Crafting a Contemporary Canvas: Majid
Alyousef’s Calligraphic Odyssey
MAJID
ALYOUSEF
In the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary art, there exists a
realm where tradition meets innovation, where ancient script transcends
into abstract form, and where creativity knows no bounds.
At the heart of this fusion stands Majid Alyousef, a visionary calligraphy
artist whose journey has carved a distinctive mark in the annals
of artistic expression.
8 June 2024 www.magzoid.com

Born at the confluence of Saudi and Iraqi heritage,
Alyousef’s artistic odyssey began amidst the cultural
tapestry of Basra, where the seeds of his passion
were sown at a tender age. With no formal instruction
to guide him, he embarked on a solitary quest for mastery,
immersing himself in the intricate strokes of calligraphy
through the wisdom of old masters and the pages of timeless
tomes.
Alyousef’s ascent to artistic prominence is a testament to
his unwavering dedication and boundless creativity. From
the corridors of traditional calligraphy to the avant-garde
realms of abstraction, he has charted a course uniquely his
own, defying convention and redefining the boundaries of
his craft.
Central to Alyousef’s artistic philosophy is the concept
of Calligraforms, a radical movement he co - founded that
breathes new life into the ancient art of calligraphy. Through
Calligraforms, he unveils a kaleidoscope of abstract perspectives,
where Arabic letters transcend their linguistic
confines to communicate a universal language of beauty,
form, and balance.
Alyousef’s artistic repertoire spans the gamut of mediums
and motifs, from the intricate elegance of classical forms to
the bold experimentation of contemporary abstraction. His
work graces the walls of prestigious galleries and institutions
worldwide, captivating audiences with its fusion of classical
beauty and avant-garde spirit.
One of Alyousef’s most notable achievements is his contribution to the
Room of the Emirates at the UN building in Geneva, where his wall art
installation stands as a testament to the power of art in diplomacy. His
creative vision has also left an indelible mark on cultural landmarks such
as The Horse Museum in Saudi Arabia and The Museum of Islamic Art
in Doha.
Beyond the confines of exhibition halls, Alyousef’s influence extends
into the realm of education, where he imparts his wisdom to aspiring
artists and designers. His teaching endeavors have spanned across art
institutions, universities, and colleges, nurturing the next generation of
creative minds.
Alyousef’s artistic journey is not merely a personal odyssey but a
cultural pilgrimage, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation,
heritage and modernity. His work is not bound by geographic borders
but transcends cultural divides, speaking a language that resonates with
audiences around the globe.
As we immerse ourselves in the intricate tapestry of Majid Alyousef’s
artistic universe, we are reminded of the transformative power of creativity
to transcend boundaries and unite humanity in the pursuit of beauty
and expression. In a world where precision meets passion, Alyousef
stands as a beacon of inspiration, illuminating the path for generations
of artists to come.
SPECIAL DAY
CELEBRATING THE ARTISTRY OF GLOBAL WIND DAY:
NATURE’S MUSE IN MOTION
As June unfurls its warm embrace,
the world gears up to celebrate an
elemental force that shapes landscapes,
powers civilizations and
whispers secrets through rustling leaves.
Global Wind Day, observed annually on
June 15th, is not just a commemoration of
the wind’s practical significance but a tribute
to its ethereal beauty and profound influence
on the human imagination. In this special
segment, we delve into the artistic manifestations
inspired by the winds that traverse
our planet, stirring creativity across cultures
and generations.
From ancient mythologies to modern art
installations, the wind has long captivated
human fascination. In Greek mythology,
Aeolus, the keeper of the winds, wielded
immense power over the elements, while
Chinese folklore speaks of Feng Po Po, the
goddess of wind, who danced across the
skies with grace and vigor. These narratives
reflect the profound respect and awe that
wind has commanded throughout history,
inspiring artists to render its intangible essence
into tangible forms.
Visual artists have sought to capture the
wind’s dynamic energy and fluidity through
various mediums. The Impressionists, with
their mastery of light and movement, depicted
windswept landscapes that evoke a
sense of motion and vitality. The iconic painting
“Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh is a
testament to the artist’s fascination with the
celestial dance of wind and stars, as swirling
brushstrokes convey the restless spirit of the
night sky.
In contemporary art, installations like
“Wind Walls” by Ned Kahn and “Wind Pavilion”
by artist Luke Jerram transform the
invisible currents of air into mesmerizing
sensory experiences. These immersive artworks
invite viewers to engage with the wind
on a visceral level, amplifying awareness of
its presence and power in our daily lives.
