Marblehead High celebrates the Class of 2024 

MARBLEHEAD — Cloudy skies over 

Piper Field didn’t dampen the mood on Friday 

May 31 as family, friends, and faculty bid 

farewell to Marblehead High School’s Class of 

2024 at Piper Field. 

This year’s cohort of 216 graduating 

seniors were led into the ceremony by their 

teachers, school staff, administrators, and 

members of the town’s School Committee 

members. Collectively they crossed 

the giant red “M” midfield to the sound 

of commencement standby “Pomp and 

Circumstance,” performed by members of the 

high school’s band. 

Senior Shakayla Baxter presented the 

welcome address to the class. 

“Remember to value others, recognize 

injustices, and do our part to make this world a 

better place for all,” Baxter said to her fellow 

classmates. 

Classmate Thomas Franklin led those 

gathered in a recitation of the Pledge of 

Allegiance and, during the evening ceremony 

the school concert choir treated those in 

attendance to musical interludes including 

their renditions of Abba’s “Slipping Through 

My Fingers” and Carole King’s “You’ve Got 

a Friend.” 

Valedictorian Kate Twomey said that for 

the rest of the graduates’ lives, they will be 

connected by their time at Marblehead High 

and the moments they shared together. 

“I believe that each of us will take away 

from our time here whenever we need to,” 

Twomey said. “Those lessons will help us 

all succeed, whatever endeavor we embark 

on next. I’m so proud of everything we’ve 

accomplished thus far and can’t wait to see all 

that is yet to come.”

Interim Superintendent Theresa 

McGuinness encouraged the seniors not to 

lose touch with their own feelings as they 

move forward to the next steps in their lives, 

educations, and careers. 

“Be grateful for who you are, and message 

yourself from time to time with this phrase: 

‘I do not need other people’s approval to 

love myself fully, because you are enough,’” 

McGuinness said as she closed her remarks. 

After McGuinness spoke, those gathered 

observed an emotional moment of silence for 

Sophia Smith, who would have among their 

ranks but for her tragic passing. Smith died in 

2018 following a battle with a rare brain tumor. 

Class Salutatorian and President Clara 

Donovan thanked all of the educators she and 

her classmates encountered throughout their 

four years at Marblehead High. 

“The young adults that each of us has 

become and the achievements we have made 

are truly remarkable. But we wouldn’t have 

grown in such ways without the guidance of 

Marblehead’s amazing teachers,” Donovan 

said. 

Senior Class Vice President Emily Tauro 

also announced that the Class of 2024’s 

senior gift will be additions to the popular 

outdoor gathering space in the school’s rear 

courtyard. Tauro said the new tables the 

seniors are donating will be “longer-lasting 

and sustainable.” 

“The outdoor courtyard holds much space 

that we hope to make lively, as we believe that 

it is a beautiful area and want to make sure we 

are maintaining it to its very best,” Tauro said.

Senior Class President 

Clara Simmons Donovan: ‘We are blessed 

to live in a town that values education’ 

A member of the class of 2024 is no 

longer with us. Sophia Smith passed away 

in 2018. She would have been graduating 

with us today. We would like you to join 

us in a moment of silence for Sophia 

Smith. Thank you. My name is Clara 

Donovan. It’s an honor to stand before 

you today as a member of the class of 

2024 and as your class president. I want to 

express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone 

who has made this day in the past four 

years so incredible. Mr. Kowalski, Ms. 

McGrail, and my fellow officers, Emily, 

Gwen, and Avery, none of this could have 

happened without you. I have the pleasure 

of speaking again later in the program, so 

I promise I’ll keep this short and sweet. 

Thank you for all coming today. It’s 

an honor to be on the field, luckily not 

in the gym, and thank goodness not 

driving around the circle to pick up our 

diplomas. Marblehead is a special place, 

and we are blessed to live in a town that 

values education and encourages us to 

find and explore our passions. Whether 

it’s the arts, athletics, or service to the 

community, think about how much we’ve 

accomplished as a class. The football and 

hockey state championships at TD and 

Gillette, the production of the movie, 

Drama Fest Awards for the original play, 

It’s About Pirates and Nothing Else, and 

of course, Draining the Swamp During 

Powder Puff. The talent in our class is 

amazing. I’m so glad I got to share the 

past four years with all the students sitting 

on this field who fostered an environment 

where everyone could be themselves. 

I’m excited to see what this class does 

next. I want to thank you all again for 

being part of this special day.

Distinct Marblehead flavor to St. John’s Prep graduation 

DANVERS — 32 

students from Marblehead 

were among the 268 

graduated from St. John’s 

Preparatory School this 

year. This year, both the 

senior-class speaker, Graham 

Kramer, and valedictorian, 

David Kane, were from 

Marblehead. 

Kramer, who is headed 

for Boston College, spoke 

at the ceremony about how 

the Class of 2024 started its 

high-school journey at the 

height of the COVID-19 

pandemic, in “what could 

have been the most confusing 

time ever.” Students were 

only able to see each other 

face-to-face starting in their 

sophomore year. 

“Although distance 

was enforced, somehow 

we became closer as a 

class while simultaneously 

being forced to stay apart,” 

Kramer said in his speech. 

“During my first year at SJP, 

even though I couldn’t see 

any faces, I saw kindness, 

I saw nervousness, and I 

saw commitment all in the 

eyes of my classmates from 

showing up to those early 

Zoom meetings to making 

sure masks were on straight 

for games.” 

After discussing the “bad” 

— COVID-19 — Kramer 

also talked about the “good,” 

highlighting the accolades 

of fellow classmates on the 

field, court, and stage. 

“Throughout our time 

at the Prep, we have 

won dozens of state 

championships, received 

rewards and accolades 

for fine arts, dominated in 

robotics, and so much more,” 

Kramer said. 

He added other 

achievements, such as 

students winning a stockmarket 

game, performing a 

production of “The Addams 

Family,” and placing second 

in an intramural basketball 

league. 

In his valedictory address, 

Kane urged his classmates 

to avoid living life by any 

preconceived outline or 

to-do list. Bound for Tufts 

University, he reflected, 

“I’ve come to realize that 

life can’t be planned, and the 

more I try to plan, the more 

disappointed I find myself 

in surprises. No outline is 

entirely ‘right,’ so I urge all 

of us to live openly. I can’t 

speak (to) what the next four 

years of my life will look 

like, let alone the rest of it. 

But isn’t that exciting? As 

[Fine Arts Department Chair 

Alicia] Greenwood says, ‘the 

constant flux of life and the 

spontaneous motion from 

one moment to another is 

what makes each individual 

moment distinctly beautiful.”
