One of the most inspiring
things you can do as an
adult is to see the world
from a kid’s perspective.
So, when talented young Jordy reached
out to Smorgasboarder a bit ago, eager
to share his art, we were more than
happy to listen and learn. Actually, he left
us feeling pretty uplifted, with the unusual
need to pick up a box of markers and
rediscover the unbridled joy of creating
just for the sake of it.
In addition to exploring the coast with
his family in Gippsland, Victoria, Jordy
has spent the last six years doodling fun
cartoons and sharing them with the world
through his YouTube channel, Doggo Art.
When asked what drives his extraordinary
commitment to art at such a young age,
Jordy said that he loves how peaceful
being creative is, as he can just sit there
for hours thinking about what he’ll draw
next or what colour he’ll use.
“I love how there are no limits as to what
I can draw. I like seeing how creative I am
and how much better I get at drawing day
by day. It’s so relaxing. I can just be in my
own world and draw whatever I want.
“I would describe my style as cartoony.
I really like bold, vibrant colours instead
of grey and white because they stand
out more. Sometimes I will draw different
things, like singular characters or word
art. I am still developing skills at drawing
realism, so I mainly stick to cartoons.”
Jordy’s charming signature style is
inspired by a world-renowned Belgian
artist, Vexx, who just so happened to
build an online empire in his teens after
he started posting his vivid, psychedelic
drawings on social media.
If the many collaborations we are
seeing between big brands and abstract
doodlers are anything to go by, these
unique art niches are certainly thriving,
especially within the skate and surf
communities.
Admirably, Jordy said the strangeness of
his art and how it is perceived by others
doesn’t matter to him, because he enjoys
creating it, and that’s what really matters.
“I remember clicking on Vexx’s channel
one day and being amazed by all of the
characters and colours. After watching a
few more videos, I decided I would give
it a go. I grabbed a sheet of paper and a
pencil and just started drawing a bunch
of things like flowers, sports, and food.
“Now I realise that it was not the best
drawing, but at the time I thought it
was amazing. I used to sit there every
day and draw until I had to have dinner
or go somewhere. Over time, with lots
of practice and hours of doodling, I
eventually developed my style and have
stuck with it ever since.