Literature, too, has been profoundly influenced
by the winds, serving as a metaphor
for change, transformation, and the passage
of time. Writers like Emily Dickinson and
Walt Whitman often drew inspiration from
the natural world, using the wind as a poetic
device to evoke emotions and explore
existential themes. In Dickinson’s poem “The
Wind Begun to rock the Grass,” the gentle
sway of grass in the breeze becomes a poignant
metaphor for resilience in the face of
adversity.
Music, with its ability to evoke mood and
emotion, has also embraced the wind as
a thematic motif. Composers like Claude
Debussy and Gustav Holst have composed
symphonic pieces that evoke the elemental
forces of nature, with swirling melodies and
cascading harmonies that mimic the ebb
and flow of the wind. In Debussy’s “Prelude
to the Afternoon of a Faun,” the flute’s lilting
melody conjures images of dappled sunlight
filtering through swaying trees, transporting
listeners to a dreamlike realm where time
seems to stand still.
On Global Wind Day, let us pause to reflect
on the beauty and power of this invisible
force that shapes our world and inspires artistic
expression across all mediums. Whether
through the stroke of a paintbrush, the
turn of a phrase, or the swell of a musical
note, artists continue to pay homage to the
wind’s timeless allure, reminding us of our
profound connection to the natural world.
As we celebrate Global Wind Day, may we
embrace the wind’s whispers as a source of
inspiration and renewal, allowing its gentle
caress to awaken our senses and ignite our
creativity. In doing so, we honor not only the
winds that sweep across the globe but also
the enduring legacy of artistic expression
that they inspire.
IS THERE BEAUTY BEHIND THE
MADNESS OF ABSTRACT ART?
Abstract art often evokes a whirlwind of reactions. To some, it appears as a chaotic jumble of
colors and shapes devoid of meaning or purpose. To others, it represents a profound expression
of emotion and thought, freed from the constraints of realism. Yet, amidst this seeming
chaos, one might wonder: Is there precision behind the madness of abstract art?
12 June 2024 www.magzoid.com

EDITORIAL
The answer is a resounding yes. While
abstract art may seem spontaneous
and unstructured at first glance, a
closer inspection reveals meticulous
attention to detail and an underlying precision
that guides its creation.
The Hidden Structure of Chaos
Abstract artists, despite their departure
from realistic representation, often employ
a sophisticated set of principles and techniques
to achieve their vision. These principles
can include balance, symmetry, proportion,
and rhythm—concepts deeply rooted in
the traditional disciplines of art. By manipulating
these elements with precision, artists
create a harmonious composition that resonates
with viewers on a subconscious level.
Consider the work of Piet Mondrian,
whose abstract compositions are celebrated
for their geometric precision. Mondrian’s
grids of vertical and horizontal lines, combined
with primary colors, may appear simple.
However, each element is meticulously
calculated to achieve a perfect balance,
demonstrating that even the most abstract
art can be grounded in mathematical precision.
The Role of Technique and Skill
Precision in abstract art is not limited to
geometric abstraction. Artists like Jackson
Pollock, known for his drip paintings, exhibit
a different kind of precision. Pollock’s technique,
which involved dripping and splattering
paint onto a canvas laid on the floor,
may seem haphazard. Yet, his movements
were controlled and deliberate, guided by
an intimate understanding of his materials
and methods. The resulting works possess
a dynamic yet balanced composition that is
far from accidental.
Furthermore, the precision of color theory
plays a crucial role in abstract art. Artists
carefully select and juxtapose colors to
evoke specific emotions and create visual
harmony. Wassily Kandinsky, a pioneer of
abstract art, believed in the spiritual and
emotional power of color. His compositions,
though abstract, were precisely designed
to stimulate viewers’ senses and emotions
through strategic color placement and interaction.
The Intersection of Intuition and Precision
The beauty of abstract art lies in its unique
intersection of intuition and precision. Artists
often begin with an intuitive idea or emotion
they wish to convey. Through the process of
creation, they apply precise techniques to
transform their abstract vision into a tangible
work of art. This delicate balance between
free expression and controlled execution is
what gives abstract art its compelling depth
and complexity.
Joan Miró, for instance, merged surrealist
automatism with meticulous control over
form and color. His works appear playful
and spontaneous, yet each element is carefully
positioned to create a cohesive and balanced
composition. This fusion of spontaneity
and precision invites viewers to explore
the intricate layers of meaning within his art.
