THE SKY
DOSWELL SCHOOL OF
AERONAUTICAL SCIENCES
IS NOT
THE LIMIT
The Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences
at Texas Woman’s University
The aviation industry is facing a long-term demand for commercial pilots. According to the US
Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for airline and commercial pilots is growing about 4%
per year with an estimated 17,000 needed to meet this demand, annually. Additionally, historical
barriers often prevent many from pursuing a career in aviation.
Texas Woman’s Bachelor of Science in Aviation Science is one of only a few public university
programs in Texas and one of the most affordable programs of its kind in the region and
the nation.
With several major and regional airlines based in the DFW metroplex, Texas Woman’s University
is uniquely positioned to positively impact the industry’s workforce development and help solve
the pilot shortage.
Made possible by the generosity of the Houston J. and Florence A. Doswell Foundation, the
Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences welcomes its first cohort of students in Fall 2024.
Led by aviation education experts, James Clinton Grant and Brittany Dinsmore,
the degree path is designed to complete the flight hour requirement leading
to a commercial pilot’s license. Students have the option to include business
management classes to enhance their academic resume.
Cultivating Engaged Leaders and Global Citizens
Established in 1901, Texas Woman’s University cultivates engaged leaders
and global citizens by leveraging its historical strengths in education,
health and liberal arts.
TWU is committed to transformational learning, discovery and service. In
2021, Texas Woman’s became the newest university system in the state of
Texas and the only university system in the nation with a woman-focused
mission.
With more than 16,000 students across the university system’s three
campuses – Denton, Dallas and Houston – TWU is educating the next
generation of innovators and leaders and inspiring excellence and a
pioneering spirit.
Well known for its long history in pre-health programs and scientific
research, TWU is adding aviation to its science, technology, engineering
and math (STEM) offerings, as part of an ambitious goal to double STEM
opportunities by 2028.
Propelling into the Future
Philanthropic support will provide critical funding for students, faculty and
programs as we chart a bold new flight plan.
Because required flight training adds an estimated $100,000 to the cost of
earning a bachelor’s degree in aviation science, scholarship support is essential.
Financial support also opens wide the doors of opportunity for all students who
aspire to become college graduates and trained pilots.
As program enrollment grows, additional faculty are needed to train this next
generation of aviation scientists. The recruitment of expert faculty is vital to the
growth and success of the program and its future expansion.
Phase 1: Student Success and Faculty Recruitment
A scholarship investment is transformative and provides opportunity for our
leaders of tomorrow. Faculty endowments attract and retain experts and support
innovative teaching and learning.
Phase 2: TWU Flight Center and Training Facility
A dedicated Texas Woman’s University flight facility would
be more cost effective for both the university and students,
as well as increase program visibility.
Phase 3: TWU Aircraft
In order to optimize operating costs and program efficiency,
TWU’s goal is to own 100% of the aircraft used for training.
*Endowments start at $25,000 and can be paid over a five-year period.
“At Texas Woman’s, we pioneer
opportunities for women to
achieve high-paying jobs and
leadership roles. This new
program accomplishes both.”
- Carine M. Feyten, Chancellor of Texas Woman’s University System
