Speaking of Mark Riley, he’s taking a crew of
surfers keen to carve across to Roti to learn the
ways of Peruvian legend Felipe Pomar.
To those unaware, Felipe Pomar is an 80-yearold
surfer from Peru who still charges. Pomar
was crowned the first officially
recognised World Surfing
Champion in 1965. Now
living in Kauai, Hawaii, he
has inspired the likes of legends such as Duke
Kahanamoku, the father of modern-day surfing,
and Laird Hamilton.
Always eager to spread the word about his
latest venture, Mark sent us an email giving us
the rundown.
“I have met an amazing man called
Felipe Pomar. He has developed a
program to help anyone surf until they
are 100 years of age. He wants to share
his secrets to longevity and has
invited me and a small
group to hear about
his journeys and
participate in his
remarkable program to
keep all of us in the water for longer. At this stage,
we have earmarked the dates for 31 August
to 12 September this year, with the cost being
approximately $5,500.
“The cost will depend on numbers and sleeping
arrangements, but the planned inclusions are
three meals a day, airfares and ferry rides,
accommodation on Rote Island in Indonesia, surf
spot transfers, many different types of waves
to choose from, and two nights in Kupang. The
locals in Roti are nice and generally do not surf.
There’s good fishing and very few mosquitoes,
with uncrowded world-class waves.”