Precision as a Path to Innovation
In the realm of abstract art, precision is
not a constraint but a pathway to innovation.
By mastering precise techniques, artists
push the boundaries of traditional art forms
and explore new dimensions of expression.
The discipline of precision enables them to
experiment with form, color, and composition
in ways that challenge conventional perceptions
of beauty.
Abstract art, therefore, is not devoid of
structure or purpose. Beneath its seemingly
chaotic surface lies a foundation of precision
that guides its creation. This precision,
whether through geometric exactness, controlled
SABIH
AHMED
on Ishara Art Foundation’s Vision and Collaborative Journey
with Gauri Gill for Sheher, Prakriti, Devi
In an enlightening conversation, Sabih Ahmed, Director of the Ishara Art
Foundation, delves into the intricacies and inspirations behind their latest
exhibition, “Sheher, Prakriti, Devi.” This exhibition, co-curated with acclaimed
artist Gauri Gill, weaves together themes of urbanity, nature, and
the divine, creating a tapestry that reflects the multifaceted interactions
between these realms. Ahmed shares insights on the collaborative process
with Gill, the conceptualization of the exhibition’s core themes, the
influence of strategic partnerships, and the careful selection of featured
artists. He also reflects on the intended impact of the exhibition on visitors
and the broader art community and envisions the future trajectory of such
innovative collaborations at Ishara. This interview offers a deeper understanding
of how “Sheher, Prakriti, Devi” not only challenges conventional
curatorial practices but also expands the boundaries of ecological and
artistic discourse.
20 June 2024 www.magzoid.com

Q. How did the collaborative process between
you and Gauri Gill develop for the
exhibition Sheher, Prakriti, Devi at Ishara
Art Foundation? Can you share any particular
challenges or breakthroughs you
experienced while curating together?
Sheher, Prakriti, Devi was less of a curatorial
collaboration between Gauri Gill and me,
than a dialogue. I had followed Gauri’s art
practice for several years and was always
in admiration of how she navigated different
forms of collaboration, from the Fields
of Sight series where she collaborated with
Warli artist Rajesh Vangad in making photographic
drawings since 2013, to an exhibition
she conceived in Mumbai in 2021 along
with her mother Vinnie Gill and Ladhki Devi.
She takes great care in giving due credit to
her collaborators, by acknowledging them
by name and ensuring they are compensated
financially. As she said in a recent talk
hosted at Ishara, “Too often, when we say
collaboration, we mean co-option.”
I was interested in exploring what a wider
canvas would look like if Ishara invited her
to curate an exhibition. Because of the power
that curation tends to suggest in terms
of institutional hierarchy, and for a curator
assuming a position where they wield the
power to include and exclude, the invitation
to Gauri was first met with some reluctance.
But as our conversations continued, we were
able to put those institutional moorings of the
curator aside to look at curating as a practice
of bringing practices into conversation.
This led to a year-long dialogue between
Gauri and myself, but also Gauri with several
other artists in South Asia and elsewhere….
Q. The exhibition title Sheher, Prakriti,
Devi suggests a blend of urban, nature,
and divine elements. How did you and
Gauri conceptualize these themes, and
how do they resonate with the works of
artists like Mrinalini Mukherjee and Chiara
Camoni?
The exhibition explores the tenuous relationship
that exists between the urban environment,
the natural environment, and the
sacred environment – a relationship that can
sometimes be harmonious, and at others violent.
This is exemplified by how cities are
often planned, with no regard for the habitat
of other life forms. Alternatively, we also see
how the natural environment finds its space
in built structures. We could well say that the
relationship is not so much about blending,
and instead about being porous. For Gauri,
that sense of porosity and an encroachment
of boundaries was important when developing
this exhibition. These are subjects that
Gauri’s art practice is deeply anchored in.
Her curation at Ishara is a testament to this
commitment.
The relationship between human, organic,
and divine is evoked in the installation
manuals for Mrinalini Mukherjee’s fabric
sculptures, in which, as Gauri writes in her
curatorial essay, “hemp and jute transform
magically into Devi, Naag, Pakshi, Adi Pushpa
and women on peacocks.” In Chiara Camoni’s
Tent (2023), similarly, “anthropomorphic
figures arise spontaneously through her
close communion with nature in the remote
rural area in Italy where she lives, and where
she walks through the forest each day.”
