 

New World. Only one breeds in Europe — called, 

simply “wren.” In Cape May we also host the 

larger, ruddier Carolina Wren and Marsh Wren. 

Winter Wren, which resembles a crop-tailed 

House Wren, is a winter resident. As for the 

Carolina Chickadees, they managed to get off 

five young. The breeding season was a success. 

Whatever our personal feelings regarding the 

nesting strategy of wrens, our human standards 

have no standing in the natural world. Most 

bird species produce multiple sets of young 

in hopes of raising one or two who will carry 

the genes forward. But once chickadees reach 

adulthood, their chances of survival are high. In 

winter, the birds form the core of feeding flocks, 

whose sophisticated inter-flock warning system 

relays information about incoming predators. 

Information relating to the type of predator 

and the level of danger is encoded in the volume, 

number and rapidity of the dee notes in the 

chicka-dee-dee. A nine-dee means trouble is on 

the way. A high-pitched zee means “freeze.” 

In case readers are confused about my use 

of the name Carolina Chickadee... that’s what 

we grow here. The closely related and very 

similar Black-capped Chickadee nests farther 

north. The ranges of the two chickadee species 

abut around Philadelphia and Princeton. How 

do you tell them apart? Trust the range map in 

your field guide. Or just listen. Black capped 

Chickadee whistles See-bee. Carolina says it 

twice... See-bee-see-bay.

Does bustin’ make you feel good? 

Let’s talk about the latest installment 

in what has become a 40-year 

franchise! It’s hard to believe that 

the first Ghostbusters came out in 

1984 — until you watch it again and see 

some of those graphics. Ouch! No, no, for 

the time they were great. Ivan Reitman, who 

passed away in 2022, directed and pretty 

much owned the beginning of the franchise. 

The first film had a sequel, and it did 

relatively well. Not as good as the original, 

but we say that a lot about movies. After 

that, the movie gave way to video games, 

comic books and animated shows. So it 

never really goes away. 

In 2016, there is a reimagining with an 

all-female cast. The movie did poorly at the 

box office, so some think it bombed. But 

critics praised it, even though audiences 

were not as impressed. The gadgets were 

cooler, the fight scenes impressive. And 

what can I say? Melissa McCarthy is growing 

on me over time. Leslie Jones is already

a favorite. And the SNL cast of Kristen Wiig 

and Kate McKinnon are always fun. 

For me, the best movie in the franchise 

is the 2021 offering, Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

and moving story, mostly thanks to Jason 

Reitman, Ivan’s son. He is one of my favorite 

storytellers in film today, and he directed 

the 2021 film. 

The new film is Ghostbusters: Frozen 

Empire. It’s fun, as any offering in the franchise 

should be. The original guys are back. 

Paul Rudd is in the mix again and, as she 

was in the 2021 film, Mckenna Grace plays 

Phoebe, the granddaughter of the original 

Harold Ramis character, Dr Egon Spengler. 

This new film is fun. It’s exactly what 

a Ghostbusters movie should be. Ghoulish 

forces trying to destroy Manhattan — this 

time with a deep freeze — and the team 

getting together to figure out how to shut 

the madness down. Critics are not loving on 

Frozen Empire. 

The 2021 film featured elevated storytelling, 

and this one is the story you expect. 

The original cast from 1984 is outstanding 

but getting older, and they need to rely less 

on them. Frozen Empire is a hit — already 

making enough money to ensure that there 

will be more. Hey, bustin’ makes us feel 

good, but now is the time for the storyline 

to evolve and make sure that good feeling 

doesn’t ghost the adoring fans.

One of my favorite memories of my 

father is the time my sister’s date 

arrived and beeped the horn. My 

father came out onto the porch and 

stood silently, hands on hips, until 

the boy realized his mistake and came to the 

door to call for her properly. Better than any 

lecture, this small moment reminded his five 

kids, boys and girls, that we both deserved 

and should demonstrate respect. 

Good fathers also deserve respect, which 

is why Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, 

Washington, first lobbied for an official 

Father’s Day in 1909. Dodd, raised along with 

five siblings by her widowed father, prompted 

Washington State to celebrate Father’s Day in 

1910, but it wasn’t until she was 90, in 1972, 

that President Nixon officially designated the 

third Sunday in June. 

Cape May is a great place to celebrate 

fathers. Does dad have a green thumb? Take 

him on the Gardens of Cape May Tour on 

June 15. The Emlen Physick Estate gardens 

are included, and the Estate will host venfrom 

10:45am to 5:00pm. Lunch is included 

at Cape Square Kitchen & Craft. Ages 21 and

the Military Timeline Weekend at Historic 

Cold Spring Village, June 15 and 16. Tickets

trust. I say trust is earned and our job as parents 

is to be vigilant. I hate this. Surely there 

is a path that builds trust and lets me sleep at

upfront. Educate her about the fact that there 

are bad actors out there and it is your job as 

parents to monitor those situations. As she

My 14-year-old granddaughter dog sat 

for me while I was away. I wanted to treat her 

above what I paid her. I narrowed the choices 

to fun restaurants like the Rusty Nail or Harry’s. 

I texted her five days ago and she still has 

not answered. Yesterday I called and she didn’t 

pick up or return my call. I am hurt and, above 

all, I’m angry with her mother for raising such 

an inconsiderate child. Her mother would have 

never gotten away with treating anyone so 

rudely, let alone a grandmother. When I talked 

to my daughter about it, she brushed it off 

with the wide sweep of, “She’s 14. What do you 

expect?” What do I expect? To be treated with 

civility and respect. What is the next step? —

The next step is to find someone else to pet 

sit. Or give her the job, since it seems she did 

the job well, but keep it as a business arrangement. 

Emotionally, put your granddaughter in 

the deep freeze for a while. Find someone else 

worthy of your generosity and go to lunch with 

them. See what happens in the coming days, 

but the best approach is to distance yourself.

She is a Sato and Basenji mix. Once comfortable,

for petting. She loves running around the yard, 

but always returns to her human for reassurance. 

Marina lived with children, but would 

need a slow introduction to other pets. 

DORY is an adult female Terrier looking 

for her forever home. She is house-trained, 

up-to-date on all her vaccinations and spayed. 

She would do well in a home with other dogs 

and children. Dory is affectionate, playful and

FERN was brought to the shelter when her 

owner became too sick to care for her. This