In both instances, it would be fair to say
that while these ideas can have a general
and abstract expression, Gauri’s curation
gives them very precise and culturally specific
undertones. And yet, as with all exhibitions
at Ishara, we always aspire to show
how particular experiences carry with them
diverse possibilities of imagining universal
conditions.
Q. The exhibition has received support
from various organizations like ZEISS
Vision and J. Safra Sarasin (Middle East)
Ltd. and logistical support from Vadehra
Art Gallery. How did these partnerships
influence the scope and execution of the
exhibition?
At Ishara, we are grateful for the different
kinds of support we receive - from artists, institutions,
the wider public, partners, and our
benefactors. That being said, we have been
discerning who we collaborate with and take
support from. To that end, we have done
our best to affiliate with organizations and
entities that share our values about art as a
vehicle for enriching cultural conversations
and widening horizons. The support from
ZEISS Vision, from J. Safra Sarasin (Middle
East), and Vadehra Art Gallery comes with
these shared values. There is a mutual trust
among our sponsors when it comes to exhibitions,
and our curation is never shaped
by the scope that patrons impose but rather
by the vision of the artists and curators we
work with.
Q. Could you elaborate on the criteria and
process for selecting the artists featured
in this exhibition? How do their diverse
practices and backgrounds contribute
to the overarching narrative of Sheher,
Prakriti, Devi?he scope and execution of
the exhibition?
Sheher, Prakriti, Devi grew out of Gauri’s
2021 eponymous exhibition in Mumbai.
Rather than seeing it as a curated show, that
exhibition intended to subvert practices of
inclusion and exclusion in curation based
ISHARA
on accepted notions of who is an artist and
whether they have received professional
training. Vinnie Gill and Ladhki Devi had not.
The show at Ishara extends this idea by inviting
other such artists to exhibit their work.
Gauri puts this wonderfully in her curatorial
text when she writes, “(e)ach of
these artists is someone whose work looks
at aspects of the city, of nature, and of the
sacred—and the many overlaps between
these categories—and whom I have been
drawn to for one reason or another. In my
view, many of the artists have also received
inadequate, if any, attention … They may be
lifelong homemakers, who have contributed
in other capacities unrecognized as ‘work’,
and so, are familiar with forms of exclusion,
but whose artistic labor has provided them
with profoundly vitalizing spaces of refuge
and solace.”
Q. What impact do you hope the exhibition
Sheher, Prakriti, Devi will have on
visitors and the broader art community?
Looking forward, how do you envision the
future of such collaborative exhibitions at
the Ishara Art Foundation?
In my view, Sheher, Prakriti, Devi marks
its relevance in at least three ways. Firstly,
to consider who we cohabit the world with.
And this includes various species of plants
and animals, alongside different communities
with diverse belief systems. Secondly,
the exhibition invites us to expand our definition
of ecology from a ‘natural’ environment
to an eco-system that comprises of social,
historical, technological, natural, and spiritual
domains entangled with one another. And
lastly, it is an exhibition that speculates the
future of art, not merely as a technological
narrative of materials and techniques but
as a widening field of practices from urban,
non-urban, domestic, and spiritual contexts.
We could see how whole-heartedly these
ideas were received by visitors that comprised
of people living in the UAE, as well as
those visiting from various parts of the world.
For Ishara, all of our exhibitions attempt to
test and develop ideas that artists and curators
are exploring. Non-profit foundations
such as ours often occupy a unique position
in this regard, that is neither a historical museum
nor a commercial gallery. This allows
us the scope to stage shows that are not yet
in the mainstream, and yet seem obvious
once they are done.
mode of transportation that speaks
to both practicality and artistry—the bicycle.
As June approaches, so does World Bicycle
Day, a celebration that not only honors the
humble two-wheeler but also underscores its
significance in fostering health, sustainability,
and community engagement.
Originating from a United Nations resolution
in 2018, World Bicycle Day recognizes
the bicycle as a sustainable and affordable
means of transportation, promoting health
and well-being, and fostering a culture of
creativity and social inclusion. It’s a day that
transcends boundaries, inviting people from
all walks of life to pedal towards a brighter,
more sustainable future.
But why would an art magazine dedicate
space to a day typically associated with
transportation and fitness? The answer lies
in the intrinsic connection between art and
the bicycle—a connection that goes beyond
mere functionality.
Art has long been intertwined with the bicycle,
both as a subject and a medium of
expression. From impressionist paintings
capturing leisurely rides through the countryside
to contemporary sculptures constructed
entirely from recycled bike parts,
the bicycle serves as a muse for countless
artists around the world.
Consider the work of Dutch artist Vincent
van Gogh, who immortalized the simple
beauty of rural life in his painting “The Red
Vineyard.” In this masterpiece, the vibrant
colors and dynamic brushstrokes evoke a
sense of movement and vitality, much like
the cyclists traversing the sun-drenched
fields.
Similarly, contemporary artists like Ai
Weiwei have used the bicycle as a symbol
of political activism and social change. Weiwei’s
installation piece “Forever Bicycles,”
composed of thousands of interconnected
bicycles, serves as a powerful commentary
on mass production, consumerism, and the
human experience in the modern world.
But art isn’t just about the finished product—it’s
about the process, the journey of
creation. And what better way to embark on
a creative journey than on the back of a bicycle?
The act of cycling itself can be a source
of inspiration, stimulating the mind and invigorating
the senses as one navigates through
city streets or explores untamed landscapes.
Many artists cite cycling as a source of
inspiration for their work, citing the rhythmic
motion of pedaling as a catalyst for creative
thinking. Whether it’s sketching en plein air
or jotting down ideas in a notebook while
resting at a scenic overlook, the bicycle provides
a unique opportunity for artists to connect
with their surroundings and capture the
essence of the world around them.
Moreover, the bicycle serves as a powerful
symbol of freedom and self-expression,
embodying the spirit of individualism and
adventure. Just as each stroke of the brush
or chisel is a reflection of the artist’s inner
world, so too is each turn of the pedal a manifestation
of the cyclist’s journey.
As we celebrate World Bicycle Day this
June, let us not only appreciate the practical
benefits of this timeless mode of transportation
but also embrace its profound artistic
significance. Let us recognize the bicycle as
more than just a means of getting from point
A to point B, but as a canvas for creativity, a
tool for social change, and a symbol of human
ingenuity.
So whether you’re an avid cyclist, a seasoned
artist, or simply someone who appreciates
the beauty of the world around you,
take a moment to hop on your bike, explore
your surroundings, and let the rhythmic
motion of pedaling inspire your creative
endeavors. After all, on World Bicycle Day,
the possibilities are as endless as the open
road.
MASTERING PRECISION:
THE EXQUISITE
CRAFTSMANSHIP OF
JEWELRY MAKING
In the realm of artistic endeavors, few crafts demand the level of precision and finesse
of jewelry making. Each piece, from the simplest band to the most elaborate
pendant, is a testament to the meticulous artistry and exacting standards of its
creator. In this editorial, we delve into the world of jewelry making, where precision
is not just a requirement but a revered tradition.
At the heart of jewelry-making lies the
marriage of creativity and precision.
Every curve, every facet, and every
setting is carefully calculated and
executed with the utmost attention to detail.
From the initial design sketches to the final
polishing, the journey of a piece of jewelry
is a testament to the dedication of the craftsmen
who bring it to life.
One of the most striking aspects of jewelry
making is the variety of techniques employed
to achieve precision. Whether it’s the
delicate art of filigree, the intricate work of
stone setting, or the precise measurements
required for soldering, each step in the process
demands a steady hand and a keen
eye for detail. Even the choice of materials,
from precious metals to gemstones, must be
made with precision to ensure the durability
and beauty of the final piece.
But precision in jewelry making goes beyond
technical skill; it is also a reflection of
craftsmanship and artistry. A skilled jeweler
not only possesses the ability to work with
precision tools but also the creativity to envision
and execute designs that captivate
and inspire. It is this combination of technical
prowess and artistic vision that elevates
jewelry-making to an art form.
26 June 2024 www.magzoid.com

Moreover, the importance of precision in
jewelry-making extends beyond aesthetics.
It is a matter of integrity and trust. Customers
entrust jewelers with their most precious
possessions, and it is the jeweler’s commitment
to precision that ensures the quality
and longevity of each piece. Whether it’s a
family heirloom passed down through generations
or a symbol of love and commitment
exchanged between partners, jewelry holds
immense sentimental value, and the precision
with which it is crafted is a testament
to the respect and care with which it is handled.
In an age where mass production and automation
have become the norm, the art of
jewelry making stands as a beacon of tradition
and craftsmanship. Each piece is a
labor of love, painstakingly crafted by skilled
artisans who understand the value of precision
in every cut, every polish, and every
setting. It is this dedication to excellence that
sets handmade jewelry apart and ensures
its enduring appeal.
EDITORIAL
The art of jewelry making is a celebration
of precision in craftsmanship. It is a testament
to the skill, creativity, and dedication
of artisans who strive for perfection in every
piece they create. From the smallest of details
to the grandest of designs, jewelry-making
is a true art form where precision reigns
supreme.
BRUSHSTROKES FROM THE PAST
BRUSHSTROKES FROM THE PAST:
DECIPHERING DALÍ’S SURREAL
MASTERPIECE
In the realm of art, certain brushstrokes echo through time, captivating generations with their
enigmatic allure. Salvador Dalí’s “The Persistence of Memory” stands as a pinnacle of Surrealist
expression, a canvas that transcends mere representation to unveil the depths of the
subconscious. With each stroke, Dalí beckons viewers into a dreamscape where time liquefies,
and reality dissolves into abstraction.
Dalí, a maestro of paradox, imbued
his work with a paradoxical blend
of precision and chaos. He wielded
his brush with what he called “the
most imperialist fury of precision,” yet his aim
was not to replicate reality but to distort it, to
“systematize confusion” and dismantle the
conventions of the world we perceive. In this
pursuit, he employed his “paranoiac-critical
method,” delving into self-induced hallucinations
to birth his art. Through this method,
Dalí traversed the thin veil between madness
and genius, proclaiming, “The difference
between a madman and me is that I am not
mad.”
Central to “The Persistence of Memory”
is the iconic melting watches, symbols of
temporal disintegration and the malleability
of existence. Dalí likened them to “the camembert
of time,” evoking a sense of decay
and impermanence. The watches, once solid
and unyielding, become limp and pliable,
defying the laws of physics in a desolate
landscape where reality unravels.
Ants swarm over one of the watches, emblematic
of decay and mortality. These tiny
insects, recurring motifs in Dalí’s oeuvre,
infuse the scene with a sense of impending
dissolution. The Catalan coast, Dalí’s homeland,
serves as the backdrop, its golden
cliffs a distant echo of familiarity amidst the
surreal tableau.
At the heart of the painting lies a grotesque
figure, part human, part otherworldly.
This amalgamation, resembling Dalí’s own
visage, merges with the landscape, blurring
the boundaries between self and environment.
It is a manifestation of the artist’s
psyche, a reflection of his inner turmoil and
fascination with the grotesque.
Beyond its initial creation, “The Persistence
of Memory” endures as a symbol
of Dalí’s enduring legacy. In subsequent
works such as “The Disintegration of the
Persistence of Memory,” Dalí revisits and reinterprets
his iconic motif in light of changing
times. The melting watch becomes a conduit
for exploring themes of atomic power and
existential angst, reflecting the anxieties of
a world on the brink of nuclear destruction.
“The Persistence of Memory” debuted at
the Julien Levy Gallery in 1932 before finding
its permanent home at the Museum of
Modern Art in New York. Since then, it has
become a touchstone of Surrealist art, inspiring
countless interpretations and serving
as a testament to the enduring power of the
subconscious.
In the annals of art history, Dalí’s brushstrokes
stand as a testament to the boundless
depths of human imagination. Through
his surreal visions, he invites us to question
the nature of reality, to embrace the chaos
that lies beneath the surface, and to find
beauty in the disintegration of the familiar.
BEHIND THE PRECISE
STROKES OF
CALLIGRAPHY
In the world of art, precision stands as an ever-present sentinel, guarding the gates to excellence.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the intricate dance of calligraphy, where every
stroke carries the weight of centuries of tradition and craftsmanship. Behind the graceful
curves and precise angles of each letter lies a narrative of discipline, patience, and unwavering
Calligraphy, with its roots deeply
embedded in cultures across the
Western scripts, every stroke is imbued with
meaning, every line a reflection of the artist’s
At the heart of calligraphy lies the essence
Each stroke must be executed with meticulous
EXPLORING IDENTITY THROUGH ART AND FASHION
Dive into the captivating fusion of fashion, art, and identity with LOEWE’s Spring/Summer 2024/25
collection. In a spellbinding narrative captured by the esteemed photographer David Sims, this
campaign delves deep into the multifaceted essence of identity through the lens of performance.
66 June 2024 www.magzoid.com

Inspired by the avant-garde spirit of
artist Lynda Benglis, whose revolutionary
work challenged conventional notions
of form and materiality, LOEWE’s
campaign pays homage to her legacy.
Featuring the brand’s female Brand
Ambassadors – Taylor Russell, Yang
Mi, and Lim Ji - Yeon – the campaign
serves as a dynamic reinterpretation of
vignettes that echo the artist’s confrontational
iconography.
Dynamic arrangements emphasize
the exploration of identity and
performance.
adorn the looks, forging a tangible link between
her artistic vision and LOEWE’s fashion
pieces. The campaign’s imagery captures
the pragmatic yet unconventional spirit
of the season, with elongated silhouettes,
textural knits, draped dresses, and twisted
daywear taking center stage.
Among the campaign’s most striking
images is Taylor Russell holding a feather
mask, a direct homage to a famous Benglis
advertisement. This layered approach to
referencing art and identity underscores the
campaign’s innovative narrative.
Each image exudes a performative
quality, where identity formation is not
merely portrayed but enacted. Taylor
Russell, Yang Mi, and Lim Ji-Yeon embody
different facets of Benglis’s persona,
from her moments in the studio
Y/Project’s
Spring/Summer
2024/25 Collection
In a whirlwind of unconventional creativity, Y/Project’s
latest collection for Spring/Summer 2024/25
challenges the norms of fashion with a bold exploration
of texture and form. Inspired by the architectural
wonders of Bruges, Belgium, creative director Glenn
Martens presents a sartorial narrative that transcends
traditional boundaries, offering a glimpse
into a world where garments are not merely clothes,
but living, breathing entities with stories to tell.
The collection unfolds like a visual symphony
of chaos and elegance, where garments appear
to have been caught in the tumultuous dance of a
rogue washing machine. From the vortex-like spirals
adorning T-shirts to the crumpled, wrinkled fabrics
cascading in layers of denim and cotton, each piece
exudes an air of raw authenticity.
Martens’ masterful manipulation of shapes and
textures is evident throughout, as he transforms
everyday staples into works of art. A cropped gray
T-shirt becomes a canvas for crunched-up fabric,
paired effortlessly with low-slung layered jeans,
while a white collared shirt morphs into a swirling
mass of chaos beneath a loose denim bomber and
matching pants.
But it’s not just about the individual pieces—it’s
about the narrative they weave together. Two models
stride side by side in hooded dresses washed
in burgundy and blue-yellow dyes, their fabrics
wrinkled and creased as if clenched in a defiant
fist. Meanwhile, a supersized rendition of a classic
everyday outfit emerges, with a striped button-down
spiraling in on itself, accompanied by a giant black
skirt boasting tiers of crumpled fabric.
In this collection, Martens invites us to reconsider
our relationship with clothing. It’s a celebration of imperfection,
a tribute to the beauty found in the wrinkles,
tears, and uneven pulls that accompany our
daily lives. By embracing the reality of living in and
caring for our clothes, Y/Project transcends fashion
to become a statement of unorthodox elegance—a
testament to the artistry that lies in the imperfect.
innovation and community-centric design. Originally built in 1971 and reimagined by
LGA Architectural Partners in 2022, this library demonstrates how thoughtful redesign
can breathe new life into a historic structure. Here are four standout features that
make the Albert Campbell Branch a beacon of modern architecture:
Ground-Level Transformation:
The main entrance was relocated from the second to the first floor, enhancing
accessibility and connection to the natural topography. This redesign allows the
first floor to be flooded with natural light and provides an inviting entrance that
seamlessly integrates with the front landscape.
Indigenous-Inspired Landscaping:
The entry landscape, designed with consultation from Miinikaan Innovation and
Design, features a medicine wheel garden, native plantings, and a mural wall by
the Red Urban Nation Artist Collective. This inclusion ensures the space is culturally
relevant and welcoming for Toronto’s Indigenous communities.
Sustainable Repurposing:
Instead of expanding or replacing the building, 25% of the back-of-house space
was repurposed for public use. This sustainable approach aligns with broader environmental
objectives and makes efficient use of the existing structure while enhancing
its functionality.
Dynamic Interior Design:
The interior boasts large east and west-facing windows that draw in daylight and
offer verdant views. The ceilings were reimagined with wooden slats to improve
acoustics and aesthetics, while unique millwork service points provide intuitive navigation
and multifunctional service hubs for visitors.
